Okay, we need fodder. Post your topic ideas here.

PLEASE READ

-=ON CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS=-

There is no hard and set rule here, but there are some things to keep in mind.

A character is an individual. This means that we are dealing with a specific person or creature, whatever it is. You can get as detailed as you want, or as vague as you want. But something individual, something unique, has to show through for your description to be a true character.

:right: Unrelated words strung together do not a character make. :left:

Character descriptions will vary greatly. They will at times be in depth. They will at times include a little bit of back story. And, they will at times be very, very brief. Below are three examples of character descriptions that stand a good chance of being accepted:

EXAMPLE 1: The Lizardman. This character is a member of a jungle tribe, and a member of the priesthood. This character holds a fair amount of authority and has a lot of presence in public, and as such must be dressed according to ceremonial ritual. The temple he is a member of is the Temple del Sol - Temple of the Sun. His design must reflect his affinity with the bringer of life, the giver of light. He should be armed, but not heavily.

EXAMPLE 2: Commodore Billipickfinster has just been ordered to take his Airship fleet and use their atomics to sterilize the Koochi-koochi invasion... by destroying his home city, where his family is trapped.

EXAMPLE 2: Fred is an angry teddybear

In presenting your ideas, anything that gets the sense of a *character* across, stands a good chance of being used. The more characterized, the more personality you pick up from the description, regardless of how many words you use, the better.

A good suggestion is to start with a name....

The Bölk, ketian droning warriors, follows orders, no reproductive organs, three external lungs protected by exoskeleton, carries 3 weapons:
close range- a parasitic organism known as "Klk" that shoots poison
A retro technology revolver, looks similar to a revolver but shoots obsidian bullets
A "B.A.R." - not really a browning automatic rifle but baptized like that by human soldiers since it has a similar strategic use. It's an alien weapon only similar to a BAR in that it's a specialized "rifle"

it's a species that adapts fast to the newest threat, adapted to use human weaponry and vehicles in two generations, so it's human like in stance and general shape. That's where the similarities end. Scientist predict an almost identical replication of humans will occur in 4 generations, once this is achieved, scientists plan on destroying them using the diferent types of virus.

No eyes, but a series of chemical and motion detecting organs are distributed on key points of the skin.

Connected to a central intelligence, they collect data and send it back and then receive new instructions, all intelligent processes are conducted outside of them. They serve a purpose similar to ant warriors. Both the retro revolver and the BAR are the central intelligence's interpretation of human weapons.

clockwork collosus- a massive, intricate, and powerful automaton. Built by a race of long dead astronauts and left on a desolate moon.

keywords- enigmatic, intricate, massive

transhuman- with advent of genetic manipulation, humans have changed themselves to varying extremes. Design a human who's natural environment is now the vaccuum of space. They are mechanics, pilots, and rescuers.

think what a human would need to survive in space, make it realistic

keywords- human, but not human.

single mother- Lucy works two jobs, assembly line worker, and stripper. She hates both, but needs the money to support her child. Her husband died years ago. She was recently confronted at the strip joint she works at and asked to have sex for money. She doesnt want to, but the extra money would mean she could leave her assembly line job and spend more time with her daughter, who is growing up in daycare.

keywords- strained, tired, sorrow

fisherman- a stolid new england fisherman from Rhode island. Born and bred there. catches lobster, clams and crabs. Likes to get drunk on Narragansett beer. has a mean streak.

keywords- working class, dirty and smelly job.

scumgrinder - I really like your idea here, but I think it's a little too generalized. As it's written, it's more of a COW with weapons - Not a bad thing! I actually like it. But as for a character, I was more interested in the source of the hive mind - the conscience behind the the hordes - what motivates that?

It may work, though.

Nephilim - those are great!

Meh, this thread needs filling up a bit :) so here goes, ditch as many as you want:

° Real Life Chess set:
In ancient Rome gladiators fought solo, this different form of entertainement exists of 16 vs 16 battles...
--> design one basic unit (pawn)
--> other 5 units (king, queen, counseler, bishop, rook) have different armor and weapons, design those too (copy paste your basic units and draw over it, or seperate designs for armor/weapons, basic unit should be same anyways)
, a bit like this image by Mike Corriero (http://pratt.edu/~mcorrier/sketch/weapons.jpg)

° 007 disguised as a Jehova's witness (or something else thats not really expected) (don't forget the gadgets he got from Q)
° Exorcist Preparing to do his job
° Girl possessed by devil
° Blacksmith forging the kings sword
° Roland the gunslinger (from Dark Tower series by Stephen King):
--> Cowboy, living in a postapocalyptic world
° bride of dracula
° white mage
° angel of death
° grim reaper
° general to lucifers army/admiral to lucifers fleet/...
° Person with nickname after a herb ;)
° Depressed empoyee getting ready for a boring job on a dull monday morning
° Shapeshifter, halfway through his morph from human to whatever his shifted form is (example: werewolf, busy transforming)
° Knight on his way back from one of the crusades

Don't know how many of you have read "When the Wind Blows" by James Patterson, but the main character is great: Max (short for Maximum), eleven year old girl who was genetically designed with six limbs: four regular, and wings! She has long, silver blond hair, white-blue wings. She hates her lab name: Tinkerbell. She is strong for her age, witty, extremely smart and scared, running for her life away from the dreaded "School". Yes, she can fly, and darn well too!

present day walkyrie from a parralel dimension:

backstory:
In a parralel dimension where the vikings have conquered most of the known world and never converted to christianism, the vikings were able to create an empire spanning 1/2 of the world. Norse mythology has carried over into present days as did art etc... The viking states are at war with christian and islam nations.

the walkyries are a type of special unit with the task of taking the bravest soldiers, who have fallen in battle, to a central processing plant called "wallhalla" run by the asgard corporation.

In walhalla the brain of these fallen soldiers gets revived and transplanted into a cybernetically enhanced body, thus creating a group of supersoldiers called "Einherjer". These soldiers are reserved for the most dangerous of tasks.

The walkyries themselves are of the same brand with the slight difference that only female soldiers are chosen to become one of them. Normally they appear wearing the asgard corp heraldic helmet, a kevlar helm with metal wings on it. The wings themselves function as antenna and radar, suited to get detailed statistics about the battle behaviour of the troops as well as a symbol for the strong beliefs of the men fighting at the front.

just something i had floating in my mind for weeks now... think i need to get a break fromdoing so much reenactment recently heheheh ;)

what would be the real challenge is to handle a detailed description of the character's behaviour, personality, attitude etc....thats the real challenge, to visualise the right expression, physique etc to let the viewer know as soon as they see the character that he/she is this type of person.

Conrad was a normal guy commuting to work when the bomb dropped. He woke up hours later dazed and with alterations. Conrad died in the blast, but the radiation transformed him dead alive.

His bottom jaw was blown clean off and his flesh melted like silly putty. The concussion from the blast and lack of necessary flesh also made his eyes pop out from his head and dangle by the optic nerve, but now undead with consciousness altered, he continued on.

Conrad was the messy sort, so his commuter was packed with things in which he could outfit himself. Some items include; jumper cables, a funnel, a tire iron and jack, a small cooler, broken toaster oven.

Every one knows your chances of survival in a post apocalyptic world depend on two things, how well you’re dressed and how cool your car is. Will you help Conrad survive?

Two from me. I realize these might not be exactly what you're looking for, so I typed down some more concise alternatives as complement.

1 - Disfavored son to a single mother of two (think Doughboy from Boyz n the Hood). What character traits might you develop from growing up without a father and beeing treated as less worth by your mother? Attention seeking? Violent? Introvert? Pleasing? You decide.
Alt. - Hustling thug from the hood.

2 - Young woman from a wealthy suburbian home with communication problems. Since birth her parents have tried to protect her by putting her in private schools and keeping close track of how she spends her free time. What character traits might she develop? Will she conform to her parents ideal of a good girl or will she rebel and go on to figure life out for her self? What will she become?
Alt. - Right wing bitch from suburbia.

got another idea from watching a halloween special yesterday:

Horror movie franchise icon:

Think freddy krueger, jason vorhees, michael myers, the scream guy, leatherface, ash, pinhead, chucky etc. A new breed of serial killer/horror movie hero.

He (or she) has to have evrything to create a good horror franchise: some kind of favored weapon, a self explanatory outfit giving a glimpse of his/her background and most of all a certain "tick" (like freddy being associated with that bladed glove or jason being associated with his hockey mask).

Character ideas can go from the cliche chainsaw-wielding psycho in a jumpsuit wearing a hockey mask, to a cute cuddly teddybear hugging 3 year olds to death.

cheers,

Shissa is a magic user of the shevass race, a humanoidlike reptilian being. He travels the world of Valan trying to pass unotice for is art is illegal, taking place in secret societies and the underground, but his thirst for knowledge is likely to blow is cover in the long run.

He stands about seven, or so, feet tall. Has Dreadlike hair and he is quite thin. He dresses in the fashion of the regular valanian magic users (who mingles in necromancy, elementalism, conjuration, etc.), which is like most common garb and caries this bag of unmentioned spell components and books. He is intelligent but somewhat shaken by the debilitating effect of spellcrafting, which might take it's toll in all sorts of mental illness, in Shissa's case, he's starting to get a little paranoid.

As a more open or fun topic, why not 'Create a Super Hero' or 'Create a Super Villan'. You could just leave the topic as open as that and see what wacky entries we get (lord knows what some of you guys can come up with), or you can specify a Alias, super powers, secret identity, weakness, etc. Then again, you could just give a name. Conceptart.org Man, anyone? Perhaps Captain Concept Art?

if it was just left to a name, it would be loads more fun imo, and would leave a lot open for creativity.

Becca is a techrat. She spends way to much time in the datastacks and neuronet. She should look, at the least, haggard and malnourished. She has recently hooked up with a techno gang out of Newpest, and they've bought her some heavy hitting upgrades. He flowing locks are now interspersed with data cables, and the datastorage unit juts out of the back of her skull like a parasite, but she's happy with the hardware.

Too many years of meth use and neuro net surfing have given Becca some tics-- She is edgy, and paranoid, sometimes downright insane. Residual personalities from the *ahem* "previous owners" of her hardware upgrades occasionally vie for control of her personality, but typically they just manifest as "voices" in her head.

Not sure if this was brought out, but Mythological characters are always in season. But to spice up the genre, mixing 2 or more mythical gods into a new (and weird) alternate being. No comic book versions, but original classical ones in modern times. This'll be good for historical references! :blahblah: :blahblah:

I've been thinking (oh dear); we've had five ChOW's now very heavily set in fantasy. It would be healthy to have some less so. Some of the more 'real world' suggestions that have been bandied about would be cool too. To have characters that are set in a world we can identify with would push peoples imaginations a bit, because the emphasis would have to be on 'character', not costume or presentation. Wibble...

Posh, you're absolutely right. Without giving anything away, this week was intended as our last foray into the realm of fantasy for a while. Five on paper doesn't sound so overwhelming, and when I initially set this up and planned it out (yes, believe it or not, I *am* following a plan!), I had never anticipated the response that we've recieved.

There's some cool stuff (I hope) in the coming weeks, and with luck, it won't fall into quite as a repetitative cycle as we've had here. I apologize about that.

As much as I know this activity's founders wanted to avoid it, I think that a character reinterpretation would be cool. So long as they're done very rarely.

For some reason, Power Rangers comes first to mind, just because it's so godawful retarded, that virtually anything would be cooler than what's been on TV for goddamn years. I envision some classic antihero spin on the childishly clean themes that I remember from back in the day.

Really any kids show could stand to have this treatment.Take the fantastical elements and make them concrete.

In keeping with some previous ideas like:
How about Aeneas from Virgil's Aeneid?
He fled burning Troy, made love to Dido and founded Rome.

Or is that not-done, creating images by already existing characters like Aneas.I think it would be extremely interesting to try and give shape to some archetypal characters that aren't really reinterpreted through the lens of modern character design in this way. We know what the sculptors and painters of antiquity thought these characters looked, but how would they look if they were alive today? What if they were still alive and no one knew it? What if they were still alive, and everyone knew it?

Also:Becca is a techrat. She spends way to much time in the datastacks and neuronet. She should look, at the least, haggard and malnourished. She has recently hooked up with a techno gang out of Newpest, and they've bought her some heavy hitting upgrades. Residual personalities from the *ahem* "previous owners" of her hardware upgrades occasionally vie for control of her personality, but typically they just manifest as "voices" in her head.I think this one is cool

Power rangers just came to mind because it'd be funny. I mean, the shows were SO lame that it'd be funny to see something actually cool spun out of that storyline/world.

G.I. Joe would be cool as well though. Or a star wars character reinterpretation. Or really characters from any sci-fi/action movie franchise.

Nobleman Swordsman, think of a fencer of 16th, 17th century, wild yet regal.
Of course the twist is that it will not be based on the conventions of the European tradition but that of a fictious world, so exotic weapons and original costuming.

Oh yes! Please suggest something that requires a little study as well as imagination! I for one LOVE studying clothes and such of the past, and I think it would be SO NEAT to see other people here draw hoopskirts or something! That would be waaay out of what I usually see around here. I also love the idea of personifing characters from ancient myths! Here are my ideas...

Aphrodite: this may cause trouble because of the nudity, but I think it would be interesting to have everyone draw THEIR ideal of beauty and still make it sort of classical.

The Sphinx: this strange half-lion half-woman/man would be very interesting to see re-designed.

Also, how about some Egyptian mythology! Maybe...

Anubis: dog-headed guy!
Hathor: cow goddess.
Nephthys: Egyptian goddess of the dead
Selket: Scorpion goddess
Sobek: Egyptian crocodile god
Horus: Falcon-headed, with the sun and moon as his eyes. Ruler of the day and of the sky, I think.

Other ideas are...

A lady from the 1800s. Perhaps a Pride and Predejuce design of Lizzie? This may not be a very well-known character, though.

A man from the late 1800s. (1870 or something) Perhaps in the design of an undead hunter or something.

Hope some of these are okay ideas!

I was thinking about something after made that pic. Sound stupid, but anyway, here I go:

Here the pic (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y181/Jujubox/foreverBetty.jpg)

Based on that loosy tribute to Betty Page.
"the pin-up spy". A combo between Pin-up and old James bond movies. Pin-up is just a cover for that character, a real expert in espionage, sabotage and sneaky missions. It will be fun if her name sound like the "Betty Page" or the "Bunny Yeager". The little extra for challengers will be to do the pic in the ol 50's pin-up mood or in some james bond's generic/titles/poster movie.

Peace and sweet new year 2006, Folks !

Mi-joo-Tah, the vampire eater: A humanoid vampire who once belonged to some alien race. He was abandoned on a vampire planet somehow and bitten soon after. The vampire virus caused physical and biological mutations. He could withstand sunlight, but was often wracked with internal pain. Vampire blood was a painkiller. Eating the whole vampire, however, would somehow trigger pyrokinetic and sunlight-producing powers.
With aspirations of experiencing his powers at their zenith, and a hatred for the vampires, he's become a terrror. He's often wearing red clothes or draped in flowing red garments. It's sort of become the only color he can wear while supporting his habit. If a contest regulator decides to use this, PM me for more details, if they're needed.

I got the big idea out of the way. I'll come back with some small ones later, as there's stuff to do and things to eat around me.

First idea:

Joe Smith is a simple man, who works in a big office where he has a cubicle for himself. But he can't take it anymore... He is not the brightest person in the world, but that shouldn't give right his co-workers to bully him; it just reminds him of school days.
So now he has decided that he cannot take this life any longer, he shall end this hell-ish life...

Joe usually wears the white shirts his mother bought him in the clearance and he has the most boring selection of ties that, again, his mother got for him. He wears glasses. He's got short, flat hair.

-----

Second idea:

Magicians? No... They had died hundreds of years ago, long before the world had reached postapocalyptic age. But this is what 'everyday people' thought.
Glimmell Foryusal had a special blood running in his veins. His raven-dark hair, grey eyes were not for nothing!
The Foryusal family had kept their magic secret after the tragic mass massacres of magicians ages ago. But now Glimmell has no chioce, the rich nobles are trying to kill poor people for their selfish experimentations and the people have no way of fighting back.
The nobles come with their aircrafts and take people by force. Now Glimmell has to protect the ones he love, the ones that are precious to him, though they were the ones who killed his ancestors... by using his magic.

Glimmell looks older than 20, but people would say he looks less than 30 none the less. He's a gentle guy with a slender body, he could be any young girl's dream guy ;)

He might be wearing his ancestors' unusual magician outfit as a fight costume

--
I kinda got into too much detail in the second idea.. but yeah the summary of that would be a young magic using human in a post apocalyptic world vs the rich nobles.. :)

grantz is the most feared alien in our solar system.. evil, twisted and armed with his deadly zap gun he is known to have conquered entire planets all by himself.

his hobbies include: desintegrating other peoples faces, torturing prisoners with his horrible karaoke skills and dancing on other peoples graves (his fav dance being the twist- he's a pretty good dancer).

now he is planning to wreak havoc on the only free planet left: EARTH. He only has one problem: his size... being only 2 inches tall, the conquest of the blue planet will be a tough task, but his advanced weaponry, his highly evolved intellect and his gruesome karaoke skills will be more than enough to show those puny earthlings who is boss in this solar system...

I have another suggestion, but it's not really ChOW. It's more like a general suggestion for all the OW's but I don't know where to put it.

Are you guys going to create somekind of hall of fame for the winners of all the OW's? Only the ChOW seems to have that, and it seems like it hasn't been updated for a while. I think it would be great to have a ChOW, EOW, COW, and IDW winners thread.

For business purposes, maybe you can take all the illos and make a hardbound book out of it, once you've got enough? Split the profits with the winners, they get more exposure, create more moolah for the site here and Massive Black. Who knows, with the talent that submits to this site, it could probably do well. Hell, I'd buy it.

But hey that's me. Just thought I'd try to be helpful.

Redesign of American Folktale Legends:

Pecos Bill
Paul Bunyan
John Henry
Johnny Appleseed
Daniel Boone
Casey Jones

With the recent merger of Pixar/Disney, some of the old animation are to be updated to determine if Circle 7 can truly compete with Pixar. Characters are to be revamped into "modern" drawing styles and dress. The designs have to be simplified enough for animation (both film and computer), but detailed enough to leave the eyes begging for more. Above all this is family oriented and should reflect that view.

I really like the idea of drawing upon the victorian and edwardian era. Aside from that, here are my suggestions:

The Masked Red Death - Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" has a broad enough description that would allow for a variety of interpretations, but I have always been both fascinated and terrified by this character.

Bluebeard was a man of revolting appearance, and so unlucky as to have a blue beard. Yet his wealth and his cunning allowed him to indulge his murdering perversions. Over fifty wives he had, and none of them were ever seen again after their wedding.

Dorian Gray's worse fear was losing his beauty to time; and even worse, the idea that someone might stumble upon the painting that holds his blemishes and demise.

She walks the night like a fleeting shadow, a phantom never to see the light of day. Forever a child, and yet bearing the knowledge and pain of a thousand years, she searches for her next victim among those foolish enough to share the streets with her nocturnal presence.

That's it for now.
I also vote yes on the re-vamp of well-known characters.

Kin.Del.Ing1A - In the infant stages of advanced bipedal robotics, the fiberoptic wires of Moritech droid robots could barely stand-up to even stovetop heat. They were already hot relaying other functions, and the conductivity of metal wasn't a help. There was no way to stay afloat AND keep this droid cheap for consumers. Heads were rolling as to what to do, until another division hinted at an answer: wood.
The other department's chemicals could "drug" wood into being 99% fire-retardant. Kin.Del.Ing1A is the first robot of the XK series, shelled with this wood and donated to a fire department after successful lab tests. Kin.Del.Ing1A's ability to stand up to burning buildings will be great Press for the company.

So, the basic idea is a wooden robot that fights fires.

Kim Madsen - Long hours, heavy workload, and stupid people all day. So... why doesn't she quit? Well, when you're Satan's secretary, it's not a breeze to walk away. Though she's still pretty most times, she occasionally blacks out or has insane fits from the torment of her job. Catching her at either time will grant you a view of her ugly "true" self, mirroring the wickedness of her soul.

Wrath of God - Angel? Demon? Nobody knows. They do know his otherworldly presence stands out, and he can really kick some ass. His title should tell you the real story.

Non-Human football fan - Alien, robot, Michael Jackson? What does it matter? Can't we all just enjoy a good game of football?

A Primitive Vampire - Humanity isn't the only bipedal, opposable-thumb-bearing, big-brain having, tool-using species to undergo the hell of natural selection. Vampires were on the million-year grind too.
You just have to show one...

The Tormented - Jake hated his life so much that he gave it away one night. It didn't matter so much how, but that he succeeded in killing himself. What he never counted on was what happened after... Dante wrote that suicides shall forever be tormented in hell as "living" trees, bleeding out for eternity. How do you view the eternal torment for one such as Jake? He pawned his soul for a quick end, now it's time to pay for it.

Querianaielle, the ugliest elf - Querianaielle was a beautiful child, growing up in the Elven Tree City but when she reached the age of maturity, things began to change. At first it was barely noticeable but, though her parents tried to hide their swan's transformation, others began to notice the "ugly duckling". Elves are prideful creatures who, while they'd never turn out another elf, had some rather cruel ways of ostricizing those not up to par.

Scottish Dandy - It's been said that the reason Scotsmen wear kilts is because sheep are afraid of the sound of a zipper. But putting that aside, William of Ornshelm wasn't like other scotsmen of the highlands. He had a bent for fashion that went -beyond- kilts. Some of his creations were downright wild! The men never could quite bring themselves to wear William's creations, but one or two of the women were bold enough to try.

Ok, more concepts later...

He always appear in dark clothes, hodded, carying a strang looking festival mask. He propably have thousand of those mask, because whenever he appears, he appears with other one. What did he want? Why he wander through the building, why he don't spoke a word? No one knows the mystery of Il Tuccatore, and no one want to discover it.

Rhuu - 'Rhuu' isn't his name. No one know his name. Unnamed he is. And he is an avatar of havoc and destruction. He wander from town to town, from city to city, from country to country... in seeking of perfectness. And, if he don't find it, he eradicate the entire landscape with everything on it, because he can't stand unperfect things. He have unlimited power. No one can stop him. Maybe, he don't see the thruth - he seek for perfectness, but for him nothing would be perfect, because he is perfect? For thousands of deaths it doesn't matter at all...

I have to agree with this, on both counts. Futuristic drug dealer sounds really interesting. "Used to be pretty lady with terrible liver disease in film noir style" is not something I want in my portfolio. Sorry its just not. In fact, unless the pay was pretty good, I might even turn down a paid assignment like that. I certainly wouldnt go see the movie. I just... its not believable. Its goofy. I wasnt crazy about futuristic eastern orthodox autocrat either.

I think Oblio is trying to engage and challenge us with unusual topics and the formula has sort of become one of reversals... pretty orc lady, non-japanese geisha, non-spanish toreodor... I'd kind of like to see us get back to basics. Or at least characters that make more sense.

Futuristic drug dealer makes sense. Will there be drugs in the future and people who try to sell them? Of course.

Just recently my dad was telling me about an english folklore of a person/thing called "Spring Heel Jack"
He was suposedly a demon man who could leap great heights in one bound. He had been sighted jumping from roof top to roof top around london victorian age.
People said he was like a demon man thing that breathed blue flames and had great firey eyes.

I thought he would be quite an open character as no one quite knows what he was. He could be someone of illusion using technology to fool people (steampunk style) perhaps newmatic legs of somekind that made his incredible leaps and also maybe He had a gadget which made him look as if spat blue flames. He could have generally been some type of strange demon though too.

The choice is yours :)

Heres a Wiki with more information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_Heeled_Jack
Ignore the batman looking illustration, his appearance varies.

Has the ability to utilize the powers of both sides at will, and can even combine them to transform him/herself into something combined, opening portals, manipulating the souls of those around him/her, even transforming into a form of both angelic and demonic traits. Is an outcast and is constantly on the run; has had visions of the endtimes since toddlerdom, causing great emotional distress. Uses different souls to cloak him/herself from the opposing forces.

Glad to see the CHOW trucking along nicley since I stepped down - Trevor and Oblio are doing a bang up job.

Something I'd dearly love to see, and this is just a suggestion, is a return to the provided description. It's fun to come up with your own for the piece, but when you're doing characters for clients, they provide that information for you. You can (sometimes) embellish it, or change it, but most times, the client has something specific in mind.

It's your job to match what the client wants, not the other way around - that was the whole idea beind the CHOW when I set it up.

And, the provided description was one of the big factors that set the CHOW apart from the rest of the activities.

Anyway, again, just a suggestion.

Lots of Lurve,

I actually think a challenge more in that style would be just what we need. Nifty idea, Oregano.

Also, just another CHoW suggestion:

Sunstruck

She opens her eyes, a regular occurence. This time, however, her eyes are fixed upon something entirely new and foreign. It burns so bright in the sky, it's so warm, so effluent. It's almost...distraction. She's confused, confused, fearful, tantilized...she has opened her eyes and has seen a sun for the first time.

- female
- character cannot be vampiric
- think about what kind of emotions she would have, given the type of person she is, and how her body language would reflect that. Not only that, your take on this concept should let us know why she hasn't seen the sun ever.

Solemn Nomad:
He/She travels the world, why are they sad? What have they added to their personal effects from their travels? What about them shows that they are solemn? Do they adorn themselves with items that hint to their past?

Awakening Giant:
Is this the birth of a future leader of the people, or an actual giant waking in the morning?

Masquerade King/Queen:
This might be better suited for October, but I figure this could be a fun one for Halloween. Go balls out and create the most ornate and extravagant Masquerade character. Are they just a party goer? Or is this their guise for vigilante work. Are they hero or villain?

i would gladly put full descriptions for my above suggestion if we didnt have to write one for each individual entry
but as the chow exists now where we have to write descriptions
i would prefer just to have a topic title be open ended
it doesnt make any sense for us to have a description and then have to write ANOTHER description (some of which i have read contradict the initial one in the first place) and the truth is
when i browse this forum i look at the initial description
and then the artwork. no offense guys but most of the spelling and grammar in these descriptions is atrocious (not meant as an insult to any foreign participants translating cause i know how hard it is)
and i really dont often care about the sub descriptions and im sure many of you feel the same way about it.
and now that votes are awarded based on having an extra description.....

September 21st, 2006, 01:43 AM
Hopefully I didn't miss any thing too similar to these. I kind of scanned the current suggestions. I just like coming up with ideas.

Space Pirate. In the distant future, human and alien races trade across vast interstellar distances. Like the Terran Golden Age of Piracy, the respective military forces of the races are tied up in conflict and thus the merchants willing to risk the long passage between worlds risks not only the ravages of space and nature and their own lonely mind, but the constant threat of pirates living outside of authoritarian reaches. The character in question is a crew member of an interstellar pirate ship. She lives a life that is rough and patently violent, in which she can go years or even a lifetime without going planetside. Most all of her supplies, including clothing, comes from the ships she raids. Morals are a no; battlescars, a plus.

The God(dess) of Lost Things. All those mismatched socks and mislaid watches and wallets and strange objects left on plane or train or taxi have to go somewhere- and someone has to care for them. That's just the way divinity works- for all things, a divine being, even those things that the rest of the universe has forgotten.

Sewer Mermaid King. Beneath city streets, among waste and giant long-forgotten alligators, there are mermaids. They may not be the pretty little fish-women of myth -they are urban, begrimed and toughened and adapted to survive in the harsh environment beneath the city- but they are mermaids nonetheless. He is their king.

The King of Mars. Meet Joe. He's old, wrinkled, hairy and dwells either in one of San Francisco's homeless shelters or on the benches and greens of Golden Gate Park. He tells anyone who will listen that he's the King of Mars. They never believe him, the poor homeless louse. Too bad for them that he's not lying, or crazy. His people are coming for him, and they aren't happy.

The Reverted Soldier. In the future organized government was destroyed by the private military power of Corporations. With external regulation defeated, the Corporations then turned upon each other in a bloody 150-year battle for Earth and her consumers termed "The Corporate Wars". After repeatedly losing troops to battlefield headhunters (and yes, I mean headhunters in the "hires good people out from other companies by offering better pay/benefits" sense), the company Gentech, Inc set out to engineer a perfectly loyal soldier. For the most part, they succeeded, and began to dominate battlefields across the planet. Something went wrong with our character, however, and he suddenly found himself amidst a battlefield wondering where he came from, why he was fighting and who was pulling the strings.

The Experiment. Dr. Mettalico was a mad scientist of the mountain peak castle and humpbacked assistant variety, bent on making monsters. Of course, the torch-toting mobs got the good Doctor one day, and his hunchback too, leaving the Experiment alone in the dark, crumbling castle that was its womb. The Experiment is very lonely now. All It wants is a friend.

The Voodoo Doll. She made the voodoo doll because that man was stalking her. A little sawdust, some blood and hair and she had it: a three-inch puppet. What she didn’t know was that she had a gift, and the little voodoo doll was alive inside its sawdust-and-stick head. That was okay, though. Like the man he was modeled from, he was obsessed with her, and didn’t mind taking a few pin stabs or candle burns if it meant being in her hands.

The Elven Barbarian Queen. Tired of the solemn dignity and poise that made any emotional outburst utterly taboo in elven culture, she led a band of dissatisfied elves into the northern wilds to form a tribe of violent, passionate, reactionary barbarians. Over the years, feeling stifled by standards for “proper elven behavior”, more and more elves young and old felt the primal call and joined the her. She was always a kind of embarrassment to the proper elves, something to laugh and sniff at from within the city walls, until the day her massive thundering hoards stormed from the North to raid and ruin the elven capitol itself.

*is nervous.* First post, please don't eat me.

haven't been around here, like ever, but I like the idea of something more open ended. It's very easy to add everything the description tells you to add, but it's a lot harder (and way more fun) to interpret a character. I'd even go for a single phrase, like "manically depressed clown" or "mime warlord" or even "pretence" and leave everything else to the artist. It'd be a lot more inetersting than something too specific.

Gonna try and join up with the next one. Great ideas trevor and gesthsemane, btw. Think I'll go think some up too lol.

boo to the Ghostbusters remake. There was already that animated series, both of them I should say. Let's go for something more original. It's such a creative holiday, we should do something really extravagent.

edit: On second hand, perhaps rehashing could be the way to go. I myself am still not gungho about doing the Ghostbusters, but to make it somewhat inclusive of that, we can redo famous monsters and horror film icons. Everyone from Nosferatu' Graf Orlock to A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger.

I say no duplicate entires though, and it must be a character(s) from a film classfied in the horror genre-though it isn't my place to declare, it's just my suggestions.

To up the stakes, maybe have a revamped movie poster included!

I've always wondered, who hunts the hunters--Sam Fisher of Splinter Cell fame, Garett from the Thief series, etc. Fiction has offered us so many skulky protagonists, yet what if we were to add another layer to it by trying to understand things from the perspective of the enemies who have to deal with these sneaky bastards?

The concept is: an Assassin Hunter. Someone who is equipped and trained to deal with someone who is rarely seen, yet poses a lethal danger. This is NOT someone who guards a location, waiting for Sam Fisher to drive a knife into his neck. This character proactively seeks the destruction of thieves, assassins, and their ilk. Do you really need a thief to catch a thief, or something else?

I'll leave the time period open, but imagine what you'd have to come up with to catch and/or kill this guy (http://assassinscreed.uk.ubi.com/)!

welp I guess I shall put in my 2 cents. I know that for right now you are doing guest hosts, and its been mentioned and tried a little bit before, and I shall mention it again. A team up with environment of the week, but more along the lines of something like the skillful huntsman. We go for a month. We vote on a story to illustrate, pic some characters and environments and produce a re-invention for a month. When it's all done, make a big poster or something. That way we are all working toward a goal, but there is not a huge worry of trying to force a character into an environment or vice versa, but at the same time are able to take a ideas by looking through both threads. Just a thought... It sounds like a tall order I know.

Hey zwei, by "modern umberto D" do you mean to redesign an old man who rents his room to prostitutes? Hehe, you are really going obscure places with that suggestion - and I would argue most people don't know the movie. Try being more specific so that people know what you mean without having to do an internet search.

his landlady rents his room out while he's not there.

I thought it would be challenging; attempting to convey a superficially tidy, polite, old man who loves his dog while hinting at the inner struggle which puts him in the path of a train :)

the film isn't that obscure, I believe it's on the IMDB top 100 and I think he's one of the most loveable characters ever and it would be interesting to see how he was portrayed. but, perhaps you're right, I wont stray so far next time :X

Okay, this'll be my first post. Hope I'm doing the right thing.
So characters, right? Here goes:

In the 25th century, Imperial Earth and the confederated Belt habitats have finally amalgamated, Dual Polity law extends throughout the Solar System, and emissaries are busy extedning the spread of this law to Earth's many extra-solar colonies (they have faster than light travel). The technology exsists to turn these emissaries into super-human cyborgs, but the two halves of the Dual Polity, ever afraid that one might gain advantage over the other, stipulates that no single person can get all of the enhansements.
Thus, Emissaries come in pairs, a BRAIN, with mental augmentation but no physical, and a BRAUN, with physical but no mental. One is always from Earth, the other from the Belt.
adjectives, Earth: Old-Fashioned (as in cultural reconstruction), artistic, rule-bound
adjectives, Belt: Utilitarian, sarcastic, detail-oriented

Is this too constrictive? Too much description? I hope I'm doing this right. :/

Here are my ideas:

1.a character who is the an amalgam of various widely known cultural characters and icons.
2.a person a dystopian future with items of the past with him/ her.
3.a character with an imaginary friend. both the character and friend are in the image and the imaginary friends appearance must be symbolic of their pesonality/nature.

also: illustrate an image of your concept.org persona's name eg if i were to do mine it would be a freaky living fetus of a gerbil.
the appearance of the persona should be able to accuratly tell us what you think of the name.

Lets see...
A brilliant chemist/alchemist who comes from a highly unstable past, like the mixtures he makes. He is very young, probably only in his twenties, but he is one of the best in the world. He's neat in his lab, but messy in most other areas of his life. He is also a musician.
A magical prodigy who also has a highly disturbed past and is very young. She is highly talented--but also highly unwanted. She is charismatic, amusing and slightly eccentric due to her unhappy life, but neither Heaven nor Hell want to accept her when she dies. It has granted her a (reluctant) immortality, but she is frequently lonely, since rumors of an awful curse surrounds her, making even humans reluctant to see her.
And lastly, a sunny, bright healer who has a dysfunctional family, with three stepfathers, one an alcoholic, and a father who is so completely moronic that she can't believe he contributed to her genes. :q Her family is also poor, so her mother is often out working. Being an only child, this has driven her to be the best worker at the hospital in her small town, so she won't feel so lonely. She is the best worker and clearly good at what she loves, and there should be talk of med school, but her mother's never home to find out about her daughter and there's never enough money.
...These aren't gonna work, are they?

*Goddess of Vengeance - So consumed was she with her quest to exact revenge on a former lover, her eventual suicide ended with her ascenscion to a high post in Hell - the overlord of those who in life thirsted for revenge.

Desperado Vampire - Marooned in a sun bleached desert in the Southwestern US, finding ihis/herself beset on all sides by enemies, the vampire affords great risks to survive the wild west.
Wounded Soldier - The injury is mortal, and they know it. In the heat of battle (wars past, present or future), the lone soldier finds themself at peace.
Unemployed God - A former diety who used up his/her fifteen minutes(centuries?) of fame, now working a menial job to get by in the mortal world.
Supernatural Slave-Driver of Witches - A Puritan holy man who finds the means to enslave the wicked forces within his village. He is callous & methodical in execution his micro-inquisition.
Stonewrought - The strangest member of the Paris Metropolitian Police is Det. Stonewrought, a titan magically-animated Greek statue, in addition to its incredible skills of deduction, Stonewrought's ability to speak to art make him a valuable additon to a city plagued by a mythological resurgance.

Cheers!

Ok, here is an idea:

We are all ranked as gladiators depending on the number of posts we have made.

For a character how about we design the gladiator that corresponds to our rank?

Here are descriptions of some of the gladiators:

Types of Gladiators

Andabatae: wore helmets without eye holes

Catervarii: did not fight in pairs, but several together

Dimacheri: fought with two swords

Equites: fought on horseback

Essedarii: fought from chariots like the Gauls and Britons

Hoplomachi: were like the Samnites, but more heavily armed
They wore ocrea on both legs and mail or leather cuirasses

Laqueatores: used a noose to catch their adversaries

Meridiani: fought in the middle of the day, after the wild beast fights
They were lightly armed

Myrmillo: wore a large galea with a fish on its crest, a manica of mail, leather or metal scales on his left arm, ocrea on at least one leg, a scutum and a straight Greek-styled sword

Ordinarii: were the regular gladiators who fought in pairs in the ordinary way

Provocator: was armed like the Samnite with a parma and a hasta, his opponent was often the Myrmillo

Retiarius: wore a subligaculum and a metal galerus on the left arm
He carried a net, a dagger and a trident or tunny-fish fascina

The Samnite: used scutum and ocrea on his left leg, a galea with a large crest and plume, and a gladius

The Secutor: carried a large oval or rectangular shield, an ocrea on his left leg, a round or high-visored helmet, manicae at the elbow and wrists, and a sword or dagger

Thracian: wore ocrea on both legs, a small square shield, a helmet, a sica or the Thracian sword.

I'm sure you can find more infomation from the net. There's no need for the gladiators to be actual Roman gladiators (they could be sci fi or fantasy) but they need to be warriors involed in spectatorial combat and they must adhere to the ethos of the weapons listed above. For example, the gladiators could actually be cybernetically enhanced warriors (think Battle Angel Alita), inhuman (orcs, ogres etc), or even robots, mobile-suit mecha riders.

Anyway, just an idea...
