View Full Version : Rebecca Kimmel ~ Figurative Drawings and Paintings

Hi conceptart.org. :^^:
I've lurked here a bit and have really enjoyed seeing the great stuff that is posted here. So, I've decided to set up shoppe and show some of my stuff. Many of my pieces are Master Copies and drawings which I have done over the years in an attempt to become a draughtsman. My favorite artists from which to copy are Michelangelo, Rubens, and, in terms of painting, Odd Nerdrum (a contemporary figurative oil painter).
Anyway, I graduated with a BFA in Illustration from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, a school with which many of you are familiar or from which you may have graduated. I studied under the great teachers Burne Hogarth and Harry Carmean, amongst many other wonderful professors. I was fortunate enough to have been in their last classes.
I'm now in the finishing year of my MFA studies at George Mason University ~ with a concentration in Digital Art. My dream job would be to teach Digital Art, Drawing, and Painting at the College level. I am honored to be conducting my first CGWorkshop starting Oct. 3. (http://workshops.cgsociety.org/courses/000008/) I can't believe that the class has filled, and am very excited!
I moderate a forum which I created recently on CGTalk called the "Artistic Anatomy and Figurative Art" (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=177) Forum. It has been an honor and a thrill to see the great work that people have done there.
I have run 3 Lessons, 001, 002, and 003 (which are now over, but always open for viewing) on Basic Drawing Principles. I had a blast, and made a lot of new friends.
I heard from magic man that this was a great place to post, so here I am! Thank you for stopping by for a look. :teeth: Cheers! :teeth:

You've done some really great drawings! Nice hatching...and enclosures.
Have you tried atmospheric perspective w/line weight?? ->closest is sharpest and darkest.
I think drawings look good either way, just something else to try if you havn't. Nice paintings too!

I love the rendering on all the bones, extremely fine work. *goes in to investigate further*

DogHead,
Thank you! Hmm, I guess I never really thought of 'atmospheric perspective w/line weight?? ->closest is sharpest and darkest' in just that particular way ~ I think I think more in terms of calligraphic lines, and try to play with lineweight in strictly an aesthetic way ~ less so in terms of actual push/pull of space, which is really interesting. :teeth: Thanks for taking a look! :teeth:
LightKirtar,
Thank you kindly! :teeth: I have to admit, doing some of these drawings drove me a little batty...they're rather old, and I'm reluctant to draw this way anymore, because once I start...I can't stop. :x
Ooh! Some really nice work on your thread too! :teeth: I'm really impressed with the quality of work here ~ very inspiring!
Cheers guys! :)

Glad to see you here at CA Rebbeca. I've seen your stuff and classes on CGTalk (I'm a memeber there too). I look forward to you being involved here as well, maybe doing the same sort of thing after you've poked around a bit longer.
CA is a great place. It's a little easier going that CGT, IMO. Easier to get around... but then I've been here longer so maybe that's why. I think you'll like it here.

Thank you for the warm welcome! As a relatively new webbie person myself (CGTalk has been my first Website all~out addiction) I am definitely nosing about and trying to get a feel for the Internet world...call me slow! :rendered:
Anyway, hope to see you around both forums! :rendered:

These are lovely pieces. Now that I have had a chance to catch my breath, I want to tell you how I liked the walk over from traditional to digital, very inspiring. The one crit I would give is on the piece of the laid out nude: the foot look a bit obscured and unfinished. Other than that Rebecca, you have rocked my socks. Thanks for the awesome post. I feel like I should be buying a book of your work.

Wow, thanks so much for your comments! These are very generous considering the quality of your work, which I have just had the benefit of checking out on your Sketchbook thread. The level of work here is quite amazing. It's nice to be so inspired!

t e m p i s t ~,
Thank you so much! Really nice of you to make these comments. :) Right now, my primary preoccupation is encouraging others on the Anatomy Forum to paint and draw, so ironically I'm not doing as much myself...but it has been a total joy and has totally refreshed my love of art. :) Just checked out your work and it is amazing! :teeth: ~Everyone here seems incredibly talented! Awesome work. Great studies, and very inspirational. I see some Burne Hogarth studies too - must have been amazing to be able to work with him directly.
I wonder if you have any recommendations for good books on drapery? I have Hogarth's book on drapery, and rely a lot on catalog models, but could probably use some other resources.
Keep up the great work!
Rebeccak
September 16th, 2005, 02:09 AM
Francis,
Thanks for your comments and for stopping by. :^^:
ROFL, the book which I usually recommend to folks for drapery studies is the one you have already read, so that is not much use to you, unfortunately. Still, here is a link to Hogarth's book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0823015874/ref=pd_sim_b_3/002-4736002-6403239?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance) should others be interested in it. ;)
I'm better equipped to answer a question regarding Anatomy Books. :)
Here is a thread where Anatomy Books can be found listed:

Hope this is more useful, lol! <3

Thanks for stopping by here, and hope to see you post your work on the Anatomy forum! No need to be shy. :blahblah:
Arctis,
Oh, wow, I didn't know you were a member here too, that is awesome! Thanks for dropping by, it was a pleasure to have you in the Open Figure Drawing Workshop, and I really hope you participate again in OFDW 004! Zhuzhu, who is in real life a model, has agreed to allow us to use photographs for the next Workshop, which should be fantastic! I think it should be really cool and fun to see zhuzhu do a self~portrait! :blahblah:

September 16th, 2005, 10:20 AM
Zaknafain,
Thank you very much! A lot of my digital pieces began their lives as traditional pieces, and I think the ones which have retained the most 'traditional' feel have been the most successful...so I agree with you that the upper Nerdrum copy is one of my better digital paintings. :confident Thanks for stopping by and posting these nice comments! They make my day. :bashful:
Simon Gustafsson,
Thanks a bunch for stopping by! I saw Nerdrum's work in a San Diego exhibition once, and it was thrilling! His paintings are really huge, and I am amazed at their texture and rich vibrancy. In so many ways traditional work inspires me, and making the transition to digital is sometimes a rocky road...but I am enjoying it very much! No Ctrl + Z in traditional, lol! :)
patdzon,
Thank you very much! I have a lot more of my Drawings on my website, and it is thankfully back up again (yesterday the server was down, yeek!) so please take a gander. :) I will be trying to post more images here shortly...gotta go round 'em up! :)

Glad to see you've come joined the elite ranks of Conceptart, Rebecca! One can only hope you'll inspire the up-and-comers of our community in the same way you did at CGtalk. As always, nice drawings. I definitely see the Hogarth influence in some of your work ;) I've always wondered..... what's it like working under him? He's sort of a hero to me, since his "Dynamic Figure Drawing" was my first art book.

Sawa,
Thanks so much, you made my day! :) Hope to see you around the forums. :)
Dementist,
Thanks so much for the warm welcome! It's great to be here, and it's amazing to see how much great work is going on. :) Working under Hogarth was a pleasure and a pain. He was a fantastic guy, and sort of a Drawing God, lol! :) We all loved him as much as he seemed to loathe us (it was all tough love, of course). If I can be just a bit like him, then I can die happy! :bashful:
Cheers! :)

Rebeccak: Tisk, tisk. I realize what you do is a very good thing and in no way should you stop or slow down. Revel in the joy!
However, I'm going to tell you something that I know you would tell me should I ever say I don't have time to draw. Find time. A tiny bit here, a tiny bit there. Get a little sketchbook and a mechanical pencil (so you can attach it to the sketchbook ring binding) and draw, draw, draw. You do eat right? Draw when you eat lunch. Draw your lunch! Draw your waitress or your fork or your hand holding the fork.
OK, back to my role as a Wannabe.
No wait, I have to say this. I was a hard core, fully addicted guitarist. I had the total set up and I sang and wrote hundreds of songs. I had a band, we played all over California. Then there came a time when I had less time. I picked up the guitar less and less. My guitars have dust on them now.
Don't let a day go by that you don't draw at least a little something.
OK, that's all.
Rebeccak
September 16th, 2005, 02:00 PM
L. Scott Knight,
Thanks so much for this advice! You know, someone else was getting after me for this, telling me that if I didn't watch out, I'd become one of those Instructors who always said but never did. It's a tough trap to avoid, but I think your advice is right on the money, and I will take you up on your offer. :)
Thanks for the supportive comments...and I would love to see your work on the Anatomy Forum! :) (If you have posted there, and I have forgotten, please forgive me...I have a bit of early onset Alzheimer's, lol!) :bashful:
So...you know now I have to ask...what say you pick up that guitar again? :rendered:
Cheers and best wishes, :)

L. Scott Knight
September 16th, 2005, 02:49 PM
Oh, I'll do that because I want my son to experience it but the guitar thing is complex and a long story. The happy side is that I've found a new calling, to be a writer and I'm working on the a great deal. But I've also recently discovered the joys of illustrating my own work and I've been really enjoying getting back into doing art and now digital art.
I majored in Computer Science in collage but back then (1984-1987)computers were so boring! I quite that and tried the collage art thing but that collage program was worse than the Comp. Sci.! However, at the time I was storming up the ladder in the Ciramic Tile trade so I just dove into that.
However, I got high marks for my art work and for my creative writing and I should have paid more attention to that. Funny though, living life between then and now has greatly improved my ability to observe and to think creatively. I think my time is now.
Anyway, I really do need to bring down the old Marshal Amp and restring my beloved electric and rip out a few rifts. Maybe even see if I can belt out a tune. For relaxation... :)
Look forward to seeing you post some doodles!

el coro,
Hey, man, thanks! A nice compliment coming from you! :} Thanks for dropping by! :)
L. Scott Knight,
Wow, it's so interesting to hear everyone's stories. It's funny, it wasn't until I became a regular frequenter of CGTalk that I realized how many visual artists are also musicians, writers, etc...I really wish I had a musical pursuit as well, but I guess I am stuck with paint and pixels, lol! ;)
It's funny, because there was a SIGGRAPH speaker, a Chinese man who is basically the father of all things 3D, and he was saying that he quit pursuing his graduate studies in Computer Graphics because there were no color monitors then, lol! Then, when they came up with one at another university, he resumed his studies there. So, yeah, times definitely change! :}
Anyhoo, I hope to post more work soon, in the hopes that you guys will kick my butt into shape! I love teaching, it's just been great, but I also need to constantly learn new stuff myself, so...heh, I'll have to get going!
Cheers guys! :)

rebecca,
obviously good, skilled work. i dont know what else you do, but right now your 'only' showing master copies - and digital painting which are studies / copies from your favorite artists.
the studies/copies are technically impressive, but it can also be almost too comfortable a thing to crank out.
you obviously have skills enough to do your own, original work. i for one, would love to see some.
(but i wouldnt mind seeing some more of these nice studies either...)

You're totally right, and I appreciate your comments! Right now, really the only non~master copy is the back view of the skeleton, which was done from 'life' ~ well, me sitting in front of a skeleton anyway, lol! :)
I have done TONS of life studies which are just so old that I can't find them / or don't want to, lol. :) My parents are eager to have me remove them from their home, lol!! Maybe I can retrieve them at one point and thus accomplish two goals at once, hahahaha!!! :)

RebeccaK asked: Is there anyone here without talent, lol!
Well, there was the Manky guy... see this thread...
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=36803
And this thread...
Or not... saddly the Insect Battle Thunderdome thread seems to be gone. Too bad.
Anyway, this guy was the reason we have \w/ and /m\. He really thought he was a master and pretty much insisted he was even though people both harshly and nicely explained that he wasn't.
When you have some time, ENJOY. It's a good laugh!

Hey Rebecca! I remember seeing some of these over at cgtalk.com for that 15mins sketch thread. That looked sweet. Gauge,
Hey there! Thanks a bunch! You know, I did one small Workshop a few months back (organized through the organization ArtDC, Jesse Cohen runs it and it is a great organization (www.artdc.org) and it was a blast! The problem lies in finding space less than in finding a model. Do you go to school around here? If so, I might be willing to try to organize something in December or January, it just depends.
You can find me online, quite a lot, however, on the Anatomy Forum:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=177
and our current 'hot' thread is the 15 Minute Sketchathon:

Definitely join in! Hope to see you on the Anat. Forum as well. :)

@ NOOB,
I use General's Charcoal pencils, 6B, soft. :)
@ Gauge,
What a pity ~ I know where that is, in Arlington, right? I was going to look into teaching there, but haven't gotten around to doing it.
I am hoping to teach another CGWorkshop, but don't know how soon that will be. And in truth, one needs sustained instruction, not just one or two live sessions with an instructor to really get going in the Anatomy Department.
Why not create your own Anatomy Thread here:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=177
~Take a look at all of the other Anatomy Threads, particularly these ~ these guys have all JUST come out of my CGWorkshop, which concluded today:

Yeah it's the one in arlington. I think I will start an anatomy thread there because today i tried to do an imagination drawing (after having done mostly life/ref drawing for a long while) and it just came out dissapointingly bad. I thought I had made more progress than that but apparently not.
Oh and I have a quick question. I noticed a lot of people studying from the anatomy book by Stephen Rogers Peck, which is the same book I have. And I noticed a lot of people doing fully rendered studies and I was wondering if that's necessary? I mean if I'm trying to learn it, should I be spending more time on quantity or rendering? I read that quantity of studies would matter more than the rendering, but in most sketchbooks I seem to see the opposite, so I'm a bit confused is all.
Rebeccak
November 28th, 2005, 05:06 PM
Gauge,
There's really no right answer ~ but I would say that doing a few select quality drawings is a lot better than doing a lot of mediocre drawings. Of course, it's best to do a lot of quality drawings. :)
EDIT: Another thing to note is that you don't have to fully render a drawing for it to be a 'quality' drawing. If you do a lovely outline, you need not shade it, necessarily. It's just up to your mood and what you want to get out of the process.
The point is to get started. Often people debate these questions ad infinitum, and the point is just to get in there and get working. ;) You will certainly do a lot of bad drawings along the way ~ I've done hundreds of bad drawings myself to get to the few good ones that I've kept.
Hope this helps. :)
Cheers,

I am not a big fan of soft edge brush in PS, because it's so hard to use and always produces that distinctive air brushed look, but I must say rebecca you have such great control over it I must give it a try. I know your knowledge with figures and anatomy is what makes it so damn good but I am really developing a sweeet side to your digital sketches. I absolutely love the fourth on your last post. That's just brilliant, great control of the tool and anatomy is sweeeet :) cheers

Hi Rebecca,
Good work, I am wondering if I took an art seminar class with you. I have been working in the video game industry for over 13 yrs now and am the concept art director. I trained in the Florence Academy and have taken classes with Covino, Corry, and some Atelier programs.
Your name sounds so familiar, maybe it's from your site. Anyway, I think your drawings are great. I run a site too at www.learning2draw.com. Best of luck to you! How's George Masons MFA program?
