View Full Version : DSG 882: Creature: REALLY LARGE & COMPLEX CREST ON STRANGE, COLOURFUL, TROPICAL BIRD

[ You all know what a "crest" is on a bird? ]
[ It's the feathers, and or beak, that give the bird a distinctive look. ]
[ I should probably provide some links, but I think you can Google with the best of them. Plus, I'm just a jerk. ]

The Peruvian Whro'chata, or "Bird of Hell" is a large song bird, known for it's magnificent red crest, it's horrid song (sounding to many like a human scream) and in the native belief that it's the reincarnation of a tortured soul.

Hermchen - Nice birds!
Hamsta - Love it. The foliage in front of the wing is unfortunate.. determining ground is confusing (looks like the wing simply disappears into the air), and it doesn't seem likely the bird would position itself in such an awkward position anyhow. Otherwise, I really like your use of colour, placement, difference in texture, and the bird design itself.
Gooze - I think you did a pretty good job on thoase feathers.
Hideyoshi - Nice sketch. Better if you'd made up the bird though... ;)
wayfarer - Very cute!
xgabo - Great contribution! That's what I had in mind when I created this topic! Nice job.
Vorace - Nice pic.
Antilight77 - Very strange little guy. Fun!
dagreengo Sorry no human figure today. You're not a slave to the DSG, though. :P
heri - Ha Ha! Looks straight out of some children's book. Very nice!
Okay, here's my 3 hrs. worth in photoshop:

Bill Hey Thx, good crit.
Good job from you as well, looks like a big red bottle opener :D the lady birds gotta love that. I love the contrast between the body and the head. Very well done on the textures of the fg, but the background, while really showing off the bird and that tree branch, is IMHO a little too "mechanical" with those perfect circles, and smooth transitions.
Also, I don't like the fact that the lower part of the beak is longer then the upper part, nor the fact they don't close all the way, but since I think these believe in nature, I guess it's legit to use them.
(I bet it has a really long tounge, for drinking those last drops of beer left in the bottle ;) )

Well, this one's a bit late, I had a LOT of trouble making a jungle background, and I'm still not very happy with what I've got (any tips?). The idea behind it is that this bird is a carnivore. It uses the faux flower on his head to attract humming birds and large insects, and then when it feels them touch the flower, it strikes.
I would've added a hummingbird, but that'd take longer than I wanted to spend.
I also think (too late) that the bird's body should be camouflaged, as that would make more sense, but oh well.

A couple refs used to figuring out how birds go together, just a few google searches. Completely done in Photoshop Elements 2.0 with a huge old Wacom Digitizer II. Took about 2.5 hours.

Here's mine... Sorry it's so late. It's really hard to get to a computer to upload things.
This one was a lot of fun. The initial sketches are in ball point pen, and the finished head and neck are markers with pen and ink. This probably took me an hour... I don't know for sure, because I was watching tv.

Hey, I've been watching these forums for a while, and this topic just inspired me to action. So I joined and here we are. Sorry it's so late, I was away for half the week.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v170/Grath17/Crest.jpg
My scanner sucks, but it gets the idea across. I focused more on the crest than the bird, which is simply a few lines.
Oh and the writing across the top has nothing to do with anything, just me doodling/writing in tounges in English class last week.
(For the curious, it says "Where did everyone go?" and "Yawns are contagious!")
