This first group of work is a collection of fairly recent sketches. Thanks for any comments!

Thanks sly! Here's some studies I did this week from Giovanni Civardi's book, "Drawing Human Anatomy". Not really sure who this guy is, but his work is pretty good and its one of the only anatomy books I have. Need to buy some Hogarth and Loomis I think...

Asgauardian, cheers man! I hear what you are saying about rendering, its something I am looking at more closely now.

Heartbeat, Thanks! and they are all from my head

Sve, they are pretty interesting choices. Especially the arctic carnivore, I dont like it at all. :) But I suppose most or all artists end up not liking some of their work, especially old stuff.

Happy new year!

From the last post - revised, but only worked on it for about another few minutes, bringing the foreground foreward. I got bored with it after that:

@d@m!
I am really liking what you've got goin on here. I've actually seen your work several times in the C.o.w., e.o.w. and i.d.o.w. threads... it's cool to see your bringing that level of participation. i need to stop being so lazy! anyways... here are the crits.

on the pencil / paper stuff: try to keep your pencil sharp... looks like it's getting a little dull and that your drawings are becoming a little muddy because of it. just try and do it every so often... maybe like every 2-5 minutes or something. it's very important. the bottom sketch here is my favorite: http://images5.theimagehosting.com/new4.7.jpg

on the digital paints: In this one http://img494.imageshack.us/img494/7854/35xp.jpg the levels are just about right....... seems like in some of the others they are kind of murky or muddly. don't be afraid to get into some insane detail in one or two areas of the composition. after the whole thing is done you should maybe play with variations or curves to try and get the entire color scheme a little more realistic.

yAdam
January 6th, 2006, 12:55 PM
Thanks for the crits guggen! My aim with the digi paints is to start getting to a better level of detail as well as concentrating on quickly painting scenes, like mood paintings.

That pencil/paper picture that you said was your favourite is actually biro. But i'm interested in why you thought it was the best, I mean, to me I have improved quite a bit since then, even though it wasn't that long ago, and in my eyes the pencil work i posted this week is far better than that... Not saying that it can't be your favourite, just wondered why :^^: ..

The most recent stuff as well, has been done with a tech pen (0.5) so i dont need to sharpen that... and since the end of november i've had an electronic pencil sharpener...Interesting...

k..... i'll try to explain a little better:) http://myspace-710.vo.llnwd.net/00365/01/77/365167710_l.jpg is a different kind of drawing from the more recent ones you've been posting. when i look at it it seems that you were working in a fast kind of way. it seems like you could have drawn one or two of these little studies within maybe 15-25 minutes. It's really cool because they seem so imaginative and have such depth, but they're such quick studies. I really like the improvisation there... it's part of why your speedpaints have been improving i think. I see this kind of drawing ... which is basically a thumbnail, or even a gesture as a different kind of genre of drawing from something like this: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/yAdam1/tribeppl3.jpg.

the tribe studies are of good quality, but the pencil work doesn't seem quite as confident somehow. I think that http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/yAdam1/tribeppl2.jpg is good in the in initial layout and in the anatomy, but that the halftones where you have basically cross hatching seems to have some shading just to be shading. how long did these take you to do??? this one : http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/yAdam1/misc.jpg seems particularly good in it's spontaniety... but yet it's a finished drawing.

keep up the great work! hope this helps!

Thanks again! this has helped a lot. I assume the link you posted was supposed to be of that biro sketch you liked.. not of a woman dreaming of bob ross.. hehe! But I can see what you mean.

I can definately see, in the tribeppl2 page, what you are talking about (it took me about 45 minutes in total). I think it comes down to not fully understanding the form. I have been trying to improve my shading/rendering..I always did it in finished stuff, but I used to only do line sketches. I can see the way it look a bit jittery and haphazard, especially on the ones you posted, so I suppose the confidence will come with time...

Your environments in particular are quite amazing.

As for sketches of people, I would recommend focusing on shadows more than details. For instance, don't draw any lines at all for eyes/noses, instead add shadows, to show the typography of the face. This not only makes sketches look a lot better, but it will help develop your lighting skills as well.

On another note, with oils, try what's called 'imprematura.' What you so is take a TON of turpentine/turpenoid, or whatever you do to make paints thin (do NOT use oil), and a little bit of brown, burnt sienna/umber, etc. Any earthy color will do.

Anyways, lightly and smoothly do a wash over your canvas, until it's all lightly brown. This will allow you to add white without messing things up.

After it's dried for 4 or so days (I prime a lot of canvases at a time) you begin to paint on it. But paint in brown/burnt sienna/umber only. This will be the base painting. You're using turpentine only with this. This is the most important stages, make sure that it's as detailed as the finished painting. When you use turpentine you're able to get extremely fine details, since it's much thinner than linseed oil. Also, if you make a mistake, you can dip a rag in turpentine and wipe away your errors. It's the ONLY way to paint, and it's what all of the old masters did. I read about this technique about a month ago, and it's made my oil paintings infinitely better.

Anyways, after you finish your base painting, allow a long time to dry, or else the painting will warp after a few years. Then you can either add more depth/detail using brown and turpentine, or you can start layering the paint on, using oil to mix with the paint. Do THIN coats, and I mean thin. Take your time, don't add too much color in one layer, or else it will look muddy and sloppy. Keep edges clean, and just keep building up layers, allowing 3-5 days of dry time in between each one. This way you can always fix your mistakes, and the painting will look very refined. The layering also gives it a REALLY cool effect.

If you do this, your oil paintings could look as good as your photoshop work.

Anyways, keep up the good work.

Wow these landscapes really are pretty spectacular. The penicl ones feel kinda like Alan Lee's! Keep up with the model sessions, it seems I used to make the biggest strides when I could go to them regularly. For the quicker poses, try and get the whole gesture down as quickly as possible, then go in and pop detail/tone. Course that's easier saud than done I know. George Pratt used to have us do 5 second gestures! All about connecting the eye and hand as well as possible. Lookin forward to more!

yAdam
February 26th, 2006, 04:59 PM
Cheers Andy, I'll definately have a go at doing 5 second gestures..(and quicker gestures in general)

A 30 or 40 minute speed paint..I realise I dont do much in the way of vehicles or transport designs, so I think i'm gonna get into that some more...sometime..

and I think this is finished now...

Shinryu, thanks!

Got a quite a few wips on the go that aren't worth posting, I don't know why I started so many...Finally got around to finishing the portrait thats somwhere up the page a bit...Well, i'm sure I could go on with it, but my confidence with oils isnt that great still, so I'd probably end up going too far and destroying it.... Not the greatest photo either..

Hey there, man. I was just dwelling on how pitiful my sketchbook is still, and realized I've yet to thank you for commenting in it, and returning the favor. So here goes. On your non-colored sketches, try pushing to increase your value range. As an excersize, take a piece of paper, grid paper, or plain white paper and draw a grid, maybe 10x10, and in the first (verticle) row, make a value range of 10, and in each verticle row increase the range by one, try to end with a scale of 20 distinct values from near white to black/as near to black as you can get. It will be tough, I still can't quite get that far, but it's good practice nonetheless, eh? anyway, keep it up man! Great stuff. One more thing you may want to try is to minimize the amount of outlining you do your hand drawings, try to imply the lines through shading if you can.

hey man i really like some of those character concepts for the chow. one crit on your paintings though, the colours that you are using are really intense and are very rare in real life, just try desaturating them a bit and your on the money whilst keeping in mind diffusion.

The grass isnt always greener on the other side it can look blue at night time.

Trying to relax and clear my mind with a still life, done digitally. I realised its much more relaxing to paint stuff like this with proper paints. I got really annoyed with this after about 5 hours, so I just left it like this...

The latest still life is looking so vibrant, for a moment there I thought it was done with paints, lol . The pot in the middle is definately the strongest point, the bit to the left looks a bit neglected, but I think that probably this isnt entirely finished. The folds in the blue cloth could probably be portrayed a little better, but overal its looking really good.

Looking good! I especially like the lighting you've chosen for your self-portrait.

In your digital sketches, maybe you could break up some of the surfaces in a sublte way by introducing more texture, rather than just round brush strokes?

Your self portrait is coming along nicely too. It looks like you!

Hey adam, nice work. Like your variety. Cool sense of armour design.
I'm gonna crit on the only thing i really have knowledge.
On your enviros keep an eye on your saturation. Either saturate in the light, or in the dark. Not both. Also saturation lessens the furthur away an object is. This is due to the amount of atmosphere you are looking through being greater... Kim will probably ramble to about this for about 2 paragraphs. But anyway, this graduation will add a lot more depth.
Otherwise the values are pretty solid.
BIGGER HANDS.
Safe, hopefully see you in Londonium.

Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for the comments about my environments, need to do more interiors though.
I will definately try to get more texture into my paintings. The 2 most recent wips dont have much in just 'cause I only really started them, but in the speedpaints I generally forget about it, or its the last thing I think about. So thats gotta change.. I think it's part of my work flow more than anything, and my obsession with using the round oil pastel brush....Need more experimenting..

Thanks badger, I usually keep that in mind when doing stuff (now at least). Also over the last month things like that have sort of been clicking a lot more, as in, i'm now starting to understand whats supposed to happen with light and colour properly....

Slightly dodgy pic, and legs on the woman are a bit too out of proportion.
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/2334/231pt.jpg

Nearly there with this now. That last photo was pretty horrible... it was taken at night so my crap yellowy light in my room mucked it up..which meant I tried to play around with curves...Here's the latest progress. just finished about an hour ago.. One eye is slightly lower than the other, so I better sort that out.. other than that I quite like it.
