I live in Sacramento, California. I was planning on going to Laguna College of Art and Design and major in illustration, but everyone is asking me why I'm not going to San Francisco for art school.
I already have a decent job waiting for me when/if I move, it's an affordable and nice school with good programs, and I already have someone that I can move in with. And they have an amazing art scene with a few artist villages that I've visited already.
I guess I don't want to go to San Francisco because it would be more expensive and I would be alone. I'm not even sure if I would be able to do it.
But does anyone know of a significant difference between the two that isn't obvious?
Is San Francisco "better" for an art major?

Laguna College of Art and Design is an Atelier, but they seem to be based on the Vilppu type figure drawing training: http://www.vilppustudio.com/
not of the Reilly method: http://www.dhfa.net/Artiststatement.html
That's from what I can gleam from it. I could be wrong.
The only reason why I accuse Laguna of having Vilppu influence is because many of the faculity come from the animation industry, and the animation industry is steeped in Vilppu teaching.
I'm not certain if San Francisco is better or not?
Laguana College boasts about having alumni go to Pixar....so I don't know.

You don't need to justify your move to anyone other than yourself. From the sounds of it, you've already given some darn good reasons to go there as opposed to San Francisco.
If San Francisco is that great (and it does have many perks), then why isn't everyone going there? Don't get me wrong... for some people San Fran is the place for them. For some, the east coast is ideal and then others, the midwest or overseas is ideal but when it comes right down to it, it's a personal choice. It's your life to lead.
Now as far as the educational aspects of it, you might be able to compare curriculums and such but even with that, you've still got to find what works for you. Not every school or city is perfect for every person. As long as you go into the decision making process relatively open minded and honestly, I think you're more than capable of making sound & rational choices for your education and life.
It's nice to know you do have options.
And ultimately if you go to Laguna and find out it's not you, San Francisco is still going to be there (earthquake jokes aside please).
