Hey all

I am starting to get into painting and tomorrow I am going to purchase materials to get started with oil painting. This may be lame, but I want to paint along with some of the old Bob Ross videos. I see the brushes that he uses and I am wondering if these are common brushes that one might use to paint a house or are they more specialized? Are the hairs on the brushes going to be different?

I am not just asking for the specific brand of kind that Bob Ross uses but rather if those large paint brushes used in oil painting are the same as one might find at the local hardware store.

Thanks :bashful:

alot of the brushes he used are simple house brushes.

there is a line of bob ross brushes, but they are crap.
bob himself would never have used them!

instead, look at what he used,
and then try to find them in a better brand like utrecht or simmons.

typically his brushes consisited of:
flats (ranging up to 2 inches or more)
fans (sable and bristle)
round stiple brush. (about 2 in)

thats all i remember.

For the effects he created, a house brush is fine. Just be sure to get top grade REAL white bristle brushes, not the synthetic kind. Be aware that these brushes sometimes shed bristles more than the high end artist's brushes.
