Sketchbook Support Group Digest

This thread is a supplement to the Sketchbook Support Group (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=42234&page=1&pp=60) that was formed out of desire of some of the members to get more critiques and advices in order to improve their work. In exchange for regular commenting in other peoples sketchbooks we would get c&a in our sketchbooks in return. This is a place for everyone who is in an SSG to post what they consider their best sketch that week in a single thread. That way we can all keep up on what everyone from all of the SSG's are doing. This is not a pure DSB but MikeCorriero has approved. Critting other peoples work is highly encouraged and appreciated even if you are not a member of the SSG's.

As its sunday, ive picked my best.

Being this set of ship designs...

http://www.andydesign.co.uk/october2005/sketch6.jpg

Odds, i think the form of your is really good. But the feature placement makes it loook very odd and unrealistic. Ie. the low eyes, also some of the very bumby face.

Looking forward to more of the best sketches.

Hey, this thread is a great idea!
Here's mine for this week. Self portrait with willow charcoal:
http://www.projectsole.ca/gallery/albums/userpics/charme.jpg

Talmir - looking good, nice and loose. I agree with the comment about the other side of the face though, could use a touch up.

Odds - Yours look good, too. But either you scanned it in skewed, or the back of the head and the ear are too squished.

PHATandy - Those are really sweet ship designs. Concept-wise, I'm unsure as to the purpose of some of them, but they look badass anyway. :)

darkwolfb87 - Perspective and design seem correct, but the rendering is a bit messy. Composition-wise, I would have preferred that the ship were bigger and moved a tad to the left.

This thread is a great idea!
Talmir- Great job describing the form, but the perspective and proportions could use a little work, like the placemenent of the left eye for example.
Odds- Nice job on the exaggeration, but some of the parts just look off. The shape of the head, for example, makes it look really flat and boring, some shading and more basic shapes could push this along farther.
PHATandy- I really love some of the designs on these (top left) and the use of perspective is good, but in some parts not consistant. It seems the non-flat shapes are the most trouble, such as on the top-right one the front looks like its on a completely diffrent plane then then back.
Darkwolfb87- I like the choice of perspective and the design of this piece, but the "entrance" and the ceiling look very flat. Its difficult to tell whats going on in some parts of the image.
SirGreenSock- I like your shading in this piece, but the arm is so short :S . Good work on the textures and on the form though.

Heres mine for the week. Rip me a new one :needle:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v612/odds/s266.jpg

PHATandy; nice. that's all.
darkwolf; nice perspective, but towards the vanishing point, the structures get kind of confusing.
sirgreen; cool, although his arm is much too small and head much too big. lovin' the loose rendering.

Odds- Very nice, I like the rendering but the nose is huge. You used some really hard lines that make it look unrealistic like where the neck meets the chin. The ear looks almost like its in profile view and the lips are a bit small.
Pixel- Too scratchy! The shading is extremely dark and on some parts unreadable. I like the design but some of the anatomy and shading could really use work (particularly on the face).
My best this week, I kinda skipped out on it a bit too early.

Sirgreensock ~ Looks good, but I think the sholders should be broader and the
upper part of the arm looks a little short.

lightkitar ~ Looks great. the only sugestion that I have is to add another color for highlighting and like 2 more colors for the darkest part of the shading. the proportions are good and the colors that are there are good, It just seems to be lacking a little depth

odds ~ the blue one, the proportions are excelent. I have one suggestion and one question. first is the question. why is only some of it blended? I can't seem to find a pattern in where and why it is done where it is. and the suggestion is that behind the top of the head, the shading next to the head seems a little sloppy. I would like to see it either absent or more simmilar to what is in front of the head. I really like it though

Odds : That looks well done, I'd recommend you spend some more time on it and make it really kickass :)

LightKirtar : Nice study, seems very accurate. Good job. No real crits from me.

Asoir : Nice drawing, but watch out for the construction of his head. It seems a bit warped.. What is that yellow stuff at the top left of the image?

bengonzalez : Nice concept, but his arms look rather "uncomfortable". The shading on his face looks a little smudged. But good job.

Skethin "D" : Damn sir. That aint no sketch :P Looks like a finished drawing too me. I have no crits, great job.

PHATandy : Looks good, nice feel to it. But his mace seems to be bent in the middle. His waist seems too narrow and his legs too long. But it seems stylized so if thats your intention. Bravo.

Good job to the rest of you.

Mine is not 2D, But its a concept, and it is technically a sketch.. and it is my best of the week..
so here ya go. :)

Thanks for all the crits everyone! I did another self-portrait with willow charcoal this week, I think it turned out way better.

http://www.projectsole.ca/gallery/albums/userpics/oct-33.jpg

Talmir - Thats a really interesting design! How long did it take?

PHATAndy - The sketch looks good, but I feel the colouring needs more work. The shadows need to define more details in the form (such as the folds/wrinkles) and the lighting should give more hint to the materials(the metallic arm should look more like metal, right now it is treated in a similar way to the cloth, except for a few highlights)

Skethin "D" - Looks really good, but I wish it was bigger so I could see it better.

http://67.15.131.24/~hkamix12//drawings/only%20one.jpg

this is one i made this week... or.. last week? whoops. I just wanted to show .

Sir Green Sock: I do love the expression and how he is looking striaght at you, but I would love to see more values, and watch out for the way the arm is possitioned.

Talmir: Nice vehicle. im a sucker for those! Maya or 3dmax??

PHATandy: Hah! It seems like one of those people you fight in rpgs, the soldier A type of guy. Cool stuff. Just watch out for the form of the face, it is a little bit squashed in. make sure to draw the forms underneath first and everything above second. The right hand seems a bit odd, but aside from that a good sketch!

Cool stuff, cool stuff.

That's no sketch that shit is done man. It looks good, very nice rendering for a study it works but the muscles on her back look like they are from a female body builder was she that cut?

PHATandy

Nice concept. The hands are suffering a little. I looks like no reference was used for them.

Talmir
nice work on the modeling. I don't know how much work goes into something like that but it looks mean as shit.

SirGreenSock

Nice SP. I like the expression and how you managed to show the hand pressing against the skin.

Iconophobian

Crazy sketch. I love the look of the little guy and the rendering is well done. this thread was definitely a good idea and it help to promote the SSGs. Also check out the SSG vs SSG Thunderdome Challenge (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=55515&page=1&pp=10).

I´m gonna comment on all pics since my last post in order. Some artists have two or more comments here :)

SirgreenSock : Nice self portrait, it shows good attention to detail. The jetrod design took me a week to finish.

Iconophobian : I love this drawing style. So controlled and well thought out imo. Is it a troll? The software I use is Max.

Bengonzalez : He looks kinda stiff. The pose gives me the feeling he just stopped for a second but is itching to go out and kick some ass. The face is a wee bit flat though.

Sirgreensock : Nice drawing of a spellsword? very dynamic.. I like it alot.

Koshime : Nice environment. I like the palette you used. I can imagine this existing somewhere :)

Trevor : She looks sexy, but I wouldnt want to meet her :P Very good.

Bengonzales : Those faces look a little "off".. kinda skewed.. nice sketches but need a little work.

And finally, my best of the week:

trevor man.. the design is real cool (not sure if it makes any sense... would she fall over... thats a big hand.. :S ) the glowing hand is ace.

Talmir looks good.. but i think the skin tones... are just to yellow and make it seem funny. A slight more pinky, or just tanned color will make it a bit more realistic. nice one though.. the face is great, nice expression.

Thanks for the crits on mine aswell. Theres a few probelms.. gonna work into other pieces.

please do check out (and maybe even crit, or comment) my pieces... it's a very lonely thread.

anyhow

quick critiques, hooray!

bengonzales: I have a certain love for dutch angles, but make sure to watch out for your perspective when you do draw it. Think of his body parts as spheres, cubes and cylinders. That way it should be easier to visualize the perspective on it.

Kronos: Hah! it looks like a really angry dwarf. Not bad!

Marjolein: I like this cartoon. It really makes me feel...apathetic!

darkwolfb87: very nice lines. I visualize it with light and shadow, and color too! Very nice. I would love to see more!

talmir: Sorry for taking so long to reply, but thank you. I guess you could say it's a troll. When i drew it i was thinking of some lonely creature finding comfort in something beautiful. I guess it does look like a troll. Your 3d work is amazing. Im learning maya, and with my knwoledge of art and form i still can't get anything worthy.

Heres the best of last week, self portrait which came as the result of a long session of master studies figuring out some issues I had with rendering...
http://www.projectsole.ca/gallery/albums/userpics/apr116.jpg
Stine- Nice, like the blue pencil. Dont be afraid to kick the contrast up more though, develop more form in the shadows.
Kresh - Cool design, dont be so reliant on using white in all the highlights. You wouldnt do it in paint and you shouldnt in pencil either.
Recursive_End - One of my favorites of your recent works, one thing that bugged me is that the shapes on the left guy's face dont follow the form as well as the other guy's, look rather flat.

GreenSock: I like the feel of the SP. The rendering looks quick and has a lot of movement to it. I just want to ask how old are you. I'm going with 18+. If you don't have a baby-face then it looks like you used a pic from when you were a kid. I'm not sure if I'm right but your eyes may be positioned too high and you haven't given enough room for the nose. Edit: I'm really stomped on what bothers me about it. but it feels like you squished the proportions on the face.

GrayPencil: Very nice. Quick bold lines and the shading captures the form of the body. The lighting of your Photo is the only thing that i can crit on this. Try and use a brighter light source.

So then this is me for my best recent sketch about 20-30 minutes on each of these ref studies.

awesome landscape. I don't know if you'll agree with me but don't you think with llandscapes, the best way to approach it is to stay loose and keep only the edges and colors/values in mind? not so much on the shapes since nature is very organic.

I'm surprise this thread only has 2 pages since it's a very good idea.
Kind of a like a big class and the individual SSG's are the.....individual groups.

darkwolf - great landscape, next time pay attention to use the value range in your composition, generally make the foreground darker for more depth, although the other way around can also create good focus.

supperman - nice car, get rid of the blue lines, makes it look unfinished!

master 25 days - Like the girl, has nice attitude to her. 2 things i noticed is that the shadow from her right heel is too high up, and her right shoulder seems a tad detached, bring it closer into the body.

@SirGreenSock: great drawing but i think that there could be more contrast - it mostly seems midtones right now. also everything seems well shaded except for the weapon, which probably should have sharp highlights (even if you're using a ref just use your artistic license). it doesn't seem like you've saved the paper either, it looks quite smudgy in some areas - it'd look more professional if some of those areas were cleaned up.

@talmir: the neck is a bit long, but otherwise nice, i like the colors.

it seems like everyone draws a really good finished piece while mine are just sketches ^^

best of mine this week:

that's a very well done sketch hpslash, what kind of phone is that? you draw cute girls well. are you going to the sketchgroup this sunday? I totally overslept so I had to go to 1 oclock mass. The fingers should converge toward the middle finger

sirgreensock: thx for the good eyes. I see a similiar problem in your drawing as well. The right upper arm is too long and the left arm is too short overall. I'm not sure how he can hold the weapon like that either. I think overall the composition would benefit if the weapon is leaning on his shoulder with his right hand in a lowered position so it's not cutting up the space between the girl and him so much.

@Kresh: Haha I never get sick of you either. do you work from dark to light? anyways i always think the way you handle light and colors are freaking awesome *sighs* from the eyes to the top of the head looks a bit long but i don't think you were going for perfect human anatomy ^^

@Master 25 Days: i've actually gone twice to the sketchgroup but very late and no one was there >.< so i suppose i'll call ahead this time to make sure haha. i suppose as long as both of us are there it'll make a "group".

i forget what kind of phone it is on the top of my head...isn't it the humongous nokia phone that comes free and that everyone had like...5 yrs ago? My brother offered me a razor before they were popular and i was like, "nah, i guess i don't need it", so he sold it on ebay for several hundred dollars. :dead:btw i drew from a mirror but i'll watch the fingers next time.

best from last week
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/3773/elenastroke4bu.jpg

hpslash: yeah I was going to get a razr but then I saw my friend took one out, and my other friend took one out, then some random guy took one out. I went to one of my friend's house, he just got the mail and guess what, it's a razr phone.

talmir: cool sketch. YOu gotta be careful how you draw the features from the bottom angle. We should see more nostril, less lower lip, more upper lip.

Favorite of this week, see you in Montreal!

3CH : An insane cyberpunk character riding a squid beside a plane carcass...

Talmir - nice style going on, watch the nose and eyes in relation to the structure of the rest of the head, getting skewed in there.

hpslashluvr - I like the sketch, the face has personality. Watch your hatching a bit more though, try to suggest the form as well as value, most of it seems ot be going in the same direction instead of descriving the form.

kresh - great sketch, love the moodiness. WOuld have liked to see it more finished, aside from the head the form is very unclear everywhere else, which makes it look unrefined.

master 25 days - love the colours and character! I think something is wrong with the placement of the head/shoulders/neck, maybe the clavicle should be defined or the back of the necklace to show the neck wrapping back around.

DarbusMaximus - Like the dog, watch the anatomy and proportions though, the snout seems misaligned compared to the eyes or vice versa.

the only problem i see with that sketch is that maybe you could push the darks...there is a lot of midtones right now.

darktwin: sweetness man. push more darks like hp said. Eyebrows should be higher, and his right nostril should be in shadow.

HP: very moody sketch, full of life. You could use more darks for her nose. The shading on the arms are a little too harsh.

PHATandy; nice. that's all.
darkwolf; nice perspective, but towards the vanishing point, the structures get kind of confusing.
sirgreen; cool, although his arm is much too small and head much too big. lovin' the loose rendering.
i like u work. it looks esthetic. The light is great.

Great stuff in here! An SSG Digest is a great idea. Here's ny best recent img from my sketchbook.

SGSock: Great images! There's a lack of definition by his ear and eye that's bothering me though.

HP: Your characters shading looks good. It seems like a very young face (eyes are wide). Curious though...why memorize shading?

I apologize if this is the wrong place for this, I didn't want to make a new thread with the sketchbooks to ask this. The question is about the requirements if any to make a sketchbook thread. It appears that there are no requirements, but I want to make sure before I try making one.

I would say this is my best piece of the week. Still not finished yet because it is for the workshop at CGTALK and posting wips as i go along. This week has been full of deadlines so this is all I have other than the Brush tutorial I posted in the same thread.

Hi, I'm pretty new here. I created a sketch thread but have had no reply for 3 hours now, and I can't see my thread... how long does it normally take to get your thread aproved?

I read the FAQ, but it does not indicate the basic requirments and time allocation for creation of threads. Sorry if this is in the wrong place.
