he doesnt look rusted as much as he does burnished bronze. rust means that the metal will have been eaten away, jagged and mishapen in places, with holes and brown areas. perhaps to denote rust in the figure, desaturate this to greyscale and then paint in areas effected by rust, a few holes here and there. give a more mechanical feel to it, cause if it were human im sure it wouldnt let its armour succumb to such a state. remember, rust weakens the structure, itd be regarded as impractical by any sane person. the background could use some work as well.. not really digging the red floating blotches. keep it up! :)

Same here- There shouldnt be any highlights on rusted armor :D

A comment on his shoulders- They seem a little... uptight- Like he's shrugging. Try relaxing the shoulders more and pushin the sword and arms/hands farther down. Look for some reference for that pose, it'd be helpful.

i thot about it, and i was wrong to call him rusted.
he is actualy more like bronze, or more precisely he has some dirty worn out gold armor.

but my dude does have brown areas and he does have a couple of holes and breaks in the armor.
the thing where i fail, is that i never established what metal i was painting, and the word rusted just came to mind when i finished.
i shud of thought about what i want the armor to be.
this dude probably isnt human, hez just a zombie guardian.

hmm i liked the first version better, since in the second your colours are a bit off. especially the red horns..

in my oppinion it would be better to go all greyscale on the pic, then choose a lightly saturated main colour sceme by using the "seletive colour changer" (sorry had to make up that word since i'm using a german version of PS and dont know the english term), add some subtle dots of colour (for the rust) and change the lightsource a bit..

since it seems to be your goal to attract the viewers eyes towards the head of the guardian, I would recommend using the guardian's eyes as the main lightsource.

I would use a strong colour for the eyes that complements the main colour of the pic (like a bright green when using a red colour sceme or bright yellow when using alot of blue) and adapt the surrounding zones to the eye colour (after all, they would be affected by the yellow, green or whatever light coming from the eyes)

apart from that i really dig the helmet design - reminds me alot of the albumcover for sodom's "in the sign of evil"

Hope it helps abit..

hmm i checked out the band's cd, and ya the mask is alike exept its cloth.
i havent listened to the band itself, but i doubt its deathmetal, or folk metal, so i probably wont dig that.
well dude im the sort of person that gives up after like 2 versions, but who knows maybe il feel up to it, and do what u said.
but how in the world can i change the lightsource, all the shading info still stays in greyscale, so it will still look like there is the same lightsource. i dont really get that

hmm I guess you're right about the shadows..

I too hate to spend too much time on a picture (getting rid of mistakes-especially on a painted pic-can be a real pain).

I tend to put them on hiatus and move on to the next, avoiding mistakes I made unless I'm really feeling the picture.

Anyways... I still believe that at least the colour palette should be adjusted, but thats up to you to decide ;)

As for Sodom: well it's olschool (talking about early 80's) death/black metal in the vein of Celtic Frost, Posessed and Venom, although the band became a thrash metal combo in the 20 years following that album.
