i dont know if this is the right place to ask but anyway...what tools do you people use for drawing? what kinds of pencil, what inks, stuff like that. my problem is i dont think i know how to continue from the sketch. i always use a gel pen to trace the drawing, but that makes it look cartoony all the time. what should i do instead, how can i color without tracing first? generally speaking, i need advices as to how to make the transit from sketch to finished work. thank you all!

I'm a pretty cheap artist so all I use are mechanical pencils, a white pen-style eraser and computer paper. The only expensive tools I own are I couple of giant Bristol board pads and my drafting pencil which was fifteen bucks (the only reason I shelled out the cash was because the lead size is .09 which I like and it's weighted very well), but really the tools aren't what you need to be worrying about. You need to practice with all kinds of mediums and methods to learn how you like to create. Your problem could be is that you're just not sketching light enough, so until you learn how to do that, spend a buck and by a 2h pencil and use that to sketch and then finish your piece. I may have a Wacom and Photoshop and Painter and so on, but a better artist could draw in cold blood with a toothpick and it would probably turn out better than anything I could do.
That's all. Hope it helps.

This thread is being moved over to Fine Arts, Studies, and Discovery.
If you read the Forum Descriptions under their names, you will see that the Fine Arts, Studies, and Discovery Forum is "The technical side to art. Get help with honing your skills...
You can also try using the Search Feature, at the top of the page. This question has been asked many times before, I'm sure.

but you said you trace? that's like cheating from the hard work someone else has put in then getting credit for it

like i said, i im not sure about the technique of passing from sketch to finished work, thats why i traced, it gave me that feeling that i know exactlyhow far to go with colors. its true, i admit, shoot me: i love to oversketch!!! i guess thats where i get most of the problems from. i only use a mechanical pencil as well, never liked brushes, i dont have the same precision with them. oh, that reminds me: what should i use to color, something that makes the color look solid. with color pencils, and at high resolution scanning, you can clearly see that the color isnt solid. What should i use instead? or am i using the pencils wrong? :\
thanks for the advices so far, you guys are right and ill definitely try out new ways
P.S. sorry madster, wasnt paying attention to the descriptions, tips & tricks was the first thing that popped into my head and i didnt bother checking afterwards :bashful:
