I want to show two my new monumental paintings that I have created for our National museum in Kazan city ( Tatarstan Republic, Russia) to you. And tell some words about the history of creating this paintings.

First painting named "DEFENCE OF KAZAN AGAINST IVAN THE TERRIBLE ARMIES ((DEIFICATION)".

May be you have hear something about this tragically events already. At the 2nd of October, 1552 Kazan city, the capital of Tatar people was attacked by the armies of Ivan the Terrible (Russian tsar). In spite of courage by the defenders of the Kazan Kremlin after several days Kazan was captured. Many people was killed.

This idea to create the big monumental painting dedicated this tragical historical event was born in my mind 3 years ago. In that time I have created my first historical painting “KAZAN TSARINA SJUJUMBIKE” (http://www.painterilya.com/Suumbike.htm ).
In that time I have painted my first thumbnail to the future painting.

I have created several sketches. Some of them here

At the winter, 2004 I have started to work under main painting on the canvas. It was very hard work because I haven’t my own studio and working in the small room. But I can do this!
At the August, 2005 I have finished this painting and you can see the results of this work now.

It is showed the visit of Russian Empress Ekaterina II (one of the famous historical person in Russia) in to the Kazan.

People, please get over the fist one, is considered a thumnail of the finished version below, please read the post, see the picture and then post, so your opinion can become relevant to the topic.......Topic that actually doent deserve that you keep paying attention to one little detail in a thumnail of a much greater work that took an incredible time and effort from an experienced artist.

Dear Ilyas

Thanks a lot for posting these works... I wish I could see the "defense" piece up close...looks incredible on my tiny monitor.

I wanted to ask - what is the situation of arts education in Russia at this point? I am Armenian and know some artists who trained in the Academic Tradition over there before the fall of the Soviet Union...and they tell me how extremely rigorous it was... I was wondering if there are still schools which continue to train in that tradition.

I have long been a fan of Russian art...speaking of Ivan the Terrible...Repin's painting of "Ivan the Terrible and his son Ivan" is probably my favorite painting ever (my brother who's in Moscow just saw it...)

Anyway...thanks again for posting...its not often we see this kind of work on this site...

Thank you for this compare. When I am creating my paintings I`m using old masters technique. For this reason I can create such paintings and get such effects. As example, I`m using white lead, special glue and oil.

as for the paintings...
these are truly epic.
the second image is my favorite, really great draftsmanship.
you said the idea came to you 3 years ago,
but did you actually spend 3 years painting it?

Richard Schmid seems to swear by it, but yeah, I think I'll stick with gesso!

Ilya, these are incredible. They remind me of Alphonse Mucha's Slav Epic in terms of design and subect matter. I especially like the sketches. The giant arm in the Deification piece looks to be reaching for something to grab as it crumbles off the side of the cliff into the earth below. Based on the title of the painting, I assume this symbolizes Ivan usurping God's control over the land?

Congratulations on completing these, despite having a small room at home to work in (I know it's frustrating). Having them hang in a museum for thousands to see must make it worth the struggle. :)

I think that white lead is not so dangerous. Micelangelo and Leonardo used white lead too and they was living many years and died at the age of very old man.
I become to work under last painting at the spring, 2004. 3 years ago I become to make some sketches and ideas to this painting.
