I've done tons of realism/photorealism in the past. After taking a long break from doing any this was done to test myself. Just thought I'd share

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y99/anim3idiot/asiangirl_complete_post.jpg

Worked on it for 2 days on and off.
Painted in PsCs2/ Ref used, I won't post the ref just yet.

Lots of thumbs up on that .. its really good IMO .

My C+C : The hand/arm is only half visible & above the eye ... which could be glitter make-up stuff above my eyes .. it kinda reminds me of compressing something too strongly in Jpeg format .. compression artifacts or so ...

When are U posting the ref ?

Just IMO :)

Agree with Grooveholmes. Posting your ref will be easier for me to crit your stuff. It looks very good... :^^:

Being able to paint photorealistically is really handy for art. Can really expand what you can do... of course art that's purely photorealistic is just silly.

Wish I had that skill..

The second i saw it i got this itch like you were ripping off someone or BS'ing us.. then i checked your sketchbook. Damn this is an awesome piece, and you have a very admirable sketchbook to boot. Well done.

Very pretty, na, but i think the top corners of her lips (you know? at the top under the nose?) are a little bit too sharp. I love the glitter on the lids. It looks amazing. ^^

The only thing that gives it away for me I think is the hair a little bit..

otherwise if you hadn't told me I woulda been quite sure that this was a real photo!

Wow!

Great work man, as said. It looks like a photo :)

After realizing that it wasn't your ref two things came up, and it's the lips and the hair. A bit too dark hair and the lips I don't know. I'm looking forward to see the ref and compare! I'd guess the lips are really looking like that on your ref, wouldn't surprise me at all ;)

I could just say that I agree with these other guys about the lips, but I just don't care enough. This is absolutely incredible.

Thanks guys, yeah some of what was mentioned came across my mind too, but I decided to mindlessly follow the photo. But do remember I didn't go for exactness of the photo but photorealism in itself. That would take far too much time. Figured I'd have to post the photo with what I did anyways.

There are a few things I didn't notice till close to finishing, like the shape of her face, the photo being brighter overall, and important details on her hand. Then all of the obvious details I wouldn't follow to exactness like texture and every strand of hair. It was fun though

Well here's the ref

I really love this, as a practice piece or not! Can I ask where you got your reference from? I've been trying to find decent portrait and photo reference online, but it's kind of difficult.

looks real good. Do you do this kind of work with traditional mediums? I think this done with pencil would be great. Great photo.

i think your painting atually looks better than the photo,
with the exception of the hair.
id pay closer attention to the highlights at the bottom of the hair.

yeah, this is a problem I've always had with photo-realism, and to a certain extent with trompe l'oeil. I greatly appreciate the skill required, but I don't understand the why. Several times I've been granted the compliment (mostly from non-artists) that a painting of mine "looks just like a photo", and it can get under my skin a bit. I think a painting should look better than a photo, or at least more real/passionate/dreamlike/whatever.

but I do appreciate the skill

DavePalumbo : " I think a painting should look better than a photo, or at least more real/passionate/dreamlike/whatever."

-> Must say I absolutly agree with ye ... but still its a sign of very good skill & determination ... as long as someone doesnt always do photo-realistic work .. then might as well take a photo :)

A photo is jus a photo ... a photo could never capture the brilliant character details such as Lucien Freud (that is the painter .. right) .. in his portraits .. .

animeidiot that still is really good ... the above proves that with enough time ... we can all create photo-realistic ... as much as photos are "real" .. pieces on a computer ... no need cameras any longer :)

Just IMO :)
