in response to another thread, I'm going to be posting some step by step for a painting I just started last night. Hopefully this will help keep me on task with it so I don't get too sidetracked...
anyhow, the pallet I'm using:

and the initial drawing. oil on linen, 25x40:

not a fantasy piece, but you'll take what I give you and like it

Yay process shots! I have never painted on linen before, is it similar to canvas?
Your pallete is very organized, that's a habit I need to get into.

I don't know how it happened, but somehow I gradually lost touch with the earthtones...
linen's basically the same at canvas, but it has (in my opinion) a finer and more interesting texture and looks better if you work with thin washes. more organic? I don't know. Anyhow, the color wash block-in:

Nice! I'll be following this thread closely. I almost always do my initial sketches in burnt umber. looks pretty cool though. I'm interested to see where it goes.

I would love to see a close-up of the girl's face (like brush-stroke level close-up). Seeing the process on this is great.

You are obviously some sort of art demon sent here to torment and mock me.
Great stuff. Good painters always astound me because try as you might you can't control-Z on a canvas.
I also too would like to see a close up on the girls face.

Thanks for all the comments. I've been getting to this painting in a pretty irregular manner. Just about done though, the left side is going to go pretty fast. Also, a detail of the face as requested, though there's really not much to see since it's only like 4 inches tall to begin with:

I think it may be finished... not sure, I'll look at it again in a few days and see if I see anything. Probably just some little tweaking from here on out.

great job!
i didnt "get" the shadows of the leaves until the last pic...
well depicted.
my only crit would be the unnatural pose of the guy in the BG.
i dont like his expression, and im having a difficult time figuring out his foot.
btw, your new avatar is excellent.

yeah, the center figure I'm guessing you mean. I worked some more into that, mostly clearing up the overly shadowed areas (face and legs) and some minor drawing corrections. I don't have to mention the annoying glare, once the thing's fully dry I'll finally be able to take a decent photo. anyhow...
