Ive been into samurai armor( all armor for that matter) for as long as i can remember- but its only been recently that samurai armor has become my muse. These are all very recent. Of course samurai armor is BEAUTIFUL to look at and draw--but its allowed me to play with my own patterns and designs--usually inspired by direct reference of japanese/chinese patterns/designs.

these first two were done IN the metropolitan museum of art--in the armor exhibit. Its alot of fun to go to art museums--or a museum of natural science--and draw on location (repertoige)(sp?) the pen and inks were from direct observation and i really didnt take any liberties--just drew what i saw

i used a refillable sume ink brush--you have to re-purchse the handles which are full of ik--but its like using a brush with ink( except you dont have to dip it--just squeeze the handle)

just as a side note to anyone that cares--i find the museum of natural science--im sure your city has one--holds alot of reference material for cultural costumes, patterns, designs, etc...great for reference and inspiration!!) im sure im spoiled by NY's though--and drawing from life/observation has a good energy to it--and you get out of the house !!! phew!

this is a sake bottle design i did digitally using the first pen and ink drawing

next is a LITHOGRAPH which is a printmaking medium --you draw on a metal plate with a lithograph crayon( similar to a china marker) and do alot of steps -- but basically you eat into the plate with acid then wipe off the drawing --then roll it with ink ( getting back your original image) then run it through a press onto paper/or in my case a yellow ochre posterboard---used a magenta colored ink

and lastly a piece playing with flat patterns and trying to convey space at the same time--thank god for PS--allowed me to change some colors and contrast to improve it alot

Sweet merciful crap!

Amazing! I especially like the last one and the drawing with the horse. Nice work man.

The one on toned paper makes me think it would be cool to see a giant, samurai serpent...... I can picture it.

Ty impressive!

They have a very strong graphical identity. Especially the first, and the pinck one. All the armor variations, and the simmetry give the compositions a nice balance.
even if completly different, I can't help to think of Klimt.
Don't really know how you could improve them., so no crits from me , sorry

you should colour the horse rider,..

Hey ty thats some cool stuff you have there. The first 3 are my favorites. Have you ever heard of this guy, his name is Sergio Toppi an italian comic book artist. Its really hard to get a hold of his work, figured you mght dig it.

Ill just jump on the praise pile here and say awesome stuff dawg. I REALLY like the last one, with the flat patterns, please experiment more with that! I think that could go in some seriously awesome directions. Masamune Shirow sometimes scans in flat patterns and textures and incorporates them into his art, If I had my Intron Depot iI'd scan some examples :(

I'll be the next to throw my words of praise to the pile! I share this interest with you Ty and I think you've done the Samurai proud! Very nicely done. There is a definite Asian feel to all of these pieces and you should be proud. Thanks for sharing them!
