So far our active members are:
Rodrigo!
Form
Bumskee

Leo (not on the boards)
I KNOW there are lots of sydney peeps out there - please come along, we go on different days and do a wide variety of things - lifedrawing (free and tuition on diff. days), gallery visits, city sketching, drinking beer, collaborating, drinking beer, eating peanuts and drinking beer!
This thread is for all you guys who want to show up to get the details, and for us who are involved to keep ourselves organised and post relevant exhibition info etc.
For anyone interested, please call me. 0438 070 386. No dirty phone talk, mmkay?

I know the notice is quite short, but Adam and me alread sort of planned this sat, unless he's changed his mind. :)
around 12pm ~ 1pm, no doubt there will be shite load of people at circular quay, we might head down to where we went last time, botanical garden? I think it's called around the corner from opera house. Sketch for few hours and head off before getting dark or to "four seasons" for some expensive beer or not.
So please raise your hand if you are interested, Shane's heading up to Stephens sunday I think he said.
As for monday, maybe we do it tuesday this week?? but definitely a day within the long weekend just to be out draw some people.
Min
iolarnula - you can always come down for a visit, two hrs on the train should be fun drawing people... :S you would probably be exhausted when you get off though. hehe..
magic man - :) you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! draw some landscapes and dead kangaroos on the way. mayeb you should plan for three weeks though. :) sometimes I wish australia wasn't so big.. it's so damn big...

I've recently begun to get into sketching and digital painting as a hobby and I think that meeting with like minded people would modivate me to get off my ass and actually get some sketching done.

I am really torn! LOL I really want to meet up with you guys for some sketching and drawing but i also have a deadline i am racing against. What would be the place? I will try really hard to show up to any Arthouse Mondays you guys do, cause i used to go there and i miss it. However i won't be showing up to any pub gatherings, simply because of lifestyle choice (i don't frequent smoke filled places).
Details please! :)
Form
July 3rd, 2006, 08:54 PM
neither, and none of us smoke to my knowledge...
i meant a nice pub, during the day, or anywhere for that matter (that isnt on the pricey side). I would consider arthouse a 'pub' in this case :) Just somewhere relaxed to sit, have a bite to eat, and sketch. No smoky dens necessary.

Oh man i like what i am hearing. this is awesome! Ok so what are people's usual schedule if you have one? I cannot ever do anything on tue or wed arvo's cause i work. The rest of the week is littered with soccer, gym and as much inking/drawing as i can fit in.

I may pop in on Saturdays but otherwise, i'll have to wait till i attend classes next year. :)
rodrigo!
September 22nd, 2006, 02:31 AM
which classes are you doing next year?
sciboy
September 22nd, 2006, 09:01 AM
Probably "Fundamentals of Life Drawing" and "Basic Drawing and Painting" on Saturdays.
Until then i got lots to study, mainly waiting for Vilppu's book to arrive, i'm going to go from front to back on that thing.

K, I do have more info in my email, got it forwarded from my head of faculty at uni (so blame him if it's wrong), but the server's down at the mo. For now here's what I got for ya.
Over 2 days (Friday 30th March/Saturday 31st March), at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour. Lineup not finalised yet but includes Dave Kinsey, James Jean, Jonathan Zawada, Marmalade (some magazine name), Tiffany Bozic, Motion Theory, Mike O'Meally, Si Scott so far. I'm not sure on the cost of tickets yet, heard it was $70, but i'll get back to you once I check my email. Looks like there's another 4 people coming as well, not sure who they are, but so far there's a mix of illustrators/artists, photographers, designers and stuff.
http://www.semipermanent.com/sydney/sydney.html has it all a bit more coherently, hehe.

nula tell them that arthouse is shithouse for lifedrawinghouse , ashtons is far superior! better lighting, better models...pay $12 but since youre "obliged" to buy drinks at the art house you might as well just go ashtons! plus at art house you have a crap view with no easels. no good i say!!!
maybe sketching around all day then life drawing somewhere at night for the sketchcrawl? I'm definitely keen!
PUMPED FOR semi permanent and kassssaan what a week!!
Marcatili
January 30th, 2007, 06:18 AM
Hey guys, unfortunately I can't afford to go to semipermanent being the cliche'd starving art student that I am so I am definitely interested in this sketchcrawl concept or else just resurrecting (or starting a new) Sydney sketch group.
From memory Form and alti, two of the guys that were meeting up before have moved elsewhere (correct me if i'm wrong) and I know Form was a big instigator for the old get togethers.
So basically what I'm asking is are there any Sydney artists that want to start getting together on a regular/semi-regular basis to sketch. I know Ashton's has been suggested and that a couple of people are regulars there so that could be the easiest option. Otherwise I don't see it being too difficult to organise less formal activities (or activities that aren't life drawing based).
It can't hurt at least to touch base with some other Sydney based artists and exchange ideas. Any thoughts?
rodrigo!
January 30th, 2007, 06:52 AM
definitely thinking that some of us could get together on a weekend-day, eg. like sunday...maybe do some drawing around interesting places maybe get some hobos to sit, lol i dunno.
Life drawing of nudes is great and all..but it is $12... but then again I do know the best nights to go :] (since some weeks im there every night lol)
maybe an afternoon eg. like start 1-2 ish then go to ashtons around 6-9 then drinks after!
hmm dunno, any ideas? theres not many of us left. unless some of the people out of town get trains in ;)

January 30th, 2007, 08:08 AM
Well where's some good spots to visit? Near my place there's the Oxford Falls Waterfalls if you're looking for a hike and Warriewoods Wetland Walk, which by the way is only cool cause it's overgrown and has that whole vibe to it but too short for a full day out. But yeah I reckon we should set a day of the week to hang out if we can. I'm open for all days although Sundays can be a pain due to public transport in my area becoming largely non-existent, I could just get my license though. ;)
Marcatili
January 30th, 2007, 08:24 AM
At the rate it takes to get a license in NSW you wouldn't be able to make it for another half decade!
I live in Newtown so I can get into the city anytime, no problem. Personally I think somewhere around the city is best just because it tends to be the most accessible transport-wise. There's always something worth drawing even in 'uninteresting' places.
As far as I know, i'm free the rest of this week and most of next if anyone is busting to get this rolling.
So rodrigo, which are the best nights at Ashtons anyway? Can you just turn up and pay your $12 and go for it? From memory that doesn't include tuition of any kind right?
Also, what is this Kassan thing, I can't find any info online...
*edit* Oops, the questions about Ashtons have already been asked and answered...

David, where can we get info on your workshop in Byron?
Ill most probably be at Semi-Permanent also, sketchcrawl sounds good.
For serious lifedrawing, u cant beat JA but for a few drinks with buddies while drawing, get in early at the Arthouse- real early.
I'm not sure if there are any spots open, but you can email Tricia at loveis@internode.on.net, she is doing all of the logistics so I get to just show up. :)

I am, Min is too...think Min also knows one or two other peeps who are going as well. As far as I know the speakers only speak on one day, but they don't tell you what days, so I got a "cheapo" student 2 day ticket. Might wanna hurry though cos the cheap early ticket prices stop on 1st March and then are like $100 more pricey :/
Is anyone also still interested in Sketchcrawl on St Paddy's Day?

Okay, it looks like there'll be a group in Sydney this coming Saturday (March 17) - http://www.sketchcrawl.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1775 - starting from Circular Quay, a good point for us people who rely on public transport. Probably at the CityExtra restaurant first off (I'm waiting for my password to come through for the Sketchcrawl forums, so I haven't replied there yet).
Even if you're only round for an hour or so I still reckon it'll be cool. Or we could have our own separate group going, if anyone here's still interested.

hey mates !
Glad to find this thread
I ve been in Sydney since 6 months and am searching for sketchgroups and people with the same passion for art and CGs.
I m already going to the Arthouse Hotel every monday for the lifedrawing session. It's great but not much of digital artists around.
The last post on this thread is a bit old, i hope you guys are still in Syd.
So we can perhaps organize something in the city.

I want to start to gain a good network between webdesigners, programers, conceptartists and 3d animators, i have basic knowledge of all areas but i'm not the best an either.
I saw you at the group form, tried to wave but you were watching other stuff, anyway i'm pretty sure u wouldve seen me there.
I believe that if we as sydney artists can link together aswell as create a good network from us to related industries then theirs a good chance for us to increase our prosperity.
does anyone know other groups, like sydney web/graphic design groups?
i know theres a few it'd be good to have a massive gathering of like 20 ppl or somethin from various design areas.

daz i was looking out for you, but didnt see you... where were you sitting? i was with oyo my roommate (the bigger dude) and a guy from julian ashtons (a skinny pale dude). I havnt been to arthouse for a week or two, too busy with work.
There is a small network growing in sydney, its not amazing as yet but more and more people are linking up each month. Networking here seems to be quite organic, random, and disjointed as a lot of people use different methods of connection. Best is to start where you are. We are slowly turning Deans in Kings Cross into a better known place to connect with like-mindeds. Its probably the most relaxed atmosphere and chill spot in sydney (city). Every second tuesday they have wicked live acoustic music with locals jamming.
Best to start by meeting people you are already in touch with - and work from there. If you want to buzz me my no. is 0438 070 386. Im pretty flat out till next week, but after that we should meet up for coffee or at arthouse and we can talk more...

i am at newtown and needing some sketch action. Don't know if i can make arthouse on mondays as I'm usually being a bit of a trendwhore at 505. Maybe I'll make an exception in future but not today because I'm a little under the weather.
I know several art school types who have been talking about getting a sketch group together too- a few of them are happy to model as well. I might be able to organise a studio space through a friend that would be big enough to house a smallish group. Thats if you wanted to merge with some non CA.org people.

I just arrived back in Sydney a while ago, keen as mustard to get my sketch on. Working week days, and can't attend Art house because I got night class on Mondays. Any of you know another inner city location to art jam? after work is best since I'm working just off King Street close to Art House. Weekends I'm at Freshy Beach.
Tried sketching the bodies on the beach but I just lose concentration after a while and drinking in the sun gets you drunk quickly. then sick.

BIG ARTY PARTY TOMORROW (SATURDAY NIGHT) at my NEW CASA.
Live PAINTING (digital, i think - so we can all have a play!) all night, as well as 4 bands and a dj, a squash court, a manmade beach, a kiddie pool or two, and some projected beach-related movies. All hosted in the coolest pad in the coolest building in the coolest city of SYDNEY NSW AUSTRALIA. Its not too late to book a flight.
DEETS:
APARTAMENTE 308, #342 Elizabeth St SYDNEY - thats right next to central station (too easy!). FEAT. The Phonies, Rappaport, Anklepants, Billy Liar, DJ Jonah. The theme (clearly) is END OF SUMMER - strict dress regulations apply - must be beach-ready. Limited amounts of apparel avail at cloakroom but if we are out, so are you!! so bring your sandy pants and slip slop slaps.
Anyone who wants to join in the live painting is more than welcome. I might even see about hooking up a projected opencanvas with some international guest artists!!! :D

We will do a sketchcrawl during the day - I know some cool urban architecture areas or a few cool spooky parks that would all make for interesting compositions. Then in the PM we can retire to a good late night caffe or pub and do some sketchtrading and have a good jam session.
If you have any questions or ideas give me a buzz - 0438070386 - and please spread the word!

on another note, a studio has just opened up here in hibernian house for 50 a week. I can hold it for my own recommendation for a few days. For anyone who doesnt know what hibernian house is, you dont know what you're missing!
Hit me up if you are keen. Its right opposite central station

Yesterday was a great success :) Thanks to everyone for showing up!
Next time I would like to have some specifically organised things so as suggested, perhaps timing it with a movie premier/art opening/other cultural event would be cool. It was great fun jamming with you and thanks especially to those who went late into the night and partied at Oxford Arts Factory!
Thanks especially to luke (expat) for those evil double tabasco shots. The toilet experience this morning was interesting, to say the least!
Here are some photos and my sketches from the day - lets see yours!

I think we've heard enough about 'interesting toilet experiences' for a while haven't we? :P
On another note, I received this email today from the National Art School in case anyone is interested in attending. I'd go but I gotta work:
"Dear Luke
You are invited to join us in a free lunchtime lecture by National Art School alumnus Guy Maestri, winner of the 2009 Archibald Prize for Portraiture.
Maestri will be the guest speaker at the NAS Art Forum, to be held in the Cell Block Theatre on Wednesday, 18 March 1pm-2pm."
As for future sketch action, how about the zoo? People/animals/cityscapes- something for everyone... except longnecks and flatliners that is.

Ok everyone sorry it took me a bit, but here is the details for meeting up on Saturday:
ITINERARY:
12pm Midday:Meet at Circular Quay. You can get there by bus, train or Ferry and it is easy to get to. There is a park on the west side of the Quay in front of the MoMA that we will be meeting at (See Map1)
652883
We will then be walking up through the historic part of the rocks area - great architecture to draw - and circling around to Observatory Hill for great panoramas of old and new city.
652884
Just next to observatory hill is the trust gallery where we will check out the 'SALON DES REFUSES' which carries on the french tradition from the era of the Salon. It is the 'rejected' entries from the archibald/wynne prizes however I often like them more than the finalists, as they are selected on basis of originality and creative merit. Always worth a look. Entry is $6/$4 concessions and more info here: http://www.nsw.nationaltrust.org.au/properties/gallery/exhibitions/salon/default.asp
Afterwards we will double back past circular quay, grab some takeaway and head up through the botanical gardens for sunset amongst the plants and bats!
As always, if you have any questions just give me a buzz on 0438070386!
cheers and see you all there!

Saturday 6 June 2009 - Sydney Sketch Meet 3
10. AM: Meeting at the Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park overlooking st Mary's Cathedral.
Sketching opportunities: Cathedral, heaps of people, the homeless people playing giant chess, smelly Ibises and big trees!
681632
11. AM: Walk up to the Art Gallery of NSW
A 5 minute walk up the road. Current exhibitions can be found here http://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/exhibitions/current, however the Permanent Collection of masterpieces from 17-19thc are a GREAT thing to study.
Approx 1 - 2 PM Botanical Gardens
Grab a coffee and walk across the road to the botanical gardens. Sketching opportunities including crazy exotic plants, some nice sweeping vistas of city/gardens, people, smelly ibises (again), action shots of bats peeing on min's head (most likely) and other assorted stuff! A really nice place to hang as the afternoon wears in.
The day will officially 'end' here, staying as long as you like and sketching.
I have a possible event lined up for the night which will be confirmed after this weekend - i will let you all know.
Cheers!

I am indeed a competitor, so I will be leaving the group at about 4 to go set up for the show. I would encourage the rest of you to come along - the last time they did it it was a sweeeet event! All the info you need is here: http://www.metrotheatre.com.au/events/2009/06/06/cut-paste-09
Also, Sketchmeet is now an official Extra Cheeese sponsored event, which means more people and more cool shit to come, bigger and better, onward and upward. Nice!! Now you can direct all your friends to the shiny new subsection at EC ---> HERE (http://extracheeese.com/?page_id=1317)

daz ill make sure i give more notice the next one. im taking the organisation upon myself and as such it floats around my schedule, which this time around, was somewhat hectic. If anyone else wants to show initiative feel free to let me know.
In the meantime, I have started talks with wacom locally about some sponsorship for our events (which means prizes, essentially - cross your fingers) as well as hooking it up with cut and paste as an official side event.
It is also now affiliated officially as an extracheeese event which means we piggyback off all their cool advantages, so expect things like free gallery entries, sponsorships, exhibition opportunities and so on.
All i ask in return is that you spread the word and I will try to keep it more organised and more open to as many people as possible. If you have any suggestions or requests, feel free to hit me up. Etc.
cheers
