April 17th, 2007, 10:43 PM
thanks guys
a 30 min speedy adding colour to a pencil page just thinking in terms of blocks of colour and light
now that i look at it everythings come out far too 'pastel'

April 17th, 2007, 11:17 PM
i think if you gave the sky a little bit more of a vibrant blue it would get rid of that pastelly feel. i like the 4 legged robot in your last post.
[void]
April 18th, 2007, 09:41 PM
Did a study of a skull (thankyou ebay), it kind of sucks but the next one will be better. I need to do more of these I learnt a lot.
oalexis
April 18th, 2007, 09:52 PM
right now my eye kinda gets lost around the teeth...i don't know what the lighting looked like but perhaps inside the mouth between the teeth should be darker so it reads better? just my two cents, otherwise its very nice :) i like ur sketchbook.
[void]
April 19th, 2007, 01:08 AM
Quicker one this time, I want to have another stab at this and spend a really long time on it when i get the chance.
oalexis
April 19th, 2007, 01:24 AM
;) nice gaps between the teeth. is it the same skull? there are subtle difference that lead me to believe they aren't. I like the tonal gradations on your first study tho. I think its because it has a higher contrast.. the darks are darker. I hope you get around to your longer study. btw how long did each of these take?
[void]
April 19th, 2007, 01:28 AM
Haha thats just my inaccurate draughtsmanship im afraid, maybe why i can only afford one skull at the moment. The first was 2-3 hours maybe the second was 1 and a half, now its 6.30 am and i realise i should have left it till tommorow and the result probably would have been better.
Just reading through some tutorials and i already see where im going wrong, I need to simplify at the beginning more and work through my values more sequencially to keep the relationships stronger instead of chopping and changing.

April 19th, 2007, 02:38 PM
really enjoying this SB [void]
I love your studies and figure drawings,
nice stuff overall :)
oalexis
April 19th, 2007, 03:08 PM
i don't really get what you meant by chopping and changing, but i've heard it helps to sorta squint your eyes when looking at a picture to get your values and stuff right. it blurs everything so you can only see value, and not concentrate on details. (what animal is that skull from? my guess is coyote)

It was something along the lines of thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. Your "uni junk" is hilarious. I like the mark making in that landscape. Sorry to hear about your course. Sounds shit like. You should do that 1 year drawing course after though. Sounds good.

Jabo - Thanks glad you like it.
Flaskpost - Cheers
Molly - :bashful: Glad people think that im actually going somewhere with this stuff. I worry sometimes that a lack of focus on subject matter is just hindering me. Ill keep at it in here hopefully it will be better the next time that people visit. Thanks for dropping by.
Bhanu - thanks very much, I think that there are a lot of artists more deserving of such praise on here.
Mr.Blonde - Thanks very much mate, hopefully i can pick up the pace now that its summer. Hope the atelier is treating you well. Be nice to DC he's only a lad.
Lawva - Ta, see if i can make the rate of improvement a bit quicker. Ill have something decent to post soon.
tensai - Thanks I've been really inspired by lukias lately, looking at his stuff is teaching me a lot and i feel that its helping me out hopefully it shows.
Bhanu - Thanks again, I'll try.
Infinit - Cheers people seem to really like those little doodles, hopefully im working on it. THanks for stopping by.
Just had a go at making a gif, How the hell do you get them down to size but keep the dimensions reasonable. Or do you have to apply for size privelages?

May 29th, 2007, 05:40 AM
Hey man, I'm super flattered that you've been inspired by me work and that you're using it to improve!. Don't stop with the rendering but I'd get down with working on the linework perhaps more so. I think some us(myself included) use candy coated rendering to gloss up a sketch.. but its often nice furniture in a poorly constructed house, if you get me. Styln work all round man, keep up with the slick improvements!

Lukias - Holy shit how did you stumble into here?! Yeah I know what you mean, I think that I will focus a bit more on constructing my figures with lines rather than relying on the rendering to fill in the gaps. I'll keep trying, never know i might get somewhere one day. Thanks for dropping by.

I really really dig what's happening here man. You've improved loads since I last visited. Lukias has a point of course (and yeah I fall in that category more than anyone else) bu overall I think the direction you are taking is pretty damn solid. Looking forward to seeing how this develops because by the looks of things you are becoming one badass artist.

Decide wether you want your lights to be cool or warm. Right now everything is a cool tone, except the shirt. If he's supposed to be indoors, keep those lights cool but give him warm shadows. The opposite if he's outdoors. I'd say put a light-medium value background to set off the pale focal points (head and jacket) while still making the darks visible. Something two steps darker than the lights.
Otherwise, I like your stuff. You're a sketching machine!

Something that could be interesting is adding some texture to the nearest ground area since it one of the only place where we can see some details.
There's somethings about the sunlight's colors that's bothering me. Maybe making it a bit more saturated as it gets near the sun ?
Did you use a ref for it ?
here's one i found:
http://www.geocities.com/kevin20_1981/sand_storm_convoy.jpg
Anyway, it looks pretty good and this comment will be more appropriate for something more elaborate :)

Just some life drawings from monday, i felt that it went quite well until the model sort of got excited. Seeing a man full mast live kind of knocked my concentration a bit still it gave us something to talk about at the pub after.

Love the guy on the latest one, watch the perspective on the mech's forward right arm, elbow joint is playing havoc with my brain, though you may just need to turn the shoulder a bit more. I'm no sure, it's you mech :P

Thought i'd have a go at the eow for once, we'll see if i get it finished on time. Posting it here to try and prompt myself to carry on with it. Here it is so far.

Realised a while ago that i aint posted in here for over a year, which was a huge headfuck.
Love how things are comin on, your greyscale things in your sketchbook and digital are like comin on tenfold. Although, with your sketchbook things it looks like youre using a hardish pencil? Because the range on the values just isnt quite there for some of them... i guess it could be the scan though.
Good shit anyway mang, I should really be less antisocial on CA, but i really dont have much to offer.

Aye, Adam, your entry for the inferno EOW was the first that I've seen from you - I voted for it because of the radiance of the carnage it embodies. The time could be futuristic or primordial, earthly or nonearthly, volcanic wasteland of a planetary geyser.
For your WIP in progress, at first glance it resembled a penguin without a black undercoat beneath it's chest plumage. At second glance in your updated version, it could be a lone snowman on his neverending path to reach the winterscape he seeks. As a suggestion, you could draw a little storm cloud directly above his head, raining down on the luggage that strains, drenching the hopelessness of his journey. After looking at each image's growth, I think you could actually expand on this - maybe turn it into a series. "The Journey of the Snowman and his Luggage" or the name of this character. The series could begin with his home, maybe an arctic winterland habitat/Christmas themed utopia where global warming is diminishing what iceberg the race of the snowmen have left to cling their frosty bottoms onto. It starts at home, and then goes around the world, from the 9 wonders to the mountains to the grasslands, to New York City, to the volcanic landscape of the inferno, to the moon, to the end of the universe, and then to his home where he sinks back into the snow from which he came.
It's a possibility - a suggestion from an observer. I hope that anything has helped, [void]
Keep doing you

morning adam:)
this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=241821&d=1195356105) one is very nice, and i am glad you opened up the composition in this version gives a sense of immensness that matches the characters backpack.
latest thumbnails are very nice along with the more finished concept, perhaps a touch more contrast could be used on the airship, such as the underside of the balloon just to make it really come alive, then again, what do i know.
hope your well mate, seriously impressed with this stuff.

Yup, you're getting better all right.
The steampunk environments are awesome - the thumbs are really very strong and show an excellent design aesthetic both in terms of the elements and the image itself.
Other than that, the character design is strong, and I'd like to see more variants of the same thing. One thing I've had to force myself to do is work from a brief. Starting with design requirements and fleshing out thumbs and roughs from that is the best way to design, showing that you can actually do it. "Just drawing stuff" helps your shapes develop, but actually requires less and less thought and often ends up painting yourself into a corner of self indulgence.
I'm talking about me here, not you - don't worry :)
OK, just took a look at the page before this, and the thumbs really do show promise, and some of the right idea. My suggestion there would be to continue with that and focus your efforts on a specific thing.
Hey is that a kiwi???

Your tiny sketches are so great, I must find my brush pen now.
I am not sure if it is just me but the perspective of your knight guy's belt buckle seems a bit weird?

This latest batch of value sketches is fantastic! You're really starting to get a precise handle on your tones. I would suggest lightening the ground planes a little in the top few studies in order to make the forms a little more instantly readable. The staircase pic is very well achieved - the forms recede very believably. It might've been nice to see the statue's shadow cast down the stairs (depending on how high or low your light source is). I think it would add a little more personality to the scene.
These are minor points, though. You're making great strides at the moment.
Keep it up!
Ta, Nick.

Thanks for the kind words guys.
More of the same, tried painting straight colour.... wasn't so good. Too many variables for my brain atm.
