Ok, i finally decided to make my sketchbook.
I cant guarantee a daily update, so most of them we'll occure on weekends.

New stuff at bottom, scroll down :O

cool beans- nice forms. As far as the shading issue, hard to tell as the digital pix are a bit flat and need a bit of contrast. Setting up an area to shoot artwork depends on local light. Extra lighting can be used you just have to mess around with what works without glare.

One issue with scanning, photocopying, and digital photos is that graphite reflects back and gives some fuzzy.

Nice work-

Heya Recursive_End, i'm glad you decided to start a Sketchbook. The drawings you've shown so far are good studies of life forms. Yeah as Gnome said, the pics are a bit fuzzy so try to get that sorted out. But so far so good. Just keep going and you'll do fine :)

Nice start
I like your anatomy and the one with the flexing muscles, nice shading but you should try to get hold of a scanner :)
btw, why do you include your pen in the snapshots? :P

Im planning on getting a scanner for chrismas :/
Lazy: well it's a focus helper for the camera. But i take pics too close to the paper so it's often blurry
Here's an old ingres study

Ok, here's some new stuff. I decided to restart everything from zero, cause i realised my lack in anatomy :S
anyway here it is (sorry for the bad quality, i'll have my own scanner in a few months)
Still not done with this one, was inspired by Daniel Long's scene "Iniquity insert 1", have to put something on the top left corner, but i dont know what...

my main crit would be that I find the presence of the mechanical pencil in your scans/photographs a lil distracting....

Crits on your work? for me its too early to say. Just draw more; especially from life with regards to the human form. Much of what you must do you probably already know....draw more from life, of families, friends, experiment more with composition, color etc...keep-at-it!

Nice work... perfect to begin, of course is still early to judge everything, but there is some anatomycal problems to be solve, specially on the hands and faces, just a few recommendations, go out and draw in a coffee place or park, use different kind of pencil hardeness to get a variable range of tones, and keep practicing anatomy, but overall donīt stop drawing!!! is the only way to get better, by the way I really like the drawing in your avatar... Keep going donīt stop...

http://pix.nofrag.com/4e/9a/365d2a5a945c8568201d3e29dee5.jpg - i like where this one is going compositionally, but feel like there needs to be a little something to dominate the bottomish foreground area. just a thought. other than that, i think that http://pix.nofrag.com/1c/8b/a78ef80ce84b5b45b5402165f207.jpg definitely could use some detail on the hands, maybe some stronger values under the butt cheeky cheeky cheeks.

You just committed the cardinal sin of not paying attention to the termination of your lines; something which I pay a lot of attention to for some reason.

Well, ok, it isn't that serious, but here's something to keep in mind. When drawing the edges of armor, belts, cloth, or basically anything that wraps around, make sure that the lines terminate so that they show the volume of the shape that is wrapping around.

In a number of places on that pic you have lines that simply end, giving all of the armor pieces a flat look. Pay attention to the edge detail and how the lines wrap around and you will subtly improve your work.

Also, on the bottommost shoulder pad, the line denoting the bulge in the armor wraps all the way to the end. Try not to do this, as it doesn't look as good as a line that simply fades out towards the edge. In the middle, you only have a line to denote the curvature of the object, but at the ends, you can let the silhouette show what the metal is doing. No need for a line there.

Nice new pics btw.

Wow, watch those skills grow!

I love these last couple. I wonder if your pencil is holding you back, though. While you certainly want to keep that pencil flying on all your fabulous studies, for your more personal pieces, I think a new medium more in tune with your value-orientation might really open doors for you. Even if you're only interested working in grayscale, you might want to pick up tubes of black, white, and gray gouache. Or a black watercolor. Or conte' crayon. Or whatever!
Don't stop those studies, though. Those are obviously doing their job.

Hi !
Keep posting, Mosquito-Hunter !!!

Man, I just rechecked you SB, its some great stuff, I really enjoy your shading and I like that you mix it up with some graphic design, It works very well together. I agree withJulien about pushing the contrasts, I think that would really make some stuff pop, but maybe you are going for the mono type stuff? I mean you obviously have the skill to push it all the way, so I figured you chose not to. And again, get your hands on some color, even if its just a colored pencil, dirt cheap. I think youll enjoy it!

Julien: Merci!

Timpaatkins: Thank you :) Well, im actually working on the contrast stuff, its sometimes getting on my nerves. About the colors, well, i'll try to get some color pencils, but...i dont know, i think i fell in love with my pencil :P

i like your studies, and you can see their influence in your drawings from your mind(thats gotta be nice to see!). the sketch in post #61 is really cool, i like the slight stylization of the arm, with the thick wrist makes him look like a tank and the head makes him look almost surreal which is a good contrast from your generic muscly guy.

the clouds in #63 are really interesting, but the rest of the drawing seem somewhat limited in comparison to some of your earlier stuff, i think you just didn't spend as long on them as some others. in the last drawing the guys face is kinda out of proportion, the nose is tiny and the mouth is really high up and the ear is too far back, you got a good feeling of nylon stockings on the woman's legs though.....

keep posting, looking good

Nice hand studies Recursive, but on the biggest hand, you didn't draw in the folds between the finger segments. Try to put those in when drawing fingers, as they instantly add volume by suggesting the contours of the joints.

Kronos: Thanks for having a look on my stuff :) About the first in 63, well actually i did spent much more time on it compared to the other ones. THe thing is that it didnt inspired me at all. Maybe the clouds kinda interested me, but i couldnt get what i want. Just thought of finishing it :/
And it was also the same for the next one. Except this one i liked rendering the nylon.
That often happens to me, i get that image, but right in the middle of drawing it, i suddenly get bored. Its one of the reasons why i dont bother with the anatomy :/
About the deltoid of the last guy you mentionned, yeah, i got a bit lost with it. I should study more that muscle.
Thanks again :)

Dfacto: Yeah, i often forget then and think that the shading would "hide" them and compensate with the volume. I guess i was wrong ^^

as for the huge page of skeletal posture and proportions studies, WELL DONE! i hope those turned out to be useful, it looks like a lot of knowledge to assimilate, (really try using these structures to start off your drawings for a while, don't just copy them as studies once and throw the knowledge away(you know what i mean?, people sometimes just copy things as studies and never really think to use them.....))

in my opinion that mouth would be a lot better if it didn't go all the way in the face, doesn't quite make sense that it's going in the cheeck muscles, and those are well rendered. The face is kind of realistic muscles but iconic mouth and eyes. It would be better with a more real mouth, mayby teeth sticking out, real eyelids and nose, remove that round thing on the back of it's head, or make it look like something relevant. A mechanic part, like a bolt or something, the subject of a horrible experiment gone wrong :D

The jawline seems to be going to far back, watch the transition of the jawline to the neck it's too sharp now, check out some anatomy drawings for the neck. Oh and those horns need cast shadows, think about where the light is coming.

Hehe, that just my thoughts on that one. Don't be discouraged though, you got some real good stuff in here

Kronos

ahhh! whats with the pale ass scans!?! you'll get more accurate criticism if the images here are closer to the real drawings.....

i don't entirely agree with what Jens says....the big mouth is a cool feature(although not very practical....or for that matter, too possible, but cool none the less). some shading on the neck would be nice though, it almost seems as if the neck is in front of the jaw as there is no shadow on the neck....

anywayz, keep going with them, and sorry about the hassling of the scans, but i see it as pretty important in order to get good criticism...

Your stuff is awesome!

Keep kicking out those anatomy studies! The progress is obvious.

I have to say though, your life studies aren't really up to scartch with your other work. It looks like you're not really patient enough.

Oh and a quick tip with scanning pieces that are too big for one go: scan each half once, making sure that there is plenty of 'extra' visible in both scans. Then assemble them in photoshop. It's actually a lot easier than expected.

whoa, post #91 is one sweet update, can i ask what you are using to do that, it looks like pencil, but its so smooth that it has to be charcoal, is it both?

if you were going to give a gift to the community, you would scan each section and put it together again is PS :D

can't wait to see that one finished, so keep going!

Not sure how far you're willing to take it, but I think you might do well with a little more contrast, that way you can 'rounden' the boobs with a wider tone range.

I'm also sorry for not comment on your sketch book. =[ I should be commenting it on more then I should.

Anyways I think you got the faces down pretty well as in portional wise. You think you should do something different with your face and define the faces more. =/

They look the same. =] Get what I'm saying?

Things like giving your people different charartistic. Like wider noses. Boarder cheeks. Rounder bodies. =/ Bigger eyes. Things like that.

Also you should take a second look at your wrinking and folding. And observe how farbic folds.

you have some nice work. i would definitely use levels in photoshop to get the scans to show up better. next time you scan something hit control L in photoshop and fiddle with the levels a bit. you should be able to add some contrast to the images you have. other than that you have nice work. i like your rendering skills and you are definitely progressing.

I really enjoyed wathcing through your drawings. You've shown a really massive improvement in your rendering skills in quite a short period of time. I especially like the fact that you dont use (at least you dont seem to) blending techniques in your work. Like me you seem to have a tendancy of not finishing your drawings so I maybe would like to see something more thought of and finished.

From first page to last...quite a nice lineup.
Really great grasp of anatomy and physiology. Imaginitive
design on your characters as well.
Your playful use of tone is really refreshing.
A couple of observations..not crits would be that your characters aren't in any extreme perspectives either from above or below. Might be interesting to see you experiment with extreme foreshortening. Also the enviros and animal studies you have are few and far between. I also noticed no color pieces at all.
Do you plan on pushing the sphere of your work into these areas?
One small crit would be that your compositions need a bit of work Eye flow is the key. How do people read the picture and how much do you help them do that by setting up visual cues.
Other than that...Can't wait to see more.
Cheers!

Here's a small update. Didnt get time to do what i want. Im almost out of paper, i'll have some more tomorrow. This weekend should be better :)
Here are some characters

Ganbat-Bad and thegreypencil: Im glad you like 'em, they took quite some time to be executed. I pretty much had some fun doing them :=)
Inkfish: THanks, i'll do my best :)
Helzon: Thanks alot sir! Your crit helps alot :) ! I havent work alot on perspective on the characters cause i havent included them in scene which would involve it. But i'll do some to see how it looks like.
And about the other subjects, well, i prefer doing things completely before jumping to other stuff. I sometimes do some, but never go too far from normal characters. And the colors, well first off, i like my pencil :), but seriously, i havent other tools. Life is kinda hard here :S
Anyway, thanks alot for the crits :D

well funs what its all about no :)

hey some crits:

- the right shoulder looks a lil strange im not sure what it is right now, could be my myopia but thats a thought.

- is the sabre attached to the spike pauldron on his right arm? for is it held by an obscured hand? it looks like you resolved it with the current simple shapes in a fit of convenience.

hope it helps!

hey there!

hmm the WIP looks to be excting :)

sometimes its hard to get out of an idea rut, but i think its always best to ignore the feeling of DREAD AND DOOM(TM) hehe.

=just relax and duke out some old poses and doddle some
-then go put your shoes in the character you're gonna draw, and think about his/her intentions.
-next think of the actions said character's going to effect in order to fulfil said intentions ( eg..damn im feeling hungry, im a vampire so im going to leap down this 2nd storey balconey and bite that hobo's head off)
-now play the action sequence in side view in your head and freeze it any any point you wish to be drawing.
-now...like some crazy matrix cam, rotate your perspective all about the character and decide on a viewpoint.

well...thats how i would do it anyway :)

hope it helps!

Nice, I like your anatomy, and your understanding of form seems pretty good. The shading is nice. The low contrast could use a boost, but I'm assuming it's the scanner.

As for constructive criticism, I'd be interested in seeing some work from you with heavily contrasting line thickness. Some long, "swooshy" lines would be very cool. Maybe a blind contour too? :)

Keep it up, and thanks for your critique.

Youīve got a cool pencil style. I think that youīd get to next nevel if you trusted more on your skills to render volumes just with strokes. (I know it isnīt easy, Iīm not very much of a pencil drawer, but you seem to get along with them very well)
Iīve jumped from the first page to the 4th... and I can see a progress. Keep up!

I really like everything you've got going on here. Your imagination is pretty great. You know what you're doing.

As a critique though, I'd say that I'd like to see you do a few things. The first is using a different medium. Pen. Color pencil. Digital paint. Different paper. Etc. I just want to see what you would do with something else other than pencil. THe other thing is I'd like to see how you could play with your line work more. Whether its intentionaly drawing looser in terms of your line work, or drawing sharper in terms of line quality. I like all your stuff, and you've clearly got your handle on things, I just want to see more!

Great work, I'll be checking back.

I hear you on the legs man :D I know part of your style is laying those pencils on to build them up, but it would be sweet to see some of these sketches done with harder lines. Also some of your anatomy could be exaggerated in places to make things more dynamic - your arms especially tend to keep the same width too much. Lovin' those hand studies, construction of the bottom right one on that page is nice! Moremoremore

Nice as always but the drawing of the buttand legs feel a bit flat.
Yuor characters always have so coolness to them.

Just hadda pop in and say your first page is great, with a very nice sense of structure (I'd say your figures have a very "sculptural" feel to them) and I really like the anatomy studies, but seeing the difference from first page to last is very inspiring. You've still got that solid, sculptural feel but have added to that an increased line & form sensitivity... yoh, very inspiring.

I gotta sketch more...

Tenelaus: haha, thanks ! i see what your talking about :) those studies where pretty quick ones, didnt took time to give some importance to the lines. About the muscles, well, i think i should go get that Hogarth book :x

Nice stuff going on man, I really like it when you use geometric shapes to break up the faces/compositions.
