Are there any tutorials or any info you guys can give me on shading/rendering a drawing? I've seen some highly detailed pencils with outstanding shading and I want to learn how to do that.

Observation, observation, observation. Work from photographic reference or from real objects, and examine every aspect of how the light plays off the different surfaces. That's the most important thing to do. As far as tutorials or web pages with information on this topic, I don't really know...

When I'm working with graphite, I tend to alternate between my F or HB pencil and my blending stump quite a bit. (Unless if I'm just sketching--then I don't use a blending stump.) The blending stump is wonderful for achieving smooth tones and gradations, but you have to be careful not to get too smooth. Most real objects have some sort of visible texture, no matter how subtle.

I love using my trusty F pencil for shading. There's something about it that just feels so much smoother than the HB or darker grades.

1.You're not drawing an object, you're drawing the light that bounces off that object.

2.Draw the planes.

start shading in the direction of the object. instead of rubbing the pencil on the paper mimic the movement on the paper with the pencil on the paper as if you are runninghte pencil agianst the object . then observe it will comet you. patience is key
