A man/woman of the sword in an age where the gun is the symbol of power this person still holds on to their old ways while struggling with the modern world around them. The piece is to be the person, their weapon (I said sword but as long as it's not a gun/mechanical projectile, bows/arrows ok) and their dress. It shoud express a mix of old and new. Be creative!

Ok this one is pretty open...
Star craft 2 has been announced. Probably there's gonna be some amazing cinematics. But they need someone to come up with new concepts.
Concept one of the main characters which is also a new unit for the latest blizzard production.

Alright, this has been kicking around in my brain for a couple of years yet but i have never had the balls to try even starting to conceptualize it.
picture the scene, an advanced race manages to get some cosmic directions horribly wrong and crashes its rather nice advanced fleet into earth, (I'm hoping your getting the advanced thing that I'm trying to push here) right, so they crash into earth scattering their fleet over Europe, oh yeah, i forgot to mention, its 1944. So you suddenly have Nazi's, Soviets and the Brits (who would undoubtedly pass it on to the USA) with their hands on some amazingly world changing technology. So now its a race to get to space, to move the war to another surface all together. flash forwards 20 years, both opposing sides made it to space and now you have a situation where a Nazi based society exist, a soviet based society exist and a capitalist society exist. all 3 have set up many colony's on various planets, but they have yet to stop fighting, what i would love to see is how these differing society's now approach the infantry soldier? would the Nazi's be willing to try genetic modification and super soldiers? would the British/americans? would the Russians use brain washing and so on. its up to you! *cue dramatic music*
so i guess what i am really asking for after reading that brief design me a either a space Nazi foot soldier, a soviet foot soldier or an allied foot soldier. I'm not looking for a 20 year evolution of bucket helmets, K98 rifles, Thompson machine guns, M1 rifles, but an approach to infantry from either side that deals with the way the 3 society's would approach warfare if they had a sudden leap in technology.
i'd love to see this one come to life as a full blown game, but thats probably never going to happen..

I'd like to direct everyone's attention for a moment to this very first post in this thread: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=628566&postcount=1
Please read carefully. The CHOW, while strong, has sort of gone adrift from its original course in terms of character descriptions.
Cheers!

I was just about to post something about this when I saw this post. What happened to the CH in CHOW? Back in the day it was real characters with stories. Now it's almost like a humanoid COW. A HCOW, if you will. hey aren't characters anymore, they're just creatures. The CHOW needs to get it's story and persona element back!

she keeps a short dagger close to her heart, as a very personal object.

Something epic might already be lined up, but for CHOW 100 I say we should do the Hecatonchires (or one of the three, Cottus, Briareus or Gyes). The hundred handed one man monster armies!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hecatonchires
Or why not do a 10 character challenge? It's more work but there are some things you get out of designing a group of characters that you may not when doing individuals. Different considerations when it comes to contrast and relation to each other.
That is all.

This is a description taken from the back of the book Birds Of Prey (a lame book, but a great concept):
Setting:
Rome, 262 A.D.
It had been the capital of the greatest civilization on Earth. Now both city and civilization are dying. Germans flood across the borders from Britain to the Bosphorus, leaving a trail of rape, carnage, and ashes. In the cities, mods riot; in the countryside, cults seek salvation in dark rituals. Imperial unity has shattered into a mosaic of separatists and usurpers. squabbling among themselves as greater enemies gather to swallow them all.
Character:
One man stands between humanity and the Long Night, matching hes savage determination against a hopeless future. He is Aulus Perennius, an Imperial secret agent as tough and ruthless as the age in which he lives. Until now, his enemies have all been human... Roman courage against alien ferocity in a battle of the ages!!
Cheers!

Dream Herder - what form do these dreams take, and what does he who amasses them look like?

Jack Frost - more of a winter time subject - or maybe something to draw on a hot day...

The Palace Guards - what do they look like? Where is this palace? Just what is inside it that they're guarding?
Search and Rescue Hobgoblin - searching and rescuing who/what/where? What does his gear and equipment look like?
And a bunch of random nouns I wrote down one afternoon, which are a bit evocative, but nebulous...

Fantasy Female Warrior Anti-Sterotype: art of the fantasy genre is full of women warriors. they're always wearing next to nothing, big breasted, thin waisted, and have perfect supermodel hair. They look like you just tossed a sword to a "victoria's secret" model. I'd like to see some realistic warrior women. Character should be wearing appropraite armor for her setting, and/or have a realistic, less than ideal, or even unattractive figure.

Future Human Evolution:
The idea is that when mankind finally begins to collonise alien worlds the human race as a cohesive species will end. Genetic manipulation of the basic human form to allow the settlers to better suit their new worlds will change them beyond recognition. Humans from High gravity worlds will become squat and super muscular while humans from frozen ice worlds will grow fur. Think of the possibilities for biological weapons like poison glands and the ability to change skin colour at will. Hell throw in some extra limbs, wings or eyes.
The possibilities are basically endless as to how the human race will divide into billions of sub species.
The topic would require you to explain the biology internal and external of the new ' human ' sub species

Sorcerer of Burden
A rare few men have the power of magic. In the world they live in they are a disgrace; freaks to the eyes of the other men and women living around them. Most people fear them for their "dark sorcery" and there fore they are often murdered or locked in prison cells. Many sorcerers of burden grow infuriated of this behavior towards them and gather in secret planing the revolt on the others. Non-magical deaths are normally seen as accidents but they are but previews of what is to come...

http://www.ffcrystals.limited-chaos.com/FF8/GuardianForce/_gf_shiva.gifhttp://www.ffcrystals.limited-chaos.com/FF8/GuardianForce/_gf_diablos.gifhttp://www.ffcrystals.limited-chaos.com/FF8/GuardianForce/_gf_ifrit.gifhttp://www.ffcrystals.limited-chaos.com/FF8/GuardianForce/_gf_siren.gif
Let's say you're up to the task of designing one summon for the next Final Fantasy game (XIII?).... So either design a pre-existing summon (like Shiva, Ifrit, Siren, Ramuh, Diablos, Odin, Titan--gotta be the more human summons and not like Alexander, Carbuncle, Doomtrain, Leviathan, or Bahamut) or make a new one up with a specific element attribute (like fire, water, ice, thunder, gravity, etc)... There's enough chance for sexy vixens or deranged demon designs...

I received inspiration from a game called Shadow of the Colossus, A man named Wander has received a promise of his love being brought back to life by some unknown entity fight 18 colossal giants, so with his trusty horse named Argo, his stolen ancient sword, and his bow and arrow he has to climb them, mind you they vary in size but are still huge, and stab them in the head many times.
so to my point, A confused young man with an average build, wielding and ancient sword, his bow and arrows, and having his trusty companion by his side (doesn't have to be a horse, your interpretation of what his companion would be) standing up to fight a giant to bring his beloved back from the dead.

I has an idea, my grandfather told me an ancient Nordic legend, in which a viking warrior faced the armies of the darkness, and basing me on that legend, I have invented a character.
His name is Mograine, the executioner. He was born in a hidden town between the mountains and you I train all their life to face the man that I murder their father, the necromancer `` Black Heart ´´. To the 26 year-old age, Mograine left its town to look for its enemy and to take vengeance. But, to find it, he/she will face the creatures but terrible that the world governess seen.
Description: He is tall (2.10m), considered by many of a giant, he has black hair and a scar in the left eye.
It takes setting a silver armor. His weapons are an axe of war and an huge sword of 1,75m.

I worked for this non-profit organization called "The Long Now Foundation", and they have a very interesting project going on: they are trying to build a mechanical clock that will function accurately for 10,000 years. The clock would be an icon, a symbol of long time in opposition to our society's short time focus.
You can read about it here:
http://www.longnow.org/projects/clock/
The question that always fascinated me was whether the clock would have a human caretaker in its long life or not, and if this caretaker would be a scholar of sorts, or an ascetic, or a monk of sorts; someone who would be versed in the concept of "long time", the passing of ages removed from human terms.
Anyway, so that's my idea for CHOW: "The keeper of the clock", based on the Long Now Foundation 10,000 year clock, if it existed in the future.

I thought it was cool to have the next topic chosen by the previous winner of the polls. Interesting to have topics from different personalities. But having it back in the hands of power is cool as well, especially if it's more convenient and less work for the moderators.
I think it'll be interesting to have more ethnic type themes, just another change of pace idea. Maybe:

Updating Pippi Longstocking for modern times.
She's a girl of 10 years old.
She is a country girl who dresses modestly. She should be designed for wholesome family entertainment.
She must possess her trademark red hair, but am uncertain if she should still have the pigtails.

just made this up, but i got this image in my head....bleh
the gallant vagabond.
basically its a guy that's had it pretty rough, but always gets out of trouble with personal charm and a little bit of good luck. just when things are starting to look brighter for him, disaster hits, but he takes it with a cool attitude and a personal charm or smile that takes him far away from trouble, and onto the next disaster.
he's always acompanied by his one eyed pet friend (could be anything: a stray dog, parrot, cat, snail, go figure heh.) tuna.

Suppose we got into the holiday spirit with personified interpretations of the groups from the Twelve Days of Christmas?
Choose one!
This would include:
A partridge in a pear tree
Two turtle doves
Three french hens
Four calling birds
Five golden rings
Six geese-a-laying
Seven swans-a-swimming
Eight maids-a-milking
Nine ladies dancing
Ten lords-a-leaping
Eleven pipers piping
Twelve drummers drumming
Festive!

Quick idea I just had...
Boss Parasite
The specific story is totally up to the artist. The general scheme is that there is a dude/lady who lives totally off of a dormant higher power, yet still commands an army.
The source of power must be somewhere in the drawing, whether it's a big creature, a device, whatever...

1- Trelx'Lorith'Nier is a dragon piestess of an order of a dying religion, (she is the last one actually) and as she looks at the sacred meal of virgin flesh squirming and screaming, tied to the crude symbol designed to reflect her magnificent rack (horns), she begins to ponder the sanctity of a religion that makes lesser, more fragile beings hate and fear her. Sitting in her home, pondering her offering, enlightenment begins with the one and only, most ranked and most devout of her order.
2- On a plane less substancial than vapor, a two-headed god sits at a table moving the armies of an alien world against eachother in a game for land, riches, and souls. Both heads have been playing this game a very long time and are becoming slightly annoyed and bored with what would appear to be a stalemate between the civiliztions devoted to the old internal ways of mystique, and the nations that occupy themselves with the tangible and observable. Staring eachother in the eyes, the heads know eachothers' thoughts. Maybe its time to reset the board, change the rules ever so slightly, and start a new game from scratch. In a thousand and one years...who will know the difference; but the two headed god?
3. A loyal and dependable familiar to the King of the Atlantian throne, and the most powerful wizard of all known worlds, Metha is tired of her masters abuse and neglect. However grateful Metha is for her life, from clay and mud, to a form of aesthetic elegance she doubts her master's hand in her new found understanding of herself as an intelligent creature with rights, passions, feelings (especially anger right now), and dignity. Despite her small stature, Metha has a plan that involves a broken porcelain comb, her sleeping master, his orbital socket and his brain. It's a good thing her master doesn't know she has become self aware; but she has to be quick and precise. Nobody would suspect a harmless, weak, grovelling familiar; but maybe one of the concubines she overheard speaking treasonous slander against her much deserving master. What does she care if one of those filthy fish-women takes the blame? It's their comb afterall, it wouldn't be the first time someone "accidentally" got hurt by it.

Some ideas from the depths of my brain:
The Morrigan of today: The Morrigan is the shape changing Goddess of battle from Celtic mythology, shape changing from ravishing beauty to Hideous Hag, from Crow to BEAN-NIGHE (The Washer At The Ford.) The Morrigan uses fear itself as a weapon and she always picks the winning side. Lack of worshippers have diminished her now, but like many of the old gods she tries to keep to her duties, coming to aid those who call on her in their battles.
Son of the Lion: His father gained a reputation within underground circles, as a fierce but noble warrior, a true king of crime. Due to how much his father was admired and feared, his son has a lot to live up to if he is going to continue his families legacy. (Time period and culture of character left open to the artist.)
The diety of I.T. (Information Technology): Not the god of computers, nor the internet, the god of I.T. is the patron of the computer office technical department. The god of the people who tell you to turn your computer off and back on again if you have a problem. He is bored of idiots not plugging in their computers and then asking why it is not working. When the I.T. people ask for strength, this is the god that they pray to.
"Nobody told Mike that he was dead, so he turned up to work the next day as normal. Nobody really noticed the change." Mike was a man who had been dead inside for years, working at his job quietly, just getting on with things.
The Memory Man: Not only could he remember everything he had ever done, heard, smelt and seen, but he can remember your memories too. Is he haunted by your secrets, does he enjoy what he sees?
The Meddlesome Matchmaker: Everybody knows one of these. They cannot resist trying to fix people up together. They love making plans and carrying out little schemes all in the name of trying to make two people fall in love. Not all of their plans work and some even back fire, but that never seems to put them off from trying to do it again.
Dancer of the Fall: Before a great change occures, some say they see the dancer. Civilisations fall, new ones awaken. What compulsion draws them to herald these changes.
"You are what you eat" is certainly true for this character. What ever they have eaten within the last day manifests itself in their appearance in some way...Did you think that was an angel? No, they have just eaten chicken wings...
Ariel: The spirit named in Shakespeare's Tempest. Designing for a new film version that is going to be created of the play. The character is to be portrayed by a famous actor or actress (country of origin not stated) and needs to contain elements of the actor. It has not yet been decided whether the character is going to be developed in CGI or whether the actor is simply going to play the part. You can cast whoever you want in the role.
Just a couple of things to get my own brain going too.

Camilla, inspired by the song CAMARILLO BRILLO!!!
If you've heard the song "Camarillo Brillo" by Frank Zappa, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, Camarillo Brillo is about the quintessential "witchy woman." Listen to the song if you haven't, because it explains the character. Now, the song doesn't give the name of the woman, but we'll just call her Camilla. Basically, Camilla is a woman who is very into the occult. She's a biggish lady, with long dark hair. She's very spiritual and sometimes a bit pretentious. She wears a poncho and an amulet, and has a pet snake. Here are the lyrics to the song:
She had that
Camarillo brillo
Flamin out along her head,
I mean her mendocino bean-o
By where some bugs had made it red
She ruled the toads
Of the short forest
And every newt in idaho
And every cricket who had chorused
By the bush in buffalo
She said she was
A magic mama
And she could throw a mean tarot
And carried on without a comma
That she was someone I should know
She had a snake for a pet
And an amulet
And she was breeding a dwarf
But she wasnt done yet
She had gray-green skin
A doll with a pin
I told her she was awright
But I couldnt come in
(I couldnt come in right then...)
And so she wandered
Trough the door-way
Just like a shadow from the tomb
She said her stereo was four-way
An Id just love it in her room
Well, I was born
To have adventure
So I just followed up the steps
Right past her fuming incense stencher
To where she hung her castanets
She stripped away
Her ranchid poncho
An laid out naked by the door
We did it till we were un-concho
An it was useless any more
(is that a real poncho...i mean
Is that a mexican poncho
Or is that a sears poncho?
Hmmm...no foolin ...)

I just read some dragon book, which was somewhat entertaining and I found something really cool. So here is my characer idea. Dragons were said to choose favorites out of their sevrents, usually beautiful maidens, and adourn them with treasures and jewels in return for being with them (petting them, sleeping with them ect.). My idea is to draw this beautiful "favorite" with or without her dragon master.
