Took a break from the oil and did this one.

http://members.cox.net/blackhawk9/spod/spod148.jpg

Retro - Not bad for a 10 minute job :D That oil is coming, it's a learning exercise for me right now, I've never used oils before and I'm running into a lot of problems I have to fix. It's fun though.

Oblio - Nice to see you again man, please do more SP's again sometime soon. This place has gone dead.

Ravaran - Nicely done, I would have liked to see a little more play with your edges. Right now all your edges are a little sharp, some softer edges could help unflatten spots and bring more form. Keep them coming.

Nice job everyone!
Blackhawk-pay attention to the shadow on the neck and chin, there could be more of a hint of reflected light under the chin to give it depth. It looks great!
Toaster- watch your proportions. draw it out on paper first. Your forehead is too short and eyes are too big, nose too long. great use of color
nova-good job....lets see more:D

@nova: i like that last piece, though you look a bit like from the planet vulcan :D

Retro: my latest experiments? show me yours i'll show you mine :D
when you'll show your painting experiments... i'll post my crapy sketches. come on - we can both learn and rock!

davi - it looks like you still are the man :D get that smile back.
Ironspy - you got Oblio's point there :)
Nova - superb values - strong post lines too :D Keep em comming

Toaster - umm.. lovely colors. The line on the left (edge of your face) bothers me like hell.

Blackhawk - thank you frined - here - i'm back for a day or two - depends on the time (it's hell here).
You rock harder and harder man - you're getting super good. That left eye is misplaced though :chug:

Toaster: Sweet, I love the colors you used, very bold!

Blackhawk: Damn that is sweet...though it looks like you have a cold :D

Ravaran: excellent use of negative space.

Obilio: Your growth knows no bounds....I can't believe how good you've gotten. Truely an inspiration.

MISPLACED FEATURES AHOY!!

http://members.cox.net/blackhawk9/spod/spod149.jpg

Benzo - Yeah, your right. I didn't notice much of a reflected light when observing, but every little bit helps and it doesn't hurt to help pop out spots. I'll have to make note of that next time. I also thought the shirt got a little flat as well, I could have used something else there.

Oblio - Bad ass man. Your getting better and better, you just never see it :D Great work and thanks. Yeah, I noticed something was funky with either the eyes or the nose. I think it may be the nose, it's too short and shifted for my actual features. It's my problem right now, I either hit the nose too short or too long. It's funny though how you fix one problem spot and another rears it's ugly head. I still remember the terrible time I had with getting the eyes on the same axis, ugh... lol. Time, practice, perseverence, and patience are what is needed.

Nova - Nicely done. Nose form, especially around the nostrils is kind of funky, but overall good piece, plus it's shirtless, and we can't complain with that :D.

Retro - I am taking my time, I'm still going to crank these out until I get it done. I find myself attacking it in spurts right now. I just need to really sit down and paint for awhile. Good work man.

Wizard - Nice colors man, perspective and feature angles seem odd, but your use of color is great. Very dramatic and very nicely done.

Toaster - Watch out for proportions and feature placement. Everything seems a bit elongated. Really look and you'll see it. Keep it up though bud and great work. Keep working and growing.

miasmak - cool effect with the colors, i need to learn how get crazy with colors

blackhawk - awesome, i'm a fan of purposeful unfinished work...if that makes sense

wizard of kos - cool, i can feel the statue-ness. it's dark and mysterious prolly cuz of the eyes.

oblio : you're getting better and better.. and better. try toning things, i mean try giving more of your surfaces a value. for example, on your last pic you could totally add some shading to the eyes and underneath your bangs going over your forehead. paying attention to things like that will make your drawings look more realistic. you could also add some tone to your cheeks to bring out your face structure.

crunchh : ahh very nice. definitely an interpretive portrait.

broken : sure it does, looks good to me :)

slowpoke : you have a cool line style in your latest portrait.. embellish that, add more lines and vary the widths. check this (http://www.geocities.com/putsthelotion/art/self010803.jpg) out. sorry to use this example, it was the quickest i could find :)

mia : i like the freedom in your portraits..

silvrain : Doves, that's bound to produce something beautiful.

coro : awesome.. keep painting :)

Looking great - it really takes some time before a head even resembles a sculpture - that's what I 'm been trying to get - no color really, just some kinda mass!

El Coro - ahh textures looks great - ear looks flattened the saturation though. neck looks a little flat too.

Silvrain - Nice work man, each one is getting better than the one previous. It's nice seeing that kind of improvement. Thanks for the words man.

Mia - Great to see you back again. Looking good except the right side of the face lost a little bit of form. Welcome back.

Slowpoke - Thank you. You did an excellent job on this one. Very nice job with the form on the face itself.

El Coro - Damn nice seeing you here. It's always great to see the big dogs join in with us. Inspiring work man.

Nova - Great job with this study SP, I need to do more of these, it's a great way to practice facial features.

Jhibbs - Thanks bud. I am working on an oil, which I am failing miserably on. I ended up wiping it, I absolutely hated it. I think I need to learn how to paint traditionally period, it was a real frustrating experience for me, but I gotta start somewhere. Nice experimentation bud. I'm up to 151 SP's that I've posted, about 160 if you count the ones I'm too ashamed to post... lol. How many you at so far?

Rockstar - Thank you and HAPPY BIRTHDAY man. I turned 21 acouple weeks ago, felt great to go skiing for my birthday and skip work for a weekend :D If your having trouble with noses and the mouth, then pull double duty and concentrate hard on working on those features. You'll never improve on those problem spots if your too afraid to make a mistake on them. I know, trust me :D

Crunch - Stylized, I like this one a lot, it has a lot of form to it, very nicely done.

Keyth - Meaty. You have great form on all of your SP's bud, something I'm still having trouble accomplishing. You going to go for a full color SP one of these days? :D Great work bud.

Farley - Be careful on the left side of the face, that side isn't interacting too well and it's flattened out. Give some more play between warms and cools and it should help you with the form in that spot. Keep it up.

First self-portrait that I've done in at least five years. I had to do an avatar image, so I thought I might as well post it here as well. Started out as a quick ballpoint pen sketch, and then a few hours in photoshop. It feels a bit more like a colored drawing, and less like a painting to me; I didn't focus enough on form when I did this.

Hey thanks for the comments Black Hawk, I'll definitely try even harder to incorperate the colder tones into the shadows, I keep trying to do that "backround through the face" style Andrew does so well [shrug].

Yeah jhibbs massive improvement! The last one looks good - might be some issues arround the mouth - hard to tell.

lpetty - next one try some nice sharp shadows across your face - it's way more fun :) And put some odd colors maybe!

nice lines retro - I have to try that sometime.

blackhawk-this is oficially the 210th day from when i started, although i have a few more than i need (probably more like 220) somewhere during the last two months i totally lost control of keeping track (because most of the last 1.5 months were traditional), i had to calculate the days and all. tis a shame, cuz id like to have a show of them (at my school) after a year and include them all, i got alot of photographing to do. :p

and about the oils, just buy some cheap huge tubes (winton and daler-rowney are cheap and big) and paint as much as you can. i bought high end stuff to start (gamblin) and theres no point, youre gonna make crap to start anyway (best advice my teacher ever gave me, its ok to make some real SHIT sometimes, its gonna happen :p takes awhile to get the hang of it, im just starting to after 2 semesters). also gessoed paper (thick, like bristol or watercolor) is a cheap fast way to have alot of painting surfaces that dont take up tons of space.
i recieved very little technical instruction at my school, as they dont wanna enforce any one style/idea/blahblahblah over another, not a bad way to learn though. kinda like how you started drawing, you didnt ask anyone how to use the pencil. slightly more complex, but think about how long youve used other things before you used them well.

just wondering, .who all is still doing this everyday and hasnt ever missed one (without making it up the next day with 2)? cuz it seems like its on a steady decline. i have no plans of stopping until at least a year, of course by that time itll be easier to remember than brusing my teeth (last week was the first time i missed one since september, and i awoke guilt-stricken in the middle of the night several times :P ).

continuing with the same style as last time, im finally feeling like im getting somewhere

brokencow: that is the coolest thing I've seen all month. That's f*cking amazing.

nova: the lip-biting sketches are damned amazing.

rockstar4783: minimalism rocks. wild colors, dude.

lpetty: very nice coloring. The texturing's a nice touch.

retro: damn, man. You said so much in a minimal of pencil strokes. fantastic.

farley13: the high-contrast set a great mood to that one. the one visible eye has great lines.

Crunch: I like how you're not shy about using random colors in your pieces.

Blackhawk: just awesome. The orange highlighting across the cheekbones rocks, can't wait to see that one finished

jhibbs: you've been doing this for 210 days? good lord. that's amazing. guess you don't have webspace to post all of them, it would be kickass to see the progression from day one. your style is fantastic. talk about dedication. I just started this few days ago and i've managed one every 1-2 days.

thenetbox - even if your doing one w/ out a mirror pay attention to the proportions!

Crunch - have you tirted one with just value? that might freshen you up!

pibb991 - looks great! some line/texure varience would add even more!

Blackhawk- yes yes it does look good as well!

I did the latest one on a solo groupboard... maybe an hour's worth.
For those of you who don't know what a GB is, it's an instrument of torture much akin to Microsoft Paint, but without any kind of useful pallette. Since you can't exactly save, I took a screen of the useless tools I had to work with, along with the pic.

Uh.. mi God.. wat gorgius stufi - oblio goes amazed!
Here is a Oblio portrait he did few days ago but didn't had the time to upload - duh...
Retro - no this is NOT my 2 hours assignment! (this is just few minutes)
Not much sleep here as you can see.
Darken - you rock.
Blackhawck - you rock!!!
Keyth - you rock!
Retro - YOu rock!
And so on... :D Everyone rocks here!

Retro - no - i feel like we're off the point a bit. I was looking for a 2 hours rendering job - some larger brushes... planes, VALUE, no hatch, just tones, smooth, realistic approach.
The FORM is realy STRONG with you :D Me wants to see values!
I'll try to do my 2 hours work just on those guidelines. I guess we should have tried even easier(??) goal - a 2 hour job for a sphere, or a cube! What thinks you, Her Retro?

strong profile on that last one!

Thanks on the pastel one, doin' these late at night, my vision feels about as lopsided!

brokencow - looks very loose! nicely done.

Oblio - looks good, don't be afraid of just shading anyhting lat looks under shadow ()below hair ie.

thenetbox - form looks pretty solid, but try to get some nice shadows across your face, don't be afraid to overshade :)

- mine is decidely flat, semi inspired by norman rockwell, tried to use color to define the form. pretty happy dunno: http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~afarley/me8.jpg

Signature: you working from a reference? It helps for the first few tries.

hed|lamb: everything you did with that is fantastic. The thick lines and black and gray, the exaggerated features.. do more. A-1, dude.

holycoww74: that turned out nicely. Painter, watercolors I assume? The eyes turned out to be a cool focal point to the pic.

farley13: niiice colors. On the watercolory one, it almost seems like the lower left of the neck is missing some of the warm facial colors. Otherwise, dang, really nice job.

jhibbs: ink washes? Man, even with classic media... The two partially colored ones are tremendous. Shadow's gotta be your strongpoint.

brokencow: turned out good. what program you use for that?

Blackhawk: The way you do noses.. man. Reminiscent of Burne Hogarth, absolutely fantastic.

saw the thread and did a quick sp. took around 2 hours. no sp is right without a cracked face. you gotta do it sometime. only thing that was tough was i couldnt get myself to do the face again i started with. i dont know how i did it at first. soo somethings changed as i worked on it. leadin to some facial structures that dont seem to look right. anyways. just a piece for fun. later =P

I profusely apologize for not doing any kind of commenting, so here it goes.

Farley - Thanks for the compliments. Your on the right track, keep up the experimentation, be mindful of the masses your drawing or painting though. Your stuff is still reading flat in spots. It's getting better and better though, keep pushing those warms and cools.

Killing - Thanks bud, where have you been? Show yourself again, we need another sp man :D

Keyth - You call that Rusty? Puhh, all of your SP's are so meaty, there's an immense amount of dimension to them. I only wish I could get the form you get. Everything just pops. Very nice bud.

Rusty - Thanks a lot bud. This last SP of yours is incredible. That nose just popped out at me, very nicely done with the colors. When are you going to finish off this sucker? Good to see you around again bud.

Mia - LOL, yeah, the one and only smile SP. I think it's the first smile SP I've ever done. I just feel too good right now to have not done one.

Daarken - Thanks man, your work is just spectacular. I've been looking over all of your Caran Dache stuff. I haven't commented much on it, but trust me, I love every bit of it, great work man.

MCM - Hey bud, great SP, good to see you pay another visit in here, what have you been up to bud?

Wow, it's great seeing the old crew in here again, now we are just missing Oblio, Jester, Lionel, and a few others.
