Wow, that landscape is pure bling, nice palette/amosphere/everything. Great work. For some reason it reminds me of your more angular figures. Don't know why. It's got a good amount of energy for being suck a static image. There's some fun stuff happenin in these new figure drawings, but I think the ridges in the paper might be workin against ya. Toned paper is super fun tho.
Also, this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=37857&stc=1&d=1161276509) is killer!

October 24th, 2006, 05:36 AM
Yeah Mag-Neo might be right, but that red pencil one is awesome, I'm guessing you repeated that pose adn done it second, after the pencil? Cause it looks like you had a new confidence there, and it has so much energy. Keep at it =)

October 24th, 2006, 01:07 PM
mentler - cheers, thanks for dropping by.
Andy p - Yeah the paper quality isn't the best but for the moment it'll do me fine! I'm just happy to have a toned paper sketchbook ^_^
I can't believe you chose a doodle that i did on the table as a fav image :bashful:
mag neo - cheers man. Glad you like.
Aph - yeah that pose went on for a while and i didn't really feel like tarting around with that sketch any longer so i decieded to try my new red pencil and have a go at getting some more form into the image.
Today we went to the hunterian museum for drawing class (for any londoners reading i recommend you look into it, its free and has loads of amazing stuff its at holborn). Its a medical museum with loads of interesting specimens of things that are really amazing. The last page is a doodle that was done at the natural history museum that i forgot to scan before.

October 24th, 2006, 01:20 PM
I need to get out and raid the museums more... i think i will on thursday after uni. Nice work captain rugged, You are keeping me motivated by your being motivated.
On the landscape one watch your saturation, if the background is that saturated as it is there the foreground should be equally so, in you version the foreground is quite a bit more desaturated. Just my view. Love the blue on the mountains though.

October 29th, 2006, 06:04 PM
Thanks badger, still a loooong way to go. I think your right about the mountains, i need to get my colour work down more.
A little celebration, my sketchbook has reached five star for the first time! :bashful:
I'm sure that it will go down to 3 soon because someones gonna see it and go this is not 5 start and give i a 1. But till then thanks to anyone who voted.
^______^
Just a doodle in honour of my tutor, who said my work was 'all fur coat and no knickers'. Which apparantly means all style and no content. Which is true, but i gotta say im just loving the idea of fur coat and no knickers, i wouldnt be suprised if theres a character painting coming soon.
Jackwhat
October 29th, 2006, 07:01 PM
Haha, that is an awesome way of putting it. Although im not sure if thats the case and i wouldnt really know how to interpret that.
Id like to be considered to have style but i aint sure of where im going, which is a bitch.
Your shit is definately coming on though, and tis nice to see some lifedrawings and a gander at whats in your sketchbook, it looks like a nice lively sketchbook... would be nicer to have in hand fo sho ;o!

Ah! Type on a concept :D good man. In future really think of your type as true elements along with everything else. Forget that they're words, they are shapes to be abused, emphasied and/or destroyed.
The life studies are great brother. Well done :yayca:
[void]
October 30th, 2006, 06:25 PM
Jackwhat - thanks dude, ive been thinking about style a lot lately. I need to stop displaying the the artists i admire and start developing myself more. Glad you like the life drawings, heres some more.
Kian - yeah dude, i think that was laziness on my part. I was supposed to be doing work at the time and that stupid doodle took far too long.
Tonights life drawings, they were all pretty quick poses. The first two should be last i buggered up the order, thats why the 3rd is so shit (it was my first one). Was nice to get a female model for the first time in a while.

great updates. the last creature is very cool. its still recognizable as a human form but interesting enough to make it creepy. also some nice colors studies and great figurative work. i like the toned paper. you also have a nice graphic quality to some of your sketches. my only suggestion is maybe find your niche with line work. some of your lines feel overworked and others feel very quick and fluid. i struggle with this myself. just keep practicing and you're lines will build themselves i suppose.
cool sb
take care

A speedie from tonight that i did whilst avoiding doing uni work. It was fun i just dotted some tone about and saw a face appear so i ran with it, i might have to try it again.

Your environments are getting really good, dude. The transparent overlays are really nice, and the textures on that second one are great too. The sense of space is really improving in there also.
Stop thinking you suck already.

Seriously though, great sketchbook..I really like the way you have a fairly subtle graphical quality to a lot of these where it doesn't over power the image or character...
One thing that you could do with your environments, or keep in mind anyway, is to try and push the values more, maybe creating more of a contrast, and also adding more depth.

very cool stuff in here. i like your ink stuff a bit. for your pencils, i think you will go further with them if you treat them delicately. get your gesture in and build up from light to dark. you can use that in junction with cross hatching as well. keep truckin' mate :}

Well, ain't this a jewel of a sketchpad. Very inspiring sketches here. I looked at most of your sketches and paintings. I like your ability to take referenced practice and put it to use in your "freestyle" type work. Ya, this is pure uncut.....gotta take it in slowly.....it's the good stuff. Keep it up.

Holy.. dude.
This made me happy, my face grins a big happy grin. Now I'm inspired also.
Great work. The design on both are solid. Did you ink/pen the first design over pencils or is that just some Ps editing? Looks awesome, I would be very happy if someone handed me that!
Just some quick crit, how else do we improve?:
Maybe on the rendered one you could've done with something better at his stomach, looks a bit like a upturned pan.. oh and the head thing, the cheese grater-like-thing, the design I don't mind, its just the way it fits onto the armour/helmet. With no clues as to how it does so, it looks like it floats a little.
Keep up the pace, your doing really great duder. =]

Doodles and lifedrawings, im trying to scale up to bigger paper but i fail miserably every damn time so i screw it up and retreat to my sketchbook.
aph
November 22nd, 2006, 06:38 AM
What size are you trying to scale up to? Is that just for life drawing or for everything?
Anyways.. love the last few, looking really nice on the ink side of things, especially the train one, I like that a lot.
Heres some crits, take 'em or leave 'em..
The life drawings need a more obvious and decided difference between tones. Think of Shadow - Midtone - Light and try and make sure that the image reads well from a distance. Maybe to aid that you could do some drawings using only the shadows to suggest the form, or the light. This way you can hopefully get more depth in tone.
Also I notice that a lot of your lines are quite scratchy when trying to find the form and outline of the body. Its hard to combat that, particularly when you've only got a short time but make a conscious effort to find the right line before you put the pencil to the paper. Think of it like swinging your golf club before you strike.. accuracy and smooth quality.
Lastly don't neglect the hands! They are so important. The first one especially is let down by this. You can draw hands, I've seen some nice ones before.
Keep up the hard graft my friend =)
[void]
November 23rd, 2006, 09:04 PM
Aph - just trying to scale up to larger paper for life drawing about um a3 or a2 last time i tried. I agree with the neglection of hands i really need to start combating that, I do try to tackle what i think is my biggest weakness till it gets under control and then move onto the next one. I know what you mean about 'finding the line' I just don't think im at the stage where i can hit it the first time. As for the tone thing im not too sure your probably right though, at the moment i rely on the way i do things to cover up inconsistency in my rendering. Hopefully im gonna do a long still life at some point soon so i can try to tackle the tonal issue then.
I've been feeling really shitty artwise lately, i just can't seem to get anything right. So heres a couple of shit scans, the only reason these are still in existances is because i stupidly used media that can't be erased, everthing else was wiped. On top of that is a mock up for my website, any suggestions or crits are welcome.

The junk one has lovely legs, but i think the upper torso read strangely, i think it's the placement of the arms, i think the shoulder should be further forward on the near arm. But i love the feeling in it, really works.

Hi Void,
Got some nice stuff here!!, theres some really strong shapes happening in your digi characters and some nice positive marks going down.. All that life drawing is reaping benefits so keep grafting.
I fully recomend drawing big in life class: A1 if possible. Its tough, but thats good because you'll learn more as you are forced to observe more closely whats going on in front of you. + doing sweeping gestural marks from the shoulder is great fun
keep up the good work

A 30 min no ref head study, should do more of these. I tried to pay attention to the forms/planes of the features, which has made everthing else suffer. The annoying thing is the features arnt all that anyway.

Right that first face was lame and it was bothering me so i had to do something to try and sort it out before i went to bed. I dont have anyone else handy so i did a self portrait the likeness is sucky but im not fussed, i was more bothered about the planes and light. I think that less light sources might be a good idea next time. Still i learnt a lot and the next one will be better.
This was about 2 hours.

dreamworker - thanks dude I don't think i deserve them yet but thanks.
Why? I think that in this place there is so much people less good than you, that has a great score. However I appreciate your humility ;)
From the last update I love this unfinished portrait http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=59107&stc=1&d=1165376546
it has a great sense of three-dimensional .

Hey adam!
Long time i haven't checked out your stuff, and i see you got 5 stars =)
hehe, good, keep doing the nice work if you want to keep them.
So, the inks are looking good, the composition and the enviros too.
But i think you can work more on faces. Try to work more on the transitions and the values.
Also, the structure sometimes seems a bit too basic.
For exemple the lips on the last one could use more attentions:
Use more different values, make us read the planes that make lips in a clearer way. The brush strokes are a bit confusing sometimes.
Keep it up !! =)

Dreamworker - maybe but theres also a lot of great people with a lower score than me, I don't think that im there yet but thanks dude its all motivation.
Daniel C - Yeah your right, hopefully some similar studies like that and I'll be able to tackle some of those issues. As for the stars, we'll see how long they last :) Still I'll keep working till I think im worth them. Thanks for dropping by, i've still got a lot to learn from you in terms of the figure and pencil work.
Right since its been posted i can stop holding back now. This is my piece i did for the scandinavia/uk tdome. I was pretty happy with it till i saw it in the middle of a load of really good work. :bashful: Oh well.

looking good Adam,
I know you enjoy crits so I shall try my hardest. alot of your faces and body types (torso's in particular) seem to be very similar to one another, for example on a few of your characters the pectoral muscles are always high up, and thinly stretched across the chest, I am not sure if this is intentional as a style thing or if your doing it subconsciously, **EDIT** it does work as a style, just didnt know if you wanted to differ the characters a bit, bah leave me be, i am hopeless at giving crits!
having said all that the above sketch is a nice exception
keep drawing bro

"I felt bad after going to the national gallery today so i did a value study when i got back and made myself feel worse."
haha man, you're hard on yourself :) comparing your own work with the old masters is not a good idea!
i think you could benefit from doing more stuff like this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=44710&stc=1&d=1162603143), it will surely loosen your paintings up.
and hey, don't think of your art like shit, it's a progress to get where you want, it's supposed to be fun, not filled with frustration!

Jake - Thanks very much, I think colours a bit of a weak point. I need to do some more studies.
Armaldon - Ta, thanks for dropping by.
NicoRaven - How did you know? Um I was sick of the last one it was hard to remember and people spelt it wrong all the time blah blah. This is easy to remember and its a bit more international. Just came from seeing a train ticket with it printed on it over and over. Thanks for taking the time to look through it all.
SantaClaus - Yeah thats something im working on at the mo', hopefully it will show.
Sublimus - Glad you like.
Danny- Yeah you're right, I get a bit set in my ways as I learn how to do things to be honest. Doing things without ref always makes me fall back on a certain shape that I know works. Thanks for dropping by, see if theres a change in these.
Notic - I find its filled with both to be honest. I like to compare with people way better than me it shows me how far behind i really am.
Onto the art. I havnt scanned in a while so i couldnt be bothered to do all of it. Some of this is quite old as well.
Some non ref stuff, two life drawings a master study and some playing with using the side of the pencil to lay down values quickly. Hope you like.

Some late night uni work, pieces inspired by music. Influenced a lot by meester blonde, only this is awful.
Mr.Blonde
January 25th, 2007, 01:18 AM
hi! your piece inspired by me inspired me. I love the simplicity. I did a bit of a paintover (http://alduar.iseenothing.com/07jan/music1-2po.jpg). It doesn't really look like the same image any more, but that is kinda the idea.. it morphs as you work, and changes completely. So, I took your image into greyscale so I could see value more easily, and pumped up the contrast with curves and painted in some new shapes... then I used your painting to give the basic color by setting your painting to overlay at 15 opacity on top of the greyscale... then, I overlaid an old oil painting I did, and erased out what i didn't like... and kept on painting. The most important aspect of color is value, without a good value range you will never get the most out of your colors. once you have a good range, you can use the color picker without getting colors too muddy. my biggest regret is losing the green tones you had... i tend to make my pictures almost monochromatic and in the yellow-red hue range... anyway, thanks for the inspiration! :)
[void]
January 25th, 2007, 02:31 PM
Mr Blonde - Wow thanks very much for the paintover and process. I didn't expect you to see it to be honest.

Keep pushing, these are moving in a great direction. The other thing I wanted to mention was to really push yourself to do STRANGE portraits. Really awkward angles and obscure perspectives. Your quick sketches are really nice, and they never have the very sedate and still looking faces that you draw a lot. If you could practice them and work out how you can achieve them it would take your really great and dynamic stuff a long way. Theres a lot of emotion that you can tap into there and make this stuff a cut above.
Hope you understand what I mean. Keep going!

It was my b'day on the 27th and my girlfriend got me amongst other things a very cool sketchbook which is shown below. I just started it today and got a bit carried away, I drew a lot and couldnt be bothered to scan them all so I only scanned my favourites. Ok I've got a crit / suggestion or whatever.
I just went through your last 4 pages and constantly saw the words "quick", "speed", "sketch", "doodle", "unfinished" etc.
In both your drawings and paintings, I don't think you spend enough time on your work. Some of my favourite pieces of yours are the quickest marker drawings, but I still think you should spend more time on stuff sometimes. Even in life drawing when we have an hour pose, you tend to do quick studies of it. In the National Gallery I don't remember you spending the whole 2 and a half hours on one study.
This painting (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=55204&stc=1&d=1164691943) is one of your most finished in a while, and it's awesome. I really want you to stop losing interest in your drawings/paintings, even if it's just once a week or something.
All this and more applies to my own stuff, but that's not the point of a crit.
Let's get our easels and do this study soon, it'll probably help with patience.
Peace out Vanizle.

This is awesome so far.
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=87843&stc=1&d=1170627511
Some ideas to take it further:
-Rework and make sure the gesture is right, where his head is works but the lean back of the torso isn't there. the torso and back are very flat and seem to be made of a single contour, make a study and push the silhouette of the body a bit more.
-His left arm is straight, bend it a little! Make some action! Study some of your arms muscles and variations and add some tension in there, and make sure you work out whats going on with the other hand.
-Tighten it overall! I love it so far, but my eyes are searching for the design elements that are hinted, just not explained in enough depth to be able to identify them.
I hope you work on it some more, because I know you can take it up a level for sure. Good luck!

Nice batch of last sketches man. There is some improvement going on as always. I really like the dragon a lot, you did a nice work with the anatomy and muscles, especially for 20 min. February 15th, 2007, 07:48 AM
Sup man, Ive yet to try out the new painter, bit annoying because I downloaded an earlier one the other week..*gruff*
The dragon looks as though its coming on really well, great composition. My only crit in terms of design is that the head looks very similar to a fell beast from lord of the rings (the flying things)
Your environs are getting really bloody strong too! I think you should mix more of your environs with your characters say into an illustration or just giving the character a simple background even if its subtle.

Damn dude, you're pencils are really getting hotter - fast. And I dig what you're doing with painter so far.
This last acrylic is actually quite cool, like the looseness. As a start this one's pretty badass, especially considering my feeble pokings at the medium.
glad to see it seems like you're stuck on 5 stars. You deserve em mate, keep posting!

Dug the figure work(especially the ink stuff, always shows confidence), and the monkey turned out great mate.
This was really damn cool due to how different it is...That blot test look and textural feel, really engaged my senses..It makes me feel as if theres something terrifying and predatory in it trying to emerge.

March 8th, 2007, 09:35 PM
Hi there! I'm really liking your style, your linework is cool and has a sort of 'ruggedness' to it that makes it unique. Also love the gestures as well as the sewing machine. Your shading can probably be given the extra umph by adding dark contrasts, especially against the brighter parts of the object.

Heya, long time no see! Great to see you're improving loads - your lines are becoming increasingly confident, and I like it how you're experimenting loads. The marks in this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=105196&stc=1&d=1173398929) piece are very interesting. They all seem to be in just the right place so it doesn't look like a line drawing with random blocks over it. Cool stuff!
Have fun painting - acrylics are awesome. ^_^
Hopefully see ya at the next meet, whenever that may be. Easter?

Man that roughbutt kick ass, think you could give Tom a good run for his money. It might do well with some more texture and keeping the background as flat as possible, but that's just a personal view. It's really a stunning piece.
The pencils are really good too, like the style you are developing, you are starting to make it your own. Forms read well, line work is awesome, nothing to crit. Keep at it dude, always a pleasure viewing your work. And thanks for stopping by book too :).

*runs for his money* Hey, I don't have any!
Super cool man, the the perspective you've used - adds so much to it. Love the parts you've chosen too! I recognize some hehe. You might experiment with colorizing the image layers, sometimes I don't like the colors they add in but here I think it mostly works. Great idea putting the town on the bottom, I might have to steal that :D The vignette up top is a bit oogly, probably work better with some color, the general sepia of the painting would proably work.
Not sure how you are blending or cutting up your photo's, I've found that using this alone or in combination with other methods is great. Double click the layer preview to get the Layer Style window, play with the blend this layer if and blend underlying layer if. Make sure you hit alt on the arrows to split them up - not sure what exactly it does but you will get a better blend with that.
