Hi there
Havnt painted seriously for 6 months or so, so I decided that it was about time. Also wanted to have something new in for the upcoming Prague workshop. Cant wait to get there. The one in Amsterdam was fantastic.
Anyway - had this one in the "work in progress" section for a few days. Just finished it tonight. I was thinking that he should be holding something in the bleeding hand, but just couldn't decide on anything, so I left it empty.
Although I never really get the feeling that im done with a painting, im pretty satisfied with this one. I guess that I just felt that I mentally had moved past the painting, and I have to do something else.
Would be good to have another one done for the workshop, but don't think I will have the time. Work... Sigh
Anyway - Here you go. Crit away...
By the way - my monitor is pretty old, so I hope the values are about right.
Done in Photoshop.

hey thats nice! couple things, control the dodge a little more, dont let it compete with the volumes, and id love to see a couple more hard edges scattered around. i could go all day and nitpick im sure, but i like the overall feeling of it, and its got some real nice areas, so i dont see any reason to do so. good job! see you in prauge!-c36

i love gasmasks to death, and this piece seems great to me, but he could be holding a cross upside down in his bleedinh hand, and the abs are a bit weird.
hey dude, would u be interested in joining my horro art forum as shown in my sig?

agreed with mr. coro there. i don't know if this is going to be understood, but i suggest more "focus" in the areas around the face, which are the partest closest to the viewer. That means those areas should be sharper, more defined, not so soft... with harder edges :P

Thanks for the comments and the critique. Might do a quick brushup on it before prague. I totally agree with you on the weak points.
Manslauter:

Coro - looking forward to seing you in Prague. Looking forward to seeing those killer sketchbooks again.

You need to sharpen your edges and some anatomy (legs and body) needs to be fixed (not a big problem).
I like the blurry look, but blur is more powerfull if you contrast it with sharpened areas. If the focuspoints have sharp edges, it improves the blurry feel and the composition is more effective.
However, I like this image a lot. I think you know how to handle values and lighting so that they support the composition and also if the colors could need some more variation, they perfectly support the piece.

Hey! This is a really sweet piece. I like it except when it comes to the face. Your proportions seemed to get whacked whe you look at the face. I'm not eally sue the positioning is the starongest either. I feel if it was slightly tilted from the center and giving a tad bit more room for the neck I think you would have it. I would first sketch out the face's structure and then paint it again. He might also need a little more ribcage on his right. Oher than that I really like this piece. It has very lovely colors and the graphic effect around the head is sweet.

Nice work...I really like it.
I tend to agree with those who are mentioning about adding in some sharper areas to provide a little more definition. I like the style a lot and it is very similar to a lot of the types of work that I concentrate on. I just joined but should be posting some pieces soon.
One question, was this a full PS piece or did you begin with a sketch that you scanned/photo'd...what was your process?
Keep up the excellent work!

Hi guys - thanks for the comments. I agree that it could use some sharpening up here and there, and Im thinking that there a few anatomical issues that could be corrected.
I have taken a few liberties on the proportions. He was ment to look 5% twisted. The proportions and the postiure works for me ;)
EmeraldPhase: Normally I would start off with a scanned sketch, but in this case I started directly in photoshop. I was just doodeling around, and the motive just evolved from a lot of weird faces that I was doing at the time.
Thats what makes this piece intresting for me. I didn't have any plan, and it changed a hundred times during the making.
I didn't use any refference. Maybe I should have.
Anyway - Im doing a brushup as I write this. Sharpening and correcting anatomy. And the burnt out white is a little too strong as Coro mentioned.
Gonna take my time with it though - Drowning in work. I have to be at work tommorow on a Sunday - sucks. But thats the price I pay if I wanna go to Prague - PRAGUE PRAGUE PRAGUE. Im staying at the golden sickle, so I hope to see a bunch of fellow freaks and weirdoes.
TIll then
