When you were young what age did you start getting good at?
Well lets see.
Right off the bat I was good at knocking my head into things, walls, cabinets, people... you name it.
It took about two years (when another sister was born), then I became good at talking, so good in fact, you can't shut me up. Nor can you tell what I'm talking about.
at about the age of hmm 6 or 7 I became superb at standing on my head, then at 9 I spent more time walking on my hands then my feet.
It wasn't until high school, probably around age 16 that I became good at BS'ing and all that dry humor stuff.
Then, time passes and here at age 32 I"m GREAT, not just good at all kinds of things, like rambling, bsing, forgetting, and I'm still going strong at bumping into stationary objects and tripping over invisible ones.
As far as art is concerned, define "good" for me. I think good is relative to your perception of it, yes? no? Its good to feel good about yourself, yet not good to ever feel like the immortal superhero... when that happens you go the way of elvis and live out your life on some backwoods ranch and take pictures with bubba to post on the net. (wait thats not elvis, that was someone else, morrison (sp?) )
I will always have room for improvement, room to learn and discover. If I ever start to think "hey I'm GOOOoooooood" I need someone to slap me and maybe take away my meds.
I don't think there is a finish line, its a neverending journey, just without that cool furry thing to ride on in the clouds.
I suppose you could define a ranking system, yet can you? You can compare yourself to yourself, in which you would be able to ask "am I better than before?" or "have I progressed as an artist?"
Or you could compare yourself to others, in which case your reasoning would be? (answering myself)... perhaps so you could judge wether you were reaching our goals? I do look at others art and it helps me sort of in an odd way form intermittent goals and ALWAYS puts me in my place (right there, under the stairs) I look at others art to see them improve too, and in professionals art, I always see room for improvement... even if I'm drooling at what they created and feel like giving them a pat on the rump.
Are you still reading? (wow, i'm impressed if so)
Just always improve, always draw, always SEE the world around you, discover the lines and colors and values... then you will always be good. But sometimes be bad, its good for you.
take care

oh... and yes you'll get better if you keep drawing! Keep at it! Just draw and study draw and study!

Personally, I'd define "good" at art as:
Having an understanding of what it is you're drawing and accurately representing it, and using skill alter structure and proportions in a knowledgeable way, if you so choose.
And how long it takes is inversely proportional to the amount of effort you put into it and directly proportional to the amount of time you spend doing it.
That is, hard work + constant work = quicker improvement.

sadly no you will never get good.... unless you spend gruelling hours of backbreaking almost slave labour to become even slightly good. Then there is painting which is even harder and takes year upon year upon year to master, remember its 80% study and 20% talent and a lifetime of hurt and sufering to create beauty... :)
