Your first post is without references, hot damn I would like to see what you can do with references. The african guy well he doesn't really have any african features but he is still cool. I like the skeleton and the pencil pages the most.

Hey fox thanks man, i didnt really notice her peaking out there to tell you the truth. I'll see you in class tommorow, i should really be working on the project now dammit.
sevans - cheers, that page is definitely the busiest but looking back on it now its so flat i really need to stop being lazy and render more.
ODT - thanks for dropping by, i didnt really have in mind to go on an african theme i just wanted a sort of tribal look, still i guess it worked. Me stop now. :blahblah:
sly - thanks a lot, i dont have access to any life models at the moment so there wont be any live ref coming by any time soon and normal people move to fast damnit! I should probably say i drew the hands from life i forgot to mention. I dunno why eveybody assumes he's african, hes from the easter islands if you dont mind! :teeth:
^-^ and just for you ive got some reference pages coming up
first page ref from http://www.fineart.sk

Fantastic sketching Asgardian. Although the lack of feet might be something to look at... That said - great stuff!

dunefish - thanks man, i hadnt noticed the lack of feet to be honest, i guess i never really rated them as important but ill try to put some more effort into creating whole bodies, feet n all.
Straight to the update, some stuff i did today in class and some the night before worried that my lacking any work might give the tutors grounds to dislike me.
Its all project work on the making and breaking of icons and im breaking down death as an icon (yeah i know it sounds weird.) Without delay....
oh yeah dont ask because i have no idea why they came out so small, i didnt change the settings and i can be bothered to do it again. oh once again no ref

Cartoonfox - thanks man, its gonna be tough getting the roughs done by tuesday, what are you doing from breaking down an icon again?
Right first up some uni project, these are just some of my sketchbook pages from our last brief on consumerism. Apparently someone blowing their brains out with a 9mm is too brutal a way to represent the effect of consumerism on people, who knew?! :er:
Oh and if there are any budding/wannabe concept artists out there that are studying illustration and have experience in making the briefs even a bit relevant please share your experience...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/alx_b/con3.jpg

It was great to look at your mini book on thursday. The design/composition of the pages is awesome, the tipex is great!!.. Would be cool to see you take on some more finished tonal pieces, maybe on larger paper :)... Your faces in profile are particularly good... I was about to say you didnt post some of the stuff I saw, but I see the last time you updated was dec 15th! Keep this book alive!!

leran-thanks very much, i cant believe that you found my book to be honest i thought that this thread had sunk to the depths, it was cool meeting you hope i see you at another meet sometime soon (dont go getting too good!) hope we didnt put you off with all the getting lost fun
eriboss - cheers man, ive left this thread alone for too long. I hate that thing now i just feel like i could do it so much better now and that was a couple of months ago.
yadam - funny you should say that the first page in my new sketchbook is, well you can see it below, did it in my boring friday lecture, rendering an a4page with 0.7 mechanical was not fun after a while
Right ive been away from ca for too long and since i last posted i have finished a sketchbook and started an new one. So heres the stuff from the new one.
I really need to get my values down, this was done because i was inspired by sketchlings little thumbnail studies so i did one and liked it and did a blown up version.

Right because my painting sucks ive concentrated on value for a bit, and then i will move onto colour. I only had one orange left for a still life so i took a couple of things from my flatmates.
I really dont think that watercolours are my medium, they are to damn hard. So rigid if you want to be representational.

Looking good dude. One thing i've noticed is that you seem to avoid hands and feet on your characters, and also all the faces are in profile.... I see on the last guy he's holding a sword. The hand looks a bit too square, so I suppose you just need to do some more studies :)
Nice colours for the apple and orange too. Like you said, just push the values a bit more and it will be great.
[void]
April 3rd, 2006, 05:59 PM
thanks man, i dont do the feet thing conciously but everyone notices for some reason, 'well its good but wheres the feet?' weird. Yeah i just find faces so much easier in profile and the thing is i hate having things that i dont like in my book i know its stupid so only the lucky ones survive.
I think ill just do a new still life i hate coming back to old images, there is something really stale about coming back to old work, i find it a chore and not any exciting because i already know where its going. Yeah i agree with the hands, i tend to find ways around what a find hard and not deal with them, i think im tackling the profile thing though, its quite easy to translate to 3/4 view so then after i can move that do a decent profile so hopefully they will all look ok.
This has got a bit out of hand ive written an essay, thats avoiding doing 100frames of animation for you.

i agree with Farvus. You've got a really good handle on the gesture of things, that's for sure. I haven't gotten there yet, I think. Or i'm too scared to try and see failure :P. Whichever one. haha.
great work though. What is the name of the pen?
This art stuff costs alot nowadays. Get a piece of paper from an art store, it's like .50 cents . Get it at any other store and its like .01 cents. haha

Just a few more brushpen thumbnails, they are mega fun you dont have to worry about perspective and proportions are way easier to gauge and you progress noticeably every time you do them, everyone should have a go at them.

hey man. nice form studies. They are just a little off in spots but keep doing them over and over(huh, i'm one to talk) and you will figure it out. And soem of your hatching and shading is looking a little muddy. try to be a little smoother with your strokes and really dig in with your pencil when necessary. but you seem to be doing good. and i'm a big fan of the red lead. i'd like to see more of that. keep it up.

Hey man, basically block in the entire piece. So change that white background to a mid grey atleast.
Then add some temperate highlights and shades, cold in the light, warm in the shadows maybe, on skin a light blue for highlights and a nice orange for the shadows works quite nicely.
Then sort out if you want the areas in the light to be saturated, if so, de-saturate all the shadows, i think this would work well on this piece, and help give it some impact.
The most important thing is light source though, choose it, think about it's strength and block in all the shade.
SOmething like that... :teeth:
Hope that kinda helped...

Back to the work, these are just some ideas for a personal project that was just stared at stupid o' clock this morning/last night, with cartoonfox.
Basicaly converting the blurb of a film we havnt seen into a game brief and doing the art. It should be fun and when some more substantial work has been made we might drop it into the ff section

there's some really nice pics in there guys. they all seem so.. finished. what i mean is that none of that looks sketchy, it all looks like formed ideas. wow your last image is my favourite- i love its style! reminds me a bit of Chris' kind of sketches. your first and third paintings are my favourite, i think maybe with the grassy type ones, would the grass colour get lighter as in fading the further out? like with interlocking spurs ( v shape valleys im pretty sure)? anyways its looking good, id love to see more like your last post

Hi.
Im in awe at the second page and flustered as to why i havent see this before. Not the first time ive missed something good as its laid infront of me but thats another story.
Another person who seems to be inverting their bodyclock too i see? seeing that as i type this youre still online too :P
Nothing much to say about individual pieces on the second page, well maybe that i like your last dump a lot, your style also is really my thing.
I like your approach to your course too :p, i have a similar feel about how im taking my education, that being i just want time to get better before i get a full time job doing what i really want. Im assuming i read into your comment right. Nevermind if i didnt.
Im subscribed for the next update, waiting on you.

You have a terrific eye for graphic design and page composition, something that makes a sketchbook truly fun to look at. That's something I need to get better at, carrying the viewers eye from one focal point to another.

Thanks naomi, I was quite please with the idea and it taught me a lot but i find it so embarrasing now. I would say i will do a repaint but id be lying i like the style so i wouldnt be suprised if it re-emerges later. I look forward to it.
I realised that I my enviroments have all been very similar in apperance and construction so this time i had a go at blobing some random shapes down and making an enviroment out of it, I've learn a lot. Its an oogly image but its given me a new working process so i'd call it a success.

It looks like he has wolverine style side burns, but it may be shadow. I think I like the side burns idea better! : ]
I know it's a wip but the perspective on the feet confuse me, it kinda looks like he's standing on some glass (so that I can see the sole of his feet) at a strange angle. Maybe his feet are hiden by the dress thing but what are those marks at the bottom? They looks like they are going to be feet.
Anyway, have fun in pirate mode I'll see you tomorrow.

Congrats on your first finished digipaint :)
It's finished, but here are a few things that could maybe push it a lil further (off the top of my head, so could be wrong). The values are good, but perhaps the highlights could be lighter for a fuller range. Not sure how I feel about the red rimlight, might gel better if the hazy backbround recieved some of that red light as well.
And good job on that color-no-texture study up the page. Let's see more ;)

Nice work man, franigan is right about the ship/car looking bent. It's cause you didn't carry the view through to the far side i think, if you put some grey through on the other side of the cockpit, it would be much more solid.

Aye, work sucks.
Clouds are pretty tough because they scatter light. With diffused light from the sky, they won't go very dark unless they are dense like rain clouds. It doesn't help that they hold no distinct form either.

Ok replies time, and wow theres a lot. Well........more than i normaly get.
lefran - Yeah i think your right, I was meant to be quite streamlined but as josh said, forgetting to carry the view through the cockpit has resulted in it just looking off. I'm sorry but you are going to have to pay for it like everyone else does.
yadam - thanks dude I try, I think my pencils are lagging a bit to tell the truth im gonna have to play catch up.
Badger - yeah dude your spot on i can believe i missed that I shouldve added it on the other side >.< I fear uni! I'm looking forward to getting back but i hope i dont slump into apathy.
mentler - thanks dude
Eri - haha mate i cant believe you picked THAT out of alll my images! Im not that familiar with flaptraps stuff ill have to check it out. I want to KILL that stupid a5 book now it feels like theres nothing but crap in there i need to relax and stop rushing in it i keep creating junk. Yeah I'll have to pm you about the art dude, make it a trade if you want?
Qxzi - Cheers, though I don't think I'm gonna do too many more like that.
Meatsworthy - Yeah they're take a suprising amount of time to render actually, I spent way longer on the clouds than i did the planes. Yeah I've spied that before, I guess its (yet again) a matter of practice, theres not enough hours in the day i swear.

Hey dude.
Like the last update, the texture of the shell is really nice.
If I've got one simple suggestion, it's to axe the black line around the top of the shell to the left. It's creating a contrast which goes against the lightfall.
Just had a look through the last page as well. The skeleton is really great, and you're showing good use of the brushes in painter - something i could learn from there.
The quicky red white and black ones are great. Definitely a cool style.
Will we be seeing you in Cardiff?

Tie - thanks mate, yeah ive still been doing pencil work its just a bit of a hassle to upload. I like this new direction with the digi! The background is implied wonderfully too, it looks like buildings in the thumbnail. My *tiny* crit on that would be the right arm doesn't read as well as the rest of the painting... great stuff :).

Meatsworthy - Thanks im still finding my way in pretty much ever medium so im still playing with processes etc. Hopefully ill never tie myself down to one process but we'll see. Yeah i wanted to keep that front arm dark i wasnt sure how to make it read better.
Small update, ive been having HUGE difficulty with inorganic environments so after several failed attempts and a couple of beers i used ref and did this one hour speedy.

considering you dont like unorganic stuff, its really good, the colours are lush, i also really like the 'cliche'd doodle' of the girl, her eyes are lush, reminds me a bit of the memoirs of a geisha main poster but still cool, a lot of awesome stuff in here! i think i need to do daily speedpaints like you, because i havent put in hardly any effort into it!

In recent pieces thats definately a step in the right direction, tis the tits!
Also, taking your stuff and giving a bit of a HPX twist is looking cool too, sorta refering to: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/alx_b/IMAGE0126.jpg
I was actually going to reply to post #202, seeing as, like you, im also awake at that time and id just finished drawing :P
I was impressed with the colors on the train in the previous version and now that youve knocked it up a notch its all that much better. How long roughly did that take? :o
Im about to start following suit more seriously again and attacking those reference images with vigor!

Thanks sean, I think your being a bit overgenerous there ^_^;
Just a doodle that i've lost interest in, i can feel myself falling into a rut sometime soon. Hopefully when i finish this sketchbook in a couple of pages i can start with a nice fresh new one with so many possibilities for improvement.
At the moment everythings feeling stale and ...well shit.

Eugh thanks for the encouraging words dude, I'm working on a painting right now to try and get past it.
But to be honest with you i'm not where i should be technically, so i'm going to try and focus when i sketch and spend more time on each page. Maybe even go so far as to finish a few things, I'll see if i can finish the last of this stupid sketchbook tonight then i can start a nice new fresh one.
I think I just need to stop being so lazy and making excuses, comparing my work to other peoples has really helped me to wake up and realise where i am and how much i have to do.

disco - thanks very much, I wish i had picked something a bit more interesting than that stupid train to paint. Yeah i dig eri's stuff, i feel i've been ripping off everyone lately, on that note...
heres a little paint that i did today, im not sure if i should do anything else to it, we're a doing an illustration project on the apocalypse so i can whack it in for that which is a bonus, best project we've ever had..

Progress with the last piece, i'm not sure if im gonna call this final or not. Im unhappy with certain bits but when i closed photoshop i forgot to resize back and it autosaved the low res version which pissed me off. That mask isn't idealy what i wanted so i might come back to that if i can be bothered and do an actual face we'll see.

Good string of works here Asgardian. Where are you studying at the moment? If you don't mind me asking =). I think your work shows real interesting developments recently, keep up the hard work!
P.s I was a bit worried about the static nature of that gas mask dude, but you've pushed it a bit and I like the new direction, could do with a bit more cleaning on up his leaning pose though. Can't see any curve or lines passes where his hips and chest begin y'know? Kinda makes it feel flat along that line of his right chest.

Wow, wonderful progression here, your digi skills are coming along nicely, keep drawing aswell. I would suggest when rendering with pencil, try to render with the form of the anatomy of direction the clothes are flowing. Looks like your doing that, just trying to put it in your head. :P Keep it coming.
