View Full Version : Juan's Sketchbook - Ch.O.W. at the end! (11.13.05)

This is my first sketchbook on CA. I have been fascinated by fantasy art and gaming (D&D waaaay back...) and inspired by fellow artists and friends. I have read 2 books on Norse mythology but long for any real good artwork on the subject. The stories themselves make for some interesting reading and the imagination soars! These are just a few (and most recent) of my fantasy sketches, and I plan on painting them (in Painter) later on.

Nice start. The only crit that I can give is for your Dragon Master sketch. The thighs on the woman seem to be a bit long or maybe the calves aren't long enough. Other than that they look great. I like how the dragon comes down on the two dwarves. Ragnarok

These are fabulous. Great imagination, good dynamics, mostly good anatomy (madplanet's right about those thighs) great rendering.
You are doing that classic thing with placing the eyeballs just slightly too high, giving everyone too small a forehead, but nearly everybody does that for a while.
I'm gonna' keep watching this one for sure . Hope you keep it up.

I assume you're using a blending stump for the softer shading, and what kind of pencils do you use?
solorpower
September 4th, 2005, 02:45 PM
I mainly use a mechanical pencil (0.5 HB lead).... I know - some might frown at this wondrous pencil and some might not.... but I am impatient at sharpening other pencils. I rarely use stumps, it's all done with the 0.5 and fingers, and I work the tip until it's tapered, allowing for twice the area coverage, going really - really gently (almost like air) but very-very quick to get a consistent shade. I plan on carrying more graphites with me (and an exacto knife to sharpen - I hate pencil sharpeners with artistic pencils) But my main arsenal on the road, where I do most of my drawings, are 2 mechanical pencils, 0.5 HB extra leads, kneaded eraser, and white eraser for large areas. Most of my concept sketches are from memory (ie, human anatomy, dragon poses, etc) which explains the lack of foreshadowing in my sketches. My biggest weakness are hands, feet, and any wierd or offset pose as I would need to draw from life for accuracy, but I can get the concept or idea of the pose I want - most of the time.
More sketches on the way!!!

Here is a color rendition of Thor. His features are straight out of the Norse stories, but I haven't added the sparks that fly out of his hair. His body temperature is supposed to be mega-hot, I'm guessing hot enough to melt rock when he is pissed, so in another one I will add steam, plus he is super-heavy - he cannot cross the rainbow bridge (Bifrost that connects Asgard to Midgard) or he will destroy it by simply walking on it. Anyways, replies welcome!
Not totally finished yet...

your technique is intimidating. lol. no really, i like your work. a good eye for detail and shading. the environments arent terribly complicated, so that rules out any possibility of overkill, but i think you should work a little more on the battle scenes- and i say this from looking at the 5th peice down in your first post. at first it looks as though the (elf?) charcter is flying past the fellow on the floor, rather than towards him. this can be altered by a simple correction with the flow of his shall, hair, and other peices of clothing against the air.
im going to subscribe to this thread so i can watch how you progress. cant wait for the next batch.

Dragon Master #2 color layer. I added more color detail and reds to the dragon. Now that it's more red, I need to start to work on contrasting the girl and sky...(using complimentary colors) This is the darkest I want to take the dragon, I might actually lighten some areas by ading a mist along the ground between the girl and dragon.

Juan, these are looking really good.
A few crits, if I may:
The facial structure, from one character to another, seems to be very similar. I'd suggest doing some life studies or work from some photos to try and break that, otherwise everyone ends up looking kind of inbred :perv:
A good source for photo reference is corbis.com - membership is free and you can download decent sized comp pieces free of charge with no watermark logo on them. I use them for about everything.
Also, I sent you a private message last night.

Thanks for the crit Shane. Yes, I can get pretty trapped sometimes with faces, especially when I draw without reference, which is most of the time.
Here's an updated "Dragon Master". Probably will leave it "as is" for now, and work on other quick sketches. I really need to do more faces, and anatomy poses to get warmed up some more. :confident

Juan, the Dragon Master is looking good. I'd give her a little more cheekbone on the far side, and her hand holding the chain up is just wonky :P Have your wife pose for you holding some rope or a hose.
Also, I'd suggest the portion of the chain going across her red armband be positioned in the back of the arm - where it is now just does not look right. The other thing that is bugging me is her feet - not bad, but they look a little "boxy".
Aside from the above crits, this is looking good.
don't be afraid to rework something if it isn't going the way you want it too. Remember, you're the one in control - not the picture. Don't settle for something "as is", and never knowingly leave something incorrect.
Cheers,

I really like your work. You have a very accomplished hand with a pencil!
My only concern is that your people all seem to have a similar, scornful expression with a furrowed brow, and a slightly tilted back head...
I'd love to see a sinister smile, or more pics like the two dwarves fighting over the treasure as the dragon looms...they had great expressions!
excellent body of work regardless.

Red Goblin: I use mostly HB's for light sketching and darken it with the same, then I break out a mechanical pencil with HB lead which is great for adding detail where I want it. This combo works great as the detail work, which is tempting to dive into, is added last. I sometimes use a 2H, no lighter, for beginning work, but find that the HB is an all-around workhorse for me. Guess I just like those ranges of values for pencil work... :teeth:
Van: More to come (if I can get away from my homework...) :$
The Ghost: I kind of like the back-tilted heads as this type of pose is reminiscent of a serious "look" I want the character to have. I also like doing "angry" expressions, especially for characters designed for a combat role. I will try to incorporate different expressions, just need to break from habit! 8)

New concept. There's a little girl in Norse legend that is a member of the Aesir (Odin, Thor, etc..) and I thought I should add it as she plays a small but significant role in the myths.

Ze asspat: :moon: :cheerleader: Your pencils, Juan, are fantastic. Your basic proportion and rendering skills are really very well focused, and your control of expression and knowlege of the figure very good. It's one of the things that I've always loved about your work.
Ze Crit: :grandpa: :sadcheerleader: YOU NEED TO LOOSEN UP. Your work is painfully stiff. Stop drawing from your head and start looking a REAL PEOPLE. It will only benefit you in the long run. I don't want to see anymore superheros or supermodels or godlike people in this thread until you can draw the masses.
I want ugly. I want plain. I want normal people. Someone I could know. Someone we all know.
Because your people are so balanced, so technically "correct" they are losing their relatability, and therefore their overall interest.
You need to be honest with yourself with your work here - brutally honest. Because if you won't, I will be :$ :bashful:
It's not that far of a jump to go from where you are now to doing "real" people. Probably not even a jump at all.
Keep your people real, focus especially on hands and feet and GESTURE. People are not models or maniqueins. They're fluid and move and flow in unexpected but rational ways. Pay attention to this. It is vital.
Looking forward to more.
Cheers,
~Shane

Your last couple of pieces are really good - I can see a definate Todd influence on the dragons there :) -- do you have a dialog going with him at all? He's a good teacher.
Liked your lizard dude looking out the window as well for the DSG - Did you catch Holden's entry?
Regarding the Schmid book: I'm in that one almost daily and keep it as a constant reference while I paint. I'm also going to be adjusting my pallet to match his colors. I want to have a bit more control over what I'm doing compared to my target, if that makes sense. In other words, right now, I have a slightly smaller pallet with different colors than he does, and attaining certain natural colors is proving to be difficult. Anyway, I've got a new showing coming up and if I sell any of the pieces there, I'll see about adjusting the pallet accordingly.
Cheers mate,

Thanks Shane,
On your oils palette, it's good to have many colors. For me, I find that some colors are only taking up space and I hardly use them. One thing I've learned, the fewer the colors the more variations come out. It's good to experiment, and see which ones work for you. I have not done any oil painting in a LOOOONGG while! I miss the smell of turpentine and fresh oils on my palette. As far as my color palette goes, I don't really have one, and it will be interesting to see what Schmid has to offer. Looking forward to it (when I get around to oils....) ;)

Great sketchbook Juan, I really like merchant_sketch1_web.
The expressions on 3guys_web are wonderful.
I love the way you render, like in the valkyrie studies. But I would really like to see more loose sketching. Really let go, do quick gestures. Nail the important forms but don't spend too much time or rendering on it, render a little only where it counts. Your rendering, while being top-notch, makes everything look too meticulate. Some more gestural things like the merchant sketch would be great to see. I really like the 4guys_web because it looks solid and detailed, but also painted in a kind of gestural way.
Again, great stuff. I think things are comming along really nicely, waiting to see more.

Any one think that her tail is a bit short? I'm trying to keep it more like a Koi's.

the stylized waves are interesting. they will be more powerful once the main figure is defined. at the moment the taiil seems a little flat and almost 'cut out'. the edges seem to clean and it has that white edge on it.

Yeah, the fins need more work. I am not that happy with them so far, and another artist pointed out the hair style, adding more volume to it while keeping the flow...
So far so good, I should be done with this piece really soon.

Here's a WIP. Crits welcome. And I narrowed some problem areas of my own, but please regurgitate.

Progress:

Adjusting her legs.....it looks better grounded. I need to look at actual gold-laced boots to get the right texture and highlights out.

One more update......almost done.

I'm calling this one done as I have other projects I need to work on.....like LMS3

Well hello there! First off, WOW... I LOVE you sketchbook, especially the koi mermaid. Gosh, I wish I'd thought of it first. ;)
The crit you asked for on the Battle Angel: the figure is great, I think your anatomy and proportions are spot on, but I feel as though in the tighter rendering you're going too nuts with the shadows... she's toned and defined, yes, but she's losing the feminine softness I want to see (especially on her back, everywhere else doesn't bother me so much) -- I prefer her back in the first version.
Also, don't crop her feet! Never crop at the ankles, it makes her look half finished and the rest of the drawing/painting is too lovely to have this little eyesore. Crop mid leg, or draw the feet, but never crop at the ankle. :teeth: She also looks kind of like she might tip to the left because nothing is grounding her, and the position of her legs are off center while her wings and the rest of her are centered. I would maybe move the left leg (our left, not hers) to the left to reflect the symmetrical balance, or try painting in feet and something for her to stand on to resolve that.
The hair bothers me some, it looks unnatural. I think for 3 reasons, one being that it is blowing SO much more than her loin cloth, two, she is missing the shadow it would be making in her neck/back, and three, it may just be unfinished, but it is lacking the beautiful range of tones you got on her skin. With her gold armor bits, be sure to reflect some of her skin tone and the background/atmospheric colors in there, make it look like it is truly metallic.
Otherwise, WOW, dude. GREAT painting so far, and I hope that helps!

I'm doing a series of pin ups - and I will be posting some of these here in my sketchbook. I am also learning that I need my own style in pin ups.

Sketching along here.....and I need the practice now that I entered LMS3! This is my first competition, and I plan to give it my best, nothing less. Reading my past thread, I appreciate all the honest critiques and tips from those that have posted to me, and I look forward to hearing more constructive feedback from others! Nothing but inspiration in here!!!!!!!
Sooo, I have decided to sketch one of my favorite characters, (which I hope they cast a good actor to fit the role in the movie - and one that can act as a bad-ass Wonder Woman......

Finally got a decent self portrait of me done, as I was "pressured" by some friends here! I have painted other people in the past, but never one of myself. I mainly did it to see if I could - and I'm fairly pleased with how it came out. It was a quick one, and I plan on doing more as I get older....

Thanks for the crit on my work! And sweet works here! Just a question, when I go to do a digital painting, what brush should I use to maintain a sharper stroke? I'm kinda new at this, I have used the wacom intuos pad for only 2 weeks now and I am just now starting to get the hang of it... ( kinda ).
