whats the secret in drawing a beard?
a little information on me: i'm an 18 y.o. pupil from germany, graduating next year. during the course of this sketchbook i want to create a decent portfolio with which i can apply at a decent art school. regarding this, i depend on all your critiques :P
oh, and give me a kick in the nuts if i don't update on a regular basis.
btw. i'll keep this all digital, as my scanner went bonkers half a year ago.

i went for a sideview of that head now. not exactly pleased with it yet...
im going for a full body illustration now. this is gonna be a working class superhero.

in the latest post the fellow's head is too shallow. also, you have a 'skin' tone...but it lacks the rosiness of a living being...right now he looks plastic. look at some of renoir's and degas' work and you will see a definite way they use cools and warms w/in the facial structures.
cheers

actually i went for that 'plastic' or 'rendered' look, similar to 'the incredibles'. not sure, if this works out, though.
you're right about the head being too shallow. i'll try to rework that. thanks for looking :]

Maybe you could do some more head studies or something like that to get the proportions dead right...keep on posting tho!

yeh, i agree :] while im quite pleased with the frontview head and its' slightly unrealistic proportions, the sideview is rather problematic.. i'll update soon.

Hey Hanuka...thanks for the crit on CHOW. The hands and feet are a disaster area as for some reason I just couldn't motivate myself to touch them much during the entire rendering...go figure!
Anyhow, your last post was on the 7th, so I don't know if you're still working on this superhero...However Apollo had a good crit about the skin tone and lack of cools and warms. Even Mr. Incredible had some rosiness:
http://news.leoprieto.com/2004/12/mr-incredible.jpg
Also, never forget how bizarre the human head really is. This woman is an extreme example as she obviously is some sort of alien-hybrid, but nevertheless she illustrates the point nicely:

Hope these are helpful!

they sure are helpful. it was a huge fault to avoid reference for that piece.
thanks for dropping by. well, i'm a lazy bastard so i did not update this... i went a little further with my superhero but didnt like where it was going, so i abandoned it for now.
i'm currently doing my exams, so there was little time to begin new stuff lately. as soon as i have a new batch of studies and paintings ready, i'll get this sb going again...

just a slight update, since i started with my first ch.o.w.-entry today:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v101/hanuka/chick_jacke.jpg
well, its still mucho in progress, so it will take me another 2 days or so, i guess. plus my thumb hurts now. that jacket was heavy stuff to do without reference at first, so i took a glimpse at leyendecker - i bet some of you recognized it already ;)
this isn't the whole pic btw., i actually intended to add a dead dragon to the right, but i'm not sure, whether i can do this in time, so heres the composition without dragon, for now. any crits/suggestions appreciated.

Hey Hanuka!
Since I've checked your stuff last, you've improved alot! Your lines got more consistend and your feel for volumes also. Are you still doing non-digital work? Cause I think the posibilities you have with the digital media can easily lead you into a wrong direction. At least for me the analog-medias are the best to learn with.
Keep it up!

hey sam, i'm terribly sorry i haven't answered you yet - i just lost track of ca this month :/
i'm still doing non-digital work but as you mentioned, i too feel, that the dark digital side of art is taking possession of me :P my pencil skills seem to vanish lately, since i'm doing so much more work with my tablet. i'll take care of that and post some traditional updates as soon as i get my hands on a new scanner.
for now, just some stuff i've been doing lately - sorry if you've seen em already.
the final of that fugley chick above (i hate it already):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v101/hanuka/chow2_sm_.jpg
this started out as a self-portrait, but i didn't get any likeliness so i went for the most fucked-up look i could possibly achieve. tehehe. hope you like it anyway:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v101/hanuka/sp1112_.png
a ch.o.w. you might have seen already:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v101/hanuka/chow4_mortimer.png
now to some personal project, it's characters for a freeware adventure game.
still evaluating the style and doing sketches

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v101/hanuka/kramer_fin.png
and with this one i have some issues... i fear she might lack some dynamics and that the pose might be a little over-crooked. the hair is a mess, too. any crits and comments _greatly_ appreciated.

edit: photobucket is trying to be funny, but actually it is actin a fool!

I like the portrait and the cartoon characters. The pirate girl doesn't look that good. Try to use the style of the wizard and ghost, they look a lot better.

cool, wee, little characters. I agree with Uzi (and you) about trying to keep to the wizard and ghost style...
You seem to have had a clear idea of the personality of the wizard and ghost and I'm betting that helped the confidence in the lines. Maybe you need to flesh out more fully who she is.
And the SP is sweet! It kind of has a negative quality to it. I like it muy mucho!
And mad props on the CHOW, I loved it when I saw it...

the sp is great, nice dead & alive look to it :) then your cartoon characters are also very good, like you're style. THe pirate lady just needs a little more finishing I think, but the pitarte ghost dude is definitley the best one in the pack. Keep the goods coming!

yeah well... i didnt update this in ages, and it's a shame. but i spent half a year in new zealand and some considerable time either working or in the us, where i am as of now. i just visited ringling yesterday and am pretty confident that it is the college of my dreams. but studying abroad is hard to do without the funds. thats why i decided to sell my body, work part-time and apply for a shitload of scholarships. maybe ill take some sort of loan as well... maybe then I can make it into the illustration programm in 2009. thats no wait, if i consider that i've been here since 2003...
anyone else studying far from home?
not a big update, but from now on, it's getting more constant, i hope. first off, this is what happened to the sketch above, ages ago - never really finished it (it was supposed to have a load of other characters next to her) but for continuities sake:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v101/hanuka/portfolio/tafkasomm_cover_newhead.png
and what i just finished the other day ... some may recognize it from the mr hyde chow. i never finished the topic-piece, but i wanted to do something with what i had... the chow being over i turned it into something completely different, stupid but fun - here's to you samus aran:

Lovely sketchbook, though you should update more often ;)
Brave step to study in the US. The guys over here are constantly complaining about how much the Studiengebühren cost (500 per semester). Hope you'll do it!
The last piece based on your Hyde piece is awesome. The arms in particular are cool, as is the gaze. Nice work! Keep updating!

returning the favor ;)
your last piece is awsome, nice idea with the hand.
the prior pic has flaws in perspective, think about the ground plane and how the feet adjust to it, you should see them much more from above with a horizon that high.
keep up dude, big step forward from your last post
