Hi everyone! This is my first time posting here at Conceptart, and having thought through this, I think this is the right place for me to start. Please redirect me if I got it all wrong... :S
I have a few sketches I thought I'd post, there will hopefully be more later. ;)
Starting with an 'old' piece; from March this year. Manga inspired.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a318/JaneM/littlemask.jpg
Following up with a coloured sketch, pencil and watercolours. Made this summer, I think it was in July. It's a quick concept for a medieval story I write, this is the owner of the Inn: 'The Silver Mantle'.

This one, it's supposed to be a young girl... I should also study women's anatomy more. I'm not very good at it yet. Hope you people have a few tips to give me on that... :\

Actually those last two anatomy studies came out great. The girl could have longer neck unless this is view from above and some parts of the body are hidden.
Hope to see more studies.

Update again.
First off, some foot studies I did. Reference are taken from 'Anatomy for the artist', drawings. I know though, using your own foot is probably better. Either way, I learned from it, though I can see flaws on the feet.

Ok, time for some more.
Here's a quick experiment with acrylic colours, not much focus on the face itself. That's why it's so out of proportion.

Nice hand and feet Jane! The rendering and line work on them is good. One crit, on some of the sketches of characters, the eyes tend to be too big. It makes the faces seem a little flat. I see no problems other then that. Cheers!

Those two were made with Wacom and Painter Classic. The first one is supposed to be a balloon head. I wasn't very consequent with the lighting though... :(

The second was a quick practice with light and shadow, and the colour in it. The headcloth is way too small...

Inspired by Prince of Persia, the games, but it's not the prince.
I know about the stomach's anatomy, and the ribs, but it's so fun to draw... I must get better at drawing and studying how it looks in real life, not only the way it's fun to draw.

A simple little drawing of a character me and my firends developed over several years. His name is Zoariack, though we just call him Zoar. However, this character was put on ice 3-4 years ago, but he's still fun to draw from time to time.

Hmm, I should add this as well. It's a speedpaint, where I wanted to picture the story Jesus told about the son who was lost and found. However, I don't feel this simple speedpaint is worthy of telling that story, when I know I can do better. I post it, but I might do a more serious attempt later.
For a notice: The hair hangs over the son's cheek, but it really does look like that's the cheek's outlines... Making him look more of a monkey than a man... Oh well. :/

Some of the faces might have anatomical issues, like eyes that are not on line etc. But anyway, they were all of great practice to me, even if they were all drawn from imagination. Many of them were drawn with pen, (originally) blue. I'ts not everyday I use pen for my sketches, so it was fun.

More studies from live model. I worked mostly with the torso, so the rest looks a little unfinished. Also, I didn't get to work with the neck / chest's muscles and bones. We didn't have forever with this one, I think 20-30 minutes. I believe that arm is too small. :/

I used a few photos to see what the guns, the belts and the hat was supposed to look like. The rest is drawn from imagination. The theme in general was inspired by Stephen King's "The Gunslinger".

Really like your characters and that you do not only stiff faces

Is it just me, or is Zoar just Sephiroth with pointy ears?
Nice colored life drawings.
JaneM
March 27th, 2006, 07:49 AM
Pixeldragoon: lol No no, but he was way too much inspired by Sephiroth. Zoar was design and developed over many years, starting, perhaps, 7-8 years ago. The process stopped for about 3 years ago. He's an old character. As the years went by, my friends and I liked the idea of Sephiroth-bangs, so, well... :/ However, he is a totally different character.

Nice SB. I like how you loosened up in that quick sketch #62. I'd like to see some of that find it's way into your more finished stuff. Now, I saw how the character on the previous page was compared to Sephiroth... and I can't help but draw a rather obscure FF comparison with that last character in #63... he reminds me a lot of Blank from FF9... hehe
JaneM
May 18th, 2006, 03:53 AM
John T:
When we designed Zoariack, we didn't care if he was similar to Sephiroth. In many ways we, or at least I, wanted him to be, at least the face and the hair. We made him simply for fun, there were no plans to publish him at that time. My character designs nowadays, however, they are my attempts on making independent character designs. Yet, I am in a phaze where I try to develop my own creativity, and since I still have a long way to go, they will undoubtly get strongly influenced by my inspirational sources. I do not wish for this to happen, and I try every time to free myself from it. I know I advance a little more in the right direction for each time, and soon the designs might not be so similar to the ones I am inspired by.
So you are right, Blank was my inspiration. Over all, I drew inspiration from all the characters in FFIX, and I guess I didn't manage to free myself enough from them.
Thank you for your comment!

Jane, I hope you know I didn't mean any malice in pointing that out, I was just joking. Of course all of us draw inspiration from outside sources, that's how we learn, and the Final Fantasy games are excellent sources. Now, if your inspiration was the cover art from Mega Man 1, then I would have a problem...

Lol, no no! I just had to explain it, because I do feel I draw too much similarity from them. :)

Hey lots of new work Jane ! that croco warrior is Too good LOL lovely expressions, that centaur is also nice, but his face is looking like hes wearing a mask..dont know why..maybe because its bit bigger..or maybe because of the jaw line? dont know..you r the artist...find out yourself :P
and those pirates(?) man..why they are sooo tiny? btw that second one is looks like me...not much..a bit :P
Keep posting :yayca:

Shyamshriram: Thank you. Yeah, I get what you mean about the centaur's face. It could be caused by his daft boring facial expression...
The pirates are my attempt of drawing people in this 'tiny' style... Does it not work?
And about what you said of similarity here... Sandra said the first guy looked like you. The uncoloured one. :P lol

the owl is great, too. the eyes are really well done and have so much life in it. i also like the "feathery" (damn, is that a word?) look. i wouldn't say it needs more color, i think the "problem" is that the lightest spot is on the body far right. maybe just toning that down a little or placing it a bit more to the left would probably make the body feel more "round".
cheers!

Thank you Stine. :)
Yes, I see it now. I should fix that; move the highlight a bit more to the left. Man, I know these things... I should think more through it when I paint.

Not a pro? The only thing that would make me say that is that you dont show us your anathomy skills cuz everything you ve showed us so far is really perfect. Dont understimate yourself.

The anatomy drawing are incredible, the muscles, oh god so very good. But um... stear away from that anime, yeah I've seen a couple good ones but it's no help to you artisticly, and alway seems to come out rather distasteful. Cool stuff you got goin' here, though.

Nothing wrong with having some fun playing with the style you like while you're learning I reckon. But yeah, I reckon your anime stuff can benefit from more proportion/shape studies in general.
I would suggest trying to capture more details you can see with your studies than you are doing now. I think what you did with the African and the ballet woman in #90 are good examples of good levels of detail.

u've come a long way. you have some nice works and ones with potential, but your drawing and paintin don't seem to be very consistent. I mean there's ones that really good and ones that just bad (I thought to myself why r they so different?). overall, you got some great stuffs here.
JaneM
March 25th, 2007, 03:13 PM
Shyam: Thanks mate. :) Yeah, his leg muscles are really loose and thin, I know. But once again, I fell for the temptation of drawing bad/wrong because the shapes are fun to draw *sigh*. Oh, and I forgot to write the month's name in English. It's in Norwegian.
d00dle: They are different because I spend more time on some than on others. I still think the so called bad ones posted have some worth to them, at least enough to show. I want to show ALL of my progress, not only the good parts of it. Besides, sometimes I have reference to help me with getting the anatomy right, while other times I have to improvise. Sometimes I focus more on learning a technique than on getting pose and anatomy right, like with the two 'learning new techniques' that I posted just now. But if you could tell me which ones you think are not so good, it can be of good help to me. I always look around to improve! ;)

Oh, you mean spend more time on technically drawing them. I thought you meant spend more time to plan and develop them. Oh updates !
I like the way you've given attitude to the guy with big ears in post #160
the next creature looks dumb and cute at the same time..nice attempt in giving him human hand and legs :P
the lady in post #161..well..her fingers looks really nice..just that left arm looks too straight/stiff to me
maybe u could make the hip area more wider.
that cow needs more attention..especially those legs..that dog looks happy and sweet :D
Hope i didnt post too many crits :bashful:
Keep up the good work !
p.s. hope u r working on that new technique of urs ;)

Next, two drawing with black pen.
Uncoloured character design for Zoariack, leadpen and black pen on paper, retouching in Painter IX:

This was merely a practice to draw with pen, so I didn't focus much on the anatomy. That's why the hands are so dull.

A character for my medieval story. I know there are more bags under one one eye than the other, and that his ears are shown too much from the front. But this was mainly a practice in the painting technique.

some nice stuff in here, i notice that the heads are quite elongated in the purely digital speed paints, (maybe this is a stylistic choice, and if so please ignore me)
this could be due to an incorrect monitor setting, i know because the same thing happened to me. to double check you should create a new canvas of square dimensions, and physically measure it on your monitor with a ruler. Mine was out by quite a bit, and now I've fixed it everything that i didn't start first on paper looks very elongated.
Now i have another problem as my young daughter has pulled a magnet around my monitor creating wierd patches of colour, but that's another story...

Monkeydominator: Ah, another Norwegian! Godt å se flere nordmenn her. :) Takk for at du stakk innom!
Ditchman: Is that so? Thank you for pointing that out! I will see to it so that it betters with my next drawings. Haha, magnetic effects... :P

WOW !! so many updates...didn't check ur sketchbook since long time Jane !!
ur portrait is sweet..only one thing i can say is..try to control the light on the face..looks bit flat to me..how about adding more tones on the lit area?

Shyamshriram:Honestly, I have barely updated this sketchbook at all lately. Anyway, thanks for your comment! About the picture, I am aware that there are no tones. I went straight after the picture, which was way too overexposed. :P But yeah, it looks flat. I could have imprivesed and added tones, which might have made it look better.
