Topic: Melee Combat Alien Mech
Description: In the far future, the Chinese government will overpass the space technology of all rival nations and have estblished homebases on far away planets.

An hostile and intelligent alien race was discovered on a planet in a far away system. The aliens attacked the Chinese and repealed their attempts in harvesting information of their world, aswell destroying all their research ships.

The chinese government choose to send out a squad of space marines in a newly devolped Space Mech. Space Travel does not allow the transport of nuclear or biological weaponary, so the Chinese Space team devolped mechs with strong Melee capibilities to protect future research teams.

These Mechs were known as the DarkSharks.

davi, I wanted to ask, I'm puzzled by something. Its a nit-pick, but the intrigue is genuine... so bare with me, please.

The activity is called Industrial Design, but I looked up ID on wikipedia and got this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Design).
My question is that, is there a difference between saying Industrial Design, and Vehicle or Tech or Mech Design? I don't know much about the subject, but based on the little I've read, it seems that ID is something more geared towards producing things that have a purpose, in real life application. The subject of this week is something either fictional, or asuming (asuming the Chinese government will have space stations, asuming there will be aliens, etc). It sounds like the context is something more towards a game or movie.
If there is a difference between designing products for real life use, and designing concepts for the content of entertaining products, wouldn't it be more appropiate to call the activity something like Tech or Mech Design?

davi
October 28th, 2005, 12:22 AM
well the problem is, i tried to do a practical Industrial design challenge before, about solving the issue of blindness, and there was an exterme shortage of results, the second topic was about a plantary defense against asteroids and the such, each are practical, but difficult because it's generally not what someone would want to put time into.

So im going to try to make it as interesting as possible, vechicles, futureist practicalities based on gusses of the future, but i shall be bring topics such as shoe design, modern kitchen appliances....

October 28th, 2005, 01:21 AM
Cool. Yeah I noticed not many people were participating before. Personally, the impression I had of the activity is that you had to be either an industrial designer or an industrial design student to make an entry that held a chance, and that made the activity quite intimidating for someone who is neither. But I guess there's no real reason not to join, so I'll try to jump in on this one too : )
(though I haven't finished any of the other 3 activity entries... ugh)

Allright, enough talk. Time to get started.

okaaaaay. I'm in for this. Yum yum Melee Mechs!
I take this , a typical 3/4th view woudl be sufficient?
Does it have to be digital or markers/pen/pencils acceptable?

Ni*
October 28th, 2005, 11:44 AM
ace, this is good practice, i hope i have time to take part, it'll stop me just sketching figures...

yeah, technically not industrial design since it's fictional but it's 'conceptual industrial design', and solving problems that don't exist yet it's still solving problems, and getting realistic ideas onto a medium that can explain them (pencil on paper).

i'd like to see some more basic, less far fetched suggestions (i'll try to think up a few myself) to allow entrants to work from first principles- designing a space mech is a bit much considering the amount of work that goes into designing something like a piece of furniture, let alone an electronic product- some things to let entrants really explore the problem and hopefully give some innovative solutions.

cheers

very cool guys.

This is not meant to be my final - I was testing a rendering tech and searching a design. It will count as my final though if I don't find any time to make another version.

Basicaly the chinese took over, with a new ideology being a mix of science and religion, a sort of "neo-taoism", and changed flag when the real space age came . This bot is propeled by a yin/yang engine (matter/antimatter) , and is called "dark shark" because of the shape it takes while in translation (I'll put more details on my final).

AndrewLey, If you'll permit me a quick crit....

As someone who uses textures a lot in my pieces, I immediately noticed that your brushed metal texture was basically just dropped over the top of the existing piece. The whole thing looks AWESOME, and the texture is spot on, but something you might want to consider doing to add to its realism is fit the texture according to where it is positioned on the mech. For example...since you just dropped it over the top, the brushed metal isn't curving around the bicep, or moving parrallel with the angle of the thigh. the striations of the brushed metal are just going top to bottom all the way through when in reality they would be unique depending on how they situated on the body.

Excellent design and piece....but that part definitely stands out as a little sloppy. If you just spent maybe 30 minutes masking out and rotating the parts in that overlay layer to be parrallel with whatever angle the individual body parts are moving in, you will have a MUCh stronger piece.

This thing can retract it's limps into the body for space travel...
as soon as it locks onto a target, it goes into rip-stuff-apart-mode and looks like pictured above.
Legs seem stupid for a bot in space, but this sucker has high powered electro magnets installed into his feet and can walk on the metal hulls of large battle ships, wander around on their surface and slowly tear them to pieces.
Also, he's kinda big.
Only 200 of these were built due to the high cost.. they are on duty since 278 years. Only two of them were destroyed... One got hit by a large asteroid, the other one went up in smoke, when it's pilot got high on illegal substances and maneuvered his mech into the earth's atmosphere. His last radio transmission was something about getting beer at the 7-11.
None of them was ever lost in one of the countless battles against the alien enemy.

Zeitwolf
November 2nd, 2005, 06:05 AM
Question:
is 2 legs a must for mecha?

I ask because this is industrial design and the designs should be broadly-said reproducable. so more than two legs would hold balance and walk through difficult landscape with more ease...

xgabo
November 2nd, 2005, 11:36 AM
I would say a mecha could have any number of legs, and of course more legs equals more stability, but in a future setting, with higher technology, anything is possible, especially in a lower gravity environment :)

there has only been produced 2 darkshark mecha due to its massive size and cost, the cockpit is at our left side of the front. they use the light producing thing art the front to lure the enemy close and then they obliterate it with the 4 claws.

The Chinese Darksharks having been produced in a limited series of 10 are known for their sheer berserk rage when it comes to melee combat. Equipped with a twin-blade sword and a "Xenotonium" alloy shield it is a hard rival on every battlefield.

Thanks for the crits guys - I spent a little more time on it.

In addition to the main propultion engine on the back, the Darkshark mobile armour has a series of small thrusters which give it agile flight performance in zero gravity. Its powerful fists are perfect for tearing apart armour and the primary systems of enemy ships. Once the unit has penetrated the enemy ship it is able to perform a combat role in a gravity environment.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v243/johnayala/darksharkforweb.jpgThe central arm acts similarly as our "jaws of life is used"to rip through heavy armor. The arm is equipped with a high density lazer which helps it tear through alien armor. When not in use,the arm collapses under, and behind the mech. The cockpit is located just above the central arm, when in its non-combative state.

Darkshark
Known as "darkshark" armor because of it's resemblance to the battle armor of the chinese general Sun "Darkshark" Tsang, this mobile suit towers at an easy eighty feet tall. In the war against the enemy, the mobility of this armor proved invaluable in providing flexible and powerful battle formations, hitting as hard as a hammer and effectively as a scalpel.
