Yo!
Prague being over, I also want to share my works from that time. Was fun, will keep going.
First off with the first page of my sketchbook. It is Carl Dobsky. Inspirational fella in more than one way. :D Bought myself guasses from Prague and here I am trying them off for the first time.
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/5314/dobsky2nb.jpg
And inspired by Coro (who ROCKS!!!! DAAAAMN!!!!) and his techniques, tried this. And it sucks.
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/8890/duude2rd.jpg
Here´s the winner piece of the portrait assignment - had to go and find a stranger to model - found her in a bar. And she just kept on moving... Crap. Can´t really concider myself a winner - there was only two other contestants.
http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/8642/portrait2hw.jpg
This is the winner piece of assignment where we had to follow the techniques of Andrew and Marko. I am happy with this, and happy I won! :D Got meself Degenesis -appendix!!! With a Signature and all!!!
http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/7122/thmb4zj.jpg
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/afro_small.jpg
On the way home I tried my Copics again and this time it doesn´t suck. But it ain´t too good either. I should get a bit more colors, I stole these from my school and they are like the crappiest pack of colors in the western part of the world! Bright yellows, oranges, greens and blues! You could compare this set to the first set of crayons you ever had... Not that there´s something wrong with basic colors but here the brightness differences really bother working.

Aight!!! More to come soon!

Thanks you guys! Was GREAT meeting you all!
I thought I would hold a little introduction too, stuff that I have done. Not so much but a little at least... Since I have been doing newspaper illustrations, there´s a bit mysterious themes in my pics. But you´ll see... Hope you don´t mind. And after this I will start filling my sketchbook!!
First off with a Hitler.

And a joke illustrated...

http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/punk.jpg
He he he... Reminds me of my self-portrait. :D And since I guess no-one can connect these two threads together, I will post it here too. I was planning on starting another portrait soon, will keep you posted about it. This is all oil. First ever oil-piece I have finished. Haven´t un-finished but few before this... And I think I am not even finished with this one. Oh man I want to learn to paint!!!

Anyhoo, Love the self portrait - its definately YOU, and the book covers. The Carl Dobsky portrait is cool man, and I love the hitler pic and the last head sketch there. Gonna keep an eye on this thread dude, you best be drawing lots ok?:)

Well here we go. Filling my books - the manual AND the virtual.
dorian - Thanks maaan! Just received an e-mail asking for another book cover today! :D I am happy! And well... The trick is to get the word out there that you are willing and able to do stuff like that! I first started to do newspaper illu´s and not long after that, gathered a small portfolio online and just found out all the publishers in Finland and SPAMMED!!! There it came. That was and has been the only self promotion I have ever done - the word gets out on it´s own after a while. Good luck man, just be f*cking obnoxious and rude and MAIL THEM ALL! Or even visit!!!
jtheanswer - Thanks maan! I dunno why but everyone seems to like the storyboard... Maybe it has a good mood into it. It was quite a quickie actually. But thanks!!! Cheerios!
Jtoons, van, BAKI - Well well, you should´ve been to Praha since the composition and the "fluidity" of the :afroboy: is TOTALLY in debt to Marko and Andrew! Their composition theory ripped my damn eyes open!!!
johnny78 - Damn thanks! I sure hope we will make it too! I have already plans that at least I will be working on it a lot but we´ll see how it goes. Being independent isn´t a good guarantee that something as big scale as this will get done. But I´ll keep me thumbsies uppp!
Cyanid - Ha haa!!! Yes baby!!! I don´t mind stars, keep ´em coming and rest assured, you will be served from this side. Well I guess I will feed you anyways... :cheerleader:
Placeboast - Thanks for the kind words but I believe there sure is something to crit. So fire away, Captain! I like crits. Constructive ones, not on the line of "The gap between your nose and upper lip is HUGE!" :D
Inkfish - Tack ska du ha Inkfish! Gubbe är en maskin. Jag ska fortsätta min maskinsam seder och bruk! (sorry all, a little scandinavian connection here)
Molly!!! - Giiiiirl!!! You are a like a good glass of joy the whole girl, that´s what you are!!! Was cool to meet, let´s stay in touch over ´ere. And thanks for the comments, I believe you didn´t see my stuff over there. I was a bit shy to show my shit around... Don´t know why, maybe because it is not really Concept-artish stuff, more like illustrations and such. But if I learned something, I learned that whatever style or way is good. So now I am re-assured that I have to get my works up to be viewed.
And hmm, not so sure about the Gamma-rayed Mr. Dobsky but I am fond of myself yes. :D Soon starts another commission, my girlie. She wants me to paint her portrait (and I want to also) but she isn´t too excited about the way I want to do it... I want it silly, nothing normal but silly as hell! :D We´ll see.
That fat kid - Yo thanks!! I sure will! I dunno, maybe I can not draw ppl normally and that is why I tend to mess up their faces like this. Hih. Welllllll, practise makes perfect. If I first nail the ugly faces, maybe I will start prettying them up after that. :D
But here´s another, just something wicked... I think I just don´t dare to touch this one anymore on the manual sketchbook, maybe virtually I will touch it up a bit. I have NO idea what it is... Some kinda medically-wired-pilotish-futuregirl... Handing out a wire. (?????)
Hah... Don´t ask.

You have a real variety of stuff in here. It's all good too. I can't offer any painting advice on the latest update but I'll make a drawing comment. Her upper arm goes straight as a rod down and her lower arm goes straight as a rod up. I don't think this could happen in reality. Also cropping it right at the elbow makes the arm look even more bizarre.

Aight! Back again, work has kept me busy enogh not to do anything worth posting (except for these ones) but I will try to do something about that. Get fired or something... :winkywink:
tensai - Thanks! Actually I made another storyboard for that road safety campaign and they just filmed it in and is in edit at the moment. Color correction and whatnot. I will try to find that one too. It was nice to see my visions filmed! :D It looks a bit different still but we´ll see after the colors are in place.
schowalye - Yes man!!! It is Kalevala! How´d you know about that? We will see how it goes, it´s been busy at work and I hope I (and everyone else there) get the chance to work on that full-time starting from January.
Jokisalo, chenga and jtheanswer - thanks boy-os! I am not sure I will keep this thing up, I want to evolve!!! 2 git better dammid!
And Joeslucher - I fixed that part but then got fed up with the whole pic. It is now in my archive of "Good effort but try again´s".
These pretty boys (and girls) are commissioned illus. I hope it is this monitor I am at the moment but these look REALLY dark! Wasn´t meant to, hopefully they are okay on your monitors...

This kinda things I´ve been up to at work, a REALLY quick one though. Done all in Photoshop and Imageready. The real background of it is lost somewhere so I just dropped this in now... :bashful: ....go figure.
There´s a game online also which just got released, it is not even half finished yet but something had to be published. We will tweak on it and release the ready one later. Don´t know when. I will consult my boss on the details and post you the link a tad later.

Why thank you kompis. Twice!
And yes it is oil, I think I will get back to her now when I leave work, not really happy about some parts there. And I believe the skintones are a bit dark on the pic, in Real-Life® they are a bit lighter.
And this reminds me... If anyone has good pointers how to digitize oilpaintings, please DO tell!!! Always they look crappier from compi. Well I know so much that you can´t really bring the vibrant colors to compiscreen but I geuss you can somehow kill the refractions and so... I guess I should ask somewhere else to get more audience though... :D
And I am happy that I was one of the lucky bastards to get a shirt, it looks GREAT on her!
Edit:
Shouldn´t blabber without a pic...

The one with from yesterday, one with your girl is brilliant, though I think that the gap between the nose and upper lip is HUGE! The tonality is great and highlights and shadows also. I'd put your girl on my wall anyday. Sorry for the lack of intelligence on my replies but I know nothing of painting so I really can't say anything constructive. Just keep posting.

Thank you Placeboast!!!
Now that I look back at it, I noticed some major anatomical issues which make her not look like herself. Like the upper lip. Ha ha, actually I have that - the huge gap... Maybe I see something of me in her or something. But then again it is not supposed to be a perfect piece, just a try-out with oils since I am such a rookie when it comes to that. Now it looks a bit better colorwise, I retouched it a bit.
Here´s an update on that painting and a new doodle of Zappa which I made during a class.

G´day again.
The other day I had a big dilemma, I had a painting class, a big party and an illustration to do at the same time. I had to solve this somehow so I decided to PAINT the illustration. First time for me. :D I touched it up a bit in PS, mainly cleaning the colors so there´s no texture of the canvas and no glares.
There´s also a link to a 2,8 Mb GIF-animation which I made, had the camera shooting the whole process... It´s a bit big but quite funny in my opinion. :D

Hello there. Thanks for visiting my sketchbook. It's great to get some pointers from someone who really knows what he's (she's) talking 'bout. The only thing that I really don't like about your sketchbook is that you don't update it as frequently as I would like you to. That hiiri painting is great. And it only took you like just over a minute to paint that. Would you believe it?
See you.

Hint taken... Thanks for all the comments! I will try to keep this thing rolling. I actually finished a project just a week ago, painted four BIG oil paintings (150x90 cm) and sold them to my cousin and bought a new BASS!!! Fender Jazz Bass ohhhh mama! I am SO happy about that!
Haven´t been up to much drawing lately but next January everything will get better. I took a course at school, painting four days a week, eight hours a day! SOOOO marvellous. I will learn a lot (I hope).
These are from our model drawing class which I have attended every now and then. Poor pictures, I tend to draw quite low contrast - hard to take a pic so that everything would show good.... And I see some lens distortion there also, I will try to picture these better and re-post them.
Tomorrow (I hope) I have a book cover to show you. Do keep coming back and critique and I don´t mind if you drop a vote too!

Alright. I will be coming back to my compi tomorrow morning and I would like if you´d help me with this a bit... I have to return this tomorrow (thursday) and there´s still something wrong. Tell me your opinions about the typography (which was just laid in there) and about everything else. I haven´t finished coloring her at all yet, these are just kinda placeholder colors. But that shouldn´t be too big of a deal to do tomorrow. I more concerned of the overall mood and look.
The name of the book means a piece of glass. That´s all I will tell, you may insert your thoughts here and then I will see if I made the right impression on you. For example, I would like you to tell what the girl might be thinking / in what mood is she in etc... ;-)
To clarify, I took a pic of my cousins daughter and then traced her outlines, colored it with the original pic next to me (not the same colors but REALLY close) and so on. Can´t take the credit much but from the overall look and so on... This is how it is. :D
Posted two versions, one with the snow also so you can tell if it is good or not.

Mostly un-interesting stuff but at least something - to show y´all that I HAVE been up to something else than loitering around for the past half a month.
First of all, here´s the most recent Vili Voipio -book (the third of its kind) which I made. Not completely happy about it but then again it was made totally to the target audience. And the style is chosen to be like that... The earlier book illus can be found from my webpage, I don´t want to bother you by posting them here... First pic is the cover and the rest are illus for the inner pages.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/Vilit1.jpg
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/Vilit2.jpg
And these buggers are the family of my girlfriend... They (my GF and her brother) had this idea of printing playingcards for Xmas present for the mom so I ended up doing the illus. :D
There is the three syblings as JACKS, mom of my gf and the mom of her brothers gf as QUEENS, My gf´s stepdad and my gf´s bros gf´s dad as KINGS, the gf´s of the two bros as ACES (HA HA HA, complicated, eh?!?)
and...
...ME as a JOKER!!! :D
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/cards.jpg
...they never got printed. Some problems on that end (in Germany, me being in Finland). Fuck.

Hiya all!
Maybe I will throw this also in the finished section, to get maybe a bit more feedback when it is not yet too late. But here´s todays effort, a theatre poster. It is a tale about a girl who gets lost from a ship and so on...
Enjoy and so.
First one with only the pic, second with all the text I HAD to put in. Damn I hate it that ppl don´t get that too much info is NOT good! But no can do.

ya know what? i really like this recent theatre poster! good flow and rhythm. type treatment is lovely too (perhaps some kerning on the 'n' and 'g' in the title's first word...a little too distant there, but that's a minor nitpick). :)

Hey I will throw this one here too. A marker version of the theatre poster piece, tried to go for an old kinda style. The way they made the ships and all, when the men were made of steel and the ships were made of wood!

That poster is really sweet, i'm really digging the composition and the flow of lines. If you want crits i got only one this time: the life drawing seems tp have a minor anatomical flaw in its face; the ears seem too far a way, otherwise killer stuff and grats on the five stars man ;)

And Thanksies:
MITCH - I sure will keep up the work, might even do more!!! :D Thx.
VIGOSTAR - Thank you too. I have a new vision on life drawing, I used to draw so that I get the figure and then shade it part by part. Without thinking about the overall values. One day I had a light bulb lighting on top of me messy head and I kinda started to think things differently. This last one is the first try on that - you can see it so that the whole head is darker than the chest etc etc... I dunno, hard to explain but I GOT IT NOW! Now I only need to do LOADS of it.
ERILAZ - Thank you thank you thank you! It is nice to have regulars. One day I will not have a hurry and I will scout everyone who has visited here and I will start from YOU!!! :D
PENICLATOR - (mis-spelled but decided to leave it :D ) Ahem I think it was pretty long, like four hours altogheter. Or even more. It was done on two different days a week apart and the model had a different book, pose and hairdo. But it mattered not.
FOOXOO - Thank you too. The tones are the thing I am most happy about that I think, good thing you like too. Cheers!
INKFISH - More Finnnnns!!! Yay! I like finnish ppl. ;-) I did notice the flaw in the model but then I decided that what the hell, it is only a practise thing so I was too lazy to start correcting it. Darn lazy I am that is true. :D
I study in Tampereen Taiteen ja Viestinnän oppilaitos (or something like that) Visual design. And still do.
AND THANK YOU ALL FOR THE STARS I AM A HAPPY MAN!!!! :DDDDDDD

Sorry to bump again, just scanned this one so I thought I would post it also. Fun to see what will come out of it (if anything). I was in Art History class and we were talking about perspective and how it has been different over the history. Soooo I decided to try something with a wonky perspective. Will see if I have the strength to continue...

Hey, Hiipi :). I'm very glad you restored all the images. I enjoyed looking at your art and variety of styles and techniques you use.
My favorite things in your book:
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/5314/dobsky2nb.jpg (I found the guy photo in this forum, from the workshop photos) in the same cap, and his mouth was slightly open just like in the portrait :). Very good similarity and a good feeling of a current moment, a regular busy day in the life of the person. Well, because you caught him in the moment when he is involved in something, that's why :).
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/8890/duude2rd.jpg I like the colors, the pose, the gesture of his hand, the composition and the sweet ironic hint above his head. I love things like this ;). The guy looks very busy and consumed with something too, good catch of the emotion, dear Hiipi. And it's already second one, so you are probably good in this.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/afro_small.jpg Is it you? very cool. Movement is great and I love unusual poses. Stretched hand looks a bit out of style, in my opinion.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/a30.jpg OMG, what are disgusting looking life. But he is passive one, it didn't go farther than his idol's hairdo, mustache and T-shirts with symbolics in his case, And he is too lazy already to scream on the top of his lungs on the meetings and parades. From the photo on the wall I see he was always like this, hmmm, interesting. People are interested in politics when their own life is falling apart, I think. The guy doesn't have any, probably.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/a22.jpg I had a friend who love women like this, they are like over ripen fruit, sweeter than regular, for those who understands and appreciates this :).
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/a21.jpg The guy is gorgeous, not many things can make him lose his cool. It's so easy to make him feel happy, beer will do. His job is outside :), on the sun.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/a11.jpg Very nicely painted, I love this crumpled paper effect. I looked for very long time at this image. The needle was confusing for me though, I saw something aggressive in it at first sight. Still didn't get how these little people use it. The map is awesome.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/b04.jpg I love this comics. It stirs my imagination, and it's sweet. I like the moment when tattoo becomes alive. I like very truthful, but subtle expression of faces and body language you used. You tells a lot with just one eye of this girl in the darkness, how she can not feel asleep and lays down thinking persistently.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/b15.jpg I kind of glad that it's not the colored version, very graphic, my heart dropped to my heels in the last scene. I feel for this tomato. Oh please do something, give it a second chance, :S
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/b23.jpg Body language and expressions of their faces are great. What happened? Is it a kidnapping or a traffic accident? I feel terrified, double, actually, after tomato fameless death.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/b22.jpg very touching. I like this grey light color.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/d21.jpg I like it, it's funny and sweet :)
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/you.jpg That's great illustration, I like very many things in it, the bright colors, the pose, body language, outfit and his tight jeans :). looks like very young person , who thinks a lot about his appearance and opinion of other people about him :). I saved this picture, hope you are OK with it.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/punk.jpg Execution is great. I always thought being a punk requires some devotion, money and a lot of time.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/crash.jpg Very strange direction of the thought, but i guess, it's possible.
http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/7008/tyti8yt.jpg that's a very beautiful drawing and it has a very nice mood about it. A bit sad, a bit daydreaming, or maybe crystal clean feeling of the beautiful morning because of this light gray color. Well, that's how I see it. :)
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/kansi2.jpg She looks as a typical teenager, with a pissed off attitude, just wanting to be alone with her thoughts and friends, too touchy, not at peace with herself.
All the playing cards are great, I love the idea and performance a lot. It's a shame it didn't get printed. I think you need to do this again though. Wonderful images.
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/reader.jpg Beautiful image, Rendering is so soft and gentle. if you hide the ear under her hair, it will be better, I think.
All version of the Theater posters are great in their own way. In the last one I like that the lighthouse plays a bigger role in composition. And it has more contrast, I like it too. The reflections are better too, brighter. Sail looks better in the colored version, in my opinion. I like very much, that you use very different ways to render and different lines in the last version, it adds a lot to interest for viewers.
In the last drawing, the rider is passing us by. It makes the events less involving, at least for me. I look at it calmly, from the distance, like at the past events.
So thank you very much. It was great

I am glad you liked my art. I ALWAYS try to do things differently than before and I am glad you found that impressive. That is in my opinion one thing that keeps individual artists interesting - variety of styles. And I mean not only the media you use but also the approach and the ideas behind the pictures! There are truly wonderful artists around who do their thing REALLY well and they are wonderful to look at. Then one day you see something different from this artist and it blows you away! Just the fact that he/she has looked outside the box and experienced! That is the core. I am really not that far in my path yet, a long way to go where I want to go, but I have chosen not to take the straight road. I am (at least) trying to evolve in all different areas, not to get stuck in the box. Thanks for the encouragment!!!
Secondly, I am even more glad about your view of me. I enjoyed tremendously reading the analysis of Hiipi! :D It is quite a curious thing how you are able to form an image of me by reading what I post here on this forum. After all it is not the REAL me who is visiting here I think, more like a lonesome artist somewhere in Finland who has another life on this forum, to be among my kind. But obviously I let my true self affect my writings since you got me figured out pretty well. :D I´m not saying that I try to be someone else whenever I write here but I do tend to focus on things that I wouldn´t normally. And maybe try to present myself as if I would know exactly what I´m talking about. Ha ha. I am really not this wise, y´know... :}
I don´t know if I want to comment your sayings much more, you got me figured out pretty well and I am glad you did. And I appreciate your vision highly. The thing is that I don´t want to talk about myself too much, it is nicer like this that my character forms by the things I say and by the art I present. That is anyway what we all are here, isn´t it - artists. And we communicate by our art and what we think of art altogether. So I will let that part of me do the talking from now on, the un-true part... :P (juuuust kidding!!!)
Others... I am NOT dissing you but Sve stole my attention this time. :D Thank you too!!!!
Fellah - Nice of you to drop by. You are one of them masters around here and you just will never know how often I come see what you are up to. Let´s be pals then!!! :D Come again sir!

hey hiipi!
i dig the bike image - forced perspective is really fun (although there are some wonky spots where a second vp would be beneficial)
problem - i can't imagine being able to hop up with legs in the air whilst on that bike going uphill - that forced perspective (unless it was a motorbike) would make this impossible = less than believable. however, if this were a magic bike(!) anything is possible and i should probably shut up now. :)
thanks for the posts with the mosts!

Hey you all!
Gee Thanks for the feedback! Goog to have you dropping in! I tried a bit with the bike picture and got totally bored with it after like ten minutes, gave up and abandoned. Hah! It was fun to draw but this time not to color. Maybe later, maybe not. :D
Redehlert - Yaaa, I know it looks a bit funny but way I imagined it was that it is not necessarily an uphill, just a wonky picture. And he is going sooooo fast that when he crosses the little hill there, his bike just flys through the air. Hah, I dunno. A brainbug hit me whilst I was doing it, I am not responsible!!! Maybe it is a magic bike since in a world where the perspective goes like that, anything is possible. Should add a cow flying by also. ;-)
LoveHateWar - Thanks thanks, I hear you but I don´t understand you. Something is good, dunno what. But matters not :D CoMe AgAiN!
ZebzFree - We will see will I finish the bike one... Too damn much to color. :D But let´s not lose hope just yet. I think you are spot on with your critique on the inked poster, I also think it got a bit too messy. And I wish I would´ve had a better pen when I was inking it, it was just a 0.35 Copic MULTILINER (what a techno-name ha ha) and was running dry. Didn´t do much varying for me even if I had tried. Next time I am again that much wiser.
Yoonjin - Tjä! (a new scandinavian salute I just came up with) I am thinking about the roundup in Sweden in June... Maybe we will meet there. Meanwhile I will rock. :D Thanks for dropping by!!!
Fellah. - Pal!!! :D Good comment on the light and the fingers. I will do that if I get back to that. AND I did another speedy! Except this time with guass and a bit PS in the end to make it look decent.
Look, it is down there!!!
Guass... Damn I can´t handle this media. I dunno what I am doing wrong but something is not in order. THey say paint small and paint fast. Well I tried and didn´t work out... Touched it up a bit in PS, put a grey layer on multiply and then masked "artistically" the head so that the grey on multiply created some additional shadows and so. Also cleaned the surroundings of pencil leftovers.
That´s all, folk!

Hey! your life drawing is your strongest attribute in my opinion, you really have an affinity for using tonal values and halftones etc to describe form while keeping an overal coherent value scheme. I would like to see some work in other realms of art, some landscapes and some perspective perhaps, to balance out your artistic knowledge and skill base. You'd be surprised how much it ends up helping your figures too! Keep on truckin'

Hey Hiipi!
Life studies are looking good, only crit i can give you is that you should measure the proportions a bit more carefully. The faces occupy far too large area in most of your studies.

Beautiful update, Hiipi, real joy to look. I don't even know where to start, everything seems so interesting. Well, I'm very fond of this nude female figure on the red background. And this is life drawing, so I'm just admire it, such a great control of proportions, pencils, volume, and nice feeling of real breathing body. If it's not too much problem for you show more, show the rest figures. I never saw anyone doing this exercise. Is it hard to control, ink, I mean? Does it stay where you put it to stay?
Looked again. Wonderful. Illusion of the warm body, real person is complete, really love to see more work like this. I saved her, thanks.
SP, hehehe, OK, I believe you, could be your roommate though ;). I see you have a lot of space where you live. And ice is old.
I like this funny cartoon like portrait very much, especially his crazy smile, how you did eyes and this mix of the ink pen and digital coloring. Looks rough and exciting. This guy is so extreme, everything is out of normal with him. I like the blue shadows and outlined highlight on his chin, very cool, and it really creates very nice volume. Love him very much and saved. Thank you.
The PS panting looks very expressive, And I love those modest colors, got kind of tired from bright crazy color combination, back to old masters palette would be nice for a change :). Temporary.
And drowning girl looks very strange. I wonder what the hell she is thinking about. She looks so deep in thoughts, like all her sensors on her skin don't feel cool water, like she doesn't realise where she is.
Very strange.
I'm not sure if you would see her mouth through the water like this, though.
It would swim away probably. The face from nose down in water would be slightly distorted, I think. ( An besides the water is moving, not stable, so I could be right.). Like the picture though anyway for this strange creepy sensation.
So thank you very much. It was a pleasure to see all this lovely art,

Dcept, sve - Thanks for the words! Sveta, I only finished this red one. Others I left as they are shown above. I haven´t done too much ink works but I think it is not too hard to handle, it stays pretty much where you put it. I just have to do it a lot more to learn WHERE to put it. :D And Sorry, you got it wrong there... The silly guy with the grin is all brushpens, no digital on top. I have these warm and cool greys which work well together. This is not a good example of it though, too messy.
Three self-portraits... Two made with oil, trying to learn a bit since I haven´t done it too much. And I wants to do it a lot.
First one I made yesterday in like 50 mins or something, really quickly without sketching at all. And there´s issues. But I care not at this point, just trying out. About 50x30 cm big.
The second one made today, took like four hours or so. It has issues also since this one went with a one minute sketch which I had to correct as I went along. This one is about 20 cm tall...

Hiipi, you are offering your SP for observing and I have a taboo to talk about you, I'm kind of in the hard place here. Need extra efforts not analyse you to death. OK, let's compromise, little bit of comments.
You look like in the middle of conversation or some happening in the first one. I love those streaming colors leaks, imitation of the hair, very cool. I like this exciting effect to go from flat to volume. And colors are great. Rich and not loud in the same time. [........] Here couldve been my interpretation of your personality ;).
In the second portrait you look a bit sad in upper part of your face and very persistent, bold in the lower one (especially the nose and very tense lips). Great portrait too. very much alive and I appreciate it enormously.

Hey, nice updates.
Dig this one a lot Pic (http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/omakuva2_small.jpg)
especialy how paint runs down.
What bothers me though, is that eyes are different and that realy dark spot above left temple.
Second's realy great too. Like how you came up with quite realistic colours.

Fantastic sketchbook. Every new update is in different style and technique. I'm doing lots of perspectives recently and after while this one caught my attention - http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/bike_small.jpg It looks like roofs are falling into vanishing point :). Really strange but funny at the same time.
I also like your pencil drawing with girl in the water.
As for some critique :). I think on some of your 20min portraits the eye placement is strange. Especially on the second one in the first row.

Heya all again!
I have been keeping this sketchbook kinda clean from my illustrations because I think they are not worth showing. They are REALLY wuick ones and often pretty much crap. But the truth is that I do newspaper illustrations quite a lot and today after finishing one I thought that maybe I will start dropping them in here. This is a series I have been doing for a looooooooooooooong time, one every two weeks. (hmmm if I count correctly, it is soon two years of those (which means around 50 of them)) It is a column about love and whatever... The clue there is to present kinda a flow of happenings in one picture, sometimes works better than other times. But here you go, I jsut don´t want to start explaining too much what these are about. :D

Very cool biweekly thing you've got going, sounds really cool. This one here is really well done, I like the style you've used. The flow of his emotions and such in this are wonderful as well, the expressions really do a great job of showing a different emotion. Nice man, would love to see more in taht series you've got
hp
February 22nd, 2006, 01:06 AM
i agree, the emotions are well carried out in your illustrations. personally i liked the first draft of the girl with the buzzer but it's still good. btw the poster you made looks pretty cool, i wish i knew how to do all those "distress" stuff on the photos. :teeth:

February 22nd, 2006, 07:02 AM
That's a great, clean little illustration!! Awesome job with emotion and getting the eye to flow across the time-lapse... My only question is, is that a cup of espresso or sake'? :P
I mentioned in another thread that I really want to work on design, too... I try to distress and otherwise alter photos and they always seem forced to me. Are you always considering the composition when you do it, is that it?

ANSWERS:
ONIR - Oh yep... This whole series has been a bit of a pain in the ass. I first got the job with the idea that there is this whole flow or time-lapse and then later on it has sometimes proven to be really difficult to accomplish. The process has really taught me a lot of things, mainly how to show emotion and how to build little stories - something that I am happy to have learned a bit since nowadays thinking illustrations is much easier. Sometimes I have REALLY struggled with these and some have come really easy, but that´s how it is. Something needs to be done by the deadline and I just have to spit out something. But I will post few of them. I have around fifty but maybe I won´t post all... :D
hpslashluvr - TY, your wish is granded. I will post more. :D And I agree with you 100 %... I liked the first version of the book cover a whole lot better but what can I do, they get what they want and now they wanted this. And were quite content with it eventually. And about the distress in photos... One good thing is to use old photos, that´s a good start. :D This photo in the poster I got from Beinecke which is a great place to search for building blocks. http://beinecke.library.yale.edu/dl_crosscollex/
Another good aid in that is custom brushes. Use textures and scattering and you are able to FUBAR your pics real easy.
Glikster - Thank you too. I believe in this kinda illustrations showing the emotion is vital. Even so that I don´t care too much about the rendering if the characters are lively. That is my goal so I am happy to hear I managed. :D Annnnddd... I am not sure what you meant with your question about compostion but of course that is one of the key things in design, rest is eye-candy. In this case it was really easy to do since the photo itself was good and interesting - and unconventional since the face is cropped out. But anyways, I do think composition in an early stage. Can´t say that about the childrens book covers though, they are a whole different process. I think (might be wrong in this though) that you have to address your audiences differently - kids´ stuff for kids and something else for the rest. Grown-ups demand some other aspects in their advertising than children.
But yes - composition is important. And of COZ it is SAMBUCA! :D I dunno... Some alcohol, strong enough to vaporize. Maybe a bit of a failure there since it looks like it is served hot. But these little things don´t matter so much in this series I believe.
Meykurt - thanksies mate. Nice of you to drop by and do come again!!! :D
Farvus - In Finland we do as the Finlanders. (http://www.finlanders.fi/ (CIO (Check it out)/)) It is read from left to right. :P
---------
So here´s another quickie illustration for a newspaper... This is about finnish literature exported into Europe and how they are finally braking through, like HIM and Rasmus and some other rockbands have done. So you gets it? Well... It was a REAL quickie so don´t judge me too hard. http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/finpatriot.gif
http://www.todellisuus.net/~hiipi/Pics/concert.jpg
Now I will take a time-out to resize and upload some of the column pics.

Definitley post more of your column stuff!
I really like this style, like I said before, clean and readable... deceptively simplistic.
Yeah, that was really what I was asking about. My mistake is that I forget about composition until about half-way through, and then I try to retro-fit the image to work as some sort of composition... I've gotta work on that...
And thanks for that link!! Treasure mine!

Very funny, Hiippi, I got hooked. The guy is so spacious, so much fun to watch him. My favorite (well the whole last update is very strong) are 1,3,4,8. Love very many from the post before too:2,3,8,9. Like the one when baby kicking inside of a pregnant woman, funny. The most-most favorite is cutting not needed parts of the photo for CD cover, 4, so funny, so cynical, so true :). I love it.

Tschööööö!!! Thank you all! Here´s another addition, a book cover. They are printing a new edition of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and wanted me to do a new cover for it too... Original Ralph Steadman drawings were to be used but I got to choose which ones and do the lay-out and coloring and such...
This is NOT the finished version, I have already changed the fonts a bit and also I believe I have to enlarge the back text since it´ll be a pocket book. Smaaaalll one. So text has to be visible. And since it is negative text, it has to be even larger than if it would be positive. (Text is white, not black)
Here you goes, I will post the final one later. First color sketches (of which they chose the second one) and then a bit more worked up piece:

No idea what the text says, so I can't look at the cover in relation to the books content, but yea definitely looks good. Something that would definitely make me stop and look if I'm in a book store haha

I think book cover looks great! Such a crazy exciting style. Don't know this story to my huge shame, but it looks like the guys are total nuts. Will certainly take the movie or book now. Love the energetic colors, sympathetic lay-put and dancing letters. Very nice choice of different choice, they add so much to funny, active sensation :). The general impression it will be fun if I take the book :).

The final version looks a bit crazier with these big letters, maybe it is better, I'm not sure. the one before was a bit stricter.

Heya!
Sorry but I am AGAIN in a hurry. Have to drop these in quickly and get back to my paintingclass...
So, the story is that I found A Phil Hale book GOAD and got slightly inspired... I studied his works and tried to catch something of it to my own pics (without too much success) but at least what I captured was a really dark mood... :D I dunno. They are angels after all he he. I only have these now so apologies for the inconvinience of the small thumbnails and huge pics but I believe you ppl will cope. Also thrown in an additional Phil Hale -valuestudy painting copy which I did under the influence in a bar, bored, waiting for my girlfriend to get off from work (whch eventually led to me waiting for six hours and getting pretty pissed (pissed meaning drunk - not angry)).
Each painting measures 10 by 10 cm, they were made for a miniatue painting biennale somewhere in Poland and they should be on display there at some point this summer. GO SEE!!! Ha ha! :D
AND ALL THE PROPS TO MR HALE, HE IS SO FRIGGIN COOL!!!

Here´s a little something again:
(already posted on the Finished Work -forum)
This was an assignment we had to do at the painting class, an anamorphic picture. I took the picture of a friend for this but ended up using it on both of these paintings, also the one above. This measures up to something like 50 x 30 cm (30 on the left side, y´know... ;-) ). Don´t know really, this was an estimate.
Here´s how I painted it:

Another double post, just posted all this on the Finished -side.
Made a compilation of these with my self-portrait. It is meant for a "yearbook" - we are to put one picture of a project we´ve done and I chose to do this.
Was thinking of naming it something like this:
"We were listening to music, me and my cherubs, and would have enjoyed it tremendously if there wasn´t for Azazel, Dagon and Urakabarameel ruining it for all of us singing out loud..."
But that name is stupid, you may help me with that if you wants. :D

Orkun - I dunno which sketch you mean but some of these are pen&paper, some oil&canvas and the rest wacom&Photoshop. Occasionally some Painter thrown in just to give it a little exercise, so it won´t get fat on my harddrive.
Theo - Däng juu too!
Glikster - Cheers! It was a challence for me, haven´t really done anything like that before. Heavily reffed they were and also stle some bits from other artists. :D
Peniclator!!! - The swedish angel... Heh, glad you like the columns, I hate them nowadays. :D I was behind the camera most of the time, yes. It is me setting up the sign though, in the first pics. My design on the sign btw, just found a piece of wood like that from the shore and dragged it down to our workshop and painted it fiery! COOOOOLNESS!!! Ha haaa! And yes you gots it right, we just left them paintings there hoping that no-one will steal them. And no-one has so far. :D On the guest book there was a marking saying something like this: "Thanks for the gallery, was nice paintings, had fun, had sex." ...and then signed by their names. Ha haa! And about the palette... I dunno, it just comes out like that. It is not realistic at all though... :D
And you caught me, it is his painting in there!!! :D I applied the same painting to all of these three, to give texture. Maybe on the rest it is not quite so visible but it is there anyway. Damn, should I say this out loud or not? ;-)
Jho - Kiitsa!
Hurricane - Cheers right back at ya Ruotsin nalle!
"Mean Machine" MacNevin - Njaaaah... I think alcohol is the nectar that provides me with all this inspiration and skill. Sober me up and you drop me down...
...back to the gutter.
and Maxetormer - Thanks for that! I mentioned there before that the hands were not done yet at all, now they are already a bit better but I fear I have to fix them digitally. I have noticed some flaws in her claws, yes I have. And about the legs... Hmm. Dunno if I can do much about that anymore. We´ll leave it be. The publisher has approved these already so I am off the hook but of coz I would want to make them perfect. (too late for that I guess but as_close_to as possible) And you are right about the details in the buildings, they are a bit too vague at the mo. Had no refs for them so I just sketched something in there and you can tell that too much. Will fix.
Thanks y´alll, I will get back to work!!!

Hello, Hiipi. probably a bit late with crits on the book covers. but just in case, my thoughts.
The one with a woman in tunic. I like her figure and the melancholic expression of her face, she already gives some heads off about herself with this static pose, passive body language and meaningful face features. So I like this. About colors. Looks a bit loud to me and very competitive. maybe they told you to do that.
But I blocked these bright orange mountains behind her and tried to imagine some darker color, more like the color of the dress of the woman in the picture above this one or the color of sly and water in the first landscape. It will make the figure of the woman in tunic to pop up more, I think. well, it needs some searching for the right temperature of the shade still. And although there is no wind in your picture I wish the dress of the woman was kind of blowing on the wind, not Marylin Monroe style, no, more decent one. but some beautiful waves with the hint on delicate thin fabric it made of, maybe.
Yeah, the hand is way too bigger than the other one.
In the second book cover, well the feeling of catastrophe is not so big, for me. the body language is almost calm. And again, all the colors compete with each other, hard to tell which is the main focus. The main character's hands are way too long, or yeah, leg are too short. The silhouette in front of the burning building looks too contemporary. It steals the illusion of the time when it happened you know.
I like the first painting. mainly for the cold air and water. The shore looks too warm for me though, I don't think it will be possible in the cloudy, cold day like this to have this shade. it should be cooler and probably less saturated.
Wonderful cartoons, as always, funny and great execution.
I miss you lyrical stuff though, like the theater poster. It was very sweet and touching, probably because of transparency of water and light delicate colors.

nice updates! going in order, the oil pieces you have first look great! really beautiful stuff, hard to say which I like better though I am a sucker for environment pieces hehe. as always the comics you've got are really well done, nicely painted and funny. the 3 after the comics are definitely my favorites of this update, such a great feeling in them all. I especially like the first one, the scale of the ship is well done, definitely feels massive. just hit me as I look at them that it looks like you keep zooming in from picture to picture (least that's how I saw em :P) nice touch on that hehe. lastly, really nice book cover paintings, really cool that you did them in oil then in PS. the Pompei one is really nice as well, captured the event well I'd say. nice stuff once again!

Hey you all!!!
Thanks for the comments. So it happens that I returned these to the publisher like this and they were happy (I am not too happy about them though but you don´t have to tell anyone...), only thing is that now all of a sudden they want 15 mm bleed with the pics and of coz I don´t have such a luxury with them. So I have to create it. Otherwise quite an easy task but not in this case since a lot on the pictures is based on the paintings and the visible brush strokes, which I obviously don´t have when I start creating new surroundings digitally.
Darn.
But here they are:

Neat stuff. In your own work or when a client allows it I'd like to see you get a little more painterly.

OKAY OKAY OKAY!!! :D
I am sorry not to have too much stuff... First, I have been on a holiday for a month around Europe so haven´t got much from that time and second, I have been painting quite a lot and regretfully I do not have pictures of the paintings I did. I simply forgot to take pics and now they are all in Germany. So good riddings to them, I hope they live a good life in Baden-Württemberg area... They were not SO spectacular anyways, don´t miss them so much.
Well here goes the rest anyway, no explanations but pictures.

that's all right... we've all been a little slack recently... (ok, I mean I have, but still)... as always, great cartoons! I'd love to see those paintings, but I'll have to make do, I guess....
