- (image 1 used to be here ) -
EDIT: Thanks red.
Just a small update, I decided to change the composition.
- (image 2 used to be here, yadda yadda ; P )
EDIT2: Ack, I changed it again. Its still a wip and needs plenty refinement, but this is more or less what I'm sticking with.
- (and yet another image removed ) +
EDIT3: Ok, its about as finished as its going to get. Maybe some more twitching around, but this is basically it. *Sigh*.

The Reaper's Familiar
While Death is busy with his daily routine of crossing souls over into the afterlife, there are those who are not yet ready to be taken. The Reaper has a pet, a ghastly creature who acts as his Messenger. This Messenger meets those who for a moment face mortal peril but do not know it. He informs them that they are near of dying, but that it is not their turn yet to be taken, and so they must wait. He acomplishes this with his grotesque appearence, which usually is enough to frighten away from the dangerous situation the soul in question has wandered into. Though he looks menacing, he is harmless.

Shalom!
If everything goes as planned, we will unleash Kochot tomorrow.
During the tests we noticed the mutation of fauna caused by Kochot's toxic cloud:
one, the Basser flies, which are generated by kochot's dermis' mitochondria and the sail moths which mutated into filter feeders to catch the large numbers of Basser flies. They grow as big as a horse and since they fly outside of Kochot's toxic cloud, they can be seen minutes before Kochot reaches the area.
These messengers of death won't behave aggressively.
Let them be your warning to ready your gas masks and your suits.

Messenger of Death
The messenger of death is an enormous creature that appears from the clouds once every few hundred years. No one knows where they live or where they come from but when they arrive, they bring with them the death of thousands. The messenger of death releases thousands of hatchlings to feed upon the souls of the living. These hatchlings enter the body and begin to feed until thier translucent skin becomes a hard carapace, then they retreat back to the sky from which they came.
just for kicks, here is an animated gif tutorial. I had made it for a few people who asked in the finally finished section where I have posted this image and tutorial along with the 3 previous cows I had done.

Love the ideas with these boards, have no intention of even trying to win but its good practice :)
Description: The messenger of death appears in your presence seconds before you die and if you are lucky to spot him, he will gaze into his scroll which holds all your actions too see if youre worthy of further existance . A scroll hovers around him where the name's of the soon to be dead are written in blood and because of the fact that many die everyday, they usally are seen in merged forms of four, they never speak physically, only by telepathy.

Messenger of Death
If you hear a slow, whiny howl in some desert area, you're likely to have stumbled upon a Messenger of Death. He is a scavenger known to travel all the land in search of fallen prey. When he finds it and rests to eat,the wind will blow through the little holes in the spikes on his back, which causes the ghostly howl you'll hear. Some assume these little holes help him cooling the air he breathes in,in those hot desert areas he favours. During travel,he will have them shut so as not to waste energy.

The Bloodmoth spends most of it lifecycle in subterranean tunnels made in high-altitude volcanic mountains. During this time they resemble large beetles with a tough shell and spiky forelimbs for protection and tunneling in the rocky soil. As magma reservoirs builds up inside the mountain, the rise in temperature triggers the mating cycle of the moth. They push their way to the surface and begin inflating their large, blood-red wings. Many of these bright red moths find their way to villages around the base of the volcano. The villagers fear the moth as a sign of the impending volcanic eruption. The size and time of eruption can be determined by the amount of Bloodmoth found in surrounding villages. They know this moth as the “Messenger of Death”.

The Deathworm is an usher to death. It sprays you with a stench, to mark you. Then the hellhound comes after your soul to bring you straight to hell. The Deathworm feeds on the last breaths of each of their victims. Elderly should beware.

In all fairness Oregano did type that his description was "pending" so you could have atleast allowed him to post the description before ruling it out of this weeks line up.
It wasn't considered human, nor was it considered a character.. whats left?
I would consider an elemental or golem to be a creature- and to me that's exactly what Oregano's design was, a Golem.
golem
n 2: a mechanism that can move automatically
There are many sorts of golems, created from various elements like rocks, sticks, flesh, steel, bones. What category would they fall under if not a creature.
If it had red eyes and long stick-like arms and legs would it have been accepted?
I'm not trying to start trouble, I'm just bringing up a discussion, since this kind of discussion has come up once or twice before.

Regarding Saise's entry. It is clearly a japanese (or asian) style ghost form. I do not know how CA regards ghost, but I sure do consider that a 'creature'.

Deep within Uranus, a monstrous saurian haunts the chasms and cliffs of this steaming world. First discovered (but unreported) by a team of British scientists who heard a loud whistle. Being lightyears away from home and succumbing to feelings of nostalgia they interpreted this whistle as a clear sign of 'Tea Time' and quickly dispatched to where ever the sound came from. Surely the civilised people from Uranus would welcome them to their party. Little did they know that the whistling was actually the mating sound of a Humpasaurus in heat. Naturally the British team was never heard of again, not until their bodies were found atleast. A slightly bruised digicam was found at the site containing footage of a horrible beast later nicknamed (to honor the fallen) 'the messenger of death'.

In all fairness Oregano did type that his description was "pending" so you could have atleast allowed him to post the description before ruling it out of this weeks line up.I said "actually not accepted" which means that i was hoping for some clarification of his entry when he posts the description, but still with the concept i think it had too few elements of being a reasonable entry for COW.
It wasn't considered human, nor was it considered a character.. whats left?the human/character rules are not the only requirements for having an acceptable entry...i rejected sloppy artwork or not complete artwork or copies of existing creatures also...so there are different things which i consider before deciding whether to accept or reject a piece. For Oregano's entry this time my point was that a skull and a block of animals skins/leather (?) is not enough to make a reasonable entry. There may be other elements outside the canvas which were a hint for being a creature, but there is nothing which could lead me in some way....for example fungi won with his worm in the "lava feeding creature" round, he also cropped the image to only a part of the body, BUT i could imagine what the creature could look like, since it was defined as a worm...
I would consider an elemental or golem to be a creature- and to me that's exactly what Oregano's design was, a Golem.
There are many sorts of golems, created from various elements like rocks, sticks, flesh, steel, bones. What category would they fall under if not a creature. It doesn't look like a golem to me...more like a totem of an indian tribe...nothing alive...
If it had red eyes and long stick-like arms and legs would it have been accepted?i am not sure, but i think the chances were higher with that...

It's pretty unseemly to have mods having a public argument like this. Keep it private, because it's going to kill COW pretty damn quick if every week is going to be you two having this argument.
I am more than happy to work to Fozzybar's rules. If he says my entry doesn't meet the brief, then it doesn't meet the brief. Not everyone will agree with him, but tough. If a client says your work is off-brief, you don't argue the point.

The Malodourian. Say it with me: Male-odor-e-n. Good job!
This hallitosis hellion hunts rock-burrowing grubs, deep within the cavernous labyrinths of Sillolith. The grubs, drawn to the transient bad breath expelled by the Malodourian, come out of their lairs as if hypnotized, ready to be devoured. This creature's pungent odor is essentially a "messenger of death" which, to the grubs, is always welcome.
A side note: The hungrier and more stressed the Malodourian is, the more foul rotten egg smell the breath is.
Next week, we'll discuss the Malodourian's "morning breath" for mating.

When someone wants to die and his time did'nt come yet, the Messenger of Death appears. It can not kill until it's master allows, but it plays with the deathwilling pearson in the way he will remember for eternity and certainly won't be calling Death again while standing far from the end of the line.

sorry, if I caused an argument. I just didn't want my creature to carry the name of the topic. The 'species' -sort of- is still messenger of death.
Hope this wont be rejected. ^^;

First time in COW. Here's my Messenger of Death.
http://images5.theimagehosting.com/Deathengercol.jpg (http://www.theimagehosting.com)
Story: A Pony Express mailman and his horse were killed by Indians who he wronged. The Devil merged them and tasked them with bartering with souls in Purgatory. Basically, in enchange for sending one message to someone who is still living, they must agree to move to Hell.

Description
Death is a powerful entity, but he is not omniscient. In order carry out his duty he requires the help of a great many creatures. None more so than the Nuntiusqes, The Messenger's of Death. This Creature, brought forth from the nether world by his majesty, is capable of moving in and out our space with great ease, in order to watch the mortal souls. When a soul is ready to pass, it returns to its master, taking word that a soul is ripe for collection. Death then takes heed and comes to welcome the soul into the next world.

The death messenger - this little parasite crawls into your ear and feeds off of the waves emanating from your brain. However, it is much more dangerous than your average brainleech, for it literally devours the brain in its quest for thoughts. It saves the worst thoughts for last, and your final thoughts will be of death as it devours the remainder of your gray matter.

Swimming through the ethereal sea like a demonic angler fish a Messenger of Death searches for the unmistakable psychic patterns that surround the death of a sentient creature.
When it detects such an event the MoD extends a ecto-luminescent tentacle into the quasi phased space inhabited by the soul of the recently departed.
If the spirit of the deceased makes the mistake of "going into the light" it is drawn into the ethereal and devoured.

These Messengers are burdened with the duty of collecting the souls of the dying for safe transport to their next destination. They manifest themselves only during the few moments before death, and even then only unto the dying individual. They gently gather the soul with their long, tendril-like appendages and place them inside their body for safekeeping. As the body fills, the gelatinous sac inside expands until it can hold no more - at which point it's time for the Messenger to make its dropoff.

Aptly named the Mesenger of Death, this creature has never left an eye-witness alive. Every single documented description of the beast has been similar, as well as the fortune of the authors. Seeing this creature is a sure sign of death, occurring no more than 2 days after a sighting.

When your time as come, the Messenger of death arrives, he is like your normal Fedex guys... but in less mmmh normal. With all the people dying today, The Other World gotta have good archives, so sign the form to confirm your death. Sign it, cause he will make you sign it if you don't want. When you see that guy, it's already too late.
ps. yeah i know.. they should upgrade to a network database... but there's not enough death programmer you know... so they still use paper for now..in a couple of decade your just gonna e-mail your form.. but oh well.

Messenger Of Death
- - - - -
Joratt Bible
Tome 13, Section 7
"...And then The Gods realized how weak people are, how easy the Evil affects people makeing them weak and faithless. So there came the Messengers of Death to the Earth to cure humanity of plague. Those, who never feel fear, who never can be stoped, made to sperate darkness from light..."
- - - - -
Messenger of Death is a bird-like creature that possess souls of weaked people. Every murderer and psycho is awake of Messenger Of Death's existence. When the death comes, it shows itself to grab a soul of the damned. Puts possessed spirit into "Pond of Lost", where it stays forever. There is no way back to Earth, like another incarnation... Mark below an eye is considered to be the only sign of regret that can be made - sad joke of Gods.

:) awsome entries everyone!! , like redehlert I have learnt so much since taking up these activities.
JakkaS, nice one mate.. it's so damn hot here in Sydney, but looking at that, kinda makes me cold..hehe nicely executed..
gorillagrin, wacky stuff, the whole scene is kinda dramatic isn't it? wish it was bit more dynamic in terms of composition though. brilliant nonetheless.. it's going to be hard voting as usual I think. :P
redehlert, that's ... ermm..disgusting..haha.. eeeww.. just lost my apetite for the whole day I think. :P
Digisaur, I had a very similar idea, red moth.. but I couldn't quite put it into context, you've done great, nicely rendered too.
Mike, awsome as usual, you are so damn consistant with your work. Love it and thanks for the gif tut. :P
scumgrinder, always so quick to put up yours, hehe and setting the standard, nice concept, very wacky. we all love wacky stuff don't we?

hrm =O my lame entry:
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/Zuzeca/messenger.jpg
Simply known as 'the Messengers', these creatures are something of a visible form of prophecy. They shadow people who are soon to die, ready to escort them to the underworld. How closely a Messenger follows indicates how soon you will die, from any number of causes. This, naturally, causes some trouble, as there are some who cause their own death simply because they panic at the sight of one and trip up trying to escape it. Because of this, Messengers make attempts to hide from their quarrys until their time is upon them, but admittedly they don't usually do a very good job of it, being so big (behind trash cans, in the grass, etc.? doesn't work). It's widely debated on whether the odd things can be truly avoided, but normally, people who catch a glimse (or more, 99% of the time) have just learned to get on with what life they have left, depressing as it is.

BlkCelebration, very gestural, and nice rhythm of colors. The chest seems a little too square though, it kind of take away from the feeling of somewhat lith agility.
GreeTopaz, wicked bodydesign, VERY wicked body designs and a very interesting tonal passage.
Bumskee, that pic is pretty cool, but the concept deserves some real respect.
Goran, excellent presentation, and your presentation also deserve mention scumgrinder, both do a good job of representing an intriguing tale.

Death is a lazy muther fucker... she is also an insecure muther fucker. She doesn't get off her throne for any reason but to plow through royalty, so she carries her voice through her desciples.
Of course, they only know service of the dark.
They do not hate for their hearts have long been corroded by the tears of their unwilling tasks...

Hathlua té Quirnn, the Messenger of Death who's imminent presence is only preceded by it's gut wrenching stench, silently ascends from the sky to pluck hapless victims. Bone and flesh are consumed quickly in a fury of gnashing teeth and snapping gristle, and the soul's essence is secured in one of two small vials which are tethered to the entity by cords of sinew and cartilage. There are but a few moments of utter bewilderment after consumption of the body in which the beast can manipulate the soul to the vials. The mere touch of a bared soul is instant death to the creature and during this brief moment of transition the soul is weak enough to enable the beast to capture it. The Messenger is forever bound to it's nemesis unless it transports and releases them into the eternal confinement of either Heaven or Hades. The beast cares not which soul goes where,... so just hope that it's closest to your desired destination when it comes for you.

I see a lot of entries that look like characters to me, rather than species. But anyway, here's mine:
Messenger of Death. These cowardly scavengers rarely reveal themselves to living eyes, preferring to lurk in the shadows until the lure of death and decay draws them from their burrows. Their appearance is a sign that the stink of death can not be far off.

jeffzny - i dig that dixon-esque approach to your bg! looks like you've been practicing. :) a good entry! btw, there are a lot of species, tho....so voting will be tough. i think for your entry it'd be slick to firm up some of those contour edges so i don't feel like my eyes are goin' soft, ya know what i mean. but a good entry none-the-less!

Man, it has been a long LONG time since I've played along with this exercise. I started out with a bell-hop looking messenger boy skeleton (goofy image) but then I re-read the directions to make it unhuman. So THIS weirdness is what scratched its way out of my head onto these pixels...
...2 hours later...
...Well CRAP! Photobucket won't load. The time on the screen indicating the duration of service downtime just doubled so I'm going to stop waiting and just call it a night. Of course, it is already Friday (i.e. past deadline) so it doesn't matter. Good entries though. I think the switch to a longer duration is a good thing (even if slackers like myself still wait until the last POSSIBLE second).
