Here are some of my latest sketches, some are done from ref, and some without. The anatomy stuff is mainly from Jeno Barcsays Anatomy for the artist book. Hope you can cope with the rather long download time, and thanks for taking a look :)

Hey dude, how's it going? Thought I'd drop by and stain your SB. Your latest sketches look great, real nice values. Love the armor on this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/inkfish/43a18395.jpg

SEVANS thanks for the kinf words
sone_one i sure will! studies are a blast ;)
More stuff from my sb. some line drawings from life, i tried to draw just the outlines and tried not to render them at all (with varying success)
the scans turned out to be fucking huge, sketches are bout 250% larger than in real life (so you could see the shaky lines ;))

wow, that skeleton warrior stands out amongst the rest. really great job, would love to see it colored. in your life studies however the proportions of your faces seem to be off. i think you are making the eyes to large in relation to the rest of the features.

Very nice, you've got the anatomy down perfectly. Your pencil works surpass your others I think especially the way you've built up the armour on certain characters.

October 19th, 2005, 07:00 AM
Lazy Gun i don't know about perfect anatomy, still need a lot of practice, but thanks :)
max1975 no ref used. First 2 are loosely based on roman armour, but modified quite radically, the last one kinda based on those previous 2 but some mods... thanks for the compliments
cthomp just regular pencils, i mainly use 4b and graphite. Thanks for stopping by
Sawa thanks i'll post more if i get a prermission from the higher authority ;)
ApolloNuevo damn man, you are right about the eyes. inking without sketch is quite hard, but i luuv it :)

yeah!
örkkejä ja sci-fi solttuja!
Really nice ones , I like your line a lot but I can see that u easily get frustrated and get yourself in to a point that you don´t know how to continue anymore and then you lose your line. am I right or wrong? and that´s a great reminder for all of us muista se anatomia, remember the anatomy. I think the anatomy book that you are using isn´t so good after all. The shadings on that book are blurry. see if u can find some other anatomy books, i prefer russian ones.
but really nice!!!

PERKELE joo, näillä mennään ;)
yeah, spot on. I'm trying to better my line economy nowadays. I've never seen any russian anatomy books, but i bet they must be really accurate, from what i've heard about art schools in st. Petersburg the studying methods are quite hard there.

Really cool work lately, especially on the faces. The kid in #15 is my favorite. Neat hair.
You seem to be having a little trouble keepying the eyes even with each other...I have the same problem. I'd suggest leaving them roughed in for a while to make sure they look right before you go in and define them with darks, but it's tricky because I think it's often that last step where they slide out of alignment. Just something to watch out for.

Hey, man. There are some nice stuff in here. I esp. like that bird on the top. Try to make a rendered piece without the smudge stick. It will force you to tink more about the strokes you apply with your pencil. In my experience, the drawings will get alot more consistent.
Keep it upppp!!!!
Inkfish
October 31st, 2005, 12:40 PM
n0fish you are right, i tend to overuse the smudge stick quite abit, it's a habbit i'm trying to teach myself out of :) i guess the same rule aplies to the smudege stick than ps filters, the less, the better (or something like that.)
Thanks for stopping by!

Your recent updates are looking great. Did you use charcoal in the last ones? Your rendering has such a smooth flow to it, with well-placed sharpness through out that balances things.
Keep on updating, dude.!

That number 3 guy (One you've posted after my last post) is something that I think you should work more on. It's got a really good mood. Only thing that bothers me on that piece is his right shoulder, it's a bit off. Keep posting man. I will keep following your thread.

hey Inkfish. this is a nice sketchbook. i like your still lives and your anatomy studies, but i think you need to keep practicing with your painting skills. also, with the colored peices, try working with various light sources to give your creatures a suitable atmosphere. most of them seem rather incomplete, like their missing some sort of impression about them that would bring them the character their looks simply demand them to have. Keep working.

Great design and rendering on the waterlope; since photeck brings it up, maybe the tail could use a rudder...just seems like that would be a practical thing to evolve.
The guy in your previous post isn't really doing it for me, but you can't win 'em all...maybe the arms and legs are just too sketchy for me. But you did an awesome job with his face.

max1975 about that guy, i originally drew it in bw, and later decided to add color. I guess something happened along the way (lack of skill) and it went to hell. It kinda winged the anatomy and such. [/excuses]

I'm gonna have to ask some of you guys to teach me Finnish someday. Some of my favorite music comes from there but it's hard to sing along, not knowing the language.
I think maybe you should pay more attention to the underlying structure on your digital sketches. Their balance and proportions seem kind of wonky when compared to your waterlopes, which are much more elegantly put together. Maybe with a more solid structure you wouldn't lose momentum.

good advice about the form, i'll have to keep an eye on it.

I'm really pressed for time the next couple of days then going away for about a week, so I can't give your updates the attention they deserve at the moment, but a quick glance reveals a lot of awesome stuff...especially the heads and faces. Just joking, I doubt I'd have a chance with Jenny Wilhelms, even if I had ever met her... :) she's the singer/fiddler from my favorite Finland band.
Digging these last couple digitals...forms seema bit distorted but it looks intentional, so no worries there...

Good stuff all around! Your pencils in the beginning are very strong, and your color work all looks very nice. A few of your color pieces get a little bit blurry and muddy, but only in places where it doesn't matter much. You also come up with some really cool stuff, lots of great ideas in here!

Your shading is awesome, and I really really like the wierd creatures. Their faces are definitely unique (and some were downright creepy!).
This is a minor crit, but it bugged me a few times. It seems like when you do three-quarter views the far eye isn't always lined up with the closer eye. It seems a little skewed at times. Probably nothing a little attention won't fix.
And to answer your question I usually draw whenever I can, that is maybe two hours a day on most days (when I've got time I draw more). I guess that my goals are to learn how to make good illustrations and potentially do some sequential art.

Hi Pogy
I usually use custom brushes. I start with softer brushes and work my way "up" to the harder ones (i guess). I usually have my brushes set quite low opacity 70% and lower down to 20%, when i add color to the backgroundcolor. My process is still quite chaotic, so i can't share more light to it, but if you have more questions i'll answer them gladly.
Oh and thanks for the compliment :)

Undead guy looks horrifically great... I need to know how to color and detail like that myself. It's irking me that I can't see the whole picture because of how dark it is in the lower areas though. Very nice use of colors.
I'd say that the right arm, from the shoulder is spaced too far... As if the right side of the body is wider than the left side.. Then again that might just be me.

Zombie knight looks pretty good to me. Maybe there should be some more highlights on the head to match the metal? I dunno, your choice.
jlward
February 21st, 2006, 06:28 PM
Hey inkfish, the cape is bothering me a little. I think it should be wrapped around the neck a little more. This will allow you to further define the shape of the neck and it looks more natural.
The intense highlights make the cape look like it's made of plastic. Are you using dodge and burn? If so, you're better off choosing the right color and painting it in yourself. Light tends to be more diffuse when it hits clothing. You have a nice range of colors developed in your existing painting. It's just that, in my opinion, they would look better if they were a little softer. I hope you don't mind, but I've done a quick paintover to illustrate what I'm talking about.

i really liked these ones from the first page..
the creature designs are also really cool id like to see more of those. youre doing well with the photoshop stuff. i dont know much about colour so im not in much of a position to crit, the latest one has a cool renaissance feel to it!
with shading, especially with bodies and faces, try to divide the mass into planes and then just shade the one thats furthest from the light source,....if you can find the plane break then thats when the dark shadow will begin. if you smudge the whole body you are adding tonalities, but im not sure if it fully gives it a 3D, mass feel...
its not really a specific thing, but just something to keep in mind.
keep it up :)

Ink - that candy-cane-borg-headed kid is cool. i like how you mixed the subject. Maybe if you played with the levels a bit, it would make him pop out more from the background. Good stuff.
What made you pick a WWI tank? Just wondering.

pogy366 Thanks man. I'll try to tweak the little guy later, but now i have to sleep (i have work tomorrow, and i should be there in less than 8 hours :P) Don't know why i picked the tank, just stumbled to a cool ref picture, and decided to take a smash at it :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/inkfish/speedy2.jpg this is an excellent inllustration of why skills matter in imaginitive work...I don't know what that is in place of a head, never seen anything like it, but now I know what it would look like if I rotated it 90 degrees in any direction, how it would reflect the light, and I can even take a guess what it would feeel like if I touched it. Great job.
Blood angel's cool too, though he seems to be tipping over...might be okay if you just flattened the bottom of his right foot...

the latest mech armour dude is really cool! altho i think he needs some more texture :P
i really like the tank and the big headed dude before that too :D
the speedpaint before that is pretty damn good for just 20 mins, and even tho its a speedie i think you should watch proportions- eyes look a bit far apart to me.

That little child creature with the candy cane is really creepy. Really really creepy.
I wonder, maybe experimenting with specular highlights might help pop out your pictures. You've got some really good gradients, but some areas of bright reflection in shiny areas could improve it.
ah.heng
February 26th, 2006, 05:00 PM
for the mech dude, i think the shape of the feet armor could be refined a little, it doesn't feel like it can support it's weight at this moment. and he seems to be almost tipping over.
that alien kid is kinda cool though. i like it :)

those colours are comin out cool!!!
with the face i might suggest just drawing the pure shape without details first, then dividing up the front/side planes, then looking for the centre lines which are in the middle of the front plane...keep checking your pic in the mirror to stop it from going crooked...its just about finding your mistakes early on and fixing them before mocing onto details/rendering. hope it helps

Placeboast Hahah, if sketchraping your girlfriend is wrong i don't want to be right ;) You should definately try the calligraphy stuff, it's cool, especially because it's possible to fuck up a drawing in just one jitter of a brushstorke. Fun times. The nascar ladies were kinda tricky to get right, but after 150 hours of love it all worked out in the end.

Thank you veeeeery much for that advice you gave on the shading/lighting. That was exactly what was bothering me with my drawings but I couldn't spell it out. the undead guy is certainly looking better. Though it kinda freaks me out that his head has tilted more towards the camera. Kinda brings to mind the portraits in all those haunted castles (Eyes turning etc). I really hope you changed that position, otherwise it's got a life of it's own (or my medication has died out on me). You made an excellent improvement there, you sketchrapist you.

give you some tuff love anyways, on the gorilla hes to middle gray
it need more lights on some areas to sing along with the darks,
the mid rage tone is flatteing the image.
On the first page the portrait of the guy with is eyes closed is missing
his core shadow, and that causes a similar efect as with the gorilla,
remeber that the darkes area on shadow it not necesarilly on the edge of form
but in betewen the direct light and the reflected light(s) on the shadow area

It's evident you put a lot of thought into your drawing. On Bachus - Arco's right. Also his shoulders are a bit too broad - either give his hips more body or correct his torso. That third drawing's makin me think of wes9k, and the arrow on his head looks like Andrew Jones.

i think you should go for a more dynamic movement in batman- give the waist a twist by turning it to face us more, and yuo could have the far arm going backwards, so that his fist is held about level with his face or so

A thing to remember on the batman pic, the contrast should almost always be higher than you think. It's really easy to make stuff low contrast when you've been looking at it for a while. I almost always have to bump up the contrast and repaint some parts on my stuff.

I really the latest batch of digitial paintings, batman in particular (the contrast is doing much better too). Some of the pencils look rushed, but maybe that was intended. Watch out on the bodies though, in some of the pencils they're awfully small for the heads.

i like the digital stuff , improvements there i think. however in the eyes of your faces i feel they are coming a bit flat, maybe you could do some long eye studies from life or from a photo or something, i know it really helped me.

Hey guys!
Sorry for not updating so much lately, i've had some hectic times lately, mainly because my landlord kicked me out of my studio apartment, and i have had to look for a new house. Also i was in Amsterdam for a week. Man that city kicks serious ass! Rijks museum and red lights for the win :)
on to the comments
rodrigo! Thanks for the heads up! i've always had some problems with eyes and hands, i guess i'll have to do bunch of studies like you said.
staylorhey! thanks for the kind words! the excuse why the heads are so small is that they are supposed to be sketches of children to a project. No doubt i have another "project" next week :)
sanya Thanks! :)

Kids are really hard though. I can't do them myself so I've got no advice. It's good that you're drawing them though.

Hello man!!
You are still lacking a good ligth and dark division,
try doing some selfportait pratice at night with a very
VERY strong light, but use only one and on a very dark
room so that you can get the idea of light and dark;
remeber that hands have bones in the inside
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/inkfish/inkfish148.jpg
other than that I really like the concepts you pull out lately

Sometimes you do have very low contrast. Maxetormer seems to have a good suggestion.

Stuff's lookin' great Ink! I especially love your ink sketches. The bird ones are awesome, bro. I'd love to see more of that inky goodness. The digitals are getting better and better as well. Just continue to push those values and contrasts. That goes for your pencils too. A lot of the time they seem kind of washed out. Give us some dark cast shadows and than some really light areas to draw our eyes around. You have to have the basics of lighting understood to really render something realistically. You're getting there. You just need to continue to push the contrast. It's key. Great work as always, man. Lookin' forward to more. Sorry I haven't been around more often. Take it easy.

Zebzfree hi! the points you made are really valid, the washed out look is a testament of my retardness, i used to blend the pencils like a madman with my blender. Now i try to build my values more carefully. Thanks again for pointing that out, it helped a lot.
Staylor thanks for the encouragement. The batman pic won third place in a contest. I got Superman dogtags and a comic out of it :) Sweet deal.
Tigermilk Thanks! i hope i won't dissapoint you with further updates :)
maxetormer Thanks for the awesome crit. The washed out look is a really stupid habit i have as i explained earlier. The contrast and light is something i will have to look into. Hard. Thanks again for the kind words and good advice!

Very good work in general, just a few pointers -
When you outline areas, you don't have to keep the pencil All the way on the paper, you can cut the line at some point (when light hits the surface, for example). The mind of the viewer will connect these lines automatically. I recommend studying the line usage, it really makes things easier. That's how I think anyway =). Also keep the word contrast in yer mind. Keep up the hyvä työ! -dee

cool stuff studies of other artists work and the fruit looks pretty helpful. try using one continuous line for the outline as opposed to several short, choppy ones.

Congratulations, you have succeeded in making a horrifying psychotic alien symbiote even more horrifying. That's not easy to do.
If you want to take that picture even further you may want to make carnage/may shinier by making the shadow edges sharper and bumping the specular lights even further, but that's if you intend to work with it more.
