I was just wondering what everyones brightness and contrast settings are on your monitors because when i look at my digital paintings on my friends computer and labtop they are waaaay different...

my settings are

brightness - 100
contrast - 75

Contrast - 100

And if I´m not mistaken, there´s already a thread about this, with a poll.

Every monitor is going to be different so you can't apply the same settings to every screen. On my Mac, the "Monitors" control panel has a built-in wizard that will take you step-by-step through the process of calibrating your monitor.

brightness and contrast both at 100.

then there's the color tint difference to contend with

Gamma and white point are more important than brightness and contrast.

Woo for spam !

Anyways, what do you guys use to calibrate your monitor? Adobe gamma seems kind of basic.

For my Barco an Optisense IV hardware calibrator, for our Eizo CG21s we use the simple Gretag EyeOne Display calibrator. If you want to go for real calibration the hardware-calibrators are the way to go. Software calibration can´t really give you adequate results - they are mostly just for the personal use at home and to get a somewhat good looking picture that has got nothing to say what it will look on another monitor/ in print.

Hope this could help

Hmm, I wonder if those are rentable... they aren't outrageously expensive for a business or even at the pro level but still... I'd rather buy an Intuos.

I forgot to mention you best have a monitor that supports hardware-calibration, too. And this can be really expensive. Officially the Gretag EyeOne works with any monitor. In my experience you won´t get decent results without the fitting monitor - and we´re talking about the class of an Eizo CG21 ... So if you don´t wanna get pro-level in colour-management I recommend a decent monitor (maybe a Formac that can have its own calibrator) and let the print-shop or Lithography studio do the final adjustments. Waht´s happening in the Internet you can´t control anyway ...

Thanks again, pretty nice stuff but I think once again it's just asanine for the private market no? *Sigh*

Yeah, I think for private use hardware calibration is quite an overkill. I´m at the moment considering going freelance in the ads and for me personally I would consider buying a calibrated monitor for myself. But I´m beside graphic-design and layout into prepress work and have to work directly with printshops.
