Practise, Practise, Practise!! (I'm a sucker for British English)

Practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise, practise....

I'm working with scetchbooks. (and digital too) They are A5 and have thin paper. I ty to do all my drafts and ideas in it. At this time I'm at Greenbook # 8.

Unified Animal Market Building of Stedtfeld Systems.

A red moon is shining over market building 340-di, the oxygen heavy air is yellowish and dull, because an effective calmative is constantly blown into it by large ground installed ventilators; to control the often overzealous traders and sometimes savage ware.

Here the interest is directed towards diverse life-forms, floating in the heavy air, walking on the ground or swimming in the water, wherefore the markets are usually built waterside.
The livestock is mostly kept underground in the multistory cellars, partly overground on paddocks.

Normal trading takes place in the upper floors rented by wholesalers; the venue is held in a special area of the tower which is round on ground plan.
Important guests may land on the roof, while others must enque at the ground entrance.

...was my idea for EOW round 6... but I failed in submitting, because cA server times run ahead of real time...

Nice sketchbook. My suggestion is to give more attention to composition in your digital paintings or drawings.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/odinsregen/sketches/cadsg946.jpg - Here for example there is'nt much space around the main subject so there is no focus. Especially on the bottom of painting more ground would be useful.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/odinsregen/sketches/ads59eslebt.jpg - Here everything goes too much to the left side of the painting and those children would look better if they did't have their legs cut.

So far my favourite is "the blob" :).
Keep it up!

Some more sketchbook stuff and my entry to POW1 on the bottom. It was really fun and I didn't draw panels in ages... no, not true >_<' there'll be a release of a short comic I did in Summer 2007. The anthology will be on sale first on the Leipzig Book Fair. Look out for the "Subway to Sally" Storybook. I drew a comic for the song "Auf Kiel" which is currently lifted a single. yay! :D
Anyway - my comic skills are so underground. Although I already received very helpful critique in the pow-thread, I'd love to read some more words about it. Thank you.

Since I have so much freetime and so few leisure to draw or photograph, I prepared an update on my sketchbooks for you :)

My eleven Sketchbooks amount to a weight of 3725 gram! :D 3,725 kilogram of sketches... sounds nice, doesn't it - I bet many of you have more... but I'm quite pround that draw in A5-sketchbooks since 2001, with more or less large pauses...

Hard to guess, what series was my starter drug on anime, isn't it?

When I startet this thread I was busy with Greenbook#7, at this time I'm still sketching in #10 (the upmost from above), while an unnumbered book (one of the brown ones from above) is already full... the brown ones and the tyrian purple one are from IKEA, the paper is thicker, still they are cheap and you can draw on the cover fabric :)
The stickers on my scheduler were made for the Comicsalon Erlangen comic convention. They are real Panini size. I still regret that I didn't draw myself as soccer player (that was the task - portrait yourself for the sticker).

July 30th, 2008, 03:09 PM
hello last one is looking great, the tones are nice, i think what is bugging you about the eye is that it doesnt feel like a sphere in a socket like it should be. I think the section between the eye and the nose should be deeper in. The lips seems a bit off perspective too on the left of her face, the left part of her lips should follow a curves that goes a bit higher, also her left eye seems a bit small.. Anyway nice sketchbook so far keep it up :)

Zeitwolf
July 30th, 2008, 04:00 PM
thank you WhiteC, that helped a lot! I didn't ever think about the lip.

sourgasm
July 30th, 2008, 04:01 PM
You were actually just barely off. Your main problem was more in the structure of the head, rather than the eyes.

I did a quick edit using liquify to adjust the eye on the left side of the canvas- pulling the right side of it towards center and moving the entire socket just a bit to the left. Then I lassoed the upper portion of her head and used edit>distort to resize it as needed (along with the ear as well). I painted a bit of a shadow on the nose. I added a little bit of highlight that would result from bounced light off of that panda fur. lastly, I simultaneously pulled the overall value down while pushing the highlights up to make the lighting more consistent (curves adjustment layer, new layer on top with a low opacity, low hardness brush set to pure white).

Maybe 2 minutes of work. This painting is really good. A real step forward for you. Congrats.

And nine under-1-minute sketches in OC...
426718

And, well, I worked on it. Corrected the skull, the lip, tried to correct the eyes. there's too much light on her nose und upper lip, or too few on the forehead and cheek?

I'll do a simple curtain in the background... maybe slightly transparent, so we get light from behind, too...

and I wont render this to perfection, I want the brushstrokes to be seen.

Why haven't I seen this sketchbook before?! Great stuff you have going on here.
Little bit of inconsistency issues around.. like the quality of line between your nautical unicorn hunter and the page two down from it is pretty colossal.
I really think you're getting onto something great in the last piece. Lots of expression, gorgeous and interesting stylization. I find it super appealing both in rendering and style.
Great work, keep it up please!

Kurjuus
August 1st, 2008, 07:24 PM
Cool stuff in here, and a great leap in quality from old to new.

The last piece is definitly going somewhere. You should consider adding a greater value range in the shadows. After it looks kinda odd if you compare the shadow under her chin and then that of the lips and also the hair, whcih is laking highlights currently. As to the highlights, the one on the nose is very confusing. It makes the light source inconsistent because it looks like it's lit from the viewers right, while the other highlights indicate something from in front of the figure. If that on the nose is supposed to be a reflection then you have to darken it as reflections from object are never as bright in value as actual highigts.
Oh, and blend most of the highlight with the darker values around them since they don't lie on such a hard edge.

Keep it on :)

Ryn, thank you. Yeah, I'm quite inconsistent... most times I do the absolute crap, then, suddenly, there's something neat I can be proud of... I think it's because I never think much before drawing. And it totally depends on the time spent with the unicorn-hunter-sketch and the quick-sketches above.

Kurjuus, thanks, I'm glad to hear that I may have developed. Thanks for your critique, too - I tried to spread values and darkened some areas on the woman.

Autumnal Dream, dankesehr! Next time, please, write in English - because I want everyone to be able to read what's written in this thread. ;-)

I consider the image finished. So much for values - now I should practise stuff, that I'm even worse at - colours, tints, depth, anatomy...

I know, there are still some flaws, but I can't be drawing on the same piece all time... it's not my Mona Lisa kind of lifepiece :-D

that drawing came out nicely, still some issues with one of her eye but the rendering is so nice that we barely notice. I really dig the sketch of the unicorn hunter looks like a dolphin mixed with some scarab hahaha
One thing that could help when drawing clouds, dont use hard edges brush too much.. the colors you did on your sky are nice, but they dont blend enough, they switch to fast from one tone to the other and hue to the other... you should try to smooth that up with a airbrush after, keeping some hard edges visible. You shoud also try a brush with one of its side being hard and crisp, and the other smooth.. some kind of a gradient brush if you know what i mean... this is really helpfull for rendering spherical stuff. keep it up !!!

heyyy nice improvement there, for your colors yes it comes with practice , and those study are a great way to learn.. in my opinion the most important part of color to learn is how to dose your saturation. Knowing when to saturate a color and when to desaturate it. A great knowledge of color comes from a great knowledge of light, so make sure your master your black and white tones also =) keep it up !

Hi, didn´t know you were here. ;)
Like your colour studys a lot, too. I think you could ad a little more saturated colours though. Maybe it could help you to view that apple (or another one if you ate it ^^) with stronger light so that the drop shadow turns really dark. To me, practicing that way is much easier as it helps me to see the colours right.
Keep on working! :)

@all, thanks for commenting! It's been some time, hemhem...
Algenpfleger has shown, that practise and understanding of the matter can be everything!
So in the little sparetime I have, I still make sketches.

@WhiteC: yea, saturation seems to be a crucial point. But hue and brightness are equally important. One can draw a totally saturated image, still it can look great. Works with one hue, too. One brightness should be more difficult *drop*
Thanks for the tip, though! I'm currently working on the saturation part. The colour triangle (like the one in painter) helps a lot with that.

@Katanasoul: yea, my life drawing almost always lack contrast and lush colouring... it's very hard for me to see the actual colour of a thing...

Well, I herduliek conceptual animal.

Concept for a themed art challenge about "futuristic animals"

Concept: gririk (Griricus chlorophyllus minor), pronounce like "lyric" with "gr" in front

In the early 2120s science finally succeeded in creating a breed of animal with chlorophyllous fur, that could produce part of its nutritions by itself. It took the researchers another 40 years to breed a stable small animal for everyone to keep in their homes. Also, man in his infinite perversion, reared the appearance of the so called 'gririk' to be cute as a dog puppy always wearing a little smile on its face.

Nice creature and head sketches lately and that Harmony is sure an interesting program. Don't forget to study anatomy though, apart from heads it seems to fall behind.

Thank you smuli! You're right, anatomy is one of my greatest lacks. It was one of my new years resolutions to get better at drawing the human body. I fear, I have no idea where to start. My plan was 1. draw from drawings 2. draw from paintings 3. draw from photographs 4. draw from life...

Here are some examples from my autobiographic comic. For procrastinating practise:

I love love love these comics! The concepts are both fuuny and mysterious and the style is adorable. I want to see more.

Everything that's been mentioned about your art thus far can be applied to the comics, but I tend to think that comics are more aout story telling then about beautifully rendered art (XKCD for example is fantastic, but freaking stick figures). As your over all art abilities improve so will your cartooning skills. However, I think you should keep the spontaneity of these comics and not over think them.

1. draw from drawings 2. draw from paintings 3. draw from photographs 4. draw from life...
Probably a good idea to do all of those but not necessarily in a strict order... Just do what you think is most beneficial at the time, if you want to learn how shadings/lines are handled style wise, draw from drawings, if you want to study skintones, copy paintings and if you get to draw/paint from life, by all means do that. But to learn the structure well, you need to study anatomy from books or DVDs alongside. I don't know if you know all this already but the authors people tend to recommend most are Loomis, Bridgman, Hogarth and Vilppu. Loomis' Figure drawing for all it's worth is IMO the best kickoff because he starts with the really simple things and covers widely things like perspective, lighting, inventing poses etc. Hogarth teaches better the anatomical structure: how the muscles work, where they are attached etc. Other ones I'm not so familiar with. Though I hear Vilppu's DVDs are great. It's well worth taking a look at some Loomis books here (http://fineart.sk/index.php?cat=1) if you haven't already.

@aimeemcfarlane: thank you. I love XKCD, too! <3 it shows me that everyone can make a webcomic. and it's so nerdy, too :D
My little autobiographic comic is published in my blog: Zeitgleich (http://zeitgleich.blogspot.com/) (German), En Jikan (http://enjikan.blogspot.com/) (English, not updated so regularly). Most of them are with text, but I was too lazy to translate them/not satisfied with the ugly font I used on those I already translated.

@smuli: those are some pretty nice tips! Loomis is great (and it's free, too). I'm in awe with Gottfried Bammes, who focuses on function of anatomy features. I'll try out the others, too. Vilppu looks quite modern, I like it.

I took your advice to heart and started to practise anatomy.

First I made some sketches to find out, where I lack the most. I found I know pretty much about anatomy (knowledge), but I have no feeling of how the different parts are connected to each other and proportions are totally off... also I found I like to draw butts.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/odinsregen/sketchez/anat02.jpg

Then I went to bed with my Bammes (Gestalt des Menschen http://www.amazon.com/Die-Gestalt-Menschen-Gottfried-Bammes/dp/3332016539/) and drew from his drawings
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/odinsregen/sketchez/anat03.jpg

And this thing I doodled in Sai (to get used to the tool again):

I practised to draw from ref, started with dogs (my great dane) so it is just practise without me being too disappointed of me, because it just wont "look right"
For a funny mathmatical reason noone will ever know, photoshop makes every page look different with the same "auto levels" algorithm. amazing

I really like your photo studies too :) Keep up the hard work, it surely will pay off. And hey I share the pain with picking colors...I never get them right. Seems I am a little color blind or something XD I also have no idea of how colors look next to each other...this always brings surprises.

BTW I think the ladybug from your previous post is REALLY impressive. Also like the ideas you have for your pics :D

Thanks rex-craft7!

:D sorry for my uncreative thanks. I'm surprised you like the snow pic!

Thanks Cyprinus. I have superior colour view (clinically proofed), but that still doesn't help... :/ I think it's indeed a problem of getting tricked by the colours next to the colour you need to pick.

Here are some lame sketches of the past few days. The third page and some sharks are from ref. Reffing is REALLY hard for me, equal if colours or shapes...

hey :)
with the colors the girl looks scary now - like she wants to beat someone up. I believe it's because of her bright eyes. did you use the greyscale first - and then colors way on her? I can´t remember ^^"

I like the colors in her dress but her left arm (the one in the front) looks flat because the shadows are so hard, and the midtone doesn´t change.

@omerta, thanks for stopping by! Yeah, make some comics, they sure are fun. And they give you so much more room to tell something than a single image. they are great to make conceptional notes

@trudy, I painted in the base colours fist, than added a shade layer and a lighting layer. and failed. thanks for your off-cA help with it. sorry for giving up ^^;

Here is some stuff I scanned.
These first drawings are from 2005 or 2006, on A3 O_o all from photo ref

Them crooked faces were done while on the telephone. the half face belongs to the sketch dump above
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/odinsregen/sketchez/100428und2006skizzen.jpg

These are from February and March, the middle stuff from ref was done a few days ago from photo ref. I like the Axolotl.
The comic page, the colour test drawing and the red houses are from March.

And here is what I did today: I opened imdb and randomly picked names from the starmeter. Five celebritiy women. And I tried to sketch them in a caricature way, with ballpen. I don't think you'll recognize them, because they pretty much suck.

Wow, I see a lot of different styles fly by here browsing through your SB haha, it's amazing really. However, the topics you've chosen for yourself are pretty hard to paint, all of them, because they share no similarities with real world situations making it hard to paint them correctly. Usually when trying to paint really heavy fantasy or personal stuff it's good to have a solid foundation - only when we know all the basics is it when we can create worlds of our own (that look really proper) so starting out with animal drawings (like you are doing your self portraits) might be helpful. I do see some observational drawings going on in your sb which is good, quite like those.
