Here's a new piece I'm working on. One pic is with the sketch, the other without.

So far I like how the character is coming along, but I'm not quite sure if I like how his surroundings are. Any thoughts?

i think id try to give him one of thise big oval african shields with some cool designs something like this (http://www.ainamoja.com/catalog/weapons/ok500.jpg) , or this (http://www.spyglassgifts.com/images/0072s.jpg) and maybe tribal looking tatoos or something?

maybe you could expand the pic horizontally adn lower the horizon to make it seem more like a huge desert? i dunno, when i think of the desert i think big and flat

Bizarre as it may seem, I like the pic with the sketch better. I just gravitate to that style though. Nice piece!

Right now the background is fighting with your main character too much. It has the same size and weight and it's kind of an awkward shape. The other suggestions were very good, I would consider them. Think about what is happening, is this character part of a large raid, a small ninja-like group. Think of a story and try to tell it. Use lighting and color to help tell that story.
