my undertanding of the story (so far) is that some green creature is carrying this girl up to some place in the sky via a wooden pole.

SpeeDFX has it right.

This is a victim or an adept of some sort being dragged into the sky, up the Witch Towers, for horrible horrible reasons, where horrible horrible things will be done to her.

Also, the towers would be invisible to your average person. You have to have the right eyes to see them.
