View Full Version : Getting "blue" from a limited palette

I am reading alla prima (worth every penny for those who are considering getting it) and also going on Jason's suggestion I am going to be working with a limited palette...My favorite painters are Sargent and Velasquez and they both used this palette so why not hehe. There is a mixing exercise that I am going to start tonight to learn all the colors...here is the palette.

indian red
burnt sienna
yellow ochre
ivory black
titanium white

Just out of curiousity...is it possible to get a rich blue from this limited palette or does one have to buy it?

mcm, there is no blue in the palette so you will need to get one.

Cool thanks jon I appreciate it. What are your thoughts on this palette (with blue added that is)...good to go with? I know your original suggestion was a bit different.

sounds good to me, but perhaps for now you should keep the blue out of the equation. just paint earth tone colors.

Sounds good I will stick to the earth tones. You are right...no need to complicate things further. Thanks man.

I might be wrong about that jrr I thought I remembered Jason saying that but I might be remembering wrong. I haven't started painting yet but I just wanted to get my ducks in a row before I did. I have messed around in oils but nothing serious...the whole process seems overwhelming at this point so the more I can nail down the better. I just wanted a simple palette to work from and Jason has suggested that I use this one.

These are (basically) all the colors you'll get when mixing two of them plus white.

Cool thanks jester...I actually saved the thread on my harddrive where you showed this before. Belongs here as well though! Hey so have you done any painting with that palette yet?

Nope, being terribly busy getting my business to run (marketing, finding customers, satisfying first customers...) - so I haven't done much in arts for the past three weeks or so. However, I'm still determined to improve and there'll be quieter times for sure.

Hey MCM, I've been looking for that color chart for a while now. Even though I'm going to be on spring break next week, I want to try stuff out. So if you can direct me towards that post I'd appreciate it. Thanks man!

BTW: Have you checked out this post?

this is a must save! (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4929)

If you go to the sijun forums and then go to search...and then under the section where you search for the author put in "Jason Manley" the color theory thread will come up...check it out...4 pages of good stuff.
