right, i've been lurking these forums for quite long enough now, its about time i'd post some stuff.
i've been working on and scetching so called 'bird people' for a couple of days now (wich means a big stack of scetches) together with a couple of aspiering concept artists from my game design class, and after reading the 'Digital painting in PS' thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47859) i dicided it was time to put some of these newly aquired techniques to the test and well.. try to make the best of it.
as you notice, no legs. i'm still not quite sure what i want for the anatomy of the legs, be it human legs, birdlegs or a crossover between them... the real problem with this is flight, becouse human legs are really not bendy enough and too clumbsy to actually support flight, and we want these bird people to actually look like they *could* maybe fly without technological aid.
but allright enough with the jabbing. started my work in PS this morning, and i'm posting a step-by step progress of aproximately 4-7 hours of work (i loose track of time when drawing, really.)
right, so, step one:
this is the flat scetch made in photoshop. actually had to erase the head three times becouse it kept being too big. its a common flaw in my work and i'm desporately trying to get rid of my big-heads syndrome.

step two:
added background-ish thingie with a textured brush. i always tend to obsessively meddle with characters and ending up with a white background, so this is an attempt to... have a background while the picture progresses.

step three:
dumped some colors on a layer underneath the lines but over the background. just to give a general impression of what i'd want.

step four:
basically an elaboration of step one, on a new layer for easy fixing.
http://img74.imageshack.us/my.php?image=owlscholar48cv.jpg
step five:
added green into the background to make it more part of the creature, and added darker shadings into the creature with a dark shade of grey (black is a bad color BAD COLOR!!)
http://img74.imageshack.us/img74/2856/owlscholar50bi.jpg
step six:
started doing detailes, not going overboard too much, though i might have gone too far on the face... >_>
still working on the right wing, left wing is untouched so far.

after this, i plan to add another layer and play with some textured brushes to make the clothes look a little more special, add some bright highlights especially in the eyes and placed on strategic places in the feathering... aaand... yes, the background, make it somewhat more cloudy.
worked at it at 200% of displayed size.
i'll post an older preciously finished picture in the finished works section for those interested.
