Welcome to my sketchbook!
My name is Christopher and im "only" 17 and i draw very actively, im studying Graphical Communication here in Sweden, and after i graduate i would like to go to a artschool in the states majoring in "Illustration". But nothing is impossible.

I am currently following anatomy/life drawing dvd's and i have seen the "head", "neck" and i am currently whatching "upper torso" and sketch after that in different angles and such.

I hope you like my stuff and feel free to drop a comment or valuable tips :)

So here we go!

Yeah ive been thinking of that as well and i will draw from other artists, tutorials and real life. Been critical to that before because then its not "my" art.
But now i know its essential for getting more training. :)

Thanks for writing OleOlsen

Sorry for lack of anything.
But now im starting to get my confidence back and starting to find a fun style :)

I see some good stuff here.
Most of the anatomy have quite many mistakes. You should do more referenced drawings with all the time examining how things are drawn. You mostly have the basic shape and skills to draw, so the thing is to get more and more accurate. Do not be afraid of doing mistakes. Be happy if you spot one when you draw, and try to find a way to correct it. :)
I really like those thumbnail works on the last post. They are very nice.

Keep this thread up and dated!

not much to crit. i liked your little action scenes/environments(?). what i can recommend is that you try to work on fuller, more anatomical forms. post some full figures and in various positions so we can see your grasp of anatomy. what youve posted so far is only a peice, and i think with your motivation you can do quite well. hope those dvds work for you as well as their supposed to.

also, you seem to love the exagerrated breast approach. ah, to be young again.

Lazy

A submition for Creature of the week :)

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/6782/conceptartorgsketch0187qr.jpg

First time i do a creature.

Description: The messenger of death appears in your presence seconds before you die and if you are lucky to spot him, he will gaze into his scroll which holds all your actions too see if youre worthy of further existance . A scroll hovers around him where the name's of the soon to be dead are written in blood and because of the fact that many die everyday, they usally are seen in merged forms of four, they never speak physically, only by telepathy.

Hey, that bar drawing is very succesful (especially the sofa).
I respect your practising power, that is very good of you.
Maybe, that will be better if you can also focus on some primitive objects, life objects to improve drawing capability, before passing directly to conceptual stuff (but that doesn't mean not to draw conceptual)
Keep on...

I am having one issue with the drawings......PLEASE SHARPEN YOUR PENCIL! It's a simple concept but it does make a difference.

I usually use a very unsharpend Graphite pen for picking up the form, then go to detail and shade with a 0.3 mechanical pencil

And now for a semi-creature sketch!

http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/8458/sketch030thedevilsadvisor9hl.jpg

The Devils Advisor

This creature is one of the more intellectual creatures in the netherworld, therefore having the the important and loyal job of the devil himself's advisor and is always found by his side. The horns grow more in vertically than horisontally, making him stand out from the brute demons and warriors showing of his difference from the rest, suggesting that he is more of a strategist than a warrior. His brain size and capacity goes beyond the human understanding and his brain continues to grow behind his human like cranium extending to his back which is shown by the swollen guts behind his skull. He speaks only when commanded to and talks in a calm understanding tone talking the finest of the languages in the netherworld which only the devil himself and him can speak, therefore making him very trustworthy. He hangs down from the roof of the throne and rarely leaves it, when he is not needed anymore he simply slides into his upper part.

I feel that a little explanation gives it more life :)
Crits and comments always appreciated.

Followed a portrait dvd but with my own subject,

well man, you're coming along. Watch blance, and feet placement. A lot of your characters (not the life drawing stuff) have broken legs cause the feet are turned to far in or out, the people are not standing in a way that is possible. i know you have probably seen cartoons stand that way, (personally i am annoyed when two part, and one part body characters do it) but remember a human being can't do that. watch how far your own feet will move, then see how far they will move comfortably and draw them like that on your characters. Also, your eyes feel a little flat and don't help define form. Your sense of weight and proportion need a little work too, but that comes in time. I deffinatly see potential though, and i love the fact you experiment in different mediums.

Recursive_End
February 6th, 2006, 12:05 PM
Really nice, escpecially the second one.

Nice!
Concentrate on what we should see, and what we shouldnt. For exemple, the finger nails are all lighted the same way...but they shouldnt.
Other than that, keep those studies going. And try to start with just the general shape of the body before going on the rendering. :)
BTW, nice idea in the character face :) good contraste between the face and his mind.
Continue on experimenting and trying different techniques until you find one that's confortable for you.

Very good. You're practicing alot, and i can already see some imprevement.
Your shading looks good, but try to many layer of them. Do a first one, very dark. Them gradually go to the lights. Also, hatch in two different ways, make the shade more consistant.
Also, give a bit of "rythm" to your lines. Make it pop out in dark areas, and hardly noticeable on highlighted places.
Your getting the hand on cool ideas, and those enviros looks great.
Keep posting !!!!!!! :)

OK, these look good.
About the shading, the good point is that you're not afraid of shaping the guy.
Now, try to make the shading more smooth. Dont hesitate on doing one really dark area, then from (on) that area, make the brighter layer over then go progessively to the highlighted zone.
I hope you understand what i just wrote...i gotta stop wine :S
Keep it up!

Not that bad...

I would still recommend that you work on you anatomy a bit more, some of your drawings seem to have some problems with the ankles and wrists. I would also recommend that you don't pencil in everything, just like in some of your colored drawings and paintings, the highlights make a big... BIG difference. However for someone younger than I, I must say that you have great potencial to being a great artist.

About more soft shading, i dont want to make it to soft, then im afraid it will all blend to much and it will become boring, but i should try!
About starting with dark areas and going light, thats pretty hard on paper, i dont want to do it all with a ereaser.

Hey, Lazy! The improvement on your anatomy studies earlier on this page just blew me away. Those are some awesome torsos. Keep it up, and use reference!
Other things that impressed me:
The hand studies on the first page were well done, as were your many environments. I like that you did a page of rock studies. Rocks are surprisingly difficult to draw, with all their edges and planes. Your clothes studies are looking good, too. That's something I need to work on as well.
I like the irony in your robots picture, but I think the pencil rendering was more successful than the colored version. Everything is basically the same value, and almost all the colors are warm. My advice would be to cool down and maybe lessen the intensity of the colors of the surroundings while really brightening up the colors of the droids.
Great sketchbook! I hope to see more soon.

About them, i think doing longer strokes for the cross hatching would really help getting a nice form. Especially on faces (cheeks, foreheads).

The Infamous Bird Man!

http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1258/02theinfamousbirdmankx4.jpg

Story:
Under the early eighteenth century there was a story going around of a mad old man who lived on a small island in the Pacific Ocean, he apparently once fell of a cliff on his island and was saved by a massive bird. After that life changing expierence he commited his life to learn how to fly so he one day could help that big bird when it is its turn to fall.

Recursive_End . Thank you very much!, yeah i know the chest is flat, but that is because i usually draw a bigger chest, wanted variation.

Nice progress you're making! I like the fact that you had enough willpower to do mundane scenes like the inside of a house, rather than going straight for the juicy fantasy landscapes. That kind of self control and commitment will do you good.
Your album cover is looking nice, but I don't like that brown shape between the guitar and the band members. I don't know what it is, and it's line doesn't really go with the line of the guitar.
Tips for coloring: Think about color temperature. Make surfaces facing the sun warmer, and make shadows cooler and less saturated. Few things look weirder than a very saturated shadow. For colorizing a grayscale image like this, paint in "color" mode, and use opacity, flow, and hard/soft brushes to your benefit.
Tips for oil painting: Get a rag to wipe off your brushes! And just have fun. I'm not exactly an authority on oil painting. Be sure to clean the brushes thoroughly when you're done.
Good luck on all your projects. I'll be checking back.

"The Owl" [Reference Used]

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/9691/eaglekb7.jpg

Around 5 inches high and 7 inches wide.
I skimmed through the "National Geographic" magazine, i thought as a warm-up that my very first painting was a study, so i picked the owl, so this is a study.

Moai : Thanks mate! I really appreciate your very informal and constructive comments, they can be quite rare.
I'm thinking in my head that if i want to become a concept artist, i won't be doing fantasy landscapes all the time, so i try to mix up my subjects.
Hmm i can kinda agree on the brown shape above the guitar, it was mostly to cover some of the band-members faces.
Yeah im trying to keep the colouring placement in mind.
Thanks once again!

Your lines look quite good. Especially your life drawings.

Your value studies look a bit flat however. Very evident in the man with a jacket at the top of the page. THis can be seen also in you paintings. Maybe try to use simplified values and big brushes to study this?

Nice progress here, man! I like those kiddy illustrations. Your recent speedpainting of a path through a marsh or a forest looks like it could be the start of a great picture. The lit part in the center looks really nice, but the rest is too dark. I'd really like to see more of what's going on there, so perhaps put some lighter details around the edges. Or not, your choice. It's just a speedpainting, after all.

good work on the pencil stuff, I like the rendering! Watch your proportions in your figurative drawings though, the are a bit off sometimes!
Also watch your value- and colorwork in the digital paintings you do. Quite often the colors get really messy and dirty and the values can be pushed far more! Maybe try to work a bit more with full-opacity brushes. This way really helps to get a better sense for form and value, moreover it is fun as hell, just try it!

Very nice work here! If I could make a suggestion to you it would be, try using bigger brushes to mass in color. When you use small ones they tend to look scratchy. This isn't always the case however, check out the thread in Finally Finished by SCRAWNYPAWS. He uses a technique that has alot of hatching and in color and it looks incredible. But with artists like sargent that have alot of brushwork, it is better to use a bigger brushes.

Some crits: It's been said here before, but try using a larger brush. Meatsworthy passed on this little nugget of wisdom to me a few months ago, and I've found myself repeating it mentally when I paint ever since:
"A pretty good brush rule of thumb is to find the largest brush for the job, and then put it aside and use an even larger brush."

Update = I followed Maoi's advice and worked a little more on it. Thanks mate!

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/2313/bluemountaingliderhg7.jpg

Blue Mountain Glider

"This peaceful creature lives high up in the mountains and glides around above the ground.
The fur keeps it warm when it is gliding about around the coldest parts and has soft organic bubbles under it so it simply bounces of any sharp stones or pillars if it should collide.
The "gliders" are held up by the thin "arms" that hold it like a tennis-net.
Because of it's peaceful nature sometimes birds rest on it and lost or tired travelers can jump up on it's back and ride it until they find a familiar spot again.
The Blue Mountain Glider is very quiet and could easily glide past you from behind without anyone noticing so it is a treat for mountain climbers to spot these creatures gliding around due to the fact that there only live around 2-4 Blue Mountain Gliders on one mountain."

Something odd happened to her jawline when you colored it digitally. In the pencil drawing it curves naturally, but it seems to have been cut short somehow in the digital painting. The shadow under her chin seems too dark as well.
I'd recommend going out and getting a figure drawing book by Hogarth or someone and learning the universal forms and structure of the body, rather than copying from photos, so you can invent your own figures more successfully.

For the "EOW 57 - An Underworld"
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=99343

http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/9039/underworldcopynb5.jpg

An Underworld

Similiar to the "The Kola Superdeep Borehole Project" where scientists attempted to drill as deep as possible into the earth's crust which started in 1970 and ended in 1989, the project was resumed in 2012 with far more interesting results than in the former attempt. After intensive drilling for months they stumbled into a hollow space with a cooler temperature, once they sent a team down into the hole the team at the surface got a mindblowing transmission.
"It's.....it's a tree..it is absolutely massive!!!"

Once the news spread it took the world by force, scientist's were scratching their heads trying to figure out a theory for the odd placement of this "tree", religious foundations refused to believe it at first and later on started to call the place "hell", "underworld" and started to quote old writings.
Until today the "Underworld" which it is called by the public is not solved yet but research is still under way.

Hey hey hey!! It's been a while, huh? These latest studies are really strong. The colors, values, and brushstrokes are all great. However, I have to ask, you aren't color-picking from photographs, are you? You'll learn a lot more about color and value if you just judge with your eyes, rather than color-picking. I only ask because the colors and values are so darn good!
It's nice talking to you again and seeing some art.

Moai : Hey mate! long time no see. Thanks for the feedback and yeah during these studies i have used the colorpicker on most of the colors, do the studies mainly to help me paint without the use of a scanned sketch first so i think about how i build it up meanwhile i worked on them, but of course i should refrain from using it so from now on no more colorpicker!, didn't use it on the one above either, tried a pic with a dimmer light source.

Hey there,

i really like what your doing in this SB, trying out many different things to copy from google:P, which makes it interesting. And i think there working, your digis have soo much improved, i really like the colours used in your last digi, very nice. Remember to get that book from Hogarth that someone suggested on page 8, that will help you even more, like they said. Keep it up with it all and dont stop, the journey is only at its beginning, thats a nice quote :D

Creature of the Week #92 - The Architect

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/4808/thearchitectsoc3.jpg

The Roobs are comical race of small sluggish creatures who can be distinguished mainly by their different wooden masks that they carry and that is only one if their many "technical achievments". They are also funny in a sadistical way for their odd method of building new homes, they take random objects lying around and throw into a pile without any thought and then enter with the hope that it wont fall apart instantly. This method leads to many sad deaths among the Roobs but ironically they are called "the architects" by all other creatures as a running joke, but still they stand proud of their craft.

Qxzi : Thanks for the feedback mate!, i'll look into that book soon.

Interesting sketch-book. Keep it going! I wish I had the same routine of making real-life studies as you do. I don't think I painted from 'real life' since art-school, seven years ago... never really liked it (but it still is the best way to learn.)

Here's the Character of the Week, The Overprepared Backpacker. I had little time to do this, mostly because i forgot the deadline and realised it close to the end.

Wow, Lazy! You're technique has improved by leaps and bounds since I last came here. Your brush technique has this beautiful, smooth look about it, and your handling of light and color is much better than it used to be. Nice job, man!
As far as crits go, your figure work still needs some improvement. Also, try to be more consistent in your shadows. That last crit was a reference to your Backpacker ChoW. Look at those shiny things on his pack (excellent job on those, by the way). For the upper objects, the light and speculars are on the right side, but on the lower objects, the highlights are on the left side. The shading on the guy isn't consistent, either. Also, add some reflections to the water, and increase the value difference between the water and the surrounding dirt. And sharpen the edges of the man's shadow.
See you later! Keep up the improvement!
