Hi guys! ;) You've got some great stuff arround here...so, I was wondering, since I work 'mannually'(which IS the most important thing, but, then again..)..What software are you using? Which programs are the best for 2d/3d works?
Best regards from a newbie..and expect to see my sketchbook...soon...;)

It depends on your tastes. If your are handy with paints, I'd say painter, but if you want precision without having to go back and refine everything, I'd say Photoshop.
IMO, PS has a very easy and quickly learned interface, where as painter is taking me quite a while, and it can get annoying. PS7, my version, isn't the best for painting (I think CS2 has a painting thing or something), but I prefer the interface and easily attained precision. Painter is fun for a good painting experience, and you can do all sorts of things that you know how to do in real life. It all depends on your fancy. Try the free trials first.

The top competitor in the 2D graphics world is Adobe Photoshop. This is a must have for any profesional and many companies require this skill in many cases. It used to be that good Photoshop skill were almost more important that artistic skills. That's changed but knowing Photoshop is about as important in the professional world as having hands and eyes. /m\
Next is Corel Painter. I have Painter 8 and I love it. I got it about two months before v9 came out and they gave no breaks to recent buyers of v8 so I'm sticking with it. It's stable and I'm still learning.
Painter is cheaper than Photoshop but you really need a Drawing tablet to use Painter like it should be used. Tablets are good for Photoshop too but I've seen people work with Photoshop and a mouse and produce impressive works.
What's really cool is that IF you buy a Wacom Intuos tablet soon you can get a coupon for 50% off Photoshop CS2. That means if you buy a tablet you really have the choice of either Photoshop or Painter for the same price range.
There are other programs too. Paintshop Pro, Corel Draw and others. THere is some free stuff too. I believe that Opencanvas is free and I've seen work done on that which would blow you away.
But all in all it Photoshop or Painter and the very best is both.

Alias Sketchbook pro is by far my favorite program to draw with. I find it allows me to do the most with the most crucial tools i need. However, i just wish it would allow some user made brushes...if it did, it would nearly replace painter for me. :)

No idea, I use OSX 10.4.2 :)
But sketchbook pro2 was only available for g4 and up processors, so I am willing to bet it wont work on older wintel processors. I doubt system version has anything to do with it, it is all about the processor speed.

I use The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/). I'm not terribly good with it, but I believe it has most of the features of Photoshop, and it's free.
Not the best of user interfaces though, and a steep learing curve.

Photoshop 5.5 is what I use, cuz I got it cheap. It has almost everything I need, except a good smearing brush, and textured strokes (which I just have to live without, hence 'my style').
Illustrator and painter would be nice but I can't afford them atm.
Deluxe Paint is still offering valuable features, I used it just the other day to draw symetrical spaceships. It's also excellent for drawing/testing tiles and doing palette tricks.
I've also written my own software for palette managment and scaling.

I'm with Slash on the Zbrush2/3dsmax thing :)
ArtRage is awesome, especially since it's free.
Photoshop is my main weapon of choice, though.
