Hello, I am a first time poster here at conceptart.org. I was googling random art schools + keywords and somehow landed here, of which I am so happy to have found. Finally, I don't feel so alone in the "taking a risk and going into the arts career which is what really makes me happy" boat. <3! Ok I will cut the crap...ok w/ more probably more crap. :$

I graduated highschool this year and I'm currently off school and off everything basically trying to figure my life out (talk about pressure!!, now i know why people aged around this life period kill themselves the most haha). Ok I know for sure I want to get into art & design, but at this point still have no idea which specific path to take. I love so many! (IE. Photography, Graphic Design, etc.) ANYWAY, so thanks to this forum I found out about Sheridan Institute's Art Fundies Program. At this point, I am as well nowhere near in possession of a solid portfolio and feel something like Art Fundies will not only help me start and build an excellent portfolio, but also give me the feel of which path really suits me and might like to pursue.

THING IS, I live all the way in East Scarborough and commute would totally be anal! Cost and time wise. =(

.:THE REAL POINT OF THIS POST:
Are there any other schools in the GTA that offers a similar "fundamentals" program as Sheridan's Art Fundies, which is very art broad and essentially focal to building a portfolio, enhancing skills and basically getting a feel of different art paths???

While I'm at it, what would you advice a person (ME) who has no portfolio pieces in existence (seriously zero), who wants to get into an art & design school, and has a whole year of free time?

After thinking long and hard about it I figured my best bet is above, but please feel free to toss in any advice, ideas, suggestions, recommendations, ANYTHING! I know I want to go into art because throughout my highschool years (of which the last 3 I slacked off bad) the only subject I really and truly enjoyed the most and excelled in without much effort is ART. Nonetheless, my past art creations are either still with my teachers, disintegrated or M.I.A, because up until recently I really thought I wanted to be a nurse...but for all the wrong reasons, so I never bothered to keep any masterpieces (if any, haha) safe at hand or anything like that.

In the long run, what I DO plan to get into either OCAD, or the York/Sheridan joint program.

SO PLEASE! I AM BEGGING YOU. ANY DR. PHIL'S OUT THERE, I know you probably don't give two shit about a stranger's pre-mid-life crisis, but any comments, ANY at all will be very and much appreciated!!! Thank you sincerely.

I am soo sorry if I totally wrote an ISU here, I AM JUST SOO CONFUSED AND IN NEED OF HELP! Thanks again! :)

It's great that you've got the ambition to start your fundamentals!

I don't know what kind of work environment you need, but if you're good at getting stuff done at home, I would highly suggest that you take teh time to read through Andrew Loomis' book, available for free at http://www.saveloomis.org/successfuldrawing/successfuldrawing.htm

It gives an objective and wholesome look at art fundamentals essential for a drawing to be sucessful.

As for art schools, I can only recommend talking to your high school college councelor and do extensive research on the internet. Any decent and worthwile art school will have a website with all teh info you need.

Good luck!

Alex.
