So, I had this huge elaborate speech planned out when I was planning this revamp but, now Im tired.. I just spent over 20 hours in the last five days rescanning everything you see here and clipping all this art onto these pages... I wanted everyone who came to my sketchbook to get the full scope of my artwork in the last year and a half that I have been a member here...

I started out as a person that just wanted to draw.. I thought that by just drawing I could get better. Boy was I wrong.. Conceptart taught me that I need to work so hard in order to make my goals happen. Reading the posts, reading the stories, looking at the art and even making a few buddies along the way.. I feel as if I came a long ways from when I started... I love to do life drawings now.. I sketch people on the train daily... I take my time, think, plan, create thumbs, roughs, comps for all larger pieces...

So, in saying that I want to say thank you all who have supported me, given me crits, praises, arguements, and many smiles...

So, here is my artistic evolution... My first sketchbook starts off in 7/04... less then a year and half ago...

BTW- I tried to put these in chronological order as best I could...

Hey, vicostar, Very powerful sketchbook. A lot of interesting ideas and very good performance. Well, that's some characters riding with your in a train daily :). You are probably sketching with one hand and striking back with the other :).
Rendering is very impressive. A lot of great drawings. I especially like the one from your avatar, this one http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v402/vigostar/graffwarzresized.jpg ( took it)
and http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v402/vigostar/againstallodds.jpg (took it too)

Very cool stuff. Love the cartoony way you draw, but maybe you should
focus on the anatomy a bit more.

Great studies, and nice shading, really nice revamp Vigo!.

You have a few images in there that completely stand out from the rest, Some line drawn anatomy or gesture studies are really well done.

The Buonarroti study is great, although a little small.
Keep it up, and keep progressing.

Loomer- thanks a bunch man... lots of work... and I know that I need to work more then what I am... trying to inch my way there.. where im drawing at least 5 hours per day.. im doing and average of three right now... Thanks for your support dude...! it helps alot!!

Clogik- yeah dude.. this project took a long time... i was getting very antsy scanning all this stuff in... it was very tedious.. if you dont have patience I wouldnt suggest it.. but, the good thing is that I learned two short keys in Photoshop cuz of it.. ctrl L & ctrl T!!!! they were life savers!!!

Bumskee- thanks man.... I am really satisfied with the way the character came out... it was a little different from my usual stuff... im trying to generate different styles to have a nice rounded look in my portfolio... Im glad you think I'm improving.. just trying to keep up with you!!!!

SVE- yeah, lots of sketching on the train.. its becoming an art form for me... trying not to let people see that im sketching them becuz they get uncomfortable..!! sometimes i dont care.. i just look straight at them and im like "WHAT"!?~!! Its interesting when your drawing to just draw and when you start to draw becuz you want to learn and get better... You start to get alot better at drawing when you start to learn.. Go figure!!!!? and no problem with the saves.. interesting how everyone likes color!!! one piece you took was supposed to be a rendition of myself fighting my artistic demons!!! Thanks again..

Placeboast- yeah man anatomy is key.. but, figure drawing is more key when you start to learn.. i think you learn so much more drawing from life then you do from a book... Stop by again.. thanks for the crit..

Emooe- Thanks man... I work on drawings for many reasons.. Sometimes I want to work on speed, sometimes its for the linework, sometimes for the rendering and sometimes but very few times I want the whole package and I think those are the ones that stand out the most... glad you like the sketches and stuff.. Buonarroti im assuming is the sketch above my duke nukem looking character.. yeah.. I drew that from a book that has work from the masters.. great book... teaches alot of good stuff.. planes, mass, proportions, perspective all that good stuff... thanks for stopping by..

Hey man.

It's swell to see your progress. You're going places!
As far as improvement goes: I think you'd benefit a lot from spending some time on structure and anatomy. Studying and practicing perspective stuff would also be good, I reckon. You're quite good at rendering, and 'finishing' your drawings, but, to me, it seems that your lines aren't as confident (and fast?) as they could be.

Fellah.
October 7th, 2005, 11:20 AM
Hi dude - first: very cool to organize your new sb like, second: i love your brain  Packed with weird creatures and strange designs - great. Crit wise: your rendering is beautiful (as you know hehe) and your time spend on it is a good investment - only thing i would like to see is more strong highlights mixed into the dark (the dark rendering you got down solid!) Theres a strong progress in your anatomy and when you get all this to work together (rendering, design and anatomy) you will be unstoppable. Keep working hard (you are) and keep updating. Rock on :confident

RA Havok- hey man.. thanks for stopping by.. I really admired your work and was hoping to hear some thoughts... You are absolutely right about the structre and anatomy.. I know its something I need to work on and have.. but, not nearly as much as I should.. i know... Im super motivated now.. never have I been so motivated.. When I got back into art shortly before I started the first sketch you see here and shortly before I discovered CA I had a plan.. I told myself that I was going to tackle one thing at a time.. and take baby steps... stop being so hardheaded and listen to what people have to say.. take their crits and apply them.. i feel like I have accomplish my first couple of goals... Now, Im starting to move onto my current goals which are form, movement, structure and anatomy... These I believe are all inclusive to one goal... Im going to crawl my way there but, im going to get there.. especially with people like yourself guiding me along!! thanks a bunch

Fellah- thanks man.. I have been trying hard to implement that stronger highlight that you mentioned on another post you left me... I really tried to do that one the upper left hand corner of the One Armed Robot... where his backpack thingy is... I was really trying to create some dynamic lighting and for the first time try to implement drop shadows properly to give more sense of depth... Im def. going to work harder on that stronger highlight thing... Im still figuring out a style but, when I start to render I always keep Rembrandt in mind.. i'm a huge fan of the way he handles contrast.. Im a huge contrast fan.. Thanks again fellah.. really appreciate your thoughts...

Keep the spirit high, keep motivated, keep practicing anatomy and all relative. You're doing great.

Panda- hey man thanks.. I need to work on alot of everything!!!! im assuming that you were directly talking about the girl blowing the smoke.. that started of as a quick portrait sketch of my girl but, then she moved and I just kep elaborating on it... So, I cam def. see the faults in the neck and bicep area along with the shoulder being out of position, the head being too big and a sleu of others.. thanks for stopping by..

Diego- dude thanks a mill.. glad you like the train stuff... its become a habit on my rides home... i get alot of the same people so, i try and catch different people... when im sketching them i always tell myself that im going to make a collection of train sketches called "asleep in NYC". Being that most of my sketches are of people napping!!! thanks for coming by..

October 7th, 2005, 05:25 PM
wow your shading is amazing. you have a hell of alot of patience. what do you use to shade a ball point pen.

I do think you need to work on your porportions your pretty advance so what i think is going on is you really into a certain spot and end up over rendering it before you youre even finished. try to always check your porportions as your drawing.(I have the same problem sometimes.)

so what part of newyork your from and what school you went too?

vigostar
October 8th, 2005, 02:39 PM
Bonedog- Thanks dude.. I really appreciate that... Ive been working hard (although I know I need to work harder) I think things are just starting to fall together.. thanks for stopping by.. hope to see you around here again...

Camilo- thanks dude... Ive always been a "shader" or what I call a "render" ever since highschool.. I grew a fcination with HR giger backthen and started to do lots of alien type characters which were very "black" heavy which ultimately led to my style now... I think my problem now is really learning how to capture ligthing in actual form as opposed to a fantastical form that is used to just make a drawing more interesting... I use a regular ballpoint pen... actually, I started to use a Pilot EsayTouch pen then I discovered the bic Velocity pen.. I switched over because I found that the Piolt pen ended up blotching up waaaay to much and started to make a mess out of some of my drawings.. then someone passed m a velocity pen and ive been drawing with it ever since... I dont get the "blackness" of the piolt pen but, I dont get the blotching therefore the drawing are cleaner.. I try to use different pens when i see them to try and find the best ones.. sometimes I use a type of pen because of the intensity of the "blackness", I notice that sometimes a pen has more of a grey color and therefore use that pen where needed.... the proportions is somethig I def. need to work on and im going to chip away slowly but, surely.. thanks for stopping by..

BTW- I really didnt go to art college.. i went to FIT but, for advertising and communications.. I went to Art and Design high School... which really didnt teach me too much..! I just ended up making life long friends.. which was great!

Hi Vigostar. Sorry I haven't posted here sooner. I only just realized you finished reorganizing it. I have been practising for my driving theory test over the past week(which I just passed today dispite trains being cancelled and other problems) so I havent been on here as much.
Anyway, I really like the way you have reorganized your work. It's starting to look very professional now, particuarily your most recent stuff.

If you continue this sketchbook in the way you have started it will be amazing. Good work.

Great gettin' to sketch with you some this weekend...yeah...you may have missed the collab shit at Silver Spurs at the end of the night, but you didn't miss anything! We were so tired just drawing stupid shit. We should have had more coffee.

- I was taking a look at your drawings from time to time Sunday...seeing what you were doing. There's no doubt that you have talent within you, and it's a matter of technical application and a visual vocabulary that needs the most attention right now. But that's not news...everyone is telling you that.
What I do feel is important is that you try a different medium than pen right now. I know you love it, and I think that's important to really love the medium you preferably work in...but I think this is a perfect point in your growth to experiment. Alot.
I was talking to Arkady about you after you left (not bad of course!) - and we were discussing this very topic. Pen is all about precision and it usually takes artists years of experience before they can work comfortably in pen without any preliminary work. I think you should try a medium that you can abuse...erase, scratch, rub out...whatever. If pencils aren't your thing...perhaps watercolor...I'm not sure. It could be a combination of some mixed media.
I dunno man..these are just some thoughts I had - stuff that I thought would speed along your progression. It's just my opinion of course...so you gotta go with what feels right to you. That's always gonna be the right path. When in doubt - trust your instincts. Unless you have really crappy instincts ;)
you're gonna be rockin' these forums one day with some sick ass work...it's just a matter of how ya get there. Cheers bro

You have really made a ton of progress over a short period, congrats. Your heavily shaded stuff is so visually intense I almost have to look away! Seriously, you must have carpal-tunnel by now.

I think your mech-stuff would really benefit with a bit more planning ahead, but I think you are already implementing this, so keep at it. I also agree with loomer that more experimentation with media would really be good for you. You don't have to love, just try it. See you next time.

Loomer- yeah.. dude.. i def. hear what your saying.. I think for this next character Im going to do Im going to work on it in pencil... I just have to learn how to keep my fustrations of the pencl and things that I dont like at bay... but, im going to do it... there are only two things in my SB that i didnt use pen for.. one is my avatar which i did in High School the nest is the counter terrorist which I basically copied from a foto.... but, experimentation will come... it will.. im going to get sme watercolors.. My friend told me to use watercolors for the longest in cojunction with my penwork.... Its gonna happen.. baby steps...

CBalaskas- thanks man.... Im a detail feak I guess.. one of my biggest inspirations is HR giger... which is technically super dteailed work... but, im learning how to simplify what needs to be simplified.... thats a very hard thing to do.. to train yourself into thinking that something doesn't need to be rendered or needs less rendering... how to plan out the drawings has been a major downfall which i hope to start improving on soon...

shyamshriam- thanks for the compliment and for stoppng by..

well, its been a bit since my last post... yesterday i did ZERO artwork.. thats right ZERO.. i had no desire for it.. i felt like crap... in any event.. in order to redeem myself a bit I decided that I wanted to finish a character today.. actually start and finish a character... This is frm my sketch trade.. this is my rendition of Clogik's character... i've been trying to do different styles and such and really trying to incorporate different ideas into my characters... anyways. enough talking here he is..

hey Vigo, that really is a very different approach to Clogiks character, for one thing it's not mechanical. :P it's a fun concept! :) I think gorillaz leg is a little weird, it's not holding, not quite sure what to make of it. nice pose on the old man, and I see you have gone back to your faithful ball point pen. :) nice rendering as always.. cheers dude!

Bums- thanks dude... umm, I actually used ref for the monkey.. so the pose is pretty acurate whats not on pont is the direction of the hair. but, i see what your saying about the legs.. they look like they cant hold it up but, i realized from different ref's i saw that monkeys have a very awkward walk... anyways.. thanks a mill dude... you know i always love your crits!!

art addict- thanks man... ummm... i went through the process of testing out a ton of pens... i started to use a pen that has a great "true" black ink (pilot easy tough) but, it would blotch up on me and I wouldmake a mess. you can see that in alot of my early works... but, now I use a Velocity pen that i believe papermate makes.. its the best i've used so far.. easy to control and no blotching... thanks for stopping by..

Hey Vigostar. Thanks for your comments in my sketchbook--sorru it took so long to get back to you; I was away from my connection last week.

You have a lot of really nice work here. I like the way you render things through to the end, it really makes for an attractive page. I'm especially impressed with the way you make convincing renderings of invented forms--I guess a lot of the hardware and the e=mc2 creature are good examples of that. I wonder if you have an idea of what these things will look like ahead of time, or if you mostly discover it while drawing?

Anyway, I've enjoyed looking at your work. I'll be sure to check back in.

so it was about time for me to update my sketchbook... unfortunately I dont have anything thrilling to show... The first are a bunch of figure drawing stuff from Tuesday's Jazz Session and some quick sketches of some of the people there... the second are all anatomy.. Im going to the basics... I have never really truely studied anatomy and the way the human body operates so Im starting now.. I picked up four Bridgeman books which are awesome.. I ended up doing four pages worth today.. Hope you guys like... I have some more stuff to post tomorrow.. Im tired of scanning for now... Thanks for stopping by.. your crits and comments are most welcomed..

wow wow wow.. some brilliant studies Rob, I am very pleased and impressed by your execution. Life drawings are looking great! good to see you going for those pencils. I am really loving this update. cheers!

Are those hand studies all from the Bridgeman book? Fingers look consistently a bit stubby...just wondering if that was all your doing...

Otherwise, excellent rendering as usual. But some of the wrists seem a little weird. I've noticed some books have pictures of these disembodied hands that look great on their own, but give you no clue how to connect them to the arm. So I guess what I'm saying is, pay more attention to that area, draw all the way up to the elbow to make sure you're getting it.

I'm saying this as someone who struggles a lot with hands...and on the whole your studies here look very good.

Panda- yeah man Bridgeman is pretty good stuff.. I like it because he doesn't show all the muscles which i think is important to successfull drawing cuz most people arent professional body builders that have all their muscles felxing all the time... i think its up to the artist to express which one need definition.... thanks for stopping by..

Bums- thanks man.. Bridgeman was alot of fun to do... although he doesnt add alot of shading... I just try and imagine what it would look like if he had..

Diego- yes, those sessions are pretty dope and this week I was sitting next to a kick ass charcol artist.. it was amazing to see how he brought things to life..!

Loomer- thanks, I try to make you happy!

Max- yeah,. I noticed that also... but, all the hands studies are from Bridgemans Hand book so there arent any forarms just hands... but, thanks for the crits, im going to make note!!

Infini- thanks, I had a rough time with doing the life drawings this week.. im glad I had one decent drawing come out from it...

Nice Chow. Her feet look weird though, they're confusing me, like they've been drawn in seperate perspective schemes. I'm seeing one from above and one from the side, but they're on the same ground, right? Cool shoes though. Might wanna lighten up her upper lip, looks a little like she's got a moustache.

Hey! I really like those hand studies you did. Your rendering style is interesting. It seems to me that you are really concentrating on one small area at a time, without really thinking of the piece as a whole as you work. May I suggest that you let your eye and your pencil wander as you work on rendering? Think of a single light source as you work, or perhaps a dual light source, with some reflected light. Try to work in Layers, building to the darkest values, and saving the darkest darks for what really matters and what you intend to be focused upon. I hope I made sense and I hope that this helps

mr.Blonde- Yeah your def. right.. actually when i render with pen its a slow painfull building process.. i have this love hate relationship with it!!! as far as the light source thing.. usually and I know this is a bad thing is that I dont always keep a light source in mind... when im doing a serious drawing I stick to it.. like in the one armed droid.. i kept it consistant.. but, i do agree with you 100% thanks for the words.. come by again..

Vigostar, thank you for posting close-ups here and in a sketch ling thread, but, unfortunately they are way too blurry. I need very sharp images to look at your rendering and see how lines follow the form. I understand the problem with space on your server. So if it's not too much trouble for you, could you send them to my e-mail, I'll give it to you if you can send them. In this case you photo bucket space will not suffer. So whistle me if you agree.

The proportions on the head look really good..That's crayon right?

good stuff

Bums- glad you like the life drawings... trying to keep in mind what you said amigo...!!! Im def. going to lighten it up some... sometimes I like to build a dark patch to get a nice under color going that seeps through the top layer...

Loomer- Waddup Scott..... yeah, man.. i dunno if Im too crazy about the bot but, im going to continue it anyways... i wanna post something for that forum... trying to get to weeklies going consistantly.. i dont think I could do more then that being that I have other stuff going... but, that is actually colored pencils.. close enough to crayon i guess... i started off with a sketch of my girlfriend with one of the pencils that you peel away (which I cant get the hang of btw) and then I wanted to see if my colored pencils would interact with that sort of pencil well... actually, I just wanted to get the graininess out, then started to add some funky colors, and before you know it.. **POOF** I have that drawing you see above!!! I have some work still to invest.... probably about 10 hours... like my pen work when I decide to color in colored pencils it takes forever... and it kills my hands....

Firstly i think that the face on #72, i feel that the ear is too small, i might be wrong but it looks to small to me. My favourite has to be the face on #63. That has great detail and plz plz finish it. It would look great if you do so.

I love that bot too, looks like he's about to fall. or having a hard time standing in his feets. Really cool, a lot of movement, and the shading, superb. My everlasting crit is the forms, like is the last batch of lifedrawings, really like your lines, but the proportions are a bit off, try slowing you pace, look more. Rob, I love your robot. He is a hoot. He looks ten years younger now and very energetic. Colors are very vivid, just how I imagined them in this drawing. He would be a great sidekick to the main character in some sci-fi movie. Because he has many individual features: easy going, maybe easy headed, with a dancing itch on the tips of his toes. Good peace loving buddy :). Loves beer and good company. Has a thing about Soviet Union. Maybe gay :).
I really like how you invented this design, it's fun to observe how he was built.

Panda, people usually sleep or reading something, and I doubt Vigo would draw anyone staring directly at him anyway. it's kinda intimidating when they are looking directly at you. :P

Vigo! awsome stuff, keep the train sketches going, your faces are coming along nicely. IDOW entry looks kewl! though I think you could have done better, the lower half sort of loses structure, I am still trying to figure out if there's one or two legs.. did you paint that in PS? or is it all traditional? Also I think it also lack overall lighting, it seems to be everywhere and maybe that is kiling the form.

Hey vigo, nice book! I like the studies and the imaginative stuff.

When you render, things like loomerskeletoncharacter.jpg and the ones at the beggining of page 1, you have a tendancy to render everything with the same consideration. This makes it difficult for the eye to settle in one place. Try to establish a sort of rendering hierarchy, put it all in the focus area, and the rest subordinate it to the focal area. For example the further away you get from the focus area, the more covered in shadows things could get. Also, don't put details everywhere, put them where they matter (focus area), and leave the rest more suggested or simple.

Anyway hope that helps for something. Really like this book. Keep posting.
Cheers.

Hello, Vigostar, I like your street sketches a lot, especially the ones, where you suddenly add colors, strike me. I really amazed with how you feel the colors, their combinations, their hues, very fresh, very unusual. Never saw anything like that here and outside the forum. Well, let's take this little girl bending her body. the colors make her so alive, so energetic, of course the pose itself is very dynamic, but the colors just grab my eyes. The same goes to every sketch you touched with colors. They are immediately starting to look very full of life. I like this drawing of the guy in fur coat. Great attitude and I love the texture of the fur, singer with curly hair is great too, and little running girl, and two women with black hair, and homeless guy. I really enjoy this New York City presentation.
Very vital.
Thanks
Sveta

Whoa, good job with depicting the skin textures.

The fine lines you use indicate that you put a good deal of thought into your sketches. The only problem I see is that your distinct outlines don't go too well with the realistic textures.

Wow, 2006 is finally here.. Time to get busy, bust my ass and finally start putting out some work that i can be proud of! So, im starting with something that Im not so proud of.. These first few images are from the Thunderdome topic-FEAR. I decided to do a montage of a sort and draw up peoples fears.. Clown, spider, rat, atomic explosion, drowning, the dark, snakes and being tied up.. I had some more in mind but i felt like I was way over my head already... well, i hope you enjoy...

Rob, I'm so amazed, far beyond my human capacities . I just want to hug you to death and steal from your pockets everything I didn't steal from the my first time hugging you one month ago . I feel great looking at your new update! What was you thinking posting them so small. They are gorgeous!!!! You told that you don't like them or something, but I see so much heart and soul from you in every page. Very, very talented work! And they do have a common theme, and I like the idea traveling with my eyes from one human fear to another and think in my mind: "Yes, it's scary, I don't want that to happen to me."
I have trouble to choose which one is better. I love them all, and that's not that ass patting, which makes me sick just to pronounce it, I'm really excited looking at what you did. You are so precise in choosing what and how to tell your thought to a viewer.
Tried to choose one that I like the best. All of them! I'm amazed how clear your message is in each of them and how they all connected somehow with each other with style you chose and with this manner to tell the story. Every image is like an uppercut in box. Short and powerful.
Well, I can't dissintegrate your drawings as I usually love to do. The impact from them is unified. So I can only say that i love them. and you stole my first impact by posting them small.
Love every collage too, very beautiful and enjoyable to observe, all these shades.
Unfinished scene of the rape is very expressive, like a scream, in style with every other piece.
Explosion is great and powerful, the illusion of to the sky arisen mushroom is huge.
Hand in convulsions searching to be saved is very, very scary and vivid.
Darkness, spider, rat, clown, I love it all and every piece is pure gold.
Hugs again and taking all the remaining stuff from your pockets.
Thanks, a lot
Sveta

Rob- I'm supposed to be sleeping but I MUST tell you how great this update is. It's great..g'dnight

Ok - first off if you just submitted the clown - that would be enough for me
It's great..one of your best..and it stands alone. The range of values is great...I love it. It's such a sicko idea which makes me believe you are letting go a bit and really delving deeper. how awesome is that ?!

Also, the spider... excellent. I am super impressed that you were able to distinguish clearly in your rendering the soft hairy parts vs. the hard exoskeleton parts. and in pen no less...bravo sir!

also..the unfinished rapeage....that's the best face you have done in my opinion. Could you improve any more in just one post? 2006 baby....2006
it's your year to stretch grow and discover the artist you wanna be. I'm psyched as hell to see it happen bro.

Cheers to you...

A lot of awesome pics in this update. The hand is my favorite by far...I might pick about the anatomy (ok I will--the index finger looks weird) but the energy, depth, and composition are outstanding.

The sketchier stuff isn't working as well...looks like you're intentionally exaggerating and distorting the faces, but it's not clear to what end, i.e., the charicature effect isn't quite being realized. Probably just need some more practice.

Wow, I have to say that Im pleasantly surprised at the compliments here. Makes me feel all warm a fuzzy inside.!!

Sve- You are too kind... You are like the keeper of hearts and when you see that someone needs that warmhearted kindness you open the gates and let the flood take its toll... Im just glad that me being intially late with this TD thing wasnt all in shame.... thanks again for the words..

Loomer- Your like my professor!!! I try to keep all the little tidbits you tell me about art in mind.. thats why I went freaking crazy with the wacom "experimenting" trying to come up with something where I could put all my drawings together but, I just couldnt pull it off... in any event... Whats up with this rape thing?? EWWWE!1 I didnt intend for it to be a rape thing and didnt even see it until you guys started mentioning it.... she was supposed to be tied up but, yeah I can totally see it now... I hope you guys dont think Im a weirdo... Oh, and the face probably came out well cuz I used Ref. I used ref for everything just about... even the clown to a certain degree.... thanks for the words...

Max- thanks... I was worried about the hand actually... didnt know if it would read properly.. glad you like it... about the faces... yeah, i see what your saying... i guess it just an unconscience style that I have.. also, those are people on the train so im usually working pretty quick and not worrying about exactness rather then getting things down and trying to lay in some mass...

Yoshi- hey, I went to an art high school but thats about it... so, theres tall tales being told about my girl woman?? COOL!

Strych9ine- Thanks Cody. The clown was alot of fn to do. It was the only creative one i did really. The rest were done from ref. Although I like working from ref.. now-a-days..

Hey Vigo,
Really nice updates man! I thing the Old man's face is awesome!! and your nudes gestures are coming along really nicely, :)
When working with color try to simlify the amount of color you use, because then it just gets confused and muddles. Start with a burnt sienna(warm brown), or Raw umber(cool brown) and then incorporate your color, little by little. like for a week just use Burnt Umber or whatever, then the next week use like a blue for the shadows, and then next week use a warm color for the lights. Here is a basic rule for color:
Warm Light/cool shadows, and vice versa, cool light/warm shadows.
here is a pretty good book on color and painting:
'The Yin/Yang of Painting' by Hongnian Zhang and Lois Woolley
keep up the good work man! :)

poise- wow that was awesome thanks so much. I no nothing about color and color theory and I guess it shows huh... This is going to come in real handy when I start coloring things in now... but, one question.. how do i know, just by looking at the color which one is warm and which one is cool?? Thanks again...

so, Im going to submit my sketch and WIP for this weeks CHOW. Im having alot of fun with this one.. I feel like 2006 is going to treat me well... any event... I went about this drawing wanting to show off his charisma and "lady's man" side. Also, I wanted to add some humor to the drawing. I honestly didnt want to go so detailed and its not as detailed as some of my other works but, im moving failry quickly now.. hopefully have this wrapped p by tomorrow afternoon... As of right now I have about 4-5 hours invested. So, your crits and comments are most welcome... I think I may be running into some trouble with his right hand.. the one thats hasn't been worked on yet... i want it to be laying on his clubber... on top of his clubber actually... do you guys think this works?? anything else that I may be able to change... Keep in mind this is all pen, so whats there, is there!! Thanks for viewing..

hey man, love your work, don't take this the wrong way, but i think your main problem is with form, your values reads very well. I think you should pay more attention to the shapes, line quality and then round that up with the values.
The proportions in the last dude are a bit off, it looks like you did the linework really fast in order to do the rendering, which i think is you strongest skill.
I think it will help that you slow your pace as you're designing, and throwing lines, instead of giving all your concentration and focus to the rendering.
Hope this year will be great for you, and your skills
cheer dude, take care.

I'd like to see more studies on realistic facial structures however, the last guy imo could use a bit of a facial overhaul and doesn't stand up to the rest of the anatomy that you have there.

Diego- thanks for your comments... I have always kept the forms thing in mind since the last time you mentioned it but, i think im lost now.. what exactly do you see wrong? I know i distorted some things on purpose cuz i wanted to give this drawing a more cartoonish/ comical feel so certain parts like around the wrist are wonky. I know i see a def. prob. with the shoulder at this point which Im going to hopefuly fix. Maybe you can be more specific? thanks again.. look foward to seeing your entry later.

holy crap man...you must be burning through pens and paper. Good for you.
The last sketch is great..and I like the gasmask fella with 'vigostar' spelled out. I think it's great that you are so dedicated to drawing and that you are really motivated to do so.

I do think it would have been better to do 15 sketches, with half of them being anatomy studies or head studies, value studies..etc. Ya know..quality over quantity. It's good to flex both the creative muscles and the technical skill muscles ya know. It's a balance.

keep going ...you are improving man

Loomer- I def. hear what your saying... problem is that the bulk of this work takes place on the train and cant really do anatomy studies there... when i go home.. ive been dedicating that time to working digitally.. Now, Im actually working on two projects which will take me till the end of the month. then gonna hit the anatomy hard... Like I said.. most of these are junk but, there are one or two that I kinda like... so yeah... ahh.. the spoils of being an artist. thanks for stopping by.

fooxoo- hey, thanks... I work alot from life... but, I really dont enough studies of anything... thanks for stopping by.

Hello, Rob. I like this page http://www.filelodge.com/files/hdd6/138208/febone2-1-06.jpg it has a kind of weird sensation with all these faces, trying to climb on each other. And the expressions are strange to the most. Really make me wondering about them.

ttp://www.filelodge.com/files/hdd6/138208/bots2-1-06.jpg I like these thin legged creatures, again they somehow to make me feel weird.

http://www.filelodge.com/files/hdd6/138208/blackandwhitearmyguy2-1-06.jpg I like this, it's simplified, looks almost like a logotype, looks very crazy and destructive.
And I like the colored dancer a lot.
Also the sleeping head and funny heavy set guy.

You know exactly how to render out shapes, but the shapes are a bit unfinshed sometimes in the way of "it looks interesting". I would suggest work on your linework and try to be more loose. Play with the shapes and watch out for proportions. Put more effort into the design of the image and find more ways to make it look more interesting (e.g. line contrast). Than you can start your nice passionate rendering. I hope that helps and you will approach your artworks in a different way by facing your weak points.
Something like that was mentioned before, so i gonna mention it again! :)

Poise- thanks

Amish- umm yeah, I was actually trying to draw the room but, its alot harder then it seems.. and I wouldnt be flattered if I were you!

Skurreal- thanks for the words. I guess my main problem is really not truely understanding what people mean by certain things. for instance. If you were to take one of my drawings and maybe do digital correction or example of what your talking about then i feel as if I would be able to know what your talking about and make the future corrections. Im not saying you shoul, although it would be nice.. but, I hope you understand what I mean. Im a bit uneducated when it comes to art but, I really try to implement any and all things said about my artwork. Loomer said experiment and BAM!!!!! I started to experiment, some others said draw less lines and BAM!!! less lines, others said focus more on form and SHIT Im still struggling with that! thanks for the cirts..

Anyway, your working hard, keep it up!

I've some how missed the last few of your updates. Your work is looking good. I like the last chow entry. Your colouring on that came out well.

Rob, first off i want to say, i forgot to tell you this today, but WTF with that tiny Thunderdome image? You had some reat things going in it that were not coming through at the size you submitted.

ok, this new stuff looks like a lot of fun. good to see you experimenting for experimentations sake without worying about conforming to some sort of standards.

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10773&stc=1&d=1155167687 this has some freat design and composition in it, the only thing bothering me is all them random colors in the figure, remember to simplify.

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10774&stc=1&d=1155167710 and http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10778&stc=1&d=1155167781 have a Ralph Steadman feel to them. check out his work for some inspiration and for ways he aproached his subject matter.

Skureal
August 31st, 2006, 08:27 AM
You must spend a lot of time for rendering out your sketches. It is clean and accurate, so you can 100% rely on that technique. I like that you have such a big palette of different techniques (with Pencil, Pastell, Marker etc.).
What i see most of the times is that you seem to be not sure with your actual designs. The elements on your last character (the one with the smoke clouds above him)doesn't work togehter very well. It would work better if everything looks like "one piece". If you have e.g. a big heavy piece you might put somewhere else (related to rules of compostion and contrast) several smaller pieces to balance that out. In that case the position of some elements is causing that the picture is falling to the right side. The eye notice something is wrong. These things are easy to avoid, with e.g. little compostion thumbnails before you start the actual sketch.
Hope that helps more than my previous post, which is ages ago O_o .

Yeah, the vigostar updates. Kind of hard to track down your sb without a link btw. Well I gotta love that portrait of the old man. Very nice, what is the medium. its actually refreshing to have the absence of the fine ballpoint lines I'm used to seeing you do, although that is great too. One thing I forgot to add about the Chow is the high position of his cock, I think it should be about a few more inches lower...

Hope to see more, dude. Love the update!

Those inks are damn hot. Did I say those inks are damn hot, oh yes they damn well are :^^:
Yeh im really impressed with the way you render your images with pen. What baffles me is how you get it so pure with little line marks. You see if I try and eliminate all the lines to form a smooth shape they just form up together and create a dark value so It seems almost impossible to have changes in tone. Do you have some sort of pressure sensitive pen or something?

Perhaps I simply shouldnt use shitty byros lol.

vigostar
December 12th, 2006, 02:47 PM
gnoll- very true... Ive been trying to sway away from the whole uber rendered look cuz thats the gist of the compliments I get when people see my artwork... Ive been working or trying to impliment more design and thnking about shapes more now... thanks for stopping by and no never been a tat artist.. thought about it.. but, then I realized how much I hate blood..

Mr.Magic- thanks man... its really a long process... I typically use a regular pen although I found that the bic velocity pen is really great and it rarely blots up which is a huge plus when ur talking about pens... Its really more about patience because ultimately what your doing in rendering over the form a few times before you get the desired value. I always start off very light.. Blocking in the major shaded areas, then I slowly start to increase pressure (yes, its all about the pressure) to get a heavier bolder line... also learning how to manipulate the medium is quite helpfull.... Thanks for stopping by...
