This is a good example of something I need to do more of, and that's anatomy studies. I just don't have the patience for this kind of drawing. You are definetley going down the right path with these drawings, it will be great to see how you progress through the months.

Nice stuff, i like you work on anatomy.
I would say build up more line confidence, a lot of these are quite fluffy. Try working with a pen to build up confidence.
Some longer studies would also be good for getting a better grasp of form.
Keep going, you are completely on the right track, much more than me.

Neat stuff you've got here. I'm particularily fond of the inked hand in the above picture. You're headed in the right direction, so I can't really offer any advice other than to keep at it.

The lightsource is wrong on the guy holding the pole with the big stomach, the shadow's on his shoulder somehow but the light's coming from above right. On 11:05 today this occurs again on the picture of the hand holding a book(?), the light's coming from above right but then the index finger is lighted differently than the others. Your also making the reflected light too bright which is seen on the pepper from Today 2:03. To give your lines more purpose they've got to have specific meaning: Depends on the person, but to me the first thing line represents is contour. I mean 3 dimensional contour, all those lines are moving in 3D within the picture plane imaginarily touching specific points on the form of the object. Having said that there's tons of stuff I dig in here: The charcoal and chalk on colored paper, conte on black paper from life, mass drawings, you don't repeat or reuse poses(which is rare as hell). Your going in the right direction with this here, I can't wait to see where this goes in a few months.

hey armando, I really appreciate the critique, this is the nectar of the artist, the life blood of our breed. I'd like to clarify that I didn't render the rope, so the shadow is going to be all screwy without that visual reference. That fat guy drawing is all screwy anway, the head is too big and so are the hands. I agree with you about the reflected light, it should be duller, but, if i remember correctly, i had the light source about 1 foot away from the damn thing. You're right about the pointless construction lines, I oughta make sure my lines have delibrate intent. Once again, thanks man, hope to see you back in here.

Ha ha. I thought you spelled advice wrong on purpose. Who is that fat guy? I've never rated anyones sketchbook, it seems weird. As long as the sketchbooker is practicing and learning then it's good. For practice with light sources get a box, block or whatever, light it from different angles then draw it.

Good progress here dude! Just keep drawing! I like the feel of the last soldier drawing a lot. The rough rendering on the shield and helmet is cool. Just mind the proportions a tad more. The torso and the upperlegs fit together, but the lowerlegs are very small (they should be twice as long). The arm could be a tad longer too and his hand is very big. The pose is cool! Rock on :)

Very nice. The scan-draw-scan-draw-etc is a good technique for even learning how you draw. I understand the scanning problem, thing mine is like 9x11. Anyway, since I am here, lets talk about you! I can see some major improvement in here. Keep rolling them out. Draw on everything, it helps. Nice faces by the way. Have you done any "out of mind" stuff?

Hey man, you're going to have to change your name to PHat kid if you keep it up. You life drawings are good. They seem to have a strong base to them and good values. Keep up the good work and progression is inevitable.

Cheers dude, i see what you mean with the foreshortening. From that point of view the lowerleg would be longer than the upperleg and not the other way around. Im some cases the lowerleg would look smaller but only because the foot would block the sight of the full lenght (the foot proberly should be pointing upwards - downwards like that would be very painfull i think). Sweet thing doing classsketches with no ref - makes your brain tight hehe. I noticed that you have a very nice sence of the facial struktures. Nice man. (not that it should stop you from doing tons of studies hehe). Keep on keeping!

Man, I've got to increase my output. You should pick out a sketch you like, then finish it more: correct the proportions, fix the lighting, and use whatever reference you need for the muscles. You'd improve even faster that way. You are drawing up a storm.

i like the enrgy of your drawings. two suggestions: work big and don't clog up your page with little drawings. i, myself, can't learn jack from drawing small, except drawing small. get big paper, i'm talking 14x17 and give yourself room to study, even if it means not being able to fit the whole piece of paper in your scanner. :[

Your from life stuff really shows a lot of potential. The face posted on the 15th is the best of the bunch so far. Very nice!
Also, this one (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a34/holycrap1/51th.jpg) shows a quickly improving understanding of structure and anatomy.
I suggest picking up some figure drawing books and drawing from them at least a few times a day. You'd be surprized how helpful they are with understanding the figure.

TFK - nice work, it is looking pretty good. i think you could use some focused studies of head and figure layins just to help with some placement, and also some perspective would help. you have a good work and you are heading in the right direction just keep pushing yourself :) if you need examples i can give you some links to places i go.

I like the new study good work with the shadows they look good. The self-portrait is kind of funny you have a chin. The sunset is good I like the clouds. It is a little dark though, I figure you never would be up for sunrise anyway. Last thing is the guy with the stick has no eyes it looks alien, I don't know what your aim on that was, anatomy and didn't care about face or just alien.

I actually purchased a sketchbook Sunday. I've already filled three pages. Mostly in English with that wench of a teacher. About a third of it is worth looking at... And I wont use your thread as a post-it note again. Sorry sir... Anyway, Doug's sister (you know Alli) hooked me up with her scanner. I should be posting the stuff today. Being a fat kid myself I felt obliged to repsond to your thread. I should have earlier but I can already see you're making quite a bit of progress. I could pick some things a part but being that I'm short on time I'll just say two things. First, you need s'more studies up in here. This non ref stuff you've been updating with is nice but I want you to kick your butt into gear and give us s'more life drawings and anatomy studies. I'm tired of your messing around, fat boy! If you want to improve you must work harder! :upset: Put some figures into perspective, draw them using basic shapes, make them interact, etc. Push yer'self. Second, be more confident and think more about the lines you put down. Soemtimes things seem sort of chaotic at times. Remember the structure. Keep it up. And don't worry, I'll eat some for you. I love me some Chimi's. :rendered: Great thread, btw.

I think you were right about your pencil drawings getting a little stagnant. Thats not to say that they arent great, but, especially for me, a little repetative. However, the newer charcoal stuff is excellent. I really like the highlight only stuff. I can only guess that the "subtle" one is a guy with a lamp shade or paper bag on his head, or maybe a glass bottle??? Probably my own fault, not seeing things the right way. Or perhaps its one of those things that once you have seen it, you will always know what it is. Anyway... I really like the dark/light charcoal stuff on the brown paper. Mr. R. had us using those in drawing class, I love the idea of adding light. If I can get him to take mine off of the wall, maybe I'll show them to you in my thread. Keep trying those highlight only drawings. As Ned would say Primo Stuff. It's what separates you from the schmoes. (sp?)

Hey man, nice improvement here. If I can offer up some advice, try hard to get your line/underdrawing correct before spending too much time shading. It's easy to get caught up with using values to try and 'fix' things, I do it too much myself. If your drawing without any values doesn't look right, no amount of shading will make the proportions correct. Keep going with the studies, you're definitely picking up a lot of stuff and improving!

Some more arm studies should be useful. Keep an eye on proportion, and anatomy. Unfortunatly your arms are probably all flabby and not buff like mine, so it won't be as simple as looking in the mirror for reference. Ha Ha :muscle:

Sorry, I've missed posting for the last two days. Your stuff is getting better. Doug is right about the guitarist? (the stickish figure sitting on a chair) I like the red stuff. What is that done in? The only thing that I can see is the p60 hand--looks a little screwy. Hands are something that I think you need to spend more time on--you almost seem to be avoiding them...

Hey, I like your stuff, and I'm glad that you're concentrating on the human figure, as it is definently one of the most intriguing subjects that one can find. However, I think that you should take a few steps back as you draw. This will allow you to check yourself and make sure the drawing looks good and correct as a whole. Also try blocking off certain areas of the drawing with your hand to see if it improves the look of the rest of the drawing, and work on the area that is flawed. Constantly search for flaws and rework those areas, then get a fresh look by taking a step back. Master each one of your drawings, and look for quality rather than quantity. I hope that this advice will help you on some level, and I need to work on these same aspects of my art as well, so i hope I am not too much of a hypocrit. good luck!

Sedig: ya got me...i do like to avoid hands...I'm decent when they aren't attached to the body, but when I have to deal with their connection, I tend to shy away....I actually have been working on it, whether or not you can tell....anyhow...That red stuff is sanguine conte, the stuff that you don't know what it is...Ask Mr. Roddy about it, or Mr. Nesti, they'll hook you up...

Mr. Blonde: Turns out we're practically the same age, my birthday is 3 days after yours, so I'll keep your seniority in mind....Your advice is very sound, it had never occured to me to use my hand to see individual parts...pending your advice, I'll work more on each drawing as opposed to leaving minor flaws.....hopefully I can strive for your excellence...thanks for dropping by...

Over all I think the oil painting looks good, it's got a little bit of caricature going on. The space between the eyebrows looks a little wide, like the far eye brow isn't where it should be. Anyway, it's good to see you working on some more in depth studies. I hope you stick around this site, I'm getting lots of ideas just by reading the stuff you leave in other people's books.

This is the first time I've had a chance to check your sketchbook in a while. I'm really impressed with a lot of this stuff.This (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a198/holycrap3/105th.jpg) was a surprise. Well done! Nice to see some Loomis studies as well.
I notice you have a tendancy to get stuck on short, choppy strokes especially when you are using a pencil.
Try starting your drawings with broad/basic shapes using some media that puts down a broad, sure strokes.
A few of my faves- Prismacolor gray markers (20% or 30 % are best for layout), graphite sticks ( I prefer the wide ones/ break the full length stick in half and lay in shapes with the side) woodless graphite pencil (held under-hand so you can draw out nice, thick curves).

fatkid, nice job on number 58. i think i'll rip you off and look for something like that to draw. was that drawn from life, same as the bus stop guy? those are the best. hopefully you get a rush of excitement doing it. a suggestion i have is to look for out of the ordinary, not straight on portraits. i think they make for more interesting drawings. look at the degas stuff. a lot of his pieces have the model looking away--gives you a chance to have the body language speak, and that is so much more interesting. well, i think so anyway. look at me, i should go draw, now. :blahblah: thanks for stopping by my book.

hey thanks! ive been drawing for a few years. i started in first grade copying disneyand have been doodling since, but i really picked up drawing junior year when i took an art class in school. i can copy things pretty well but i have the hardest time trying to draw things i think of. like if someone says draw a football player wearing a tutu i can't get the right forms or anything to be in correct relation to each other.

btw your back study is great! a crit i have is to watch the size of your hands,a bit big.

thx for the comments in my sketchbook! my one suggestion to you is to start switching up mediums more...you need to get away from the safety of the pencil...as well as you need to hold your pencil farther from the tip, closer to the eraser...it looks to me like you're trying to control too much at this point.

Great study, bro. Just remember to wrap the values around the form and keep taking note of the basic principles of the value scale, like on a sphere. Some areas of this one are really poppin' quite well. I know you can do better tho! Gimmie s'more!

Sorry it's been so long..... The library comps wren't loading things again.... Either way--congrats on the third page, and on the rating. Both show that you are moving right along. You should be bored and depressed more often. You produce good stuff that way. The chest you did while watching The Terminal (it is a good flick) is good. I think a few of the highlights might be a little, hmmmm, stark?, maybe?, I can't think of a word for it. The back/arm is the same way. The light is just a little too bold? contrasting? err... maybe it's just too light. Maybe try blending it?

Sedig: Thanks, I don't really have a problem being bored and depressed...my environment contributes to that quite easily....I wish you could see the damn thing in person, the scanner rapes it. The scanner seems to pick out things I can't see....since its just graphite, that's barely the white of the paper since I'm erasing away powdered graphite I rubbed into it....either way, I'll keep starkness (I know what you mean) in mind on the next few....
if you want more replies in your thread, update with images more, it makes people think your needy and whiny if you bump your own thread without pictures....plus, post in other peoples threads, it makes them feel important and special too, just like you....

Dang it. I hate it when other people are correct about my own faults..... anyway... this one is better, (chronicles of riddick wasn't) The light source is obvious and bright, so those ultra light lights work better. The only place that needs the reduction in starkness (yes, I understand the scanner problem) is the neck. otherwise, it looks great.

This is a nice page. I really like the head top left. The facial expression is excellent. Ref or non ref? My only crit is the elbow of the wrestler? on the bottom right. It looks like it is bending the wrong way. Is that why you have a line through it?

The fat kid - I have been watching you progress dude. Your enthusiasm inspires me a veritable shite load.

Drawing doesn't come o/n but the harder we work the deeper in the satisfaction we become. I only got back into drawing when I was 27 after stopping when I was 14-15. I did some drawing in between but these were times when the passion was hot. I only discovered CA about 2 years ago and knew nothing of Concept Art. I have forgotten about ' if only for the years I didn't draw' and now just love it again. But.. i do wish i had drawn in those years. What I'm trying to say is be careful you don't burn out, but MAKE SURE you don't stop. Your life WILL be more rewarding for the drawing. I think your progression is fucken A. ROck on :}

For those more finished muscle guy studies, try simplifying the next one into planes, and working it out in perspective, then doing another more realistic drawing based on that value study. It's boring but it'll teach you some new stuff.

osgoon: thanks man, I didn't think my stuff was that good....about the question, I was using 100 lb vellum surfaced bristol board that I rubbed fine powdered graphite into, then I took a 4b pencil and put in the darker areas, i then erased out the lights and the whites....anything else?

Hmmm, thought I allready replied in here.
I see that your drawings from photo's are much better then the stuff you do from life.
You've got the right intention to render. Try to apply that to your 'life' stuff.
Always focus and keep the attention level high!
Don't be hasty when you sketch or shade. Take your time. Really look at how your shadows make the form and watch your values!
I think you will progress fast with the right way of working and attitude. Your sketchbook is promising , my man

hey man, great stuff so far. I see some killer anatomy studies, try get a good book, or magazine and relax yourself doing as much studies as you can, do it slow, look the lines.
I think the only way to get better is to know why you put every line, even if it's wrong, learn why you put the line, learn with every drawing you make. And take it easy. :)

TFK :: Your values are coming along. The line work and proportions on this last one are pretty good. I find your chalk on dark paper work the most dynamic of your posts. I dig that last one of the figure's torso stretched out.

To crit, you could use a little more control with your strokes (something I have been working on lately). I have learned that one simple pencil stroke can say a lot. I saw a post a while back by killing.people on this forum that had some really good examples and insight into pleasing shading techniques and stroke patterns. Bummer, I can't seem to find it anymore. The best advice I can give on the matter (since I am no where near an expert) is to try and keep your strokes in one motion throughout only crossing with a 45 degree angle for darker areas. (if that makes any sense). Throw some of those skills into your bag of tricks and you would be amazed at how much more impressive your work will be.

I love the motion you're portraying, and there's some great detail I see in modeling out some of the muscle shading. Only critique I have is in consistency. You've obiously established a knowledge of anatomy and various technical skills. It's more a matter of deciding on one style, and sticking with, taking it as far as you can. The underpass caught my eye. You were asking for critiques, I don't know if it has to be a certain size or not. If it doesn't I'd maybe crop it in on the right side, you have a lot of unresolved space over there. The more I look at it though it's starting to work, maybe just work on it a bit more to help the mark making to look more intentional, more like you meant to do it that way instead of it just happened that way, more confident. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for the comments in my SB. :)

Sorry it's I took so long. I tried to post yesterday, but the comp wasn't working right... Ok, the overpass-- This looks really good. YOu are getting better with your charcoals. two crits. PARALLEL LINES. I am a stickler for those. You have a few mistakes in the pillars, and the overpass has one spot where it gets noticably thinner.
the paint tube--THis looks great too. The forshortening is awesome. However, as a result of time, or scanner, this one looks a little muddy. The SP- this is nice, but your hair is as long as mine is! Only one thing--people tell me more darks, so now I tell you. Far better than my attempt, (It shall not grace my thread) but still, the darks seemed to ahve been rubbed away. Are these sitting a sketchbook, rubbing against other pages? The same thing happened to the tube of toothpaste. The kid- PUT YOUR HEART INTO IT! I know you can do it if you try. Someday you will ahve to learn to do a commissioned drawing-why not start now? OH, and your pen work is excellent. You should draw with it far more often. Though I'd end on a happy note.
BTW- Mr. Nesti invited me to see you in Chicago. I wanted to come, but today was not only the PSAE testing date, but IMEA tryouts as well. I died inside.

Cool stuff happening.. really like how this stuff is all growing together in the latest pieces. One small thing for you, when you're shading.. sometimes work in a little more transitions between values. Usually the side of the lead is best for this, even if you using mechanical. All depends on the texture you want though. Keep it coming dude!

Take your time rendering out something. Watch your values and linework for example. I know they're just sketches but you can achieve great detail and proper values in a sketch aswell. Only the most experienced artists are able to put down a few lines and make it look incredible... :)

These are nice too. I Don't Care what the other guys say, I really like the choppy shading. It really shows the plane well, and adds interest for me. Wish I could get it to look like that. Mine only shows up as sloppy. I don't think I have ever seen someone avoid (joke) doing hands by replacing them with heads. I would think you would choose the lesser of two evils.....

Crit- the bottom left head looks like he's got some crazy lips, or a major frown going on. Be careful to avoid exaggerating emotion a little too far.

The woodless graphite drawing still retains your mark, it's so interesting to see the idiosyncracies(don't know how that's spelled) of other artist's which aren't so obvious in finished pieces. The surreal updates are cool, but try applying perspective to some of the figures like the muti-armed heads for hands guy. I guess you were just frigging around with ideas, but it's still worth the practice.

Hey, the heads are showing some improvement, in particular the one all the way on the right on the first picture. Keep proportions in mind more though. An exercise for that is to draw a line, then practice dividing it in thirds by eye, this represents the thirds of the face. Then just slap on any old profile or frontal head view over those measurements. Got a new book yesterday, "Force: The Key to Capturing Life Through Drawing" by Michael Mattessi. It's given me a lot of stuff to think about, learned a hell of a lot about line yesterday. I think it would help you with your figure drawings too.

hey man, really nice pages. Your use of value is getting better, maybe you should train more you eye with lifedrawing and still lifes, and render it slowly, it's something i want to do too, to get use to render forms.

These updates are lookin' great, Fat Kid! You're rendering stuff is getting better and better, just keep doin' that crap! Some facial studies won't help. Maybe do some skull/planar studies to really understand the form of the facial structure and head. It's helped me a ton everytime I study that stuff. I'd like to see s'more realizm kickin' outta this thread. Keep it up! Study, study, study! You're gettin' there in no time!

HEY DUDE, i think your sketches looks great, but you can take advantage by doing lots and lots of lifedrawing, i mean, really studying waht you're doing, learning to see, learning how to measure, how to see the shadows patterns.
Your doing more than great dude, just keep the pencil sharp and keep studying.

Hey man nice progress on the rendering studies. shows a lot of promise and dedication. The one thing that I see from the last few posts is that the skin seem to sag and hang in odd ways. I would hit up some skull studies and then try to overlay the skin and muscle over top to see if it would help with the oddly laying skin. I see that there is a sadness theme running through the last few batches but the faces should still have a solidity to it.

I look at your pictures and I'm wondering why I am using only ball point pen. I must be really stupid or something. Maybe after this week I will find my pencil somewhere. I've also heard that there's a thing called eraser, which you can use to erase the lines that you've fucked up. Is this just a rumour? Good job by the way on the new drawings. Ostensibly you want what we all want. To draw from the imagination believably.
Bisymmetry is the phenomenon that occurs in many animals where one side of the body is mirrored on the other side to some extent. This is why we have two eyes, a symmetrical nose and mouth, two arms and legs etc.

hey dude, your faces are really good even if you rough the values. Sometimes when i look at your drawings i think you're eager to reach the rendering stage. Maybe if you take more time in the drawing and then focus on the shading? you could try that.

cool stuff you have going on here dude. you're doing well with the values; i'd say work on your lines more. for the parts that you don't render (and even the ones that you do), it would help to make the drawing a lot cleaner. dont make them too dark, but a little more contrast in the lines, yeah, it would make it a little cleaner and easier to read the drawings. try longer strokes sometimes too. nice job with the most recent portrait; keep up the good work. peace yo.

You can handle the proportions quite good only the abdomen area is often wrong. Also your outlines are sometimes a bit messy.
Anyway, I think you can already handle most of the "basics" for anatomy studies and livedrawings. Go on and post more!
