I've been debating whether or not I could keep up with a regular sketchbook here for a while. So I decided, what the hell. :) I'll take a crack at keeping a regular (or fairly regular) sketch thread going.

Here's the first group...

A quick face sketch:
http://homepage.mac.com/josh_hagen/.Pictures/Sketch%20Book/sketchbook2b.gif

This is part of an unfinished page of comic book art from an unpublished comic:
http://homepage.mac.com/josh_hagen/.Pictures/Sketch%20Book/sketchbook1b.gif

Here's a couple things from my website to help me kick of my thread:

http://homepage.mac.com/josh_hagen/.Pictures/Sketch%20Book/inside-out-monster.gif

More to come.

Let me know what you think.

Van: Hopefully I fixed the problems I had showing the pictures.

Here's a couple more from my website. I'll try to not be lazy and show some newer stuff later today.

Couple concept designs for an unpublished comic book:
some intelligent gorilla thug...

just a bruiser...(i got inspired by another comic book artists shot from another comic for the bottom right shot. tried not to rip it off. i just loved the pose and look :} )...

Interesting designs. You have a nice variety going on.
Your linework is quite nice, but I think you can still push your values more as van said.

Whew! Spent the last few hours trying to get these pictures small enough to show. Finally got it figured out.

SirGreenSock: I agree about the values. I'm so used to just doing the line art. I acutally initially wanted to get into comic books so I'm used to doing pretty open line art, especially in sketches. I'm trying to get out of that rut and become more rounded as an artist being that I'm doing a lot more concept work.

Thought I would throw in some sculpture stuff for the heck of it. Is that cool? I love sculpting as much as I do illustration. I'll try to keep to illustration for the most part from now on though if showing sculpts on the sketchbook thread is a no-no. :dur:

If they ever show the final episode of "The Inside" on Fox, these are some fat hands done for the bad guy on it:

http://homepage.mac.com/josh_hagen/.Pictures/Busts%20and%20FX/fat%20hand%20appliance%20close%20up.jpg

a 6" maquette:
http://homepage.mac.com/josh_hagen/.Pictures/Maquettes/evil%20alien%20finishedb.jpg

a quick Norweigan Troll bust I did for my parents on Christmas:
http://homepage.mac.com/josh_hagen/.Pictures/Busts%20and%20FX/Troll%20bustb.jpg

I think that's a good cross-section of my sculptures. I didn't want to fill this post up with oversized pictures of all the rest. There's a bunch more on my site if you'd like to take a looksy.

love that fat hand, seems to show a good grasp on anatomy, and your drawing isnt bad either just like said before push your value. like the frame with the mouth and tongue licking upwards. ill check back in future

i really like some of your sculptures. especially the old guy's head. the comic book page submission doensn't do the trick for me. i think the top and bottom panels are too centered. as well as there isn't not a great enough sense of depth to the compositions.

AppoloNuevo: Thanks for the kind words on the old man bust. It was a lot of fun to do even though it was the smelly version of Roma clay.
I agree with what you said on the comic book page. I'll try to come up with some new stuff and keep composition more in my mind...as well as more of a background. :P

Finally finished a mountain of storyboard jobs. So now I can finally get back to my sketchbook thread.

One good thing about a mountain's-worth of jobs is that you get enough to afford things like a new Wacom tablet! I've wanted to get ahold of one of these babies for a loooong time. So I thought I would kick off my return to my sketchbook thread with a wacomized sketch.

the sculptures are excellent and i really like your swampthing like drawing. try using a softer pencil. looks to me like a lot of your values are limitted to the lower range, and it keeps you from enjoying the benefits of strong blacks. try drawing more from life to correct your notions of pants, for example, and just basic anatomy.

Worked on Photoshoping a couple of my sculptures. Here's the results:

Tried to get a copper look to this maquette

A blitered dirty skin look. Might work on it some more though

Waaaay past due replies...
bradley - Thanks for the kind words. I'm working on improving my values more and more.
ApolloNuevo/dan - Thanks for the compliments on my sculptures. I agree with your comments on my Hulk vs. Wolverine page. I posted it more for the characters than the overall composition. Still got work to do. :)
antquin - I know I really should use softer pencils. I know I will. I have some too, but I'm used to using lighter ones since I also ink my work at times. Easier to erase with lighter pencils. A bad habit I'm working on breaking.
Hypronost - Thanks man, I'm sending new work now.

Thought I would try sketching straight on the ol' wacom tablet. Hell of a lot of fun! A very interesting process. I'm definately going to keep at it.

I'll be posting them shortly...

Here's the new stuff I mentioned in the last post.
Each took 20 minutes. And they're in order.
I learned a little more with each one. The third one really flowed for me.

Let me know what you think. :)

*Note* I don't know why my pictures are showing up as url's instead of img's. Any advice on switching it back? I'm doing the pic.jpg.

Here's another quick sketch on the wacom.

Unlike the last three in the previous posts, this one only took 15 minutes. I think I'll try to push the time and see how I do in the next post.

Took a lot of what I've seen and read here at conceptart.org to heart and I drew like crazy to come up with what you see below. What's cool is that they didn't take long to do. Go figure. :)

Bennett: I actually just started some work using the demo of painter. I'm doing some work for an online video game and some of the colored stuff is with the painter demo. Pretty cool. I think I'd rather have the whole program. Seemed pretty limited compared to what I've seen done here.

styler: Thanks man! I did that sculpt a year or two ago...can't remember. Fun to do.

New one today. I wanted to do a zombie looking person. Well, I live in the hollywood area and my wife works in beverly hills so I had lots of subjects to draw on. Damn, there's some dangerously skinny people around here.

I think I'll photoshop this one next.

Hope everyone is getting ready to eat too much and get some cool gifts this holiday season! :^^: I'm waiting to hear back from a couple clients about some really cool jobs. It would be a great Christmas present! *crossing fingers*

Anyways, here's a new illustration. Critique if you like. :P

I'm also adding this thumbnail version just in case it doesn't show.

Here's another one I have to show.

First I have the pencilled version I showed earlier in this thread. It took about an hour and a half or so.
http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/9522/skinny25nb.jpg

Then I timed myself with painter and photoshop on it. I gave myself the same 90 minutes to mess around with it.

Here's something different. Decided to add some doodles and toons today. I used to do some comic strips at my college, though you would think so with all my creature stuff. :P

*Critiques Welcome*

First up is some warm-up doodles:

Next are some rough cartoon characters:

And finally we have some more finished toon characters:

You've got some crazy and very interesting skulpeys to display, love their flow and liveliness.
Your colouring attempts are not that convincing yet though.Your Greyscales and BnWs are stronger, I'd say.
So long...

blacky: Thanks for the comments on my sculpts. Yeah, I feel a bit more comfortable on them than my photoshop/painter skills. Working hard to bring them up to the same level. I'm also looking into working on a 3D program at some point - 3dmax, z-sculpt, lightwave, maya... Something to help me out in the fx and gaming businesses more.

Here's my rough - very rough - start to my Puppet/Puppet Master entry in the character section. I'll try to keep it updated both there and here. I'm also working on a couple more concept sketches and sculpts that I will post here as soon as I can.
