Very well done. I thought it ending with stills was a bit weak though... And the cutting into the music to say something that wasnt really needed was a bit ... odd.
I think you should have the fight for the head at the very end...

Sweet demo reel! Glad to hear it's being well recieved.
Toaster, ending with stills is standard procedure for an animation demo reel. Though I do agree that the music could have been left on for the lip sync bit.
Not sure if you're looking for a crit (porbably not since this one's already cut to tape and out the door, right? :)) but one thing I thought I'd mention: On your weight test, you cut on the fall before he hit's the ground. That can make it look like the landing was flubbled and you're covering with editing. Not a big deal, but even with a strong reel, you might still get docked a point or two.
But overall, really good reel! I hope mine looks as good when I graduate next year.

Fantastic work. You took your 3D to a new level of art form. The song choice, animation, textures, models... Superb!
Great stuff! I wish my reel would look like that. I commend you on your focus.
Best student work I have ever seen... (I'm a student too)

hey thanks everyone for the kind words...
toaster... yeah I'm aware that the stills in the end pretty much kill the flow of the reel, but I can't afford to send out a million color portfolio's... I figured that stills at the end of the reel would work... I just stuck the music in at the end of the process to give it some atmosphere... never really intended to cut to it.
tedsuo: thanks, and crits always welcome of course... as for the lift assignment... your assumtion was half true... in the original use of the animation the impact was never seen and therefore never animated... now its somewhat weird out of context... and no I haven't sent out all that many reels... it only took a few reels to get a good offer...
student work out of ringling this year kicks :) thelvin, paul, pete chris rsad represent !

PT Osborne,
Your demo reel is awsome. It was put together very well, nice camera shots editing, etc. I have a question, how did you do the lighting? What 3d program did you use to model and anime everything? How long did it take you do all of this from idea to finish?
Good stuff.

Yo Pt my question is this. How good were you before you went to school? It's a great reel and yeah what software did you use it looks like maya to me but i dunno it could be any.

PT: That's awesome that you got hired so quickly. Do you mind me asking where you work now?

tedsuo: thanks, and I don't work anywhere now.. I graduate in a month, although I did work at electronic arts redwood shores last summer as an intern
amador and chris: I used maya 4.0 mainly... and 4.5 once it came out... In maya I use only spot lights... I'm a control freak when it comes to lighting... no accidents.. no letting the computer do too much with global illumination type render software. most of the shots... all the headless stuf is from my short the pretty unlucky head... which i recently finished and I've been working on since september... the clips you see are just a few from the short... it is 3 minutes long total...
thanks for the kudos...

Patrick

your reel looks great. it loaded very quickly..
it gave me chills, it was a perfect mix of moods when the guy was looking for his head and the ugly one had it. i am easily influenced by music and i feel it was a wonderful choice, i feel it ended nicley, there was a lack of closure, but i was left with a nice feeling.

The painted animation is gorgeous! I can't get enough of it. Everything moves haha. What did you use to create that piece? Did you use traditional materials like water colors? Or is it purely digital?

the painted piece was an animation done for UNICEF collaboratively with an illustrator, daniel Miyares who now works at hallmark, and Ian Brauner, another animator at ringling... it was don traditionally... photos of oil on glass paintings... and is the only collaborative piece on the reel.
glad you're interested
