it's great that u're motivated to learn!

first of all, that's a wiggly shaped apple, hehe. the coloring is nice and the highlight appears to have the texture of an apple however the rest of the apple doesn't. it clearly suggests an apple, but it fails to be believeable as a round form. ur core shadow needs to spread out more, it's too concentrated in one area. don't carry it all the way to the edge. It should be darkest opposite of the light source and gradiate to the highlight. it also needs more reflected light, it's what makes a form look round. you're apple looks too flat. Also shadows come in handy, unless u want the apple to appear like it's floating. Study some real life objects and i'm sure you can find some better tutorials on rendering spheres, but here's a quick sphere sketch. It's good to study basic geo shapes to understand form...start out by drawing spheres, cubes, cylinders, and cones. Keep at it! knowledge is nothing without practice.

very cool, the "shaded glow" around the apple some what takes away from the piece.

i dont know what your apple really looked like.. .. if it was all jacked like that or not (hehe).. .but its definitely really good for a first piece. if you were trying to make a perfect apple, yours is off and i agree with what slowpoke said.. .but if you were trying to make something kinda rotten, your shadows are values feasible. do something with the backround.. . .i agree with what davi said. . .it takes away from the piece the way it is now. maybe just a quick cast shadow? either way, nice job
