Hey dudes

This is my first post here on this fabulous forum and site. I have heard very much about it. :D:D:D

I have been drawing concept sketches for about 2 months now, on and off, and this is my latest creation. It's a gnome called Simmy SparkleCraft.

I hope you guys will give me sufficient and harsh comment and critics. Those who do not have the time, just fill in the poll. :D:D:D

Look like you love Hogarth. But I think his way of shading is much more clear to define form...

Here thing look a bit flat, shading don't really give mass.

Another thing, the ear seem strange. Too high I think, and they didn't look to be attach to the head

Another thing : why didn't he have all his head??

And to finish: the neck seem odd of the profile view.

I know it's cartoony. But since you draw an human, the rules are the same for the form and proportion - but you can exagerate them, attenuate and so on... but it must remain human :D (and it's fucking hard, I know)

Hey

Thx for the comment. BTW, who is Hogarth??? this drawing is of a gnome, so not all the rules apply to him, but i know there are some flaws.
About the shading, could you give me some advice on how to improve it, make it more stand out. I think it's very hrad, but i am very willing to try :D:D:D

PS, this is not an cartoony picture, it was meant realistic( well, then i must have screwed up totally :D:D:D:D)

look in the mirror or look at a picture of someones face and blur your eyes until you see simple shapes in the lighting.
essentially your head is a round object,, so think of lighting a sphere when your shading.. go look at androids self portrait thread for inspirado.

draw more from life,, draw all the time.. then you can start creating imaginary things. who cares how people rate your art.. deep down you know its true value to yourself.. do you really need us to tell you its worth?
if your currently as good as you ever want to be,, then your there.. if you want to be better,,, than work..

Hey

I have been told also that drawing from life is very important so i'll try that. I just got a great book called the anatomy for artists by Sarah Simblet with some great photo's. :D:D:D

About the rating, i know it's a bit crappy but i just wan't to know if i am on the right track. Off course i want to be bether and a poll will tell me what people think because mostly people are to busy, lazy or too ignorant to post comments and a poll is a quik and easy way of saying if you like it or not :D:D:D

if you want to get into the serious side of portrait drawing you might want to pick up hogarth's book on heads and faces.

Hey

Well, i just want to be a character designer and drawing concepts is one part of that proces:D:D:D

But if these books are that good, then i will have to take a look at them.

Thx :D:D:D

Before drawing concept character and so on you must know how to draw these character ;)

Hogarth has just a similar way of shading is drawing when he want to play with the mass of things, to give a better reading of the form for the viewer. It's totally unrealistic but it's usefull in some case(to study form and mass, to explain things...).
He can too use a traditionnal way of shading of course, but he has a similar way to do them as you, it's all :)

Has Davi and Lono has said, study from live. A lot. It's the faster way to achieve good result :) And yeah, know your anatomy, it allways come handy when you draw things that you will never see ;)
