Shalom!
We have unleashed Kochot, it measures slightly past 9 new ammah.
It's a second generation massive black, bred in the way the kabbalah indicated.
May he bring this heresy to an end even at the cost of all living things.
Yasher koach
great work, all.

Mantroon:
concept: Sole survivor of a planet ravaged by a cataclysm of his own making, this entity, flled with despair and rage headed out into the "massive black" (cheesy I Know) of space. For millenia it has roam the galaxy consuming anything in its path, growing immensely, to the point it can consume stars. Its loneliness robbed his sanity long ago as the entity consumes the galaxy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
MIKECORRIERO:
concept: A Massive Black is a golem of sorts, a myth among many cultures often told in modern times around camp fires to frighten those who fear the darkness. They were the bringers of pain and torture, conjured up by satanic sorcerers of the past to bring destruction to their enemies during times of war. The Massive Black was created from sinful souls, thorns, evil that lurked in the shadows, these elements were molded to create a nightmarish creature who’s sole purpose and pleasure was in the tormenting of those who stand in its path. They stand a massive 12 feet tall and seem to float on air above their thorny spike filled base. There is no use in battling one with mortal weapons since they are immortal and regenerate if any of their vine-like limbs are severed. In wars there were legends of these creatures taking out masses of 30 or 50 men at a time. They were the most fearsome of all things that were evil and dark.

Carnifex:
concept: Massive Black
is the creature who haunts us most these days. It eats whatever moves and it's tail snatches everything within range. Its poops smell a sweet odor like perfume which make it hard to resist coming closer...

davi:
concept: An alien from a world of darkness, the Massive Black scutters through the planes with no sense of sight. On it's back it carries it's young, which it covers with a canvas of thin skin for protection.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Uziel:
concept: This giant can be compared with some of the large dinosaurs. It's a herbivore that can run,hop around pretty fast. They are not agressive but incidents occur due to its unawareness of the smaller animals.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
gibsini:
concept: This creature or "MASSIVE BLACK" to the agency is the future of law enforcement, it is part organic part machine. Massive Black works using telepathic energy to hone in on bad thoughts an feelings, so when it detects a crime about to occur it simply assumes control of the would be criminal and prevents the crime from occurring, perfect or so it would seem. Unfortunately as with all earthly creations it has a flaw it cannot locate or control minds of the mentally insane, so its for this reason they hunted down and kept locked away in prison like assylums, word has it some have been there since birth. Agency is currently working on a MASSIVE BLACK 2 to eliminate this flaw so watch this space.

redehlert:
concept: "Hunger. Must feed."
That's all I heard. Over and over again. The undercurrent of this reverberating din was the droning hum of what I thought was 'gotta catch em all' - a theme song I recall from when I was a kid watching Saturday morning cartoons. So very odd! And yet, it made sense. This creature is kind of cute. But I digress...I thought it would never end! Even now, the tune and statement pings in my ears.
We thought we knew that black holes were easily predicted by general relativity. Boy, were we wrong! The 4evr-MB Dimensional Warping Device took me not to the other end of the galaxy, but rather to the other side of reality! It took me to the place where the "massive black" is devoured by entities of such magnitude they make suns look like specs of sand. If there is a god, I think I just saw it's lap dog. My retinas are seered forever more. It's all I see and all I hear. I think I'm gonna go watch some cartoons now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
xgabo:
concept: It is whispered of the creature in the end of everything, the one preying on entropy itself; the most beautiful and terrible form of life, not a god, but predator of god and man without distinction... they are born in the Big Bang, and fight for survival among its sisters, not a lot more than vicious clouds of gas by then, killing each other in an infant universe... The survivor of this struggle is all-powerful, all-hungry and its humongous body incubates for eons, growing until it becomes a black hole, then a worm hole... bringing the entire cosmos into itself, and digesting it until it everything in existence get condensed into a grain of sand, so unstable it can only exist for a fraction of a second, then it explodes... killing the creature and giving birth to a new universe.
http://www.gabo.ca/massive_black.jpg
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Azrael:
concept: This enormous snarling black beast you see before you is the horrific outcome of man’s vicious self conceit and destructive ego. Yes, once human, an unparalleled artist among men this creature once was. Praise of his work spread far and it wasn’t long into this artistic genius’s career that he devoloped an overly high value of himself. So large his ego grew as the praise poured upon him of his exquisite creations that it began to form a being of itself and overtake the embodiment of his being. What you see before you is the mutation of his very ego. Multiple arms and eyes allow this beast to produce more art than even a fully staffed studio of twenty humans is capable of. This creature can mostly be found in the heavy metropolis area of the city aided by a devote staff of lower-lifes dedicated to maintaining the delicate balance of his temperament. He looks peaceful and content now as he works away at his creations, but if he runs out of his precious coffee or needed supplies his rage can be so devastating that it has been known to wipe out entire city blocks with his sheer might.

possessed:
concept: Deep within our own minds lies buried an unspeakable horror.
It feeds by absorbing our darkest thoughts and wishes and it shuns moments of love and happiness. The countless immoral deeds of it’s disturbed host all act to nourish the abomination and it’s filth spreads like an obsidian growth through the brains as a new intellect takes over.
The sycophant is now free to play it’s host like a lifeless puppet and gorges itself into unconceivable acts of vileness and dissipation on a hell-bent path to wreck the physical husk of it’s host. The shattered carrier is now possessed.

Mitze:
concept: Massive black the largest predator of the planet Ki-Kwi. To dangerous to let live it was nearly wiped to extinction but being a enlighten people they came up with a ingenious solution. A trade deal with earth will allow them to transport Massive black here, as our environment is well suited to them. But don't worry ,as size is relative, it might be a giant on planet Ki-Kwi but here it is about the size of your thumbnail.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
rasdasa:
concept: Some creatures live in darkness, while others constantly fight to escape it, but there are others still who bring darkness with them. It is their sunlight, and as they eclipse our world, to them there's revealed. Whenever you are in darkness they can observe you while you see nothing, but wherever light falls they are blind. Due to contrary beliefe, you dosee them , they are the dark blotches on midnight deserted alleys and in lightless washrooms. They breath upon your neck while you sleep and while you piss.
They are the last visitors at our final breath.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
bumskee:
concept: Also known as the feeder of despair, this round balloon like mystical creature is only seen floating the night skies of burning cities. It follows trails of destruction of the conquered cities, it is believed to feed on burning corpses and their souls. This creature is feared and avoided and seen as an omen of the despair to follow after the destruction.

young_paddy1:
concept: The Massive Black is a weaponised variety of the Great Red Kundu, 50 times bigger and with more than a hundred gallons of the same neuro toxin/bio acid saliva as the Red this creature is highly dangerous and extremely loyal to anyone or anything that raises it. The pool of green smoking liquid was the projects chief scientist Dr Myo and a Lesser Blue Kundu, he started shouting at Dr Fransen who was taking the picture, telling her to hurry up, unfortunately for him (and his little blue friend) she was this Massive Black's 'Mother'.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
JakkaS:
concept: Discord weaver
Those spider-like creatures inhabit the furthest planes of HELL. Their appearance owe to Sa'Lalash rituals, either known as "Thousand Innocents' Ritual", when the Salasha's priests slaughter thousend of children. There are not many so despicable creatures, that cross the underworld portal and often the summoner becomes a victim. BUT, lust for having so powerful ally, makes all costs worth. The monster's venom does not kill at all, only increases a victim's aggressive instinct and causes a bloody rage. Beloved brothers fights with each others and mothers sacrifices their own children to another ritual. There was a time in history of Corason Kingdoms when honest and wise kings followed the path of war and many innocent people died by reason of curse.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
br0ken_spirit:
concept: Starhide Nightjaws
The countryside of the lands of Arathza are a beautiful and tranquile place to spend vacations. Forests, rivers and lakes, mountains... nature. A popular activity is star gazing on warm summer nights.
Though there is only one danger in this peaceful paradise. Sometimes its not the stars the visitors are gazing, but the shinning, scaly hide of an enourmous, triple-jawed monster! Indeed, the Starhide Nightjaws, as the local bestiarists have named it, creeps around with its worm like body through the night, feeding on dozens of the largest animals it can find. Ocasionally, the visitors who come to rest make for a good snack.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
JoshuaTheJames:
concept: His name is Gamoshet. He is near 3 meters tall yet light enough for a human to pick him up. He is gracefull and loves to climb trees in his forest. It is spring and today he was attracted to the white blooms on this tree.

goran:
concept: big fat flying massive black cat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
draw:
concept: The year is 2020, bird flew has killed all birds except the crow. There have been massive mutations in the crow population. The majority lose their beaks. Only the "freak" crow chicks with calcified "toothlike" structures survive. These chicks latch onto their prey and incise a gaping hole through which they suck the life out of their prey, leaving only a shell of a body remaining. The chicks do not grow old as such, just big, very big. This eventually leads to them being rendered immobile, preventing them preying for victims, and in the end death ensues. Needless to say travelling in flocks "The massive black" present an ominous cloud when on the (hunt would be to pleasant a word).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mykro:
concept: Black Malakas: Standing over 40 ft height, these are by far the largest of any Malakas on Lamau'las, and are thus revered as gods. Incredibly reclusive, they live most of their lives underground, coming out at night to bask in the moonlight.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v20/deadlybacon/massiveblackturtlefinal.jpg
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
sephone:
concept: In the deep jungles of Peru the ancient Inca's talked about a large creature known as the "massive Black". A large beast that stood 6 ft tall from it's shoulders, this creature usually walked on all 4's but was able to walk on it's hind legs similar to a gorilla. It also had a bird like beak and tusks that was thought to not only be able to break through trees, but also crush a man in half. called the "massive black for several reasons, one is the coarse deep black hair that ran from the back of it's head to it's tail. Another could be the "massive" black claws that it had on his front paws. There is a not much written about this creature, but we do know it was thought to appear in the midnight hour after a ritualistic sacrfice to the gods.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yodaah:
concept: The Massive Black was discovered a few years ago in a strange laboratory, found in the desert of Nefud. At this time it had killed a whole group of scientist. I was the only one to survive, to tell you this story (.... you can call me Ismael... ).
This thing is not from this planet. Some say that the Massive Black is a clone, born from the mad experiments of an ill-minded scientist, who founded this laboratory, but disappeared....
... and some say that this thing just comes straight from hell.

OK - before voting/posting read this!!!

1. Please give c&c or a reason why you voted for the image!

2. Feel free to comment on any or all entries, the artists will appreciate it!

not accepted entries:

Nutter
Johnny's hair grew to a non acceptable size to enter COW because he was a character and also his appearance was just an undefined black area with 2 white lines as eyes :)

BlkCelebration
Don't hurry and post an entry...your skills are 10 times better than showing in this entry...and you know yourself, that you just tried to rush in...shame on you ;)

close to rejection:

Uziel
You can do better than that actually...invest more time in the entries next time!

rasdasa
As you said it was too human-like, but the concept is beautiful, so as a first time entry bonus you got away :)

nice entries everyone, damn hard.. I voted for draw, the face and the compo just worked wonders for me, absolutely loved it. nicely done mate, the distorted face is freaky yet clumsy in a way. :)

rasdasa, nice concept, though too human like but damn it's nice dude.

Mike, love it, so wacky!

JakkaS, that's solid work dude!

br0ken_spirit, nice though I felt it was still a little too dark..

Had so precious little time for this, but now i have a full afternoon to spend at the next topic yay!
A few crits:
Mike, your update looks 100x better then the original entry.
Davi: Cool critter but wouldn't it be a little handicapped with 'no sense of sight' in a dark world. many critters living in dark areas either have long feeler limbs or highly evolved sound or smell systems. fun creature, under-developed concept.
Xgabo: great illustration with spaced out colors, one of my favorites here.
JakkaS, these keep getting better and better. Great use of outlines around the darker areas. For some reason the splitting ( dunno what to call it ) of the segments just before the abdomen annoys me..
JoshuaTheJames: great to see a really different concept. Nice use of colors.
Yodaah: aaaaaah it rocks, looks like a runaway monster from a videogame. another one of my favorites.

I voted for JakkaS, I love the lighting, the creature design, and the colors.

Other entries I that I really liked were:

bumskee: scary as hell!
young_paddy1: the face on that thing is just so weird its awesome, also the story is funny and I like how the image is presented! Its lacking something though... maybe more saturated colors and more bright lights? Good job though.
Yodaah: whoah.. that looks crazy! Awesome rendering, I like the head and the texture especially. The fading effect gives it a strange and interesting feel. Good job.

Everybody, good round as usual. Some entries feel just a bit rushed, but overall nice.

Also love: scumgrinder, JoshuaTheJames, rasdasa, Azrael.
Lots of awsome concepts too.. it's hard to choose... i've took more time looking at the above as the image made me stop scrolling.

I voted for Bumskee - creepy point of view, rendering and damn it all if it doesn't have a rooster's beak!
Major nods to Scumgrinder, MikeC, JtJ, xgabo, Jakkas, Davi, gbsini and Sephone.
A lot of sweet entries here, to all!

I would probably have voted for Goran if he'd included a proper written concept. Draw's image really appeals to me too, but it's really just a bird with an ugly head so again, I didn't feel like it earned my vote in the context of a creature design activity.

In the end, it was between JakkaS and bumskee. I like the originality in bumskee's pic, but I felt JakkaS turned in the more complete and better presented concept.

My vote to JakkaS.

I voted for JoshuatheJames because it’s nice to see a COW now and then that isn’t a monstrous beast with demon eyes and fangs and claws waiting to rip you into a dozen pieces.

ps. thanks beast master for the vote round. we love you.

hehe...thanks...it was really hard this round to find some time to do all this stuff...you know returning from prague, being tired, a lot of work to do right now at work...the website must be done for release...ah well...nothing beats a nicely filled round of C.O.W. :)

I will pick a winner when i will have some more time to analyze the entries...so far yours and some others are on the fav list...bumskee being very high regarding the creature design....

I also really liked radasa's, bumskee's, Jakkas', and JoshuaTheJames's entries. Great work everyone, there's definitely no clear winner in this round!

Hey Yodaah, where's the sympathy voting?

[edit] Dude, if it's because you're not getting votes because you thought your COW was the poo, then join the club. I can't tell you how many times I said, "Aha! Of course, this COW is different for me, but next week I could be back with only a few votes.
Lastly, I really digged the transparency of your work, but it lacked a massive feel to it being in a 'room' so to speak. Aside from that, it rocked.

Hey MikeC, totally fun. Pullin' out that Vegas nightlife look to it. All neon and sparkly.

Hey Azrael, glad you believe in your work so much, but looking beyond your own helps everyone else out - thus the community aspect of these little events.

I'm out of this! This is like the "Oscar", absolute sympathy-voting.

Anyway thanks to Carnifex, Helzon and seth1.

I quit this shit.

Votes are earned. This is not an activity to get compliments and nothing more for the images you show. Its good to have confidence, but thats different from being arrogant. Your up against some heavy dudes in here, this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37514) is the caliber of the work that takes the prize. what's the problem man? I am glad that this round showed that votes are NOT onyl for the best rendered pieces..your creature was one of the best rendered, yes you actually earned a lot of votes regardin this point, BUT fortunately there are still other points in COW which are to be considered if you want to have your piece at the top of many others...like:

concept: your concept reads like the most stereotype stories made for movies and games...a monster as a result of a mad scientists experiments in a strange laboratory...UUUHHH???!!!...how original... ;)

design: as i said very well rendered creature, but the design is kinda boring and already known...where are the fresh ideas? the areas where you would like to look at and hang for a few seconds...a twist in anatomy? And one of the things which cost you some votes could have been the transparency...the creature is supposed to be massive black, but the fact that it's transparent killed the whole idea...

Also i prefer no background than a photoshopped one...

this is all just my opinion, but i want to show you that it's too easy to say it's all built on sympathy-votes and leave...you would trick yourself and only yourself! Take the advises and crits as pointers to improve your skills...

Even if this image took you days to finish as you mentioned...i still know it, though i didn't check the posting thread again, because it showed that you really wanted to contribute a killer entry and i understand the frustration because of your expectations...but this is also one thing you have to learn for the industry...if your expectations are very high, it will hurt you the more when your piece got rejected...sometimes you are more successful with a 30 minute sketch than with your beloved piece you invested days of effort into...

And Azrael ...also talking to you...feel free to enter the next rounds of COW...before we introduced the voters name, some members gave votes for themselves also, but they got away with it because there was no proof...even an evil admin on the boards did it once *cough* :) So being disqualified is not a bad thing for future, just got kicked in your ass for this time :)

I have to say Mike Corriero's artwork really blew me away! I just loved the technique and concept of the character.
Others that I have to mention are
JoshuaTheJames: Great piece overal, I think if the topic was "huge and cuddily black" you would get my vote.
goran: great concept idea and the textured image looks great.
JakkaS: The detail on the face of your creature is nicely done, I'm not too fond of the rest of him and the shadow beneath the creature bothers me. Still a nice job.
Yodaah : beutiful job on the background and the creature itself I wish it only looked as if it actually was in the environment.
redehlert: I love that you went a different rout with the color for the actual creature, and the idea is crazy man!! keep it up.
br0ken_spirit: Fun concept of the creature the overall image looks too dark(could just be my monitor). I think the lighting could have been better by the creatues face and the house still.

I wish I had more time to respond to everyone, Too many great entries. I hope this trend continues...

Thanks to BrainBug, st3v3 for the votes, and thanks to wishes, redehlert from honorable mentions (I hope I didn't forget anyone)

Hi y'all .
First time I vote on ConceptArt . My vote goes out to Broken_spirit. That concept was just massive and black. A nice horrofying creature.

Now to justify my selection ... (hope noone takes these comments too seriously. If they ever see my dsg drawings they'll laugh their asses off ). Just the comments of a simple man... and my selection has nothing to do with sympathy voting ( who do I know here ? :S )

The few things I wanted to say were

scumgrinder Great art. Love the way the story nicely refers to the old scriptures by a jewish warden. But HOW big is it ? 9 Ammah. I don't know how big that is. A small reference to a know item would've been nice. And whatdoesitdo ?

Carnifex A very nice massive black creature. Maybe inspired by Gibli ? But wtf is with the generated noise in the bottom ? Without that I probably would have chosen you.

JoshuaJames nice to see that massive black doesn't necessarely means evil. He looks so peaceful :P

Mykro What is the orange stuff ?

sephone Looks kewl ! However , there are two reasons you say it called the massive black. 1) The claws on his front paws and 2) The hair on it's back. However, the claws on his front paws are more grey than that they are black. The hair on his back is black, however the orange stands out far more than the black. If I'd ever run into this critter in the jungle and IF I survived, I'd probably would called it the massive yellow horned beasted .

yodaah Your art-work is fantastic. However, it doesn't strike me as being 'massive'. Black and evil, check, massive, nope. Also it is a shame about those tiles, they somehow don't fit with the rest. I saw your post at the previous topic (the deep-sea monster thing) also. That one looked great also, however I still would've gone with the 'Ye Pirate Muncher' if I had voted then. That drawing had managed to incorporate everything (I was a big deep-sea creature and the whole way it fed itself fitted the monster ) and still was capable of making it comical. Your art looks great, your attitude however doesn't .

Well .. you can start pummeling me now ^_^;

Christ, these are freaking hard to vote on, so I decided to go with concept, my vote went to JoshuaTheJames, a different take on the whole thing, even if it wasn't much different, at least it wasn't evil. Beautifully handled regardless.

Hi,
I didn't want to enter in a discussion again, but I just can't let things stand as some of you guys put them, so let's get started:

Votes are earned. This is not an activity to get compliments and nothing more for the images you show. Its good to have confidence, but thats different from being arrogant.
I don't think that telling you guys the way I see it, does make me arrogant, but if you see this differently we can discuss this further...

Your up against some heavy dudes in here, this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37514) is the caliber of the work that takes the prize.
Man, I really hate it when people behave like you do. By setting "this" link to the gallery you start generalizing the whole thing. I wasn't talking about ALL the COW winners, but mainly about the way people are voting. So please stick to the point. It's very difficult to discuss like that, especially when standing alone with an opinion, because one has to re-explain the meaning of one's own words and then people tend to think that you're too self-defending and so on... . This was the case in the "Deep Sea Creature" discussion. When you have to answer to several guys twisting your words, instead of trying to discuss the point, this won't lead to anything.

You are competing against work of this caliber on every round. You push yourself to make something that holds up against that, even if its just a little bit.
First of all I don't consider every artwork in the gallery as a "caliber". There's some really good work, like the Sewer Beast from Genital Eclipse, but there's also some stuff where I didn't quite understand why majority voted for them (but I tend to think that I understand it now.) So I absolutely don't agree with your opinion and therefore don't see sense in pushing myself "to make something that holds up against that..." I try to compete with conceptual designs from creative people established in the industry in the first place.

There are crits regularly to help to learn how to do this. I've personally realized that its not always the most rendered image the one which is the most appealing.
You might tell this to a beginner, which obviously I'm not. I now that there is still a lot to learn for me, like there should be for every artist. I post my work regular and I am always open to constructive criticism. But this has nothing to do with the way people vote in the COW thread.

There are other elements I realize that are just as powerful, and in the end... entertaining. Because that's the whole point of this, isnt it? Producing entertaining images.
As I already pointed out in the discussion following COW #24, just this should not be the "whole point". It should be about the best "conceptual design", which normaly is working without having to be entertaining. But I discovered lately that you're right. At least in the COW thread it's just about the level of entertainment of a picture.

Lets not forget that this is also a learning activity. Its a place to experiment, to compete, to challenge yourself, and to have fun. Considering all this, I'll be damned if a vote gotten is not a vote earned.Well... here you're definitely wrong and in a way contradicting yourself. Your not voted for having learned something neither for experimenting, competing, challenging yourself or having fun. You're just voted for the entertainment of your picture. So some people just might have been lucky, because they were voted, but that doesn't mean that they've "earned" every vote they have gotten. (I'll explain this later, when answering the other replies.)

concept: your concept reads like the most stereotype stories made for movies and games...a monster as a result of a mad scientists experiments in a strange laboratory...UUUHHH???!!!...how original... .Yes, I agree about that. I normally try to explain my concepts in a better way, but after having worked on this for 2 days and 2 nights, (the last morning after finishing,I just had slept 3 hours) and then, sitting in the internet café, I just wasn't able to concentrate anymore in order to write down a serious concept, so I just invented this little story, posted my artwork (I was already damn late...), went home and got to bed. I know this is no excuse, but this happens, and shouldn't cost me too many votes, and honestly I didn't take it too serious, because even you, in our last discussion, wrote this: I bet more than 60% of all voters don't read the concepts at all...

C'est la vie .So I was a bit of astonished, you mentioning this point.

design: as i said very well rendered creature, but the design is kinda boring and already known...where are the fresh ideas? the areas where you would like to look at and hang for a few seconds...a twist in anatomy? And one of the things which cost you some votes could have been the transparency...the creature is supposed to be massive black, but the fact that it's transparent killed the whole idea....I don't understand why this design should already be known? It's my design, I invented this creature. I hope you won't try to tell me that there are some details in the creature design, that you already have seen. As artists, we all work from the sum of our experiences, so you could give the same crit to those who got more votes. There's always something that reminds you of something.
As for the "transparency" you're right. That was absolutely my fault. Didn't pay attention, when flatening the layers an made a mistake, but couldn't redo it because I didn't save the version containing all the layers- -lack of concentration. Don't get me wrong I don't try to find excuses here, but those things you mentioned might cost me some votes, but concerning the quality of the concept design not that much!

Also i prefer no background than a photoshopped one....Well, sorry but this sounds like complete bullshit to me. The whole background was drawn in pencils, roughly coloured with watercolours and then reworked in Photoshop. I think that the others also finish their backgrounds mostly with digital mediums. So what do you want me to do? The last time, with the "Deep Sea Creature", people were criticising me because of the lack of a real background. See what I mean? Those are just the things which really make me maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!

Even if this image took you days to finish as you mentioned...i still know it, though i didn't check the posting thread again, because it showed that you really wanted to contribute a killer entry and i understand the frustration because of your expectations...but this is also one thing you have to learn for the industry...if your expectations are very high, it will hurt you the more when your piece got rejected...sometimes you are more successful with a 30 minute sketch than with your beloved piece you invested days of effort into....Here I come to the main concern. I'm absolutely not frustrated because of the working-time spent on this concept. When I understood anything during the whole period of my life (and I'm not too young anymore...) it's that my heart really belongs to art, and that I whish to work as an artist to make a living. So the amount of time I put into this piece, is absolutely not important. It's just normal to me. I enjoy doing this. But please don't compare the COW to the "industry". I know about the industry and that was already my point when discussing COW #24. That's exactly what I'm talking about. To be accepted in the industry you also got to have a certain level of artistic skill. And this is what really bugs me here. Maybe there were some good ideas in this thread, but some of those who got major votes really don't look like a creature design. When designing a creature for a movie or game industry, it should at least look in a way 3D, so that the guys doing the sculptures are able to "read" it in order to reproduce it. It should be realistic, like a real beast and communicate the idea to everyone involved in the design process. When you take MIKECORRIERO's design for instance, this is not the case at all. Sorry Mike, I like most of your designs I've seen until now, but this is a simple 2D-painting to me, not a creature design in the way I described it above. I already did paintings in this way when I was 17 and in school. That's why I say the artistic skill should also take influence on the voters. And since it doesn't, I really tend to think that it's sympathy-voting. I'm not talking about all the voters, but I think that there is a certain amount of people influenced by the fact who created the artwork. This might be because they already saw some great work of those guys in the forum, this might also be because some are known as "professionals" and so on... . I really doubt that there would be the same poll results if people just had to vote for the concept art, without knowing who created it. Just voting for a picture. I really doubt that. No offend Mike, I just took you as an example. I might as well have mentioned bumskee (who's creature is well painted, but just looks like a giant balloon with a bird face to me; and a baloon isn't "massive" at all... and well... yeah it isn't even black- so much for the topic), and some others who strangely got a real bunch of votes. So when comparing my creature to those who "won" , this was really shocking for me. I think that my concept design really shows a mean looking, massive, black creature, in a professional way. Comparing my artistic skill to some of those who really got a lot more votes than I did, made me puke (Comparing redehlert's and mine I really don't understand this huge difference in votes, or look at xgabo's: where is the creature in this picture ?). It's no problem for me to loose a competition, but 4 votes(!) that's a joke. This should not be like this. It's sympathy-voting and it's unfair, that's why I quit. There's no chance for me to get any recognition in this competition because voting is not objective. So you can continue celebrating yourself and defining reasons why this thread is good as it is, but it's going to be without my further participation.

:hatsoff: cheers!
Yodaah.

p.s.: redehlert, sorry I didn't reply to your comment, but I don't think in the way you descibed it. So please read this and maybe you'll understand.

I don't think there would be a point in giving away sympathy votes. Votes are based on personal preference, taste and free will. I personally don't see what anybody would get from voting for something if it isn't what they consider the best option.

You have to realize that you are basing your whole argument on a bunch of assumptions and generalizations. I haven't been in that board for very long, i know almost nothing about MIKECORREIRO, yet i voted for his entry because i thought it was very well done.

You are mad because the rest of the world doesn't adjust to your own perception of yourself and your work. Amazing ... Yodaah is upset because he only got 4 votes and blames sympathy voting. I voted for Br0ken-Spirit ..and as I see it, he only got 4 votes too. The reason I, and I think more people, haven't voted for Yodaah, was, because the creature simply lacked 'massiveness' .... (and it was transparent ... ) . It just missed the black and massive part. The artwork was great , noone doubts that, but it just didn't portray the concept of this C.o.W. .

I don't think there would be a point in giving away sympathy votes. Votes are based on personal preference, taste and free will. I personally don't see what anybody would get from voting for something if it isn't what they consider the best option..
I don't know it either. But as I said, maybe some people just don't know who they should vote, so they vote the "professional guy", or the one who's art they often see in the forum or the guys they know or like, what do I know. There can be many answers to this. The fact that you don't see the point doesn't mean that this practice doesn't exist.

You have to realize that you are basing your whole argument on a bunch of assumptions and generalizations. .Sorry, but that simply isn't true. I never spoke of all COW voters, or artists. I think that I explained that.
I haven't been in that board for very long, i know almost nothing about MIKECORREIRO, yet i voted for his entry because i thought it was very well done.Well then you simply don't make part of the sympathy voters. That's quite possible and I didn't deny that.

You are mad because the rest of the world doesn't adjust to your own perception of yourself and your work. . That's a rather simple explanation after I tried to explain my opinion rather explicitely and it simply is not true.
I am practically new to this board and i got a lot of votes in the massive black and the arctic COWS, i got only two in the CHOW #1. Why? because my entry was shitty compared to the others. end of story. Or did i get sympathy votes even though the only person i have interacted with in good terms from here is redehlert? And he didn't vote for me in the massive black round..Now it's you who is generalizing. That was not my point. Well and you say that your entry was shitty. Maybe it was (I didn't check it), but mine wasn't at all.

Your logic is flawed, man.Easy to say. To prove me wrong yo ought to try it as I explained. Leave out the names and let people just vote for the picture and we'll see... I did the test and I know what I'm talking about. But if having a flawed mind means just having a contradictionary opinion to most of you guys coming up with strange explanations, then it's okay for me.

Maybe you got me wrong, that's why I said that I think I didn't generalize. When I gave some examples as redehlert and MIKECORRIERO when talking of artistic skill of their actual entry compared to mine (and there are others, but of course not all entrys),I thought it would be clear what I meant in an "objective" way. I just didn' want to comment on every entry because then the discussion would get even longer then it is alteady (look at Fozzy's comment after this one). I didn't think of your entry at all. Your's is a great creature design, it's really better than mine and you own every vote you've gotten.

Give it where you can and where you want to, and if you don't get it back don't get jaded, just learn to accept the fact that not everyone has the same opinions/tastes. It gets harder to accept this fact when you get out into the field, too true, but if you push yourself hard enough you will succeed, to one degree or another. And then it's even more important to not be petty over the opinions of others.

In the end I draw everyday because I like it not because I think someone else will, and I'll continue to do so.

Maaan. I don't attack everybody, I just respond to the comments. With Fozzy here it's different, because he commented that Mike already has said everything, although I replied to Fozzys comments (for example what he said about a photoshopped background), without getting a real answer from him.So if he yawns because he's bored then it is because for him this whole thing isn't too important.

But honestly I'm really fed up with discussing and since this isn't for the first time, I experienced that after a while it really brings you down, when nobody agrees at least a bit with you. So I just want to answer to those who didn't quite seem to understand what I meant (it's Mike I still have to reply to...) and then quit this whole thing. It's your opinion that my design was just a simple 2d painting, but do you really look at your image as being 3d? The fact that you messed up and flattened your image thus creating the transparent look is no ones fault but your own and if it wasn't meant to look like that, how did you expect people to understand that? I think it might be hard for modelers to just read your mind unless you explained it to them.I know that it was my own fault and I said that in my comment. And I don't expect people "to understand" anything difficult. It's all there. It's not that the creature is completely transparent and I bet some people didn't even notice it. It reads well and I think that any modeler would be able to build a sculpture from this.

You didn't mean to offend me but trying to compare my work with the work you were doing when you were 17 sounds like an insult to me. You seem to have a pretty big ego to have just expected that you created a masterpiece that perfectly fit the topic.Mike, I can only say that it really wasn't my intention to insult you in any way, that's why I said that I like your work in general. I just meant that I already created creatures in this way/quality at the age of 17. If you feel insulted by that, then you should feel insulted by every kid which is good at creating monsters (and there are many). In my childhood I was drawing monsters all the time and eventually became good at it. I'm serious when talking about the design quality my pictures had and if you don't believe me, just send me an email and I look through some of my childhood-monster-creations and send them to you. I do not say that your painting is bad. No, it's good, but compared to the quality of my entry it just doesn't look as good. I might try to explain it with your own artwork: when you compare your nocturnal predator to the way you designed the massive black, you must admit that there is a difference in the quality. That's what I mean when talking of the "artistic skill" or skill level. The quality of the execution of the artwork. By saying that my monster looks in a way three dimensional ,I mean that it looks as if it might be a living beeing, as if you could touch it (it's the same for your nocturnal predator). But your massive black looks, well,...painted. So considering these facts I think that my entry -let's put that straight- is better than your's and I also think that you know that. But you won't admit that, because it would proove that there is something going wrong with this poll. And since it works well for you, you don't have any interest in claiming that there is something wrong. That's at least the way I see it. Oh, yeah and concerning the "big ego" you mentioned: If I had one then I would not have been so shocked about the result of this poll, and I surely wouldn't waste a thought about entering a big discussion with all you guys. I said that there is still a lot to learn for me. Please read my comments before supposing anything. I'm not like that. I eagerly didn't claim that my entry should have won. I just compared the quality of my work to some of those who got major votes and in making reference to that I say that this poll is unjust.

The way people vote is pretty random and it could go any way on any topic at any given day, which is why everyone has an equal chance at winning one of these. Just because this time around people didn't see your design as fitting the topic or being the best....If this would be true then I could live with it. But it simply isn't (and I made the test by showing all the entrys without any names, to 8 different people ). My creature looks massive and it's black. Your's doesn't look massive it looks skinny and tall, redehlert's doesn't look massive with this long legs ,and man, it's white, white! I don't know how you see that, but I think white is the opposite of black! My design communicates the idea of a massive black creature at least more than these 2 examples, but I got less votes and this is it what bugs me.

I have lost more than half the times that I participated in the COW so where does the sympathy voting come into play? I hardly think people were voting for me just because it says professional by my name. That's your opinion, and I say that it might be, because there is the word professional under your avatar. It might be. But as I replied to scumgrinder, to proove me wrong you'd have to do the "test", which is without any names. Besides I'm not the only one to think like this. If you look through all the discussions and threads in the forum you'll find some other guys talking about a lot of "ass kissing" opposed to professionals and very skilled artists.

I think that you just got frustrated because you spent a lot of time on your image and things didn't work out the way you thought they would, .... You did not read my comments. I already commented on that when Fozzy came up with this explanation. It's not true. The amount of time putting in my artwork has nothing to do with my frustration. It's just the fact how this competition "works".

...welcome to the world of a concept artist. How will you feel when the director of a movie chooses another concept artists idea over yours ...That's not the same situation. I also commented on this. Don't compare the COW with the industry. Again,I know about the industry and I don't have any problem if my concept design is rejected when another one fits the topic better than my work. That's absolutely no problem for me.

To me this isn't a big deal, I realize you probably just felt like venting and you chose to make an example with my image. Come on Mike, that's really simple minded. If this was the case I wouldn't try to explain all my thoughts in such a long pamphlet, which obviously is not just about you.

You have to realize this is just a petty activity that doesn't mean anything and that perhaps in the business world your design would have been chosen but it wasn't, so just suck it up and move on.Yeah, of course I move on. But I'll do it my way and I don't share your opinion. Even if the COW isn't important for my professional evolution, I took it seriously, as I take everything serious that I'm involved in as an artist.
I take crits seriously and I tended to take this poll seriously. But if things go as they went -wrong in my view-, I can not simply accept that. And as I mentioned this is really frustrating for me and has a bad influence on my motivation to work. So I'd rather not participate in these competitions anymore, to be able to get to the drawing table with a clear an fresh "spirit" and without any bad thoughts.

Ok... but it sucks you know, these situations : S
Its not like I dont see what you mean or were your comming from, and I know it sucks when you're the only one defending a point of view. I don't think you are being incoherent... its just that we don't agree, but there's no resentfull feelings man.

In any case, just best wishes, and maybe I'll see you around sometime other.
Thanks man, I really appreciate.

Yeaaaah Fozzy! I just answered to scumgrinder, because to me this seems important. With comments like this you just say that you give a fuck about who participates in the COW or not.

Meeeeeeeee? You were the one who said that you quit this shit...not me, man....

if you dont like how this activity is held then dont participate, its as simple as that. this discussion makes you look like "excuse me" an arrogant bastard. this activity is as much about learning as winning, it seems you havent quite understood this.

See, and this where you are wrong. You are a great artist (judging from your posts on CA), but your creature does NOT look massive... let alone black. Most of us might not be as good an artist as you are, however, this doesn't mean we do not have eyes.

Disqualified?
Damn. I guess I should have checked back here sooner.

I admit that voting for my piece may have been a bit egoistic on my behalf.
I knew it did not feel right at the moment, but I slaved all my free time(which isn't much and is very valuable) to this piece and I guess my pride consumed me. Damn pride. *whips self senseless until point is made*

My appologies mates.
I do honor your inputs and value your opinions as artists.

Fozzy- Thanks for the humiliation, you could have just pm'd me with the freakin rules.
