While this may just be an exercise in "Photoshopping", there are a number of inconsistancies. The light source does not seem to define the form (which is essential). The key is to start with big brushes to define the form, then slowly go to smaller brushes to put in detail. This lack of form makes it very flat and the odd hue shifts and scribbly lighting effect are really hurting the background.

I think it was van gogh who said you should start painting with a broom and finish with a hair, bear that in mind.
When drawing an object in space like this consider the shadow it would cast on objects past it. IE the front of it's head and it's neck. This will help to make the object more solid.
Hope that helps...

What do you think you have "gotten the hang of Photoshop" with in this piece?
Is this anything more than a "playing with Filters and Layer Styles" doodle?
Just the visuals I see jumping off the monitor:
* There is no neck between the head and body
* The giant teeth are not attached to the head, they are floating above it, with a drop shadow across the top ones, no less! ACK!
* The background looks like a blue stripe above a green stripe with some black arcs and then some white arcs on the bottom, and then straight lines leading to a white spot in the upper corner.
Again, I ask. What aspect of using Photoshop do you feel you are finally getting the hang of? You've put a lot of time into this, I can tell. But, this piece is far from successful on so many levels, I do not see any Photoshop expertise.
Also, your name in bright red on a noticeably white background portion of your work is considered "bad form," in general, and is usually done by rank amateurs...
