Cool stuff.

I'd recommend you do some research on Japanese armor and weapons, along with clothing and such as well. Just some basic fiddling with google could bring up a bunch of useful things.

A few points to make:

Katana are always worn edge-up, slung through the belt on the left-hand side, with the tsuba (handguard) approximately in-line with the bellybutton..

Tachi, however, are worn edge-down and attached via loops like a cavalry sword. They are usually a bit longer and/or curved. Generally, though, a tachi and a katana are the same blade in different mountings.

Anyway, just a few tips about swords. Some general research about yoroi (armor) can benefit you alot.

Keep at it. ;D

Looking really good, I love the strength of your linework, namely the way you add weight to the lines in such a way to emphasize the stresses and weights on the forms (most noticably in the impaled guy).

One thing I notice though is that your charcters arms are too long, at least if you're going for verity. The extended fingers should come down to just about mid thigh. Actually, I think it's more that your legs are too short than the arms are too long. Anyway, if its the style your going for for the game, disregard all that crap :)

looking good as studies--very simplified though --theres alot of room for patterns /details/ etc. on the armor

i hope you exploit that---but if its for UT you might have to work simplified huh?

textures don't have to be simple at all.
i only stayed simple because this was a 1:1 piece and i was basicly just learning how the actual armor worked.

drawing the armor will be much more natural to me now so i can do more detailed stuff in the future.

Mark_Li: what do you mean about the edge pointing up? Someone told me this before but i guess i didn't really understand it.

Lono: yeah i lost all my references in my great davi E drive crash of 2003...

Azulblue: what do you mean by chinese feel? what makes it seem more chinese than japanese?

Hi Davi.

the thing with the edge is quite simple. If you put the Katana in the sheath, the edge should look upwards so that the back of the sword makes a downward bow (look at the mouth of the smily thatīs the direction: :( . The Katana is just put into the belt (Obi) normally in about a 45 degree angle without any further fastenings. If you have a Tachi, you have a system of fastenings and the sword is hanging with the back upwards in a upward bow (again smily-mouth: :)).

I tried to find some pictures but all the Iai-Do links I know just have action photos with the sword out of the sheath.

Hope this could help somehow

Fipse
(whoīs done Iai for some time ;))

Just found this links of some friends of mine:

These guys are wearing Tachis, you can see the fastenings - I suppose the Tachi is more for armour wearing, where you donīt wear the Obi ...

Hey Davi, nice sketches but there is one crit.

The way you slant your figures. I know the body kinda slants diagonally from head to toe from front to back but actually, right in the mid-shins area the ankle and feet go the other way. It's almost like a curve.

ok thanks i think i understand.
may main problem was is that i didn't understand how much the actual swords curved and i drew them pretty straight.

Bathgate66, i think i slant my figures because i draw late at night and i'm falling over.. but thanks!

hi,davi
It will apologize, if feeling is worsened. sorry.
Your work is wonderful.:D

The reasons which look in China are a hood and the worn-in layers clothes.
Furthermore, it is one of them that the border of clothes is also broad.
A samurai is a junior fighter in Japanese aristocrat society.
That what covers a face is attached are only samurais restricted very much, such as an officer commanding.
However, it cannot but be a small problem if a design is pursued.
The culture of Japan and China is well alike.;)

Off topic., Sorry davi ...

Hi Mark,
Iīve been doing Muso Shinden Ryu, too. Itīs afaik the most popular style here in Germany. But after 5 years very intensive corean Hwa-Rang-Do I always had problems with the japanese Language ;)
