[ Okay, I don't wanna overload people with the sci-fi or robot thing... ]

[ ... so something inspired by the recent image capture of a giant squid in its environment. ]

[ Oh... ]

[ ...If you've got an idea for a deep-sea creature, other than a shark, that you've just gotta get out of your system... then do that instead. ]

[ "R.O.V." means Remotely Operated Vehicle ]

Deep-Sea Discovery: UNKNOWN SPECIES OF SHARK IS ILLUMINATED BY R.O.V.

It's weekend, so I've got some more time. This took not more than 2 hours in Painter. Nah! Not Painter! I usually use Painter, but this time it was Open Canvas almost all the way. This image is 75% of the original size and I think I'll work some more on the right bottom part. Not a shark.

Thanks, Miau. I like the shark concept in your work. Overall the piece has a nice mood and you've got quite an interesting style. I like the spacious feel. As for crit, I think it should be darker in the deep sea and then you could get more out of the "illuminated" part of the topic.

And here's an improved version of mine (not much change but looks better):

An interesting find on the buttom of Ringler's chasm, this new found shark looks like an experiment in evolution, having the characteristics of primitive sharks, as well as some unique features - most notably it's unique tail.
painter, 20-30 min I reckon, rov's are robots :D

Well, this is really my first time making myself limit my time. Not really used to that, so I think it didn't turn out as well as it could have.

Really, the sketch just helped me solidify how the creature survives, stuff like that.

The shark lives mostly around volcanic vents, where the warm water causes bacteria to grow, and creatures eat the bacteria, the shark eats the creatures. A unique digestive system separates gases from the rest of the waste, and keeps an internal bladder full, allowing the shark to sustain the pressures of those depths. The shark has no nostrils (the fumes from the vents are too overwhelming to normal scent) and no eyes, as there's normally not enough light to warrant vision, but instead has evolved sensory stalks. The sensory stalks contain three hundred times the normal nerves that detect electrical impulses, given him more than enough input to make up for any lack of vision or smell.

The mouth is entirely underneath the body, and the shark feeds mostly by skimming the rising hot water, catching loose food. When not around the vents, the shark swims in small circles, mouth open, the bioluminescent nodule near his throat offering too delicious a target to avoid. Feelers around the mouth allow the shark to sense food passing nearby, and a thick row of nerve-laden tendrils run along his spine, providing further input.

Yeah, so that's my shark.

Whew, I sadly didn't do a few day's worth, but now I'm back! (Audience groans)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/Pawige/Underwaterd.jpg

About 2-3 hours, a bit longer than I'd like but I'm pleased with it, so oh well. I would've done something more original but I'm in love with the idea of massive toothy fish. :-P

Morrigana: I can't believe it, I had that EXACT same biolumenecinsent bulb in the mouth idea, but didn't use it. The work isn't too bad for a really time limited piece, though the saturation of color in the background in general is a bit distracting. The fins are a bit ambigious, I can't quite tell how it all works, but they look a little too thick, I think because the shading gets darker around the edges or something.

Adam H.: I love the texturing on the shark, pretty subtle and it looks good. The sub could use a bit more contrast between the parts facing the light and the parts not facing it, as it looks a bit washed out right now. The eye on our right doesn't quite look like it fits into the head as well as the left eye does, maybe it needs a bit more brow shading. I like the wrinkly mouth and eyes.

Hideyoshi: Woah. Very nice, especially for an hour job. It almost looks painted, how do you get those textures?

Will Chill: I like the concept, it looks like a gigantic space whale, not sure if that was your intent but it's what I see. The eye could use some more definition, and maybe a few highlights on the body to show what it's shaped like. The ROV could use some little details like engines or antennas, and the light coming from it is a bit rough looking.

Goran: That is one ugly fish. I like it, nice texture on the skin. Interesting design for the ROVs too. I think the background would be better looking with a bit of texture.

Hamsta: Nice excecution, looks like something somebody might actually discover. Realisting looking lighting.

CrazyHarij: The shark looks really good, but the quality difference between the ROV and the shark is a little off-setting. The shark's lighting looks a little strange too, with the bright light on top and then the two ROV's lights shining onto its bottom. Probably because of the ref.

J. Sudra: Nice! I like the concept here a lot, made me laugh once I looked closer. At first I didn't even notice it, but then I realized that the fish was shining a light back, and the subs had teeth and eyes... The only part I don't really like is the fish's mouth, it just looks odd to me for some reason. (Anyone else agree?)

Miau: Another cool concept, is the ship on the fish's nose a strange protrusion or an actual sunken ship? The round thing (eye?) looks a little funny, though if it isn't meant to be an eye maybe it looks fine. The shark itself looks a little flat, especially compared to the obviously 3D ROV.

Whew, that was a lot of work.

I'm working with a quite slow tempo than it will be only rough sketches ;)

Pawige, they were supposed to be thick. I've just never really worked like this before, and so I kinda messed up on some parts. But it was good practice.

Pawige Some areas of your work are well rendered, particuraly the head of the shark. But something overall bothers me, the composition seems rather standard, not sure what's going on with the shark's body (looks like a cartoonish pose) and the rov is a bit silly speaking frankly about it's design.

Hideyoshi Despite your attempts at motion, there is something static about your pic. Not sure how meaningful this is, but I'm getting a gray vibe from this, maybe I'm just looking for more contrast, or maybe more saturation, it just doesn't seem that deep, I guess.
I like the design of the rov (despite being more of a mini-sub)
and the design of the fish, which looks like an ancient fish, but with a little flair in the form of the double eyes, and red markings.

Hamsta: Yeah, I need to work on my composition skills a lot. The "shark" ended up a lot more like an eel than a shark, and I think I see what you mean about the pose. The ROV, however, was intended to be something similar to this http://www.innespace.com/ but based on a seal. It definitely turned out a bit silly looking.

Thanks for the critique!

Thx for the crit, Hamsta!
I agree more or less. :-)
Good eye on the fish design! I was going for some "Dinichtys" look. It was a prehistoric armoured fish sizing 10 metres, but I guess you know that :-)
