i have no clue if a thread like this has been started before but i wanted to know what type of music people at concept art listen and what music inspires them.
my musical type varies with mood. but my favorites are Tool, the Doors, Pink Floyd, and occasionally moby.
i think music has a huge influence on me. does it influence your art or is it just for fun? thanks all

Tom Waits......
I see so much twisted shit when I close my eyes and listen to his music...
Crunch
March 31st, 2003, 01:42 PM
tom waits...hm i need to look him up. is he hip hop, metal, or what? i will def look into that.
ty yeah some sound track stuff is good. but i tend to like the musical artists who are not in it for the money. the ones who do it because it drives them and they love it. im not into the new poppy junk that is on the raido. i love radiohead...but only in certain moods and in lower quanties.

well i agree there is alot of JUNK on the radio--but all the "pop" artists i listed, as far as i know, write their own music--so their just as legitimate as unpopular artists in my opinion.
btw--how do you know if a musician is in it just for the money? if theyre succcessful?
if you want to hear some unconventional stuff check out some of the trip hop bands i listed like plaid and boards of canada

Tom waits is hard to explain. Kinda bluesy...sometimes.
He is one of those guys you love or hate. There is no in between.
I suggest listening to Bone Machine first. It is some of his best stuff.

yes Tom Waits is very difficult to describe. hes a good mix of jazz, blues, rock, folk, soul, and art rock...

nice...well im glad this post is going well...i dont get too many responces from my work...hmph...
well as far as legit music is concerned i think you can kinda feel if they are in it for the money or not. that is hard to explain. if they stay true to their roots no matter if it is popular or not is a good way to look. being original is a biggie on my part. i hate hearing bands or groups or whatever who just sounds like some cover band...just my opinion though. also the lyrics have to be nice for me to dig them. thats why i love tool...alot of symbolism. pink floyd is more upfront but there is a double meaning in alot of songs. wow im ranting arent i? whoops well thats all i have to say about that....

Tom Waits IS a good choice for inspiration - no one else has a voice like that. And if you like him, you might like Nick Cave - pretty twisted shit there, too.
I've been listening to Tool's Lateralus almost exclusively. Brilliant album. Other current favorite is Explosions in the Sky - instrumental post-rock from Austin, TX. Good stuff.

Nick Cave is good.
If anyone is interested Nick Cave's brand new album is available for streaming from www.anti.com
Which, ironically, is the same label as Tom Waits.

I listen to Enya, Dead Can Dance, Viennateng, random bass techno, and maybe some orchestrated FF songs.
I tend to write and draw in the epic style (IE Dungeons and Dragons). So, that explains the music choices.

yeah ff orchestrated is definatly cool. but for me it is only in moderation. i used to be a ff junky...now i just draw alot...

I read that you can get creative with music, but only if you listen to music without lyrics, avoid music with large, sudden changes.
Classical, jazz, electronic and insturmental are a few recommendations.
Recommendations on a few things you could listen to
. Beethoven: Sonata No. 14 in Csharp Minor Op.27
. Brahms: Concerto in a Minor, Op 102
. Snow Flakes are Dancing by Tomita

Listening to albums or radio is fun when working, but I heard this theory from a friend of mine who is doing animation, and it goes a bit like this:
You shouldn't listen to music while working,
cause it affects the way you draw (duh!)
we are to sensitive to it, and we can't really control the final output.
guess it is fine to listen to stuff when you are doing a single picture, but if you are drawing pose number 509 for mickey mouse you should be able to keep the same lines trough the entire series...
what do you think? does music affects you to much?
Oh if you are into Tom Waits you should chek out "the blind boys of alabama" they made some awsome covers on some of his stuff (and Ben Harper makes a guest appereance on one of their cds)

well yeah for work...but when you are doing art for art sake and not for a job...i think we should let music effect us. the world would be a extreemly boring place without music.
mitch: old school is great sometimes.
pibb:converge is great but only when you are in that pissed off i want to kill people mood. it lets me draw some crazy stuff.jimmies chicken shack is great. i lost my cds of them but i gotta download them now...

Track #3 to Fluke's album Risoto....'Kitten Moon' has inspired me for the past 6 years alone. Its a nine minute plus techno trance track that makes the creativity leak out of me.
Give it a try and get prepared to draw Sci-Fi stuff!
